Press Shift-Command-5 for timer, pointer, and save-location controls. These are macOS screenshot tools, so they capture what is visible on your screen rather than automatically saving an entire scrolling webpage.
Choose the capture scope first
The right method depends on whether you need the whole display, just Chrome, a visible portion of a page, or a webpage that continues below the fold.

Capture the entire display
- Bring the Chrome page and any other content you want included into view.
- Press Shift-Command-3.
- macOS saves the image, normally to the Desktop. If the floating thumbnail appears, click it to make edits before it is stored.
This mode includes everything visible on the selected display, so it can also capture menus, another app, or a second window. Use the window or area methods below when those items should not appear.
Capture a selected area of Chrome
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Drag from one corner of the desired region to the opposite corner, then release.
- While drawing, hold Space to move the selection while keeping its dimensions.
- Press Escape before releasing the mouse or trackpad if you need to cancel.
The selection is limited to pixels currently visible on the display. It does not scroll the page or include content below the viewport.

Capture only the Chrome window
- Make the Chrome window you want active and bring it to the front.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. The pointer becomes a camera.
- Move over Chrome and click.
- Hold Option while clicking if you want to leave out the window shadow.
Click the floating thumbnail to edit immediately, or wait for macOS to save the file. The standard destination is the Desktop unless you have changed it in Screenshot settings.
Use the Screenshot app for timers and destination choices
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the macOS Screenshot controls. Choose an entire-screen, window, or selected-area mode from the toolbar, then open Options to configure:
- A timer before capture.
- The save location, instead of the default Desktop.
- Whether a floating thumbnail appears after the shot.
- Whether the pointer is included.
Apple documents this Screenshot app for macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple also documents choices for SDR/PNG or HDR/HEIF capture. Those format choices depend on the Mac and display configuration; they are not available on every system.
Copy a screenshot to the Clipboard instead of saving a file
Hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut. For example, Control-Shift-Command-3 captures the entire display and places it on the Clipboard. You can then paste it into Mail, Messages, an editor, or another app without first locating a file.
You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. If paste produces an old image, take a new capture and wait for the thumbnail or the shortcut to finish before switching applications.

Capture a webpage area with Chrome DevTools
Use DevTools when you need a clean rectangle from the webpage rather than the surrounding macOS interface.
- Click the page viewport so Chrome has focus.
- Press Command-Option-I to open DevTools.
- Press Command-Shift-P to open the DevTools Command Menu.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag over the page region to capture.
Chrome’s DevTools documentation notes that this operation will not work when DevTools is undocked. Re-dock the tools to the browser window, run the command again, and then select the area.
Attempt a full-size webpage screenshot
A normal Mac shortcut cannot include content that is below the visible viewport. A March 2025 Chrome Community answer describes this DevTools sequence:
- Press Command-Option-I.
- Press Command-Shift-P.
- Type capture full size screenshot.
- Choose the matching command and let Chrome generate the image.
This route is community support guidance, not a claim that the official DevTools pages reviewed for this workflow document the full-size command. If the command is absent, update Chrome, keep DevTools docked, and try the exact wording again. A full-size capture can be very tall; check the output dimensions and file size before sending it.
Decide which workflow fits your job
- Fastest proof of what you see: use Shift-Command-4 for a region or Shift-Command-4 plus Space for the Chrome window.
- Repeatable team instructions: use Shift-Command-5 so the timer, pointer, and destination are explicit.
- Page-only documentation: use DevTools area capture to avoid browser chrome and other desktop windows.
- Long articles or receipts: use the full-size DevTools command when available, and verify the result because the documented support for that exact command is community-based.
- Paste into another app: add Control to the shortcut and use the Clipboard rather than a saved file.
Troubleshooting common problems
The shortcut does nothing
Click the desktop or Chrome window and try again; another application may have keyboard focus. If a shortcut has been remapped, open macOS keyboard settings and check the Screenshot shortcuts. You can still open the controls directly with Shift-Command-5.

The image includes other windows
Shift-Command-3 intentionally captures the display. Repeat the capture with Shift-Command-4 followed by Space and click the Chrome window, or draw a smaller selection with Shift-Command-4.
The webpage is cut off at the bottom
Area and keyboard captures only include visible pixels. Use the DevTools full-size command described above for a scrolling page, or capture several sections and stitch them in an editor.
“Capture area screenshot” is missing or fails
Open DevTools while Chrome is focused, search the Command Menu for “screenshot,” and confirm that DevTools is docked. The official DevTools limitation specifically applies when the tools are undocked.
The window has an unwanted shadow
For a window capture, hold Option while clicking the Chrome window. This suppresses the shadow around the captured window.
The file went somewhere unexpected
Press Shift-Command-5, open Options, and select the destination you want. The Desktop is the default destination, but Screenshot settings can change it.

You need an image in another app immediately
Use a Control-modified shortcut to copy to the Clipboard, or Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. Then paste into the target app.

Chrome’s official DevTools guidance places a docked-tools limitation on “Capture area screenshot.” If DevTools is detached, dock it back to the browser window before running the Command Menu command.
