Adobe apps handle several different jobs that people call “taking a screenshot.” To capture the visible desktop or application interface, use your operating system’s screenshot function. To save a clean video frame, use Premiere Pro’s Export Frame. To create an image of artwork or a document page, export it from Illustrator or InDesign. To turn a screen capture into a PDF, use Acrobat’s clipboard or Grab workflow. FrameMaker also documents a dedicated capture utility.
Choose the right kind of capture
Start with the content you need in the final file, not the Adobe app you happen to have open. A desktop screenshot includes whatever application chrome and other visible interface elements are on screen. A native export usually produces the artwork, video frame, or document page without the surrounding desktop. Acrobat’s screenshot-to-PDF commands are for making a PDF from a capture; they are not the same as exporting a PDF from an editable Acrobat document.
| What you need | Use this workflow | What the result represents |
|---|---|---|
| The visible Adobe interface, desktop, or another application | Operating-system screenshot, then paste or import it into the Adobe app; for a PDF, use Acrobat’s capture workflow | The visible screen, including any interface chrome in view |
| A still from a video in Premiere Pro | Export Frame in the Source Monitor or Program Monitor | A still image from the selected frame |
| An Illustrator design | Export for Screens | One or more artboards or selected assets |
| An InDesign page | Export the document content as JPEG or PNG | A page image, rather than a screenshot of the whole application window |
| A screen capture delivered as a PDF | Acrobat’s Clipboard Image or Grab workflow | A PDF created from the captured screen |
| A screen capture with annotations or content beyond the visible area | FrameMaker’s documented RoboScreenCapture utility | A screen capture that can be edited, annotated, and saved in multiple image formats |
Capture an Adobe window or desktop
If your goal is to show a menu, panel arrangement, dialog, error, or something outside the document canvas, take a screenshot with the operating system rather than exporting the artwork. On Windows, the Print Screen key is one way to copy the current screen to the Clipboard. The exact result can depend on your operating-system settings and keyboard configuration. On macOS, Adobe’s archived Acrobat help documents a screen-capture route within Acrobat; see the PDF instructions below.
- Arrange the desktop so the relevant application, panel, or dialog is visible. Close or move anything that should not appear in the capture.
- Use the operating system’s screenshot function to capture the screen or the intended visible area. On Windows, the Print Screen key can place a capture on the Clipboard.
- Paste the Clipboard image into the Adobe app, or import the saved screenshot file if your operating-system screenshot function creates one.
- Save the result in the format and location required by your project. If the deliverable must be a PDF, use Acrobat’s screen-capture-to-PDF path rather than assuming a pasted image is already a PDF.
This method records the visible screen as it appears; it does not produce a clean export of editable artwork. If you need a specific artboard, page, or video frame, use that application’s native output workflow instead.

Save a still frame from Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro’s Export Frame command saves a still from the frame currently under the playhead. The procedure applies to the Source Monitor or Program Monitor. Adobe’s Premiere help instructions were updated January 21, 2026.
- Add the clip to a sequence if you are choosing a frame from the sequence, then move the playhead to the frame you want. For a source clip, open it in the Source Monitor and navigate to the desired frame there.
- In the Source Monitor or Program Monitor, choose Export Frame. The control may not be visible: Adobe says it is not shown by default.
- If the button is missing, open the Monitor panel’s Button Editor and add the Export Frame icon to the monitor controls.
- Enter a filename, choose the image format and destination, then select OK.
- If you also want the still to appear in the Premiere project, enable Import into project before confirming.
When one frame needs a high-quality still format
For formats such as DPX, TIFF, TRG, or PNG, use File > Export > Media and clear Export As Sequence to export a single frame. This is a different route from the monitor’s Export Frame control. Choose the route that matches the output format and project workflow you need; do not leave sequence export enabled when the intended deliverable is one still.
Export an Illustrator artboard or asset
Use Illustrator’s Export for Screens when you need the design itself, not a picture of Illustrator’s interface. The workflow can export complete artboards or selected assets and supports PNG, JPEG, SVG, and PDF. It can also generate multiple scale variants—including 1x, 2x, and 3x—in one action, which is useful when the same design needs several output sizes.
- Decide whether the output should be a complete artboard or only selected assets. This choice determines what the exported files represent.
- Open Illustrator’s Export for Screens workflow and choose the artboards or assets to include.
- Select the required output format: PNG, JPEG, SVG, or PDF.
- Choose the scale variants you need. For example, select 1x, 2x, and 3x if you need several sizes of the same output.
- Export and check the resulting files to confirm that the intended artboards or assets and scales were produced.
The available Adobe guide for this feature documents Illustrator CC 2018. The feature and its described formats are documented there, but menu placement or labels may differ in newer Illustrator releases. If the exact controls do not match your version, consult the help for that installed version rather than assuming the 2018 interface is unchanged.

