For a single image of a long webpage on a Mac, Firefox has the most direct built-in option: open the page, choose Take Screenshot, then Save full page. Chrome can capture a full page through DevTools. The usual macOS screenshot shortcuts capture what is on screen—not the off-screen parts of a scrolling page.
If you need to keep the page rather than create one tall image, Safari can save a Web Archive; if you need a shareable document, Safari’s Mail workflow offers PDF as an output. Those are useful alternatives, but neither is the same thing as a full-page screenshot.
Choose the output you actually need
Before capturing, decide whether the recipient needs a single image, a saved webpage, or a document. A full-page screenshot is an image of the page from top to bottom. A Web Archive is a saved webpage file, while a PDF is a document-style version intended for viewing or sharing.
| Need | Mac option | What it produces |
|---|---|---|
| One image showing the full page | Firefox’s Save full page or Chrome DevTools’ full-page capture | A screenshot image |
| Save a webpage for later | Safari: File > Save As, then choose Web Archive | A webpage archive; links can continue working while their destination pages remain available |
| Share a page as a document | In Safari, use the share/email workflow and choose PDF in Mail | A PDF |
| Capture only what is visible | macOS screenshot shortcuts | A screen, selected area, or window/menu capture |
Apple documents Safari’s save formats as Web Archive and Page Source. Page Source saves HTML source, not a visual image of the page. Some webpages may prevent saving items displayed on them. Apple’s Safari instructions explain the save options.

Firefox: capture the entire webpage as one image
Firefox provides a direct full-page capture workflow. Mozilla documents both the page context-menu route and a Mac keyboard shortcut.
- Open the webpage in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Right-click an empty area of the webpage. On a Mac, you can also Control-click an empty area.
- Choose Take Screenshot. Alternatively, use Command-Shift-S.
- In the screenshot controls, choose Save full page.
- Save the image, or use the available copy option if you want to paste it into another app.
Mozilla says screenshots can be downloaded as an image or copied. Its Firefox screenshot guide covers the page-level workflow.
Developer Tools alternatives in Firefox
If you already have Developer Tools open, Mozilla also documents a screenshot icon that can be enabled in Developer Tools settings. The Web Console supports the :screenshot --fullpage option. These routes are useful for developer workflows, but the page menu is simpler if all you need is a full-page image. See Mozilla’s Developer Tools screenshot documentation for those options.
Chrome: use DevTools for a full-page capture
Chrome for Developers lists full-page screenshot capture among the techniques available in DevTools. This is a browser developer-tools method, not a standard Mac screenshot shortcut. The cited Chrome guidance establishes the capability but does not give a complete, version-independent sequence of menu labels, so check the interface in your installed Chrome version rather than relying on a keystroke recipe that may have changed.

Why the normal Mac screenshot shortcuts do not capture a scrolling page
Apple’s documented shortcuts capture the display or a selection on the display. They do not describe a built-in scrolling-page capture command.
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: select and capture part of the screen.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: capture a window or menu.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. Its Options include timer and save-location settings.
Apple says screenshots are saved to the desktop by default, and the save location can be changed in Screenshot options. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple documents SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF capture choices; those format options are version- and hardware-qualified. See Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions.
You can use a normal screenshot to document what is currently visible, but taking successive screen captures and joining them is a manual workaround, not a single full-page capture. It can also leave gaps or overlaps as the page shifts. For one continuous image, use a browser’s full-page feature where available.

Safari: save the page or send a PDF instead
Save a Web Archive or Page Source
- In Safari, open the page.
- Choose File > Save As.
- Choose Web Archive to save the webpage content, or Page Source to save the HTML source.
- Save the file and open it later to check that it contains what you need.
A Web Archive is a saved-page alternative, not a documented promise of one tall screenshot image. Apple notes that graphics and links in an archive continue to work as long as the destination webpages remain available. Some sites may prevent saving displayed items. Details are in Apple’s Safari save-page guide.
Choose PDF when you need a document to share
Apple says that when you email a webpage from Safari, Mail lets you choose whether to send it as a webpage, PDF, link, or Reader article when the page is an article. Choose PDF when a document-style share is more useful than a tall image. That workflow produces a PDF, not a screenshot file. See Apple’s Safari sharing instructions.
Check the capture before you rely on it
Full-page capture does not guarantee that every site will render perfectly. Pages can load content as you scroll, update dynamically, or use sticky elements; the official browser guidance cited here does not promise that every lazy-loaded image, fixed header, or unusually long document will appear exactly as expected.
- Scroll through the source page once before capture if important images or sections appear only as you move down.
- Open the saved image and inspect the top, middle, and bottom for missing sections, blank areas, or repeated elements.
- If a page is still loading, wait and capture again; compare the result rather than assuming the first image is complete.
- If one browser’s result is incomplete, try another supported route, such as Firefox’s full-page capture or Chrome DevTools.
- If you only need the text or a document to send, consider Safari’s Web Archive or PDF route instead of forcing an image workflow.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots from code or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and setup. The same endpoint can be called from Python:

Common problems and fixes
“Take Screenshot” is missing in Firefox
Make sure you are using Firefox and right-clicking or Control-clicking the webpage itself, not browser chrome such as the tab strip or toolbar. If you prefer, try the documented Command-Shift-S shortcut. Browser menus can change, so consult Mozilla’s current screenshot help if the control is unavailable.
The image misses content near the bottom
Some pages populate sections or images only as they are scrolled into view. Scroll through the page first to prompt content to load, then make a new full-page capture and inspect the result. No cited browser documentation guarantees perfect rendering for every dynamically loaded page.
A sticky header appears repeatedly or covers content
Full-page capture may handle fixed-position page elements differently from a normal scroll. Check the output at the points where the header repeats or overlaps content. If that makes the image unusable, try the other browser capture workflow or choose an archive/PDF if the goal is reading or sharing rather than a single image.
The screenshot is huge or awkward to send
A long, detailed page can produce a tall image that is inconvenient to view or attach. If the recipient needs a readable document, use the Safari-to-Mail PDF option; if they need the original page structure and links, consider a Web Archive. Choose format based on the recipient’s purpose rather than shrinking an image until its text becomes hard to read.

Safari saved source code instead of a visual copy
In File > Save As, choose Web Archive for a saved page or Page Source only when the HTML source is what you want. Neither option should be described as a full-page screenshot.
FAQ
Can I capture an entire webpage with Shift-Command-5?
Apple documents Shift-Command-5 as opening the Screenshot app, with options such as a timer and save location. Apple’s instructions do not describe it as a scrolling webpage capture tool.
