How to Take a Full-Page Screenshot with ScreenshotOne

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set full_page=true on a ScreenshotOne request. ScreenshotOne’s full-page mode scrolls through the document by default, allowing lazy-loaded images and other below-the-fold resources to load before the final image is produced. When a page is incomplete, tune the scroll algorithm, scroll increment, delay, animation handling, wait time, viewport, and maximum height rather than treating the first capture as definitive.

Basic full-page request

ScreenshotOne accepts GET and POST requests at its /take endpoint. The essential option is full_page=true. A minimal GET request has this shape:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -d access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
  -d url=https://example.com
  -d full_page=true
  -o page.png

Replace the access key and URL with your values. The access key can also be sent in a POST JSON body or in the X-Access-Key header. POST bodies can be as large as 100 MiB, which is useful when a request contains substantial custom CSS, JavaScript, headers or cookies.

POST form for repeatable automation

curl -X POST "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{
    "access_key":"YOUR_ACCESS_KEY",
    "url":"https://example.com",
    "full_page":true
  }'
  -o page.png

A successful response contains the requested image or other selected content type. Keep the response body as binary data; do not decode it as text.

Why full-page captures miss content

A browser cannot reliably produce one tall image merely by stretching the initial viewport. Modern pages load content as it approaches the viewport, animate components, change layout while images arrive, and sometimes append new material indefinitely. ScreenshotOne’s default full-page scrolling is intended to trigger those behaviors, but the vendor cautions that reliable full-page rendering remains difficult and some pages may still fail after tuning.

Scrolling and lazy-loaded images

With full_page=true, full_page_scroll is enabled by default. The browser scrolls down and back up so lazy-loaded images and other viewport-triggered resources receive a chance to load. If images remain absent, make the scroll increments smaller and add a delay after each increment:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -d access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
  -d url=https://example.com/catalog
  -d full_page=true
  -d full_page_scroll=true
  -d full_page_scroll_by=500
  -d full_page_scroll_delay=1500
  -o catalog.png

The documented useful range for full_page_scroll_by is 100–500 pixels. The 500-pixel, 1,500-millisecond values above are starting points, not guarantees; pages with slow image endpoints may require a longer delay.

Choosing a capture algorithm

The default algorithm uses Chrome DevTools Protocol behavior with ScreenshotOne tuning and site-specific optimizations. Set full_page_algorithm=by_sections when a complex layout or animation produces seams or missing areas. This mode scrolls, captures sections, and joins them into one image. It can improve difficult pages but may increase capture time and still require scroll tuning.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -d access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
  -d url=https://example.com/story
  -d full_page=true
  -d full_page_algorithm=by_sections
  -d full_page_scroll_by=300
  -d full_page_scroll_delay=1000

Waiting for late content and reducing motion

Use a page-load wait of roughly five to ten seconds when scripts, fonts or data arrive after navigation. ScreenshotOne’s motion-reduction option is best effort: custom JavaScript animation, canvas drawing and animated image files can still differ from a static frame.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -d access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
  -d url=https://example.com/dashboard
  -d full_page=true
  -d delay=7000
  -d reduce_motion=true
  -o dashboard.png

For a deterministic workflow, wait for a meaningful selector in addition to a fixed delay. A selector wait is preferable when the page has a clear “content ready” element; a delay remains useful for fonts, transitions and third-party images that load afterward.

Control the output dimensions

Viewport and device settings

Viewport width and height affect responsive breakpoints, line wrapping and therefore total page height. Set an explicit viewport for reproducible desktop captures, or use a documented device preset when you need a mobile layout. Presets emulate browser settings; they are not photographs taken from a physical phone or tablet.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -d access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
  -d url=https://example.com
  -d full_page=true
  -d viewport_width=1440
  -d viewport_height=900
  -o desktop.png

Very long and infinite pages

Set full_page_max_height to prevent an infinite feed or an accidental runaway document from producing an unusably tall image. If you need manageable files, set full_page_slices=true. The default slice height is 4,000 pixels and the documented range is 1–16,000 pixels.

PDF instead of an image

For a document-like result, request PDF output with screen media and printed backgrounds:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  -d access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY
  -d url=https://example.com/report
  -d format=pdf
  -d media_type=screen
  -d pdf_print_background=true
  -d pdf_fit_one_page=true
  -o report.pdf

Fitting a long page onto one PDF page can make text extremely small or create a very tall page. Use it only when that trade-off suits the reader; otherwise allow normal pagination.

Python

import requests

params = {
    "access_key": "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY",
    "url": "https://example.com",
    "full_page": "true",
    "full_page_scroll_by": 500,
    "full_page_scroll_delay": 1500,
}
response = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotone.com/take",
    params=params,
    timeout=120,
)
response.raise_for_status()
with open("page.png", "wb") as output:
    output.write(response.content)

Node.js

const query = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_ACCESS_KEY',
  url: 'https://example.com',
  full_page: 'true',
  full_page_scroll_by: '500',
  full_page_scroll_delay: '1500'
});

const response = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotone.com/take?${query}`);
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`ScreenshotOne returned ${response.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
await require('node:fs').promises.writeFile('page.png', image);

A practical tuning workflow

  1. Start with full_page=true and an explicit viewport.
  2. Check the bottom, lazy images, sticky headers and repeated sections in the output.
  3. Add a five-to-ten-second wait if data or fonts arrive late.
  4. Set a 100–500 pixel scroll increment and a delay such as 1,500 milliseconds when lazy loading is incomplete.
  5. Try by_sections for animated or unusually complex layouts.
  6. Enable motion reduction, understanding that it cannot freeze every animation type.
  7. Cap height or enable slices for feeds and other unbounded documents.
  8. Save the exact options with the image so later captures can be reproduced.

Troubleshooting

The screenshot stops at the first viewport

  • Confirm the request contains the Boolean option full_page=true, not a client-side flag that is discarded.
  • Ensure the URL is publicly reachable from the rendering service and does not require an interactive login.

Images or cards are missing

  • Keep full-page scrolling enabled.
  • Reduce the scroll increment to 100–300 pixels and add a per-step delay.
  • Add a total page wait and, where possible, wait for the selector that indicates content readiness.

Animations create seams or inconsistent frames

  • Try reduce_motion=true.
  • Switch to full_page_algorithm=by_sections.
  • Increase delays so each section settles before capture. Canvas and animated-image content may still vary.

The output is too tall or the process is slow

  • Set full_page_max_height for feeds or accidental infinite scrolling.
  • Use slices to divide a large image.
  • Remember that smaller scroll steps, longer delays and section stitching trade speed for completeness.

The API returns an error

Documented error categories include internal errors, invalid options and reached limits. Check parameter names and value ranges first, then inspect the HTTP status and response body. A reached-limit response requires waiting for quota or rate capacity; an invalid-options response requires removing or correcting the offending setting.

FAQ

Does full-page mode guarantee every pixel is captured?

No. ScreenshotOne explicitly says some pages remain difficult even after tuning. Treat the settings as controls for improving completeness, not as a universal guarantee.

No. They emulate browser and viewport settings, so hardware-specific rendering differences are not represented.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture an infinite-scroll page in full?

Not without a boundary. Set full_page_max_height or use slices; otherwise the page may continue expanding while it is being rendered.
