You can automate a YouTube playlist change for sunrise and sunset, but IST alone cannot tell you when either event occurs: you must choose a geographic location and calculate its local sunrise and sunset for each date. Then schedule authorized YouTube API calls for those instants. First decide whether you mean changing playlist items or changing which live broadcast is on air—YouTube handles those as different operations.
What “switch the playlist” can mean
YouTube separates a playlist, its playlist items, a live broadcast, and the incoming live stream. A playlist change does not switch the active live broadcast.

- Change playlist content or order: add, remove, or update playlist items. A playlist item is a resource that associates included content with a playlist. The YouTube Data API provides list, insert, update, and delete operations for these items (PlaylistItems).
- Change playlist details: update playlist metadata, a separate operation from changing its items (Playlists: update).
- Change which live event is on air: schedule and transition broadcast resources through the Live Streaming API. A broadcast is the event; a stream is the incoming audio-video feed that can be bound to it (YouTube Live Streaming API Overview).
Choose the first option if viewers should see a different playlist selection or ordering. Choose the broadcast workflow if a different scheduled live event should become active at sunrise or sunset.

Why IST is not enough to set the trigger
Sunrise and sunset depend on a location as well as a date. IST is a time zone, not a universal sunrise schedule: the sunrise instant differs by location, and the event shifts across dates. Specify the intended geographic location, calculate that date’s solar event for that location, and convert the resulting instant to IST for your scheduler. Do not use one fixed IST time as a general sunrise or sunset trigger.

The sources here do not establish a particular solar calculator or calculation method. Select and validate a location-appropriate method independently; do not assume the YouTube API calculates solar events for you. Account for the local date changing at different times in IST when the chosen location is outside India.
Build the automation as three separate systems
1. Solar-event calculation
For each target date, calculate sunrise and sunset for the chosen location. Pass the resulting instants—not generic clock times—to the scheduler, with a clear rule for the date and time-zone conversion. Decide how to handle a missing or invalid calculation rather than silently falling back to a constant time.

2. Scheduler
Schedule a job for each calculated event instant. The scheduler is responsible for waking up and initiating the intended action; YouTube does not provide a sunrise/sunset scheduler in the API operations described here. Add operational safeguards: log each run, retry temporary failures with limits, alert on repeated failures, and reconcile missed invocations so a paused scheduler does not leave the playlist or broadcast in the wrong state. These are implementation safeguards, not guarantees provided by YouTube.

3. YouTube API operation
At the trigger, call the authorized API operation that matches your chosen meaning of “switch”: mutate playlist items, update playlist metadata, or transition a broadcast. Keep that action distinct from both calculating the solar event and running the scheduled job.

Automate playlist content or ordering
- Identify the target playlist and current items. Use the authorized playlist implementation workflow and playlistItems.list to retrieve the items and their resource identifiers. The official reference lists a quota cost of 1 unit per list call; quota figures can change, so verify the current reference before implementation.
- Choose the right mutation. Use insert to add an item, delete to remove one, or update to change an existing playlist item. If the change concerns playlist details rather than the included videos or their order, use the playlist operation instead.
- Authorize the request. Playlist item changes require authorization. Protect the credentials used by the unattended scheduler and ensure the account has access to the playlist.
- Preserve fields when updating. An update request must identify the item, its playlist, and its included resource. YouTube warns that omitted mutable values may be cleared, so construct the update with all mutable values that should remain set. Consult PlaylistItems: update for the current request shape. The official reference lists a quota cost of 50 units per update call; recheck that figure before implementation.
- Verify the result. Read the playlist items again after the mutation and check the resulting membership and order against the intended sunrise or sunset state. Make retries safe: before repeating a failed or timed-out request, determine whether the first call actually took effect.
Automate a change in the live broadcast
If sunrise and sunset should start different live events, changing a playlist item is not enough. Use the Live Streaming API’s broadcast and stream resources.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. A scheduled broadcast requires a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. See LiveBroadcasts: insert. Use the calculated event instant in the scheduled start time.
- Bind an incoming stream. A broadcast must be associated with an incoming stream before it can use that feed. The API’s bind operation connects the resources.
- Choose stream reuse deliberately. YouTube documents both reusing one stream for multiple recurring broadcasts and using separate streams. In its common recurring-event example, one stream is bound to multiple broadcast resources, with only one event live at a time. Select the pattern that suits your encoder and event setup; do not assume playlist changes make this binding or event selection for you. See Implementation: Broadcasts and Streams.
- Check that the bound stream is active. Before transitioning a broadcast to testing or live, confirm that its bound stream is active. Then request the appropriate broadcast transition.
- Exercise the lifecycle before relying on it. YouTube documents a testing stage and describes monitor-stream settings for testing in its Life of a Broadcast guidance. Validate the schedule, binding, active-stream check, and transition on a non-public or otherwise appropriate setup first.
Choose a scheduling and implementation approach
| Decision | Option | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| What changes at the event? | Playlist item mutation | Changes playlist membership or ordering; does not transition the live broadcast. |
| What changes at the event? | Broadcast transition | Changes the live event through broadcast resources; requires the relevant scheduled broadcast, stream binding, and active-stream check. |
| How do recurring broadcasts use feeds? | Reuse a stream | YouTube documents reusing one stream across multiple broadcasts in a recurring-event scenario; plan for only one event live at a time in that example. |
| How do recurring broadcasts use feeds? | Separate streams | YouTube documents this as another implementation approach. Choose based on the feed and encoder arrangement you need. |
| Where does the job run? | Hosted scheduler | Compare its date/time-zone handling, retry controls, logging, alerting, credential storage, and ongoing maintenance. |
| Where does the job run? | Self-managed scheduler | You control the runtime and operational safeguards, but must keep it available, secure OAuth credentials, handle retries, and maintain location-specific event calculations. |
The API comparison above reflects YouTube’s guidance on Understanding Broadcasts and Streams and Implementation: Broadcasts and Streams. A hosted scheduler is not automatically more accurate: the location and date calculation still need to be correct.

Common failures and fixes
- The change happens at the wrong sunrise or sunset: check that the calculation uses the intended location and date, then verify the conversion to IST. Do not substitute a fixed all-India clock time.
- The job runs but the playlist is unchanged: verify OAuth authorization, playlist and item identifiers, and the API response. For an update, include the required playlist and included-resource data and preserve mutable values that should remain set.
- An update removes details you expected to keep: review the update request for omitted mutable fields; YouTube warns they may be cleared. Reconstruct the request with the values that must persist.
- The API call fails after a scheduler retry: inspect the current playlist or broadcast state before retrying. A timeout does not prove the original mutation failed; avoid duplicate inserts or conflicting transitions.
- A broadcast will not transition to testing or live: confirm that the intended broadcast is bound to the correct incoming stream and that the stream is active before requesting the transition.
- A recurring broadcast uses the wrong event: review which broadcast resource is scheduled and which stream is bound to it. Playlist contents and broadcast selection are separate controls.
- The scheduler misses an event: log the missed invocation and reconcile the actual playlist or broadcast state before applying the intended change. A catch-up action should account for whether the event is already over and whether a newer event has since become due.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is keeping uploaded video live on YouTube without maintaining your own always-on computer, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-streaming option—not a sunrise/sunset API scheduler or a tool for switching broadcasts. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. For this API-driven sunrise/sunset workflow, you would still need your own location-based calculation, scheduler, and YouTube API logic.
