Wait for the application state you need—not just for navigation or network activity—then call Puppeteer’s page.screenshot(). For many SPAs, a reliable sequence is to navigate, wait for a results element or another specific readiness condition, and capture. A network-idle option can help, but it does not prove that client-rendered content is ready.
Capture an SPA after its target view is ready
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project, then adapt this example to the app’s URL and a selector that appears when the intended view is ready. The Puppeteer screenshot guide documents navigation and screenshot capture; the selector wait ties capture to the page’s actual DOM.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/app', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="results"]', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'app.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace https://example.com/app and [data-testid="results"] with values for your application. The selector should identify the completed target view, not merely a shell that appears before its data. This is an illustrative composition of documented APIs, not a guarantee that a particular application uses that selector or that its results are already populated. See the Puppeteer screenshots guide.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWait for content, not just its container
If the results container is added before its data arrives, waiting for the container alone is too early. Wait for a condition that represents usable content—for example, at least one result row, a completed status attribute, or the disappearance of a loading indicator. Puppeteer’s waitForFunction() evaluates a predicate in the page context until it returns a truthy value. Selector waits and locators are alternatives when the desired signal is a DOM element. See Page.waitForFunction() and the Page interactions guide.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const results = document.querySelector('[data-testid="results"]');
return results && results.querySelectorAll('[data-testid="result-row"]').length > 0;
}, { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'app.png', fullPage: true });
Use selectors and state markers that your application actually exposes. If an empty result set is a valid final state, a predicate requiring at least one row will time out; instead, wait for an explicit completed state that distinguishes “finished with no results” from “still loading.”
Should you use networkidle0 or networkidle2?
Puppeteer defines networkidle0 as no more than zero active network connections and networkidle2 as no more than two, sustained for at least 500 ms. They observe network activity, not whether a particular React, Vue, Angular, or other client-rendered view is complete. A page can become quiet before a UI update appears, or remain active because of polling, analytics, or long-lived connections. These lifecycle definitions are in the Puppeteer lifecycle reference.

| Wait strategy | What it observes | Best use | Common limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
domcontentloaded or load |
A navigation lifecycle event | Pages whose required content is available at that lifecycle point | Client-side data and later UI transitions may not be done |
networkidle0 |
No more than zero active connections for at least 500 ms | Pages expected to become fully quiet | Polling or persistent connections may prevent it from settling |
networkidle2 |
No more than two active connections for at least 500 ms | Navigation where some background activity may continue | Quiet network does not certify the target UI state |
Selector, locator, or waitForFunction() |
A chosen DOM element or page-context condition | SPAs with a meaningful completion marker or target content | Incorrect or overly broad conditions can resolve too soon or time out |
For an SPA, use network idle only as a navigation aid when it suits the page, and pair it with an application-specific condition when correctness depends on rendered data. You can also omit a network-idle wait if the app keeps connections open and use a targeted condition instead.

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
- Viewport screenshot:
page.screenshot()captures the current viewport by default. Set a consistent viewport before navigation when dimensions matter. - Full-page screenshot: pass
{ fullPage: true }to capture the full document rather than only the viewport. - Element screenshot: wait for the target element, then call its screenshot method. Puppeteer scrolls an element into view if needed; capture can fail if the element becomes detached.
The screenshot API documents options including path, type, fullPage, clip, omitBackground, and quality. Quality applies to relevant image formats, not PNG. Review the current Page.screenshot() API for option details.

Troubleshooting blank or incomplete screenshots
- Screenshot is blank or shows a loading shell: the capture ran before the app finished rendering. Wait for a selector or predicate tied to completed content rather than relying only on a navigation event.
networkidle0never resolves: the page may keep requests open or poll continuously. Use a selector or application-state predicate, or considernetworkidle2as a navigation strategy—not as proof of readiness.- The wait succeeds but data is missing: the condition may match a container rendered before its data. Tighten it to a completed marker, populated content, or a state that also handles valid empty results.
- A selector wait times out: check the selector against the rendered DOM, confirm the route and app state are correct, and ensure the element is expected to become visible. If it is hidden by design, use a condition appropriate to its presence rather than visibility.
- Element screenshot throws because the element detached: the application may have replaced the node between the wait and capture. Re-query after the view settles and capture the current element.
- Full-page image omits expected material: confirm the page has reached the state you need and use
fullPage: true; a default screenshot covers only the viewport.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request API can return an image or PDF. To capture an SPA URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/app -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters and response details. Cookie banners and consent overlays, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Make captures repeatable
For visual comparisons, keep the viewport and application state consistent between runs. Choose the same readiness condition each time, and make it specific enough that the capture cannot race ahead of delayed data. Puppeteer documents viewport and capture controls, but no single setup guarantees identical rendering across every app.
