For scheduled playback of prerecorded media, YouTube lists the standalone AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream feature. For choosing among HDMI sources while live, use a hardware switcher such as the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro and connect a separate playback device. The reviewed product information does not establish that either device lets you freely select arbitrary stored video files on demand during a live broadcast.
First decide what you need to switch
There are two different workflows behind this question:
- Scheduled playback: prerecorded media is set up to play at planned times while the stream runs. YouTube describes this capability for AJA HELO Plus through PlayToStream.
- Live source switching: you select between connected cameras or other HDMI sources while broadcasting. A switcher such as ATEM Mini Pro can switch inputs, but video files need a device to play them into an input.
Scheduling a file is not the same as browsing stored files and choosing the next one at any moment while live. YouTube’s description of the AJA feature does not confirm that on-demand workflow, so check the exact controls and media compatibility with the manufacturer before buying.
Option 1: Schedule prerecorded playback with AJA HELO Plus
YouTube’s encoder guide identifies AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and says its PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media for direct streaming to YouTube Live without a computer. This is the closest documented fit if you want a stream to play prepared videos on a schedule without keeping a PC running. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

- Confirm with AJA that the current PlayToStream workflow supports your files and the schedule you need; the YouTube description establishes scheduled playback, not live, arbitrary file selection.
- Configure the encoder with YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel’s live event.
- Set up the media schedule in the device’s supported workflow and check the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live there when you are ready to broadcast.
YouTube says first-time enablement of live streaming can take up to 24 hours, depending on the account and setup. Enable live streaming and verify access before the time your broadcast is due to start.
Option 2: Switch HDMI sources with ATEM Mini Pro
Blackmagic Design lists ATEM Mini Pro as a four-input HDMI switcher with a hardware streaming engine, recording, and transitions. It is suitable for a setup where you need to choose between connected sources without using a PC as the switcher. Its product information does not establish that the ATEM Mini Pro plays video files by itself; for prerecorded clips, connect a separate device that can play them over HDMI. - Connect each camera or playback device to one of the ATEM Mini Pro’s HDMI inputs.
- Prepare the playback device to output the video in a format accepted by the switcher. A file stored elsewhere cannot be selected by the switcher unless a connected device plays it.
- Configure the hardware streaming engine with YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- Start streaming from the switcher and confirm the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
- Use the switcher’s controls to cut or transition between connected inputs. To show another prerecorded video, operate the playback device and switch to its input.
This workflow avoids a dedicated streaming PC, but it is not a single-box file playlist solution: switching and video playback are separate jobs.
Option 3: Use an iPad-based mobile setup
Roland AeroCaster uses an iPad app and hardware control surface to switch cameras, media, and scenes, and can stream to YouTube over Wi-Fi or cellular. It may suit a mobile production where using an iPad and other mobile devices is acceptable. It is not described as a fully self-contained encoder for scheduled prerecorded playback. Set up YouTube before the broadcast
YouTube’s basic encoder workflow is to enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder, start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then select Go live. Follow the current instructions in YouTube Help for the account and encoder you use. Do not share the stream key, and verify the event is receiving the intended video before making it public.
Troubleshooting the no-PC workflow
- No preview in Live Control Room: confirm the encoder is running, the server URL and stream key match the YouTube event, and the device has network access. Re-enter the key carefully if needed.
- ATEM switches inputs but not files: that is expected if no playback source is connected. Start the video on an HDMI-connected player, then switch to that input.
- You need to pick a stored file during the live show: do not assume scheduled-playback support provides an on-demand file browser. Confirm that exact operation with AJA, or use a separate playback device and a switcher.
- Live streaming is not enabled in time: YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Complete account setup and test the stream before the planned start.
