How to Take a Long Screenshot in a Browser (Full-Page Capture)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A long screenshot—also called a full-page or scrolling screenshot—captures content below the visible browser window in one image. Use the browser’s built-in capture command first: Firefox offers Save full page, Chrome provides Capture a full size screenshot in DevTools Device Mode, and Edge offers Capture full page from its Screenshot tool. Let the page finish rendering before you capture it, because dynamic or unusually structured pages may need a retry or a different browser workflow.

What a long screenshot captures

A normal screenshot records only the current viewport. A full-page capture includes content farther down the document without requiring you to stitch several images manually. Browser tools may also offer a visible-area capture, a selected region, or an individual element; choose the scope that matches your purpose.

  • Full page: the entire document, including content below the fold.
  • Visible area: only what is currently on screen.
  • Region: a rectangle you select.
  • Element: one page component, usually through developer tools.

Output controls differ by browser version. Check the current save, copy, and markup controls shown after capture rather than assuming every installation offers the same formats.

Firefox: save the full page

Firefox has a native screenshot interface. Mozilla Support explains: “You can take screenshots to capture visible parts of web pages, or even full web pages, and copy or save these images.”

#1 Best Overall
  1. Open the webpage and wait for its content to finish loading.
  2. Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on Mac.
  3. In the screenshot interface, choose Save full page.
  4. Review the preview, then save or copy it using the controls Firefox displays.

For a screen-only image, select Save visible. Firefox can also select a page part or a region. If you work in Developer Tools, Firefox’s settings can add a Take a screenshot of the entire page toolbox button; the Inspector also provides Screenshot Node for an individual element. Those developer options are useful for targeted captures but are more steps than the ordinary page command.

Chrome: capture a full-size screenshot with DevTools

Chrome’s documented full-page route uses DevTools Device Mode. The command captures the whole page, including content outside the current viewport.

  1. Open the target page.
  2. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux/ChromeOS or Command+Option+I on Mac, using the shortcut supported by your current Chrome build.
  3. Turn on Device Mode by selecting the phone/tablet icon in the DevTools toolbar.
  4. Open the Device Mode toolbar’s More options menu.
  5. Select Capture a full size screenshot.
  6. Save the generated image using Chrome’s download prompt.

Chrome also has a Command Menu opened with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux/ChromeOS or Command+Shift+P on Mac. Menu labels can move between releases, so use the Device Mode menu as the direct route and verify the wording in your installed version.

Edge: use Screenshot and Capture full page

Microsoft Edge documents a Screenshot tool that can capture a complete page, a selected area, and markup. Microsoft notes that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version.

  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  3. Choose Capture full page.
  4. Inspect the result and use the available save, copy, or markup controls.

Choose the selected-area option when you need only part of the page. If the shortcut does not open Screenshot, check Edge’s current menu and keyboard-shortcut settings; the feature may be labeled or exposed differently in your build.

Which browser method should you choose?

Browser Native full-page route Useful alternatives
Firefox Right-click empty page space → Take Screenshot → Save full page; Ctrl+Shift+S or Command+Shift+S Save visible, region/page-part selection, Developer Tools screenshot button, Screenshot Node
Chrome DevTools → Device Mode → More options → Capture a full size screenshot Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P or the Mac equivalent for finding commands
Edge Ctrl+Shift+S → Capture full page Selected-area capture and markup

Start with the browser already open: native capture avoids installing extra software and is sufficient for occasional work. An extension is optional. Consider one only if you repeatedly capture pages and need a dedicated workflow. GoFullPage is an example of a full-page screenshot extension listed in the Chrome Web Store; its listing establishes that the extension exists, not that it is the best choice or that it offers a partner program.

Make the capture more reliable

Wait for rendering

Do not capture while a page is still loading. Wait for text, images, and layout shifts to settle. This is practical advice, not a guarantee for every site.

Retry before changing tools

If the result stops early or misses content, run the same command again after the page settles. Full-page support does not guarantee identical results on every dynamic page.

Try another native workflow

For a persistent problem, try the browser’s developer-tool route or another browser’s built-in capture. This is a reasonable troubleshooting step, not a universal fix.

Know what may be difficult

Pages with dynamic updates, lazy loading, nested scrolling regions, or virtualized content can produce incomplete captures. The browser documentation does not provide one compatibility guarantee or a single remedy for all such layouts. If content lives inside a scrollable panel rather than the document itself, a full-document command may not include every panel item; capture the relevant element or region when the browser offers that option.

Common problems and fixes

The command is missing

  • Firefox: right-click empty page space, not an embedded frame or selected text, then choose Take Screenshot. Check the shortcut for your operating system.
  • Chrome: open Device Mode first; the full-size command is in its More options menu.
  • Edge: use Ctrl+Shift+S and look for Screenshot. Availability can vary by device, market, and version.

The image contains only the viewport

You probably used a visible-area command. Return to the full-page choice: Firefox’s Save full page, Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot, or Edge’s Capture full page.

Images or sections are missing

Wait for loading and try again. Scroll through the page once if you need to trigger lazy content, then repeat the capture. If it remains incomplete, use another native workflow or capture a specific element. Treat these as practical steps rather than guaranteed remedies.

The result is unexpectedly huge

Long pages naturally create tall files. Capture only a region or element when the reader does not need the entire document, and use the browser’s available output or markup controls to reduce what you save.

For automated or repeatable captures, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.

See the parameter reference and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A basic cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

For long-page jobs, ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, custom viewport or device presets, retina scale, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, custom CSS and JavaScript, hidden selectors, blocked ads or resource types, cookies and headers, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

When automation is preferable

  • Use native browser capture for a one-off page while you are already reading it.
  • Use an API when a build, documentation pipeline, monitoring job, or batch process must capture URLs repeatedly.
  • Use an MCP server when an AI agent needs to inspect page information, take screenshots, or create PDFs as part of a tool workflow.

Keep credentials out of client-side code and pass only URLs you are authorized to capture. For public embeds, use signed links rather than exposing an access key.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a long screenshot the same as a scrolling screenshot?

Yes. Both terms usually mean one capture containing page content below the visible viewport.

Do I need to buy a physical device or accessory?

No. The documented workflows use browser software. An extension is optional software, not a required purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a full-page image look different from what I saw while scrolling?

A capture is assembled from the page’s rendered layout at capture time. Dynamic updates, lazy content, nested scrolling, or virtualization can change what is included; wait for rendering and retry or use an element capture.
