The key connects your encoder’s outgoing feed to YouTube—it does not choose which video plays. In OBS, you can use a VLC Video source to play a playlist, but test the change first: YouTube and OBS do not promise every switch will be gap-free.
What to change when you want different videos to play
Your encoder sends a continuous output to YouTube, while its scenes and sources determine the picture and sound in that output. To change the content, update the encoder’s media source or playlist. Do not reset or replace the stream key just because you are changing videos.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” You create a key in YouTube and enter it in your encoder so YouTube can accept the feed. Playlist selection happens on the encoder side, not through the key. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Switch a playlist in OBS using a VLC Video source
Before you start
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Prepare the media files and playlist you intend to use, and confirm that the files play with the expected audio.
- Keep the existing YouTube stream and key configured in OBS. Do not share the key publicly.
Steps
- Check the YouTube destination and key. In YouTube Studio, open the stream in Live Control Room and note which stream and configured key your encoder uses. YouTube’s instructions explain that the encoder needs the Live server URL and stream key to send its feed. YouTube Help: Stream with an encoder
- Add or prepare the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and load the media files you want to play. Configure its playlist as needed; OBS documents loop and shuffle options. You can also set up the source’s next/previous playback hotkeys if you want to change items using the keyboard. OBS: VLC Video Source
- Leave the stream connection alone. Keep the same YouTube stream and key in OBS. Use the VLC source’s playback controls or configured hotkeys to change the playing item or playlist. The encoder continues sending its output; the source controls which media appears in that output. This follows how YouTube describes the encoder connection and OBS describes sources, but it is not a guarantee of a seamless transition. OBS: Scenes and Sources
- Check the result. Watch the OBS preview for the new picture and listen for the expected audio. If applicable, also check the Live Control Room preview. When starting a stream, YouTube instructs creators to wait for the preview before clicking Go live; for an in-progress playlist change, use the previews to confirm what is being sent.
Will viewers see an interruption?
Not necessarily, but there is no universal guarantee that a playlist change will be invisible. The result can depend on how the source reloads, media decoding, audio routing, encoder configuration, and network stability. The official OBS and YouTube guidance does not prescribe one transition method or promise uninterrupted switching.

Test the actual files, playlist, and OBS setup before relying on a change during a broadcast. Check both image and sound, including what happens at the boundary between clips. If OBS continues sending the same output to the same YouTube stream, changing the content does not by itself require a new key; any interruption is a separate source or connection issue.
When should you change or reset the stream key?
A playlist change alone is not a documented reason to reset a key. YouTube documents resetting a key when you need a replacement, such as if the key has been compromised. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it.

- In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live and choose Stream.
- Find Stream key and select Reset.
- Copy the replacement key into the encoder’s stream settings. Confirm that it is paired with the correct YouTube stream and server URL.
YouTube also lets you reuse stream settings when creating a new stream; the new stream copies the prior metadata, settings, and stream key. These are stream setup and key-management options, not steps for selecting a different playlist. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
If you use RTMPS
YouTube documents RTMPS as an encrypted RTMP option for compatible encoders. If you configure it, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and keep the key paired with the correct connection. RTMPS is a transport choice; it does not determine which playlist plays. YouTube Help: Stream using RTMPS

Troubleshoot a playlist switch
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then check OBS for the source again.
- The old video keeps playing: Check that you changed the intended VLC source and that the new media is in its playlist. Use the source’s playback controls or configured next/previous hotkeys.
- The new video appears but has no sound: Check the source’s audio routing and confirm the media file itself plays with audio. Test the specific file before switching during a live broadcast.
- The preview is black, delayed, or otherwise wrong: Check whether the source has reloaded and whether OBS can decode the file. Verify the result in OBS before relying on Live Control Room’s preview.
- YouTube reports an ingest or connection problem: Troubleshoot the encoder connection, server URL, and configured key separately from the playlist. Do not reset a key solely because you changed content.
