How to sync open tabs across devices in Chrome

To sync open Chrome tabs between devices, sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account on each device and enable the tabs-and-history sync setting. On a computer, synced pages appear under More > History > Tabs from other devices. On Android, open More > Recent tabs. Sync makes a list of tabs available; it does not automatically place every page into the window you are currently using.

What Chrome tab sync does

Chrome associates your open-tab list with the Google Account used to sign in to Chrome. After the relevant sync category is enabled, you can open a page that is still available on another signed-in device instead of searching for it again. Google describes this as syncing tabs and browsing history after you sign in to Chrome. See Google Chrome Help’s computer instructions.

The feature is useful for continuing work started on a desktop from an Android phone, checking a page opened on a laptop, or keeping related tab groups available while moving between devices. It is different from sending one page immediately: synced tabs remain discoverable in the other-device list, while the sharing command delivers a selected tab to a chosen device.

What you need

  • Chrome installed on each device you want to connect.
  • The same Google Account signed in to Chrome on every device. Signing in only to a Google website is not the same as signing in to Chrome.
  • The tabs/history sync category enabled. The computer interface calls it History and tabs; Android’s sync controls refer to Open Tabs.
  • A Chrome version whose menus may use the labels documented below. Google can change wording by platform or version.

No accessory, extension, cable, or separate tab-transfer service is required for the documented workflows. The account and Chrome profile are what connect the devices. If a device has several Chrome profiles, configure the profile containing the Google Account whose tabs you want to share; another profile can have a different tab list even on the same computer.

Turn on tab sync on a computer

Use these steps on each computer that should contribute tabs to the shared list or read tabs from it.

  1. Open Chrome and sign in with the Google Account used on your other device.
  2. Select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  3. Open You and Google and select the account name shown there.
  4. Turn on History and tabs. If Chrome offers separate sync controls, make sure the history-and-tabs category is included rather than limiting sync to unrelated items.
  5. Repeat the sign-in and sync selection on the other computer or phone.

Google documents the computer settings path in Get your bookmarks, passwords and more on all your devices. A work or school administrator can restrict account or sync features, so a managed profile may not show every option.

After changing the setting, leave the source tab open while you test. Sync is intended to make the tab available in the other-device list; it is not a command to duplicate the source device’s whole window or to replace the tabs already open in the destination window. Open the destination list and select only the pages you need.

Turn on tab sync on Android

Android uses a slightly different control name and destination.

  1. Open Chrome and sign in to the same Google Account used in Chrome on the other device.
  2. Open More > Settings > You and Google.
  3. Choose Manage what you sync. Customize the selection if necessary so Open Tabs remains enabled.
  4. Leave Chrome and use the recent-tabs list described in the next section to open pages from the other device.

Google’s Android guidance, including the option to turn off Open Tabs in sync preferences, is at Get your bookmarks, passwords, and more on all your devices – Android phone & tablet.

If you want Android to provide tabs to a computer as well as receive them, enable Open Tabs on Android and History and tabs on the computer. Turning the category off on either side can make that device’s pages disappear from the shared list even though the account itself is correct.

Open tabs from another device

On a computer

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select More > History.
  3. Choose Tabs from other devices.
  4. Select the device and page you want. Chrome opens the selected page in the current browser session according to its normal tab behavior.

The menu is a browsing list, not a command to reconstruct another device’s entire window. If you need several pages, open them individually from this list or use a synced tab group where appropriate.

Look for the source device name rather than expecting all pages to be merged into one unlabeled stream. A phone, tablet, and multiple computers can each appear as separate devices. If a device was recently signed out, its entries can change as Chrome updates the account’s current tab state.

On Android

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select More > Recent tabs.
  3. Find the other device in the device list and tap a page to open it.

The Android destination is documented in Google’s device-sync help. The exact placement of a device or page can change as tabs are closed and as Chrome refreshes its synced information.

Recent tabs is the place to retrieve a page, not the Android sync-settings screen. Use Manage what you sync to check the Open Tabs category, then return to More > Recent tabs to browse the available devices and pages.

Send one tab immediately instead of syncing a list

For a single page, Chrome has a direct send command. On the computer containing the page, select More > Cast, save, and share > Send to your devices, then choose the signed-in destination device. Google says both devices must be signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account, and the shared tab opens in Chrome on the selected device. The documented workflow is in Share tabs in Chrome – Computer.

