For a normal screenshot, use your device’s built-in screen-capture control. To save an entire webpage that extends below the viewport on a computer, open Chrome DevTools, switch to Device Mode, choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot, and save the image. Chrome on Android also has Share > Long screenshot.
Choose the method that matches what you need
| What you want | Best built-in method | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| The screen currently visible | Your operating system’s screenshot control | Captures only the visible display, not the page below it. |
| A selected rectangle on a webpage | DevTools Command Menu > Capture area screenshot | DevTools must remain docked; area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. |
| The complete long webpage on desktop Chrome | DevTools Device Mode > More options > Capture a full size screenshot | Includes content outside the current viewport. |
| Full, partial or window capture on Chromebook | ChromeOS Screen Capture | Use the Screenshot key or Shift+Ctrl+Show windows, then select a mode. |
| An Android screen | Device screenshot controls | The usual combination is Power + Volume Down; hardware makers can change it. |
| A long page in Chrome for Android | More > Share… > Long screenshot | Drag the crop handles, then save or share. |
A device screenshot and a webpage screenshot are different jobs. The first records pixels currently displayed. DevTools can render and capture the page’s full document, including sections that have not been visible in the browser window.
Take a full-page screenshot on desktop Chrome
1. Open the page and DevTools
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS. You can also open Chrome’s menu and choose the DevTools entry.
2. Switch to Device Mode
In DevTools, activate the device toolbar (the phone-and-tablet icon). Device Mode gives DevTools a controlled viewport and exposes the full-size capture command. Select the device or viewport you want represented in the image; changing its width changes the page layout and therefore the screenshot.
3. Capture the whole document
- Open the Device Mode More options menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Wait while Chrome renders the document and downloads the image.
The resulting file includes content below the fold. If a page loads images only after scrolling, allow its lazy-loaded sections time to appear before capturing; a page that has not loaded its content cannot be recovered by the screenshot command.

Capture only part of a page with DevTools
- Open DevTools and keep it docked to the browser window.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type screenshot.
- Select Capture area screenshot, then drag around the region you need.
The docking requirement is easy to miss: the official DevTools instructions state that area capture will not work while DevTools is undocked. Re-dock it, run the command again, and select the area in the page viewport.
Take a regular screenshot of the visible screen
When you need exactly what is visible—including the browser toolbar, another application, or a dialog—use the screenshot feature provided by Windows, macOS, or your desktop environment. The exact shortcut and save location vary by operating-system version, so use that system’s current screenshot help rather than assuming a shortcut from another platform. This method is also the right choice when the page is inside a native dialog or when DevTools cannot access the content.
Use the built-in capture tools on a Chromebook
- Press the Chromebook’s Screenshot key if the keyboard has one. If it does not, press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows, or open the system Screen Capture control.
- Choose Full screen, Partial, or Window capture.
- For a partial image, drag over the desired area; for a window image, select the window.
ChromeOS copies the capture to the clipboard automatically. Screen Capture settings let you choose a different folder for saved images. These controls capture the screen or a window; for a complete, scrollable webpage, use Chrome DevTools’ full-size workflow instead.
Take screenshots in Chrome on Android
Visible screen
On most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down at the same time. Some manufacturers expose a screenshot command in the power-button menu instead. If neither method works, follow the instructions for your phone’s manufacturer because Android hardware and button mappings vary.

