To capture a website as it looks right now, open the exact page and use your browser’s or operating system’s screenshot controls. That usually saves only the visible viewport. If you need content below the fold, choose a full-page capture; if you need repeatable captures or a specific page element, use browser automation such as Playwright. A screenshot records a rendered image at one moment—it is not an editable copy or a video of later changes.
Take a screenshot of the page you have open
- Open the page and state you want to preserve. Navigate to the right URL, then wait for the page to finish loading and for any content you care about to appear. If the page has tabs, filters, an expanded menu, or a form state you want shown, set that up before taking the screenshot.
- Use the browser’s capture feature or your operating system’s screenshot controls. The exact menu names and keyboard combinations vary by browser and operating system, so use the instructions for the software you are actually using rather than assuming one shortcut works everywhere. Browser controls may offer a page or full-page capture; operating-system controls generally capture what is displayed on screen.
- Save the image somewhere you can find it. Pick a descriptive filename such as
pricing-page-2026-09-30.pngand a known folder. Use PNG for crisp text and interface details; choose another format only if your workflow calls for it.
The browser and operating-system controls are the simplest choice for a one-off screenshot. They avoid setup and usually capture the page exactly as it is rendered for you, including its current scroll position and visible state. They are not a reliable way to capture the same page repeatedly at the same viewport or to automate a set of URLs.
Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
Before capturing, decide which part of the page matters. A standard screenshot includes the visible browser content at that moment. It does not automatically include sections farther down the page.

In Playwright, the screenshot tool documentation describes both page and target-element capture, and notes that its element target and full-page options cannot be used together. A full-page image means the webpage’s scrollable content in that capture workflow, not browser controls or the rest of the desktop.

Automate screenshots with Playwright
For repeated captures, use a browser automation library. Playwright can navigate to a URL and save either a viewport screenshot or a full-page image. The example below uses Node.js and the Playwright library. It assumes Node.js and Playwright are installed in your project; follow the current Playwright screenshots guide and check the API documentation for the version installed in your project, since APIs can change.

})();Save that code in a JavaScript file in a project where Playwright is available, then run it with Node. Replace the URL and output path with your own. The explicit viewport makes the browser’s CSS layout size predictable for this run; it does not guarantee that dynamic content, fonts, or external resources will always load identically.
Viewport capture
To capture only the current viewport, omit fullPage:

Capture a particular element
Use a locator when the whole page is not useful. For example, if the page contains an element with the CSS selector #chart:

The locator has to match the intended element; if it matches nothing or the page has not rendered it yet, the capture will fail or not show the content you expected. A component capture is separate from a full-page capture.
Resolution and pixel dimensions
CSS pixels describe the layout dimensions the page uses; device-pixel output can be larger on high-density displays. Playwright’s screenshot documentation distinguishes CSS-pixel output from device-pixel sizing. Choose based on the intended use: matching layout dimensions can help with visual comparison, while higher pixel density can help retain detail in a raster image. Check the relevant option’s behavior in the documentation for your Playwright version before relying on exact output dimensions.
Other developer option: Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a JavaScript browser-automation library; Chrome for Developers describes it as automating Chrome and Firefox and lists screenshots among its uses. It is a reasonable choice if your project already uses Puppeteer. For someone who only needs a screenshot once, installing an automation library is extra work compared with the browser’s own capture controls. Troubleshoot a screenshot that is wrong or incomplete
- Only the first screen appears: You probably took a viewport capture. Use the browser’s full-page option if available, or set
fullPage: truein Playwright. - The page looks blank or unfinished: Wait for the page and the specific content you need to appear before capturing. A page load event does not necessarily mean every late-loading image or application component has finished rendering. For a scripted capture, use an appropriate wait for a selector or other condition rather than assuming navigation alone is enough.
- An element capture misses the component: Check that your selector matches the intended element and that the element exists before taking the screenshot. Do not combine an element target with full-page capture in Playwright’s screenshot tool.
- The image is too large, too small, or hard to read: Check the viewport and pixel scale. CSS-pixel layout size and device-pixel output are different concerns; select the sizing behavior for the task and confirm it against your installed API version.
- A popup or consent prompt obscures the page: A manual screenshot captures what is rendered, including overlays. Dismiss the prompt if appropriate and allowed, or use a workflow designed to handle consent UI. Do not assume that a screenshot tool removes site overlays unless its documented behavior says so.
- The scripted capture fails: Verify the installed browser automation package and API version, the URL, the selector if any, and that the script reaches its screenshot line. For remote pages, also consider that the site may require authentication or may not serve the same content to automated browsers.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
A manual capture has almost no setup cost, but it depends on a person opening the correct page and selecting the right capture mode. Automation is more repeatable, but adds dependencies and can be affected by page loading, dynamic content, access controls, viewport settings, and changes in the target site. Full-page images can be much taller than viewport images, so use them only when below-the-fold material matters.
Playwright and Puppeteer are software libraries rather than paid screenshot APIs in this comparison; the cited documentation establishes their capture capabilities, not a price or a guarantee that every page will render identically.
