Choose a method that matches the screenshot you need
A YouTube screenshot can mean either an image of the video frame alone or a screenshot of the page region around the player. Those are different results: an extension designed for video frames can omit the controls, while a general browser screenshot may include controls, captions, or surrounding page content unless you select the area carefully.

Take a clean YouTube screenshot in Chrome
Install an extension from the Chrome Web Store
- Open the official Screenshot YouTube listing or the Video Screenshot listing.
- Review the listing, permissions, privacy disclosure, and browser requirements. Select the store’s install option and confirm the prompt.
- Open or reload the YouTube watch page. If Chrome asks whether the extension may run on the site, allow access to YouTube for the capture to work.
Pause on the exact frame
- Open the video on its regular YouTube watch page rather than an embedded player.
- Play or scrub to the scene you want, then pause. For a precise moment, move the playhead close to the scene and use the player’s frame-by-frame movement where available; otherwise advance in small increments and check the paused image.
- If the final image needs a particular resolution, select the desired YouTube playback quality before capturing. A larger playback setting does not guarantee a particular output size: the captured dimensions depend on the extension and the video/player state.
Capture and export
Look for the camera or screenshot control added to the player. Click it to capture the paused frame. Screenshot YouTube documents one-click capture, saving to a file, copying to the clipboard, optional keyboard shortcuts, and playback-rate controls. The exact shortcut and where a saved file goes may depend on the extension’s current settings; consult the listing or extension controls rather than assuming a key combination.

Video Screenshot says its camera button captures the current frame without player controls or watermarks, and can save JPG or PNG or copy the image to the clipboard. Its Chrome Web Store listing describes it as Chrome-only. Use the clean-frame extension if controls are the main problem; with a general screenshot, even a small amount of the seek bar or toolbar can get into the selection.
Take a YouTube screenshot in Firefox
Use Firefox’s built-in Screenshot tool
- Open the YouTube video and pause on the desired frame.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select the video rectangle. Adjust the selection so it excludes the player bar, captions, or page elements you do not want.
- Choose Download to save the image or Copy to put it on the clipboard.
Mozilla documents region, visible-area, and full-page capture modes. For a video-only result, region selection is usually the relevant one. Because this captures a page area rather than a dedicated video frame, check the selection and the paused player before saving. Mozilla also says Firefox Screenshots may collect interaction events such as Copy or Save full page, but not URLs or image details; users can disable technical and interaction data collection in the relevant settings. Use a dedicated Firefox add-on
Youtube Video Screenshot Tool adds a button in each video’s settings menu. Mozilla’s listing says it captures the video at the selected resolution, excludes captions and the player bar, and opens the result in a new window. It needs access to youtube.com. The listing also warns that some ad blockers may close that new window, so this option may need an exception or a different capture method if the output does not appear.

Which extension should you use?
For Chrome, Screenshot YouTube is a focused one-click option with file saving, clipboard copying, optional shortcuts, and playback-rate controls listed by its developer. Video Screenshot specifically advertises a clean frame without player controls or watermarks, JPG or PNG export, and clipboard copying. Its listing also advertises premium subtitles, compatibility with additional sites, and letterbox cropping; those are advertised extras, not a guarantee that every feature is available without payment.

For Firefox, the built-in tool needs no YouTube-specific add-on, but you must select the right page region. The dedicated add-on gives you a player control and is described as excluding captions and the player bar, but opens a new window that some ad blockers may close. Consider these differences before choosing:
- Browser support: Video Screenshot’s listing says Chrome-only. Firefox users can use Mozilla’s built-in tool or the Firefox add-on.
- Clean video-only result: Video Screenshot and the Firefox add-on describe excluding player controls; Firefox’s built-in tool captures a selected page region.
- Export: Screenshot YouTube and Video Screenshot list saving and copying; Firefox Screenshots offers Download and Copy. The Firefox add-on opens the result in a new window.
- Privacy disclosures: Read the store listing and permissions for the extension you choose, especially if it requests access to site data.
- Maintenance: Browser and YouTube changes can affect extensions. Check update dates and recent listing details if a feature is important to your workflow.
Privacy and reliability checks before installing
Extensions that work inside a video page may need access to YouTube. Grant only the permissions you understand, and check the current store listing and privacy policy before use. In the Chrome Web Store listing accessed on September 29, 2026, Screenshot YouTube’s developer disclosed no data collection and described it as free of ads and tracking code. Video Screenshot’s listing disclosed handling personally identifiable and authentication information and links to its privacy policy. These are listing disclosures, not an independent security audit, and can change; review the live disclosures yourself.

The Firefox add-on had 423 users and version 1.5.0 last updated February 28, 2025, according to its Mozilla Add-ons listing accessed September 29, 2026. The Chrome Web Store listing for Screenshot YouTube showed 500,000 users, 4.4 stars from 486 ratings, and version 3.0.0 updated December 27, 2024, when accessed September 29, 2026. Video Screenshot’s listing showed 100,000 users, 4.2 stars from 784 ratings, and version 7.0.7 updated August 23, 2026, at that access date. These figures describe store listings at that time; they are not a guarantee of current support, quality, or compatibility.
Fix common screenshot problems
The camera or screenshot button is missing
- Reload the YouTube tab after installing or enabling the extension.
- Check that the extension is enabled and allowed to access youtube.com in the browser’s extension controls.
- Try a standard YouTube watch page instead of an embedded player.
- If it used to work and stopped after a YouTube update, check the extension’s listing for maintenance or compatibility information. Video Screenshot says its operation depends on changes to other websites and requires continuous maintenance.
The result is blank or a new window does not appear
- For the Firefox add-on, allow the output window and test whether an ad blocker is closing it. The Mozilla listing specifically warns that some ad blockers may do this.
- Try Firefox’s built-in region screenshot or a Chrome extension’s save/copy option if the add-on output remains blocked.
- Pause the video first and confirm that the frame is visible in the player before capturing.
Player controls, captions, or page content are in the image
Use Video Screenshot’s described clean-frame capture in Chrome, or the Firefox add-on’s video-only capture. With Firefox Screenshots, select only the video rectangle and check the crop before downloading. If controls keep appearing, move the pointer away from the player and wait for transient overlays to disappear before selecting the region.
The image is at the wrong resolution or frame
Set YouTube’s playback quality before capture when using the Firefox add-on, which Mozilla says captures at the selected video resolution. For any method, pause and verify the displayed frame; scrubbing can land between the moment you intend and the frame actually shown. If fine timing matters, advance in smaller increments and capture more than once, then keep the correct still.
