Android does not offer one universal “default weather app” switch. On a Pixel phone, you can change defaults only for supported app actions under Settings > Apps > Default apps, and Google’s published list does not include a Weather category. If you want a particular app’s forecast on your home screen, add that app’s widget or shortcut instead. That changes what you see and how you open the app; it does not make the app a system-wide weather provider.
Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android software version. Use the Pixel instructions below as a concrete example, then apply the equivalent settings or search terms on your own phone.

What “default weather app” means on Android
The phrase can describe two different goals:
- Choosing an app to handle a supported Android action. Android uses defaults when an action can be completed by more than one compatible app. For example, a phone may let you choose an app for browsing, dialing or another documented category. The selected app handles that particular action.
- Choosing which app shows weather on your home screen. This is normally done with a widget, app icon or shortcut. It is a home-screen arrangement, not a universal operating-system weather setting.
Those functions are separate. Selecting an app in a listed default-app category does not automatically replace every forecast, weather card or widget on the phone. Likewise, placing a weather widget on the home screen does not register that app as Android’s handler for unrelated actions.
Android’s documented role and default-app categories include items such as browser, dialer, home and SMS. Google’s Pixel instructions do not show a standard Weather category. A phone maker can add its own weather-specific control, but the absence of Weather from Pixel’s published route means you should not expect the same switch on every Android device.

First, identify the result you actually want

If you simply want a different forecast visible when you unlock the phone, skip the default-app menu and use the widget instructions below.
Change a supported default on a Pixel phone
These are Google’s documented Pixel steps. They apply only to categories that your phone actually lists.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps. Depending on the software release, the page may be labeled or positioned slightly differently.
- Choose the category for the action you want to change.
- Select the compatible app you want Android to use.
Android should use the new selection the next time that particular action is invoked. If you do not see a Weather entry, that is expected on the Pixel route documented by Google; it is not a sign that the menu failed to load.
Why a weather app may not appear in the list
The Default apps page does not list every installed application. It lists supported categories and apps that can handle each category. A weather application can provide forecasts and widgets without declaring itself as a handler for a system-wide Android action. Installing, updating or uninstalling several weather apps therefore may not change the categories shown in this menu.

Put your preferred weather app on the home screen
For most people, a widget is the practical equivalent of switching a “default weather app.” It places current conditions or a forecast where you can see it without opening a settings page.
- Go to an empty area of the home screen.
- Touch and hold the empty space until the customization controls appear.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll to, or search for, the weather app you want to use.
- Touch and hold the desired widget, then drag it to the home screen. On some launchers, tapping the widget starts the placement process instead.
- Release it in the preferred location and complete any setup the app requests, such as selecting a city or allowing location access.
Widget names, sizes and configuration screens come from the app and the phone’s launcher. If the widget is not available, open the app once, finish its initial setup, check for an update, and look in the Widgets panel again. Some apps provide only an icon or shortcut rather than a widget.
Use an icon or shortcut instead
If a widget is too large or the app does not supply one, place its icon on the home screen or add an app shortcut when the launcher offers that option. This gives you one-tap access to the preferred forecast. It still affects only home-screen access; other parts of Android may continue to show weather from their own services or widgets.

If you selected an app for a supported action and Android now opens it automatically, you can remove that choice and restore the chooser prompt.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app that currently opens automatically.
- Tap Open by default.
- Tap Clear default preferences.
The wording can vary slightly. After clearing the preference, start the same action again. If more than one compatible app is available, Android can ask which one to use. Choosing an app as “Always” will save a new default; choosing “Just once” leaves the decision available for the next attempt.
Clearing a default does not uninstall the app, delete its data or remove its widget. It only removes the saved handler preference for the supported action shown on that screen.
What to do on Samsung, Motorola and other Android phones
Manufacturers can rearrange Settings and add their own launcher or weather features, so the Pixel path is an example rather than a universal promise. Start with these approaches:

- Search for Widgets when your goal is a home-screen forecast.
- Search for the weather app’s name to find its app-info, shortcut or permission settings.
- Open the phone maker’s support instructions if the labels or menu order do not match.
Once you reach a Default apps page, select only a category that is actually listed. Do not assume a category called Weather exists because a third-party weather application is installed. If the manufacturer supplies a weather panel, lock-screen card or assistant integration, it may have a separate setting outside Android’s standard default-app screen.

Troubleshooting: when the change does not seem to work
There is no Weather category
On Pixel, Google’s documented categories do not include Weather. Use the app’s widget, icon or shortcut for a home-screen forecast. On another phone, check the manufacturer’s documentation before concluding that the feature is unavailable; the maker may use a different label or a separate weather setting.
The widget is missing
- Confirm that the weather app is installed and open it once.
- Complete its first-run setup, including any location or city selection it requires.
- Return to the home screen, open the Widgets panel and search by the app’s name.
- Check whether the launcher has enough open space for the widget size you selected.
- If the app offers no widget, use its icon or shortcut instead.
The old forecast is still visible
Remove the old weather widget from the home screen before placing the new one. A phone can display multiple weather widgets at the same time, so seeing the previous forecast does not mean Android ignored your new app. Also check other home-screen pages, the lock screen and any manufacturer-provided glance panel, each of which can have its own weather display.
Android keeps opening the old app
Clear that app’s default preferences through Settings > Apps > [app] > Open by default > Clear default preferences, then repeat the action and choose the preferred compatible app. If the old app opens only from a particular widget or shortcut, edit or remove that widget or shortcut; it may be explicitly tied to the old app rather than controlled by a system default.
The menu labels do not match
Android software is customized by each manufacturer and can change between releases. Search Settings for “Default apps,” “Widgets” or the app’s name. If search returns no useful result, consult the phone maker’s current support page for your model and software version. Do not rely on a Pixel menu path as proof that another device has the same controls.
Understand the limits of a “default” weather choice
A weather app can supply its own forecast, widget and shortcut while Android’s system surfaces continue to use different providers. For example, a home-screen widget may come from one app while a manufacturer’s lock-screen panel uses another service. Android’s intent-resolution system chooses an app when a particular action has compatible handlers; it is not a promise that one provider will replace every weather display.
That is why the most reliable setup is often a combination:
- Use Settings > Apps > Default apps only for categories your phone exposes and for which you genuinely want to change the handler.
- Use the preferred weather app’s widget for information you want visible on the home screen.
- Keep an icon or shortcut available for opening the full forecast and settings.
- Remove obsolete widgets and clear old defaults when Android continues to launch an unwanted app.
A quick decision checklist
- Want a forecast visible immediately? Add the preferred app’s widget.
- Want one-tap access without a widget? Add its icon or shortcut.
- Want to change an app that opens for a documented Android action? Use Settings > Apps > Default apps and select a listed category.
- Want Android to ask again? Open the app’s Open by default page and clear its default preferences.
- Cannot find the same labels? Search Settings and follow the phone maker’s instructions for your model.
The key distinction is simple: Android’s defaults are action-specific, while a weather widget is a home-screen choice. On a Pixel, there is no documented universal Weather default category, so the widget or shortcut route is the appropriate way to make a particular weather app your everyday source.
