Take a full-page screenshot with Selenium and Firefox
Selenium’s Python Firefox API documents full-document screenshot methods. This minimal example saves a PNG:

driver.quit()The destination directory must already exist and be writable. The filename should end in .png. The file-saving method returns False if an I/O error prevents saving. See the Selenium 4.50.0 Python Firefox WebDriver API for the documented methods.
Other Firefox output forms
The same API documents save_full_page_screenshot(filename), get_full_page_screenshot_as_png(), and get_full_page_screenshot_as_base64(). Use the file method when you want a saved PNG; use PNG bytes or base64 when your test or application needs to process or transport the image rather than save it directly. Check the API documentation for the exact return behavior of the method you choose.

Why a normal Selenium screenshot may be incomplete
Selenium’s standard screenshot endpoint is described as capturing the current browsing context. That is not the same as a guarantee that the image includes the entire page below the viewport. For Firefox in Python, choose the explicitly named full-page method above. Selenium’s explanation of the standard behavior is in its documentation on windows and tabs.
Capture beyond the viewport in Chrome
For Chrome, the relevant documented mechanism is the Chrome DevTools Protocol method Page.captureScreenshot. Its captureBeyondViewport parameter controls capturing beyond the viewport and defaults to false. This is a protocol-level route, not a browser-independent Selenium call. The exact integration code depends on your Selenium binding and the compatible Chrome DevTools protocol version in your environment.

Before implementing it, confirm how your Selenium project exposes DevTools commands and which protocol version it supports. The authoritative parameter description is in the Chrome DevTools Protocol Page reference. Do not assume a Firefox method or a Chrome protocol example works unchanged across browsers, bindings, or versions.
Wait for the page state your screenshot needs
Navigate first, then wait for the state that matters to your test before capturing. There is no universal wait condition that guarantees every page is visually complete: an application may render content after navigation, fetch data asynchronously, or update the layout later. Choose a condition based on the page and test—for example, a specific element becoming visible—rather than treating page navigation alone as proof that all content is ready.

Long-page behavior also depends on the page. Lazy-loaded images, infinite scrolling, sticky or fixed headers, exceptionally tall documents, and pages that change while the capture is underway require validation in your actual browser and setup. The documented methods do not establish a universal result for these cases.
Verify the saved image
- Open the image and check that it begins at the expected top of the document and reaches the intended bottom.
- Compare the screenshot with the page at the viewport and page state used by your test; check that key sections, images, and content are present.
- If content is missing, determine whether the page had finished rendering, whether it requires scrolling to load content, or whether the selected browser-specific capture method was used.
- For Firefox manual verification, Firefox’s Web Console supports
:screenshot --fullpage, which includes portions outside the window bounds. This is a manual check, not a Selenium automation call. See Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot documentation.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot only shows the visible area
You may be using Selenium’s ordinary screenshot endpoint, which captures the current browsing context. In Python with Firefox, call get_full_page_screenshot_as_file() or another documented Firefox full-page method. In Chrome, use the DevTools Protocol route and enable captureBeyondViewport.
The screenshot is missing content near the bottom
Check whether the page loads content only after scrolling or whether it was still changing when captured. Wait for the page state your test requires and inspect the result. If the page uses infinite scrolling or other dynamic behavior, the official references cited here do not establish a universal capture procedure; test that page and setup directly.

No file appears
For the Firefox file method, verify that the parent directory exists, the process can write there, and the filename ends in .png. Check the Boolean return value; the method returns False on an I/O error.
Chrome DevTools command fails or behaves differently
Confirm that your Selenium binding exposes the required DevTools command and that its protocol version is compatible with the Chrome environment. The protocol documentation describes the parameter, but does not prescribe one Selenium integration that works across all versions and bindings.