Choose this Best for What happens Account requirement
Synced tabs Ongoing access to pages opened on several devices Pages remain available under the other-device or recent-tabs list until their tab state changes Same Google Account in Chrome, with History and tabs/Open Tabs enabled
Send to your devices Delivering one page right now The selected tab opens in Chrome on the destination device Both devices signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account

Use sync when you want a browsable record of open pages. Use Send to your devices when choosing one destination is faster than locating the page in a longer list. Sending is a one-page handoff; it does not replace the need to enable the tabs category if you also want a continuing cross-device list.

How tab groups behave across devices

Tab groups follow the same history-and-tabs sync mechanism. Google states that when browsing history and tabs are synced, changes to tab groups are automatically saved and synced across devices. The explanation appears in Manage tabs in Chrome – Computer.

This means a rename, color change, or membership change can propagate to the other signed-in devices. Treat a group as shared state rather than a local copy: deleting the group removes it on the device where you delete it and on other devices using that Google Account. Do not delete a group as a casual troubleshooting step if another device still needs it.

A safer way to clean up

  • Open the group and identify pages that must remain available.
  • Move essential pages to a separate group or bookmark them before deleting the original group.
  • Allow Chrome time to apply the change before checking another device.

Because group edits are account-wide, a cleanup decision on a laptop can affect a phone that someone is using at the same time. If a group is missing, first determine whether it was deleted or reorganized elsewhere before creating a replacement with the same name.

How long tabs remain available

Tab sync reflects the current state of open tabs. It is not a permanent archive of every URL ever visited. Closing a source tab, deleting a synced group, signing out, or disabling the relevant sync category can change what appears on another device. For pages that must remain available after the browsing session ends, use Chrome history or save a bookmark in addition to relying on the open-tab list.

The destination list may not update at the exact moment you make a change. If a page or device is not visible, first confirm the account and category, then reopen the relevant menu and check again. Avoid repeatedly deleting and recreating groups while diagnosing a delay, because those edits themselves sync and can remove useful state.

Troubleshoot missing or stale tabs

The other device does not appear

  1. Open Chrome’s account area on both devices and verify that the account name is identical. A phone signed in to one account and a computer signed in to another will produce separate tab lists.
  2. Check the sync category: History and tabs on a computer, or Open Tabs under Android’s Manage what you sync.
  3. Confirm you are signed in to Chrome itself, not merely signed in to a Google service in a web page.
  4. Check whether the profile is managed by an organization. Administrative policy can limit sign-in or sync controls.
  5. Close and reopen the relevant Chrome menu after correcting the account or sync selection, then check the other-device list again.

The device appears but a page is missing

  1. Check whether the page was closed on the source device or removed when a tab group was deleted.
  2. Verify that the source device still has the same Chrome profile and account active.
  3. Check the sync category on the source device, not only on the destination.
  4. Reopen Tabs from other devices on a computer or Recent tabs on Android after the settings are corrected.

A page that has become ordinary history rather than an open tab may no longer appear in the other-device tab list. Search Chrome history or use a bookmark when the goal is recovery of an older page rather than continuation of a currently open session.

Sync paused after signing out

Google says Chrome may ask you to verify your identity when sync pauses after you sign out of a Google service. Select the verification prompt and sign in again. The recovery flow is described in Fix issues with sync in Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sync turns off whenever Chrome closes

On a computer, Google provides a separate site-data setting for this symptom. Open Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Additional content settings > On-device site data, then allow sites to save data on the device. Return to Chrome’s account and sync controls afterward and verify that History and tabs is still enabled. Follow the current wording in Google’s sync troubleshooting guide, because privacy settings can be renamed between releases.

A page was closed on one device

Tab sync represents the current tab state, not a permanent archive of every page ever opened. If a page is no longer an open tab, it may not remain in the other-device tab list. Use Chrome history or a bookmark for pages that must be retained independently of an open session.

A group disappeared elsewhere

First check whether someone closed or deleted the group on another device. Because group changes sync, deletion on one device removes the group for the account’s other devices as well. Recreate the group only after confirming that the original was not intentionally removed.

Account, privacy, and incognito considerations

Signing in to Chrome lets Chrome save and synchronize selected browser data to the Google Account. Google provides controls for managing or deleting Chrome data saved in that account and describes an optional passphrase for certain synchronized data. Review the account and sync controls before enabling them on a shared or borrowed computer. Details about the sign-in model are in How sign-in with your Google Account works in Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Incognito browsing does not allow you to sign in to Chrome. You can still sign in to Google web services in an Incognito window, but that is separate from Chrome profile sign-in and does not turn the Incognito session into a normal synced Chrome profile. Keep sensitive work in the appropriate Chrome profile and check which account is active before enabling synchronization.

