How to Take a Full-Page Screenshot of a Local HTML File on Windows

In Microsoft Edge, open the local HTML file, press Ctrl+Shift+S, choose Capture full page, review the result, and save it. Microsoft documents this workflow for webpages, but does not explicitly guarantee that full-page capture is available for every file:// page or Edge version. If the option is missing, use Firefox’s built-in full-page screenshot button or Web Console command instead.

Capture the local file in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the HTML file in an Edge tab. You can open it from Edge or double-click it in File Explorer if Edge is your chosen browser.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also open the capture tool from Edge’s Settings and more menu.
  3. Select Capture full page.
  4. Review the capture, then save it to your device.

Microsoft describes Edge’s Screenshot tool as able to capture content beyond the visible screen. Availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version. If Edge opens its capture interface but does not offer Capture full page for your local file, use the Firefox steps below. Microsoft Edge’s screenshot instructions and its Screenshot Tool feature page describe the feature and its availability caveat.

Use Firefox if Edge lacks the full-page option

Firefox documents two ways to capture the whole page, including content outside the current window. Choose the toolbar button for a point-and-click workflow or the Web Console when you want to set options such as a filename or selector.

Enable and use the toolbar button

  1. Open Firefox DevTools settings.
  2. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  3. Select the screenshot icon that appears in the DevTools toolbar.
  4. Firefox saves the image in the browser’s Downloads directory.

Run the Web Console command

Open the Web Console and enter:

:screenshot --fullpage

To specify a filename, use a .png extension:

:screenshot --fullpage --filename page.png

Firefox’s screenshot command also documents optional controls for delay, device-pixel ratio, clipboard output, filename, and CSS-selector targeting. Consult Mozilla’s screenshot documentation for the available syntax.

When to use a local web server

A local file can be opened directly in a browser, but a local website can also be served from your computer and opened in Edge. Edge DevTools documentation covers page resources from the file system and using a local web server to work with a local site. If Edge does not expose full-page capture on the direct file:// page, you can try loading the site through a local server and checking the capture menu again; Microsoft does not explicitly guarantee that this will make the option available.

For reference, Edge DevTools opens with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I, and its Command Menu opens with Ctrl+Shift+P. Those shortcuts are useful for inspecting the rendered page, but Microsoft’s reviewed DevTools documentation does not establish a specific full-size screenshot command in that menu. See the Sources tool overview and DevTools overview.

Check the image before sharing it

A full-page screenshot captures what the browser rendered, not merely the HTML source. Before saving or sending the image, inspect the top, bottom, and long sections of the page for missing images, cut-off content, or layout differences. HTML pages are assembled from resources such as CSS, JavaScript, and images, so a screenshot may reflect a missing or delayed resource rather than a problem with the capture tool.

Common problems

  • Edge has no “Capture full page” choice: Availability varies, and Microsoft does not promise the option for every local-file context. Check that Edge is up to date and try Firefox’s toolbar or console method.
  • The result shows only the visible area: Confirm that you selected Capture full page in Edge or used Firefox’s --fullpage option, rather than taking a standard screen capture.
  • The image looks incomplete: Review whether the page’s images or other resources loaded in the browser before capturing. Try again after the page has finished rendering.
  • You cannot find Firefox’s toolbar icon: Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under DevTools settings’ Available Toolbox Buttons.
  • The Firefox console command does not save as expected: Use the documented command syntax, and give --filename a filename ending in .png.

For a page available at a URL, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one request. For a local file, first make the page reachable to the API—for example, by serving it at a URL the API can access. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it cannot directly read a file on your Windows computer merely from a local path.