Export an InDesign page as an image
When you need an image of InDesign page content for sharing or distribution, use InDesign’s export feature rather than capturing the whole application window. Adobe documentation describes JPEG and PNG output and includes a low screen-resolution option intended for on-screen display.
- Open the document and identify the page whose content you want to share.
- Use InDesign’s export workflow and choose JPEG or PNG as the output format.
- For a file intended for on-screen display, consider the documented low screen-resolution option.
- Export the image and inspect it at the intended use size. If the result is meant for print or another specific production requirement, choose settings appropriate to that requirement rather than assuming the on-screen option is suitable.
This workflow exports page content; it does not photograph the InDesign workspace, toolbar, or panels. The documentation summarized here does not specify exact menu labels or resolution values, so check the help for your InDesign version for those controls.
Make a PDF from a screenshot in Acrobat
Acrobat documents separate capture-to-PDF routes for Windows and macOS. These commands turn a screen capture into a PDF; they are not the same as saving an editable Acrobat document as a PDF.
Windows: create a PDF from the Clipboard
- Capture the current window or screen to the Clipboard using the operating system. Adobe’s archived help specifically mentions the Print Screen key as one option.
- In Acrobat, choose File > Create PDF > From Clipboard Image.
- Acrobat creates a PDF from the Clipboard image. Check the resulting page before sharing or filing it.
macOS: capture through Acrobat Services
- In Acrobat, choose Acrobat > Services > Grab.
- Select Screen, Selection, or Timed Screen, depending on what you need to capture.
- Acrobat converts the capture to a PDF and opens it.
The available Acrobat instructions are from Adobe’s help archive, so the menu route may not match every current macOS or Acrobat release. If you do not see the documented command, use the screenshot utility available on your Mac and then create a PDF from the resulting image by a method supported by your installed software.

Use FrameMaker’s capture utility for annotated or extended captures
FrameMaker documentation describes RoboScreenCapture as a dedicated utility for screen capture. Its documented modes include freehand, virtual screen, and multi-region capture. It can capture beyond the currently visible area, edit the captured result, add annotations such as stamps or callouts, and save in more than 20 image formats.
This is the most suitable Adobe workflow in this guide when the task is specifically to capture and annotate a screen rather than export a document page or frame. The FrameMaker information is part of its 2026 user guide. For availability and exact controls, follow the documentation for the FrameMaker version installed on your system.
Pick settings based on where the image will go
There is no single best screenshot format or resolution for every Adobe task. Use the native output controls when you need control over the content and variants; use an operating-system capture when the interface itself is part of the evidence.
- Need application chrome: capture the visible desktop or application window. A native artboard or page export will not show the surrounding interface.
- Need a clean graphic: export an Illustrator artboard or asset, or an InDesign page, instead of capturing the workspace.
- Need a video still: use Premiere Pro’s frame export so the output is tied to the frame under the playhead.
- Need several design sizes: Illustrator Export for Screens can generate scale variants such as 1x, 2x, and 3x in one action.
- Need an on-screen page image: InDesign’s documentation includes a low screen-resolution option for that purpose.
- Need a PDF: Acrobat’s documented capture commands make the PDF from a screen capture; use the document’s own export workflow when the PDF should represent editable document content.
Before sharing, open the saved output and check that it shows the intended content, uses the expected format, and is stored where you can retrieve it. A still exported from a video, a page image, and a desktop screenshot may look similar at a glance but preserve different context and project relationships.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
Premiere Pro has no Export Frame button
The icon is hidden by default. Add it using the Monitor panel’s Button Editor, then use it from the Source Monitor or Program Monitor.
The Premiere still shows the wrong moment
The command exports the frame at the playhead. Move the playhead to the intended frame in the relevant monitor before exporting. Confirm that you are looking at the source clip or sequence you meant to capture.
Premiere exports multiple frames instead of one
For the documented File > Export > Media workflow, clear Export As Sequence when you want a single still.
The capture includes panels or desktop clutter
You captured the interface rather than exporting the document content. Use the application’s native export for a clean artboard, page, or video frame. If the interface is important, rearrange or hide unwanted visible elements before taking the OS screenshot.

Acrobat does not create a PDF from the screenshot
On Windows, make sure a screen or window capture is on the Clipboard before choosing File > Create PDF > From Clipboard Image. On macOS, try the documented Acrobat > Services > Grab path; archived menu instructions may not match every installation.
Illustrator’s controls differ from the guide
The cited Export for Screens guide is for CC 2018. Newer releases may place controls differently. Look up the help for your installed version and confirm whether you are exporting artboards or selected assets.
The capture omits content outside the visible area
A standard screenshot records what is visible. For an extended capture, FrameMaker’s RoboScreenCapture documentation describes virtual-screen and other capture modes, including capturing beyond the visible area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot keep the Adobe document editable?
No. A screenshot is an image of visible pixels. If you need editable source content, keep or share the original Adobe project file; a screenshot or exported page image is a separate output.
Can I use the ScreenshotNeo example to capture my Adobe app window?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages by URL. Use your operating system or the relevant Adobe workflow to capture a local desktop, document, or video frame.