Before using a shared computer

  • Check the profile avatar and account name so you do not sync personal tabs into someone else’s profile.
  • Use Chrome’s account controls to review what categories are selected.
  • Sign out of Chrome when finished if the computer is not yours.
  • Remember that deleting a synced tab group affects other devices on the same account.

Syncing is an account-level choice, so think about who can use the Chrome profile and what pages should be visible there. A separate Chrome profile or signing out is safer than assuming an Incognito window will isolate a normal profile’s synced tabs.

What is and is not covered by these steps

The documented procedures here cover Chrome on computers and Android phones or tablets. The available guidance does not establish a sufficiently specific current menu path for iPhone or iPad, so do not assume that Android’s Manage what you sync sequence is identical on iOS. On Apple devices, check the labels shown by the current Chrome release and Google’s iOS-specific help before following a platform-specific procedure.

Menu names can also vary by Chrome version, language, account type, and organizational policy. If a label is missing, start from the account page in Chrome Settings and look for the control governing history, tabs, or open tabs rather than relying on an older screenshot.

A practical cross-device workflow

Moving from a computer to Android

  1. On the computer, sign in to Chrome with the account you use on Android and enable History and tabs.
  2. Leave the needed pages open; group related pages if that organization is useful.
  3. On Android, confirm the same account and that Open Tabs is included under Manage what you sync.
  4. Open More > Recent tabs and select the page you want to continue.

Moving from Android to a computer

  1. Keep the page open in Android Chrome.
  2. On the computer, use the same Google Account in Chrome and enable History and tabs.
  3. Open More > History > Tabs from other devices and select the Android device and page.

Sending a single urgent page

  1. Keep both devices signed in to Chrome with the same account.
  2. On the device showing the page, open More > Cast, save, and share > Send to your devices.
  3. Choose the destination device and continue there when Chrome opens the tab.

These workflows separate two decisions: enable sync for a continuing, account-wide tab list; use Send to your devices for a one-page handoff. Once the correct account and category are selected, the device-specific menus are the reliable way to retrieve a page.

Quick checklist

  • Same Google Account is signed in to Chrome on every device.
  • Computer: History and tabs is enabled.
  • Android: Open Tabs is enabled under Manage what you sync.
  • Computer retrieval uses More > History > Tabs from other devices.
  • Android retrieval uses More > Recent tabs.
  • For one immediate page, use Send to your devices.
  • Do not delete a synced tab group unless you intend to remove it from the account’s other devices.
  • If sync pauses, complete Chrome’s identity-verification prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I see tabs from my other device in Chrome?

Verify that Chrome itself—not only a Google website—is signed in to the same Google Account on both devices. Then enable History and tabs on a computer or Open Tabs under Android’s Manage what you sync. Reopen More > History > Tabs from other devices or More > Recent tabs after correcting the settings.

Does Chrome automatically open all my synced tabs?

No. Sync makes the pages available in the other-device list. On a computer, choose a page from More > History > Tabs from other devices; on Android, choose one from More > Recent tabs.

Do Chrome tab groups sync between devices?

Yes, when browsing history and tabs are synced. Group changes are saved and synced across devices, so deleting a group on one device removes it on other devices using that Google Account.

How do I send just one Chrome tab to another device?

On the device showing the page, choose More > Cast, save, and share > Send to your devices, then select the destination. Both devices must be signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account.

Can I use Incognito to sync open tabs?

No. Incognito browsing does not allow sign-in to Chrome. You can sign in to Google services in an Incognito window, but that is separate from a normal synced Chrome profile.

What should I do if Chrome sync pauses after I sign out?

Select Chrome’s identity-verification prompt and sign in again. Google documents this as the recovery step when sync pauses after signing out of a Google service.

Are these exact steps the same on iPhone and iPad?

Do not assume so. The documented paths here cover computers and Android. Check the current Chrome labels and Google’s iOS-specific help for Apple devices.

The Bottom Line

Sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account everywhere, enable History and tabs on computers or Open Tabs on Android, then retrieve pages from the device-specific tab list. Use Send to your devices for a one-page handoff, and remember that synced tab-group changes—including deletion—apply across the account’s devices.
