Use the built-in Snipping Tool. Open it, choose Delay, select a one-to-five-second countdown, choose a capture mode, and select New. While the timer runs, open the menu or arrange the screen; when capture mode appears, select the area to save.
The quickest method
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu or by searching from the taskbar.
- Select Delay.
- Choose a countdown interval, such as 5 seconds.
- Choose the capture mode you need: freeform, rectangular, window, or full screen.
- Select New to begin the countdown. Depending on your Windows version, the interface may show a mode control and a New button, or describe the command as starting from Mode.
- During the countdown, open the menu, tooltip, dialog, or other screen state you want.
- When the display changes to the capture state, select the area to capture.
The delay is useful whenever a menu disappears as soon as you move the pointer, or when you need both hands to arrange a window before selecting the screenshot region.
Set up Snipping Tool before the countdown
1. Open the app
Launch Snipping Tool from Start or taskbar search. The Microsoft instructions for this feature apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Labels and placement can vary between versions, so look for the control named Delay and the command that starts a new snip.
2. Choose the delay
Select Delay, then select an interval from one to five seconds. Microsoft’s documented example is: select Delay and then select, for example, 5 seconds. Set the interval before starting the new snip; changing it after the countdown has begun will not prepare the current capture.

3. Select the capture mode
Choose the shape that matches the result you need:
| Mode | Use it when | What you select |
|---|---|---|
| Freeform | You need an irregular outline. | Draw the boundary around the subject. |
| Rectangular | You need a precise box around part of the screen. | Drag a rectangle over the target. |
| Window | You want one application window. | Select the window after capture mode appears. |
| Full screen | You need the entire display. | The full display is captured rather than a hand-drawn region. |
4. Start the timer at the right moment
Select New after the mode and delay are ready. The countdown gives you time to open a menu, move the pointer, expand a submenu, or place a dialog in the desired position. Do not open the menu first and then configure Snipping Tool: switching focus to the app can close the menu before the timer starts.
5. Select the final area
When the screen changes to the capture state, make the selection required by the mode. For a menu screenshot, select the menu and enough surrounding context to show where it came from. For a window capture, select the target window rather than dragging across unrelated desktop space.
Keyboard shortcuts for delayed captures
Microsoft’s shortcut table lists these commands:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Alt + D | Set a one-to-five-second capture delay. |
| Alt + M | Choose a capture mode. |
| Alt + N | Create a new snip using the same mode. |
| Windows logo key + Shift + S | Open the snipping overlay. |
| Print Screen | Take a full-screen snapshot. |
The shortcut table does not describe Windows logo key + Shift + S or Print Screen as setting a delay. If you need a timed capture, set the delay in Snipping Tool (or use Alt + D) before creating the new snip.
How to capture a menu before it closes
- Open Snipping Tool and set Delay to three or five seconds.
- Select Rectangular mode when you want only the menu and nearby context, or Window mode when the menu belongs to a distinct application window.
- Select New.
- Immediately switch to the application and open the menu. If it has nested items, move over the parent item so the submenu expands during the countdown.
- Wait for capture mode, then select the menu. Keep the pointer away from text you need to read.
A longer delay gives you more time to navigate, but it also gives the application more time to change state. Use the shortest interval that allows you to finish the setup reliably.

Choosing a delay that works
- One second: Suitable when the application is already in the correct state and you only need to move the pointer.
- Three seconds: A practical starting point for opening one menu or switching to another window.
- Five seconds: Useful for nested menus, dialogs that require several clicks, or a setup that needs both hands.
The documented control provides one-to-five-second intervals. If you need a longer pause, prepare as much of the screen as possible before selecting New, or repeat the capture with a shorter setup sequence.
Troubleshooting delayed screenshots
The menu disappears before I can capture it
Set the delay first, select New, and open the menu only after the countdown starts. If the menu requires several levels, use five seconds and move through the levels quickly. Window mode can be easier than a hand-drawn rectangle when the menu is attached to one application.
I cannot find Delay
Make sure you opened Snipping Tool rather than only the snipping overlay. Microsoft’s instructions use the Delay control inside Snipping Tool. Windows versions can arrange the controls differently, so look for a mode control, a New command, and a delay setting in the app window.
The shortcut did not start a timed capture
Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the overlay, and Print Screen takes a full-screen snapshot; neither is documented as setting a delay. Use Snipping Tool’s Delay control or press Alt + D, then press Alt + N to create the new snip.

The wrong area was captured
Choose the mode before starting the countdown. Rectangular mode requires a deliberate drag, while window mode limits the selection to a window. If the target moves or closes during the delay, repeat the capture with a shorter interval and prepare the application before pressing New.
The interface labels do not match these steps
Windows 10 and Windows 11 both have the documented delay workflow, but exact labels can vary by version. Look for the same sequence: set a delay, choose a mode, start a new snip, arrange the screen during the countdown, and select the area once capture mode appears.
What the built-in method can and cannot do
Snipping Tool is the appropriate choice for a delayed screenshot of your Windows desktop, an application, or a menu displayed on your monitor. It requires no additional product or purchase. The delay is a preparation timer; it does not automatically perform clicks or open a menu for you. You must arrange the screen during the countdown.
The capture modes documented for this workflow are freeform, rectangular, window, and full screen. Pick one based on whether the result should follow a custom outline, a precise rectangle, one window, or the entire display.

Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a website rather than your local Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. It is not a replacement for Snipping Tool when you must capture a local menu, but it avoids browser automation for a public URL.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for parameter details. The following requests are runnable examples; replace YOUR_API_KEY and the target URL as needed.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo can produce PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
For automated workflows, it includes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Other available controls include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user-agent and Authorization settings, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification.
