To capture a JavaScript-rendered canvas chart reliably, wait for the chart’s own ready condition—not just page navigation or network idleness—then capture the page or the chart element. If the output is blurry, check the canvas bitmap dimensions separately from its CSS display size; for Chart.js, configure its device pixel ratio when you need a sharper bitmap.
Capture only after the chart is ready
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' followed by page.screenshot(). That can be a useful navigation strategy, but it does not establish that a chart’s JavaScript has finished drawing. A page may become network-idle while chart initialization, animation, or application work is still in progress.

Prefer a condition tied to the page’s chart initialization. If you control the page, expose an explicit ready state when the chart has completed the work that matters for the screenshot. Otherwise, wait for a selector or state change that is known to occur after initialization. Puppeteer provides page.waitForFunction() for a page predicate and page.waitForSelector() for a selector. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide and Page API document the relevant APIs.
Use network idleness as a navigation or loading signal, not as proof that canvas pixels are painted. Puppeteer’s waitForNetworkIdle() waits for network idleness and always waits at least the configured idle time; that is still not a chart-ready event. If the chart animates, an application-level completion callback or explicit ready flag is preferable to an arbitrary sleep. There is no universal chart-ready event because the correct signal depends on the application and chart library.

Example: wait for an application-owned ready flag
This example assumes the page sets window.chartReady = true only after the chart has initialized and finished any animation relevant to the capture. Replace the flag with a real condition exposed by your page. The example uses Chart.js merely as one possible chart library; it does not assume your page uses it.
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/chart', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.chartReady === true, {
timeout: 15000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'chart-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install Puppeteer in your project if it is not already available, and run the code in a Node.js environment with access to the target page. The page must actually set the ready flag; otherwise the wait will time out. Increase or reduce the timeout to suit the site, but do not use a longer timeout as a substitute for a valid readiness condition.
Wait for a selector when that is the real signal
If the application adds a chart container only after initialization, a selector wait can be appropriate:

await page.waitForSelector('#chart-container canvas', { timeout: 15000 });
Presence alone may not mean the canvas has been painted. Use this only when the selector’s appearance reliably corresponds to the state you want, or pair it with an application-specific check.
Choose the screenshot scope
Puppeteer supports both page-level screenshots and element screenshots. Capture the full page when surrounding labels, legends, or context matter; capture the chart element when you need to isolate the visualization. The Puppeteer screenshots guide documents both page.screenshot() and ElementHandle.screenshot().
Full page
await page.screenshot({ path: 'chart-page.png', fullPage: true });
Chart element
const chart = await page.$('#chart-container');
if (!chart) throw new Error('Chart container was not found');
await chart.screenshot({ path: 'chart.png' });
An element screenshot attempts to scroll a hidden element into view before capturing it. If a chart is clipped or not visible, check whether its container is hidden, off-screen, covered, or constrained by layout styles before changing the screenshot method.

Diagnose blurry or incorrectly sized output
A canvas has two relevant sizes: its CSS display dimensions, which determine how large it appears in the layout, and its bitmap dimensions (canvas.width and canvas.height), which determine the number of pixels available to draw. These values are not interchangeable. The Chart.js documentation explains the distinction and recommends sizing responsive charts through a dedicated, relatively positioned parent container rather than styling only the canvas. Chart.js responsive charts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →const dimensions = await page.$eval('#chart-container canvas', canvas => {
const style = getComputedStyle(canvas);
const rect = canvas.getBoundingClientRect();
return {
bitmapWidth: canvas.width,
bitmapHeight: canvas.height,
displayWidth: rect.width,
displayHeight: rect.height,
cssWidth: style.width,
cssHeight: style.height,
};
});
console.log(dimensions);
If the display size is unexpectedly small or large, inspect the parent container and responsive layout. With Chart.js, setting CSS dimensions directly on the canvas can produce inaccurate or blurry rendering because the display dimensions and bitmap dimensions need to remain coordinated.
Increase Chart.js bitmap resolution when needed
For a Chart.js chart that needs a higher-resolution bitmap—for example, for image conversion or high-DPI printing—set options.devicePixelRatio. It scales the canvas relative to its container; it is a resolution control, not a way to wait for rendering. See the Chart.js device pixel ratio documentation.

const config = {
type: 'bar',
data,
options: {
devicePixelRatio: 2,
},
};
Choose a value that suits the output you need and the page’s layout. A larger backing bitmap can improve sharpness, but it does not correct incorrect CSS sizing or a screenshot taken before drawing finishes. Other chart libraries may expose different resolution controls.
Troubleshoot blank, clipped, or missing charts
A blank screenshot does not identify one cause by itself. Initialization, data loading, animation, visibility, CSS sizing, or a library-specific issue may be involved. Check the page rather than assuming a fixed delay will solve it.

- Canvas is present but blank: inspect the browser console and runtime errors, verify the chart’s data and initialization path, and wait for a condition that represents completed drawing rather than only canvas creation.
- Screenshot is taken too early: replace an arbitrary sleep or network-idle-only strategy with a page predicate, selector/state change, or application completion callback tied to chart readiness.
- Chart is clipped: inspect the chart element and parent dimensions, overflow styles, and whether the target is hidden or constrained. For an isolated capture, screenshot the chart container rather than the entire page.
- Chart is blurry: compare CSS display size with
canvas.widthandcanvas.height. For Chart.js, check parent-container sizing and usedevicePixelRatioif a higher-resolution bitmap is required. - Wait times out: confirm that the predicate or selector actually becomes true on the target page. A made-up global such as
window.chartReadymust be implemented by the page before Puppeteer can observe it.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without writing and maintaining a Puppeteer browser flow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. For the canvas chart use case, the page still needs to render correctly; the API call does not create a chart-specific ready signal.

Make canvas charts accessible too
A screenshot can preserve the pixels but cannot make canvas content intrinsically readable to assistive technology. Chart.js notes: “The canvas element has support in all browsers and will render on screen but the canvas content will not be accessible to screen readers.” Give the chart an accessible name or provide meaningful fallback content, and make the underlying data available in an accessible form where the chart communicates information. See Chart.js accessibility guidance.
