Install Playwright and its Linux browser dependencies
In your project directory, install Playwright with the package manager the project already uses. Then install Chromium and its Linux dependencies with Playwright’s documented command:

npx playwright install --with-deps chromiumPlaywright browser binaries are version-specific: “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” (Playwright browser documentation.) If you update Playwright, run its browser installation command again so the browser matches the installed package. The combined --with-deps option is documented for Linux setup; exact system package availability can vary by distribution.

Choose viewport or full-page capture
Without fullPage: true, Playwright captures the current viewport. With it, Playwright captures the full scrollable page. Full-page capture can produce a much taller image than a viewport capture, so use the default viewport capture when you only need the initially visible area.

Choose format and pixel scale
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots. Use a file extension that matches the intended format; PNG is used in the example. The default scale is device scale. Set scale: 'css' for one image pixel per CSS pixel, or scale: 'device' for device-pixel output.

Select a browser engine when needed
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Use the engine that matches the browser behavior you need to reproduce, and install that engine’s matching binary for the project’s Playwright version. Chromium is used in the runnable example; do not assume another engine is installed merely because the Playwright package is present.
Check that Tamil glyphs render correctly
A screenshot can be saved successfully even when Tamil characters appear as empty squares, missing glyphs, or unexpected fallback. The page needs valid Tamil text and an available font with the required glyphs. A page may load its own webfont; otherwise the browser may rely on fonts available on the Linux host.

Noto Sans Tamil is one relevant script-specific font. A browser follows the declared font-family list when a font lacks required characters, so inspect the page’s font declarations as well as the fonts installed on the machine. See Noto Sans Tamil.

- Check whether the page declares a Tamil-capable webfont. If it does, inspect whether the font request loads successfully and whether the CSS font-family declaration is applied.
- If needed, make a Tamil-capable font such as Noto Sans Tamil available to the browser on the Linux host.
- After changing system fonts, restart the browser process or create a fresh browser context, then capture again.
- Inspect the resulting PNG itself. A completed screenshot operation does not confirm that the browser selected the intended glyphs.
Font package names and availability depend on the Linux distribution and release. Fedora lists a google-noto-sans-tamil-fonts package, but that name is not a distribution-neutral install command. Consult the package manager and current package information for your specific release; verify the browser’s output in the same machine or container that will run the capture.

Keep visual screenshot results reproducible
Pixel output can vary with browser engine, operating system, fonts, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation cautions: “Screenshots differ between browsers and platforms due to different rendering, fonts and more, so you will need different snapshots for them.” (Playwright visual comparisons documentation.)
For screenshot assertions, generate and compare baselines in the same environment. Pin the Playwright and browser versions, Linux image, installed fonts, browser settings, and headless mode used for both baseline generation and reruns. A baseline created on a different platform or with different fonts may fail even when the page has not meaningfully changed.
Troubleshoot common failures
