You can change a YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium membership from its membership settings, or transfer playlists when moving to YouTube Music; neither documented workflow asks you to create a new YouTube channel. These are different tasks, though: changing a subscription is not the same as moving a music library. Before changing anything, confirm the Google account and selected YouTube channel, then follow the relevant steps below.
First, identify what you want to switch
- Changing a YouTube plan: Use this if you want to change or upgrade YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium while continuing to use your existing account and channel.
- Moving music listening to YouTube Music: Use the playlist-transfer workflow if you want to bring playlists from another music service. This transfers supported music-library items; it is not a YouTube channel migration.
YouTube’s help instructions describe membership controls and playlist transfers, but do not guarantee that every channel type, account setting, subscription, or piece of account data is unaffected in every configuration. Check the account and channel shown in YouTube before making an account change.
Change or upgrade a YouTube membership
- Confirm which Google account is signed in. In YouTube or YouTube Music, check the profile shown in the app or website. If you manage more than one channel, confirm that the intended channel is selected before proceeding.
- Open the membership page for the service you use. For YouTube Premium, open the YouTube paid-memberships page. For YouTube Music Premium, open the YouTube Music paid-memberships page described in the same help instructions.
- Select Manage membership. Review the membership and payment preferences shown for the account that is billed. Follow the available options to make the plan or payment change.
- Check the result and billing provider. Confirm the membership shown after the change and note whether YouTube, Apple, Google Play, or another provider handles billing. The available choices and displayed price can depend on the account and billing route.
YouTube’s documented family-to-individual membership change applies across YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids. It uses paid-membership controls rather than instructing members to make a new channel; it should not be read as a universal guarantee about every channel-specific setting or account configuration.
India: check recurring-payment verification
In India, YouTube says recurring memberships may require verification or re-entry of payment details under Reserve Bank of India eMandate requirements. Whether recurring payments work can depend on the bank and payment method. If YouTube prompts you to verify a mandate or update details, follow the prompt and check which provider is billing the membership. If a payment fails or a membership does not renew as expected, confirm with that provider that recurring payments are supported and authorized for the account. Check for overlapping memberships before adding a plan
YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium benefits. If you have both memberships and do not need a separate Music Premium subscription, check whether it can be canceled to avoid duplicate charges. The right cancellation route depends on who bills you: a subscription purchased through Apple, Google Play, or another partner may need to be canceled with that provider, not in YouTube.
A recently canceled membership may remain active until the end of its billing period. You may need to wait until that period ends before purchasing another plan. Review YouTube’s guidance on duplicate Premium subscriptions, and verify the active plan and billing provider in your own account. Current prices are not established here; use the membership screen that applies to your account rather than relying on a price quoted for another region or billing route.

India plan choice: Premium Lite or YouTube Premium
On 12 March 2026, Google announced that Premium Lite background play and downloads were rolling out in India for most videos. That scope is not the same as all-video coverage or all YouTube Music Premium functionality. Google distinguishes it from YouTube Premium, which it says covers all videos ad-free, offline, and in the background, including music content and YouTube Music Premium benefits. Use the membership screen available to your account to compare its current options and price. Decide based on whether you need ad-free viewing for all videos or most videos, music-content coverage, background play and downloads, and the payment provider and recurring-payment support available to you. Do not assume Premium Lite includes the full Music Premium benefits.

Transfer playlists to YouTube Music
If by “switch services” you mean moving a music library, YouTube Music offers direct playlist transfer guidance for Apple Music. For services without a direct transfer workflow—including Spotify and Amazon Music examples—YouTube says third-party tools may be able to transfer playlists, albums, artists, and tracks. Its help page names Soundiiz and TuneMyMusic as examples, but says Google has no formal relationship with those services and does not guarantee their quality.
- Open YouTube Music’s transfer guidance. Start at Transfer your playlists from another service and select the instructions for your source service.
- Choose the appropriate route. Use the direct Apple Music workflow where available. For other services, review the third-party tool’s permissions, terms, and supported content before connecting accounts or authorizing a transfer.
- Run the transfer and allow time for it to finish. YouTube says a transfer can take several hours. Check the destination playlists when it completes rather than assuming every item matched.
- Review unmatched or incorrect tracks manually. Songs may fail to match between catalogs. Compare important playlists with the originals and add or replace missing items yourself.
A transfer is not a full account migration or continuing synchronization. YouTube’s guidance says the music remains in the original service, changes made in YouTube Music do not automatically sync between services, and podcasts cannot be imported or exported. Those limits matter if you plan to keep editing playlists in both places.

Country, availability, and account checks
Premium features can vary by geography, device, and operating system. YouTube’s paid-service terms say a Premium service should be used from the country where the subscription was signed up; predominant use outside that country or misrepresenting the sign-up country may violate the terms and can result in loss of access. Use the plan and payment options presented for your actual country rather than relying on a location workaround. Read the YouTube Paid Service Terms.
