How to Take a Full-Page (Scrolling) Screenshot on Linux

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Firefox on Linux, open the page, right-click an empty area, choose Take Screenshot, then select Save full page. Press Ctrl+Shift+S instead if you prefer a shortcut. Choose Download to save a PNG or Copy to put the capture on the clipboard. This captures the complete webpage rather than only the visible monitor area.

Mozilla documents this workflow, along with alternative Developer Tools and Web Console methods, in its Firefox screenshot help.

Use Firefox’s built-in full-page screenshot

  1. Open the long webpage in Firefox for Linux and wait for the content you need to appear.
  2. Right-click an unoccupied part of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  3. In the screenshot interface, select Save full page in the upper-right corner. Do not choose Save visible, which captures only the current viewport.
  4. Click Download to save the PNG in Firefox’s normal download folder, or choose Copy to place the image on the clipboard.

Firefox also lets you select a rectangular region or an automatically highlighted page section. Those modes are useful for partial captures, but only Save full page includes the page’s scrollable document.

Before you capture

  • Close menus, dialogs and browser panels that you do not want in the image.
  • Allow text, images and other content to finish loading. Pages that add material only after scrolling may need extra attention.
  • Check the result after downloading; a very long image can be difficult to inspect at normal zoom.

Capture a full page from Firefox Developer Tools

Developer Tools provide a second browser-based route and are useful when you already work with Firefox’s inspection tools.

  1. Open Developer Tools with F12 or the browser’s Developer Tools command.
  2. Open the Developer Tools settings and locate Available Toolbox Buttons.
  3. Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  4. Use the new camera button in the toolbox. Firefox saves the full-page image in its Downloads directory.

The exact button and setting are documented in Firefox’s Developer Tools screenshot documentation.

Use Firefox’s Web Console for configurable captures

Firefox’s Web Console has a :screenshot helper. This is entered in the browser console, not in a Linux shell. Add --fullpage to include content outside the current window:

:screenshot --fullpage --filename page.png

The documented helper also supports options for common capture adjustments:

  • --filename chooses the output path or name.
  • --delay waits before capturing, useful when a page animates or finishes rendering after navigation.
  • --dpr sets device-pixel ratio.
  • --selector captures a particular element rather than the whole document.
  • --clipboard copies the result instead of relying only on a file.
  • --file writes the capture to a file.

Open the Web Console from Developer Tools, enter the command, and press Enter. Refer to the official helper documentation for the current syntax and behavior of each option.

What about Firefox’s headless Linux command?

Mozilla documents --headless and --screenshot [path] for Linux GTK builds, with --window-size controlling the dimensions:

firefox --headless --screenshot page.png --window-size=1440,900 https://example.com

This is useful for automated, fixed-window captures. However, the command-line documentation does not explicitly promise that --screenshot captures the entire scrollable document. If full-page output is a requirement, use the Web Console’s documented --fullpage option or the built-in Save full page action instead of assuming the headless image contains every section.

Full webpage versus full monitor: the distinction

A browser full-page screenshot stitches or renders the document beyond the visible viewport. A desktop utility’s “full” command generally means the complete display or all connected monitors.

For example, Flameshot documents flameshot gui, flameshot screen and flameshot full. Its full mode captures all monitors, not the entire scrollable webpage. A normal Print Screen key has the same limitation: it records what is currently visible. See the Flameshot command-line options for the distinction. Installation methods vary by distribution; the project lists packages plus AppImage and Flatpak options in its Linux installation guide.

Which Linux method should you choose?

Method Best for Important detail
Firefox screenshot UI One-off captures with minimal setup Choose Save full page, then Download or Copy
Developer Tools button People already using Firefox inspection tools Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page first
Web Console :screenshot Delay, selector, filename, clipboard or DPR control Use --fullpage; this is a browser-console command
Headless CLI Scripts needing repeatable viewport captures Documented screenshot behavior is not explicitly full-page
Flameshot or Print Screen Desktop and monitor images Not a scrollable webpage capture

Troubleshooting incomplete or incorrect captures

The image stops at the visible viewport

Return to the screenshot controls and select Save full page, not Save visible. If you used the headless command, switch to the built-in UI or :screenshot --fullpage, whose documentation explicitly describes full-page behavior.

Content loaded only after scrolling is missing

Some sites use lazy loading or an internal scroll area. Wait for the page to finish loading, then inspect the downloaded image. If the content lives inside a panel with its own scrollbar, the browser document and that panel are different scroll containers; Firefox’s page capture may not treat the panel as the main document. In that case, capture the panel with the Web Console’s --selector option or use the site’s own export feature.

A page contains a fixed header or overlapping widgets

Fixed navigation, chat controls and consent dialogs can appear repeatedly or cover content. Dismiss overlays before capturing and verify the final image. A delay supplied to the Web Console helper can allow animations or late layout changes to settle.

The crosshair will not follow the mouse on Wayland

Mozilla documents a Wayland limitation in Firefox’s screenshot interface: mouse movement of the selection crosshair does not work. Use the documented keyboard movement and selection controls instead, or choose Save full page when you do not need to draw a region. Details are in the Firefox Help instructions.

The saved file is enormous or hard to share

A long page at a high device-pixel ratio can produce a very tall PNG. For a smaller result, use the Web Console’s --dpr option or capture a specific section with --selector. For documents intended for printing, a PDF workflow may be more practical than one extremely tall image.

Performance and reliability considerations

Full-page capture requires Firefox to render content outside the current viewport, so very long pages can take longer and consume more memory than a visible-area shot. Keep the tab stable while the capture runs, and avoid navigating away until the file is downloaded. Dynamic advertisements, infinite feeds and content that changes while scrolling can make two captures differ; record the URL and capture time when the image is evidence or documentation.

For repeatable work, fix the viewport, wait for a known selector or delay, and use a deterministic filename. Always open the output once to check that the bottom of the page, lazy-loaded images and any required interactive state are present.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, so you can capture a long page from a Linux script without driving a desktop browser manually. The API accepts the URL and access key as query parameters:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. It can load lazy images, capture an element by CSS selector, set a viewport or one of 12 device presets, use retina scale, apply dark mode, inject CSS or JavaScript, click an element, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, block ads and trackers, supply headers, cookies, a user agent, Authorization, timezone or geolocation, and return PDFs with paper size, margins, orientation and page ranges. It also supports transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links for public images, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.

An MCP server supplies take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every feature is included on every plan: 1,000 shots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