Scrollable Android screenshot
After taking the initial screenshot, Android 12 and later provide Capture more on most scrollable screens. Tap it, extend the selection, and save the resulting image. Availability depends on the device and on whether the screen reports itself as scrollable.
Chrome’s long-page sharing flow
- Open the page in Chrome for Android.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Share….
- Select Long screenshot.
- Move the crop handles to include the required part of the page.
- Confirm, then save or share the image.
This flow is designed for a long webpage rather than the browser chrome around it. If Long screenshot is absent, use the device’s normal screenshot and check whether your Android version and manufacturer support scrolling capture.
Chrome on iPhone and iPad
Use the current iOS or iPadOS screenshot and full-page controls supplied by Apple. The exact buttons and the location of the Full Page option depend on the device and system release; the Chrome-specific evidence available for this guide does not establish a single universal sequence. If Chrome offers a full-page preview after a screenshot, choose that option and save it as a PDF or image according to the system’s choices.
Incognito, managed devices and pages that block capture
Incognito on Android
Chrome Help states that screenshots are not allowed in Incognito mode on Android. Open the same URL in a regular tab to capture it. This is a browser privacy restriction, not a fault with your phone’s buttons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam

Organization-managed Chrome or ChromeOS
Administrators can apply Chrome Enterprise policies that control screenshot capture, including restrictions for managed users or browsers and exceptions for particular websites. If a screenshot command is missing or produces a policy message on a work or school device, contact the administrator; reinstalling Chrome will not override a policy.
Protected or unusual page content
- Video protected by a platform may appear black in an operating-system capture.
- A cross-origin frame, permission prompt, or native browser dialog may not be included in a page-level DevTools capture.
- Pages that keep changing while scripts run can produce an inconsistent full-page image; wait for the page to settle, then capture again.
Make the capture readable and reliable
Select the right viewport
In Device Mode, choose a width that matches the audience. A narrow mobile width can trigger a different responsive layout, while a wide viewport can expose columns that are not present on phones. Zoom and device scale affect the rendered result, so record the viewport choice when screenshots are part of documentation or a bug report.
Wait for dynamic content
Let fonts, images, charts and consent dialogs finish loading before you capture. If a page uses lazy loading, scroll through it once or otherwise trigger its content before using Capture a full size screenshot. For reproducible evidence, disable transient overlays manually when the page allows it, and capture at the same viewport each time.
Choose the output for the job
- PNG preserves text and interface edges well.
- JPEG is smaller for photographic pages but introduces compression.
- A full-page image can become very tall; a PDF or several section images may be easier for people to review.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots repeatedly, from scripts, or for many URLs, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one request. It accepts the page URL and can produce PNG, JPEG or WebP. Before capture it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off.

“Capture a full size screenshot” is missing
- Confirm that the Device Mode toolbar is active; the command belongs to that interface.
- Resize or reload the page if DevTools has not finished initializing.
- For an area image, use the Command Menu instead; full-page and area capture are separate commands.
Area capture does nothing
Dock DevTools to the browser window. The area command is unavailable when DevTools is undocked. Reopen the Command Menu and select Capture area screenshot again.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The full-page image is cut off or blank
- Reload and wait for the page’s scripts, fonts and images to finish.
- Scroll through lazy-loaded sections before recapturing.
- Try a different viewport width if the page’s responsive layout is failing.
- Check whether a managed-device policy, Incognito mode, authentication wall or bot check prevents rendering.
Android scrolling capture is unavailable
Use Chrome’s More > Share… > Long screenshot flow, or check whether the phone supports Capture more. Manufacturer software determines which option appears.

- Use ScreenshotNeo when captures must be automated, cleaned of consent clutter, generated in bulk or requested by an AI agent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Chrome screenshot include the browser address bar?
A DevTools webpage capture records the page, not the browser’s address bar. An operating-system screenshot of the visible screen can include the address bar and other window chrome.
Can I capture a page that requires a login?
DevTools can capture content available in the current authenticated tab. For automated requests, the service or script must be given an appropriate session, cookie or authorization mechanism; never expose credentials in a public screenshot URL.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is my full-page image extremely tall?
A full-size capture represents the document’s complete scrollable height. For easier sharing, capture sections, choose a PDF workflow, or use an image-resizing option in an automation service.
Is a screenshot the same as printing a webpage?
No. A screenshot is a raster image of rendered pixels, while printing creates a paginated document and can apply print-specific CSS. Choose PDF or printing when selectable text and page breaks matter.
