You can move to a Chromebook without abandoning your documents or daily routines, but the migration has three separate parts: sync Chrome with your Google Account, transfer local files independently, and test replacements for desktop-only software and hardware. Follow the sequence below, keep the old computer untouched until verification is complete, and you will know exactly what works online, offline and with your existing devices.
What moves automatically—and what does not
Chrome settings follow your Google Account only after you sign in to Chrome on the old computer and enable the sync categories you need. Sign in to the Chromebook with that same account and Google says it will show your account photo and your synced settings, bookmarks and extensions. The official wording is: "Once you’re set up, your Chromebook will automatically show your Google Account photo and all your settings, bookmarks, and extensions from Chrome." See Google’s Chromebook switching guide and the details in Sync your account settings.

- Usually brought over by Chrome sync: bookmarks, extensions, Chrome apps where supported, history, saved passwords and other categories you select. Wi-Fi networks can also be included in sync settings.
- Not copied by browser sync: files in Downloads, documents stored only on the old computer, application data kept in local folders and files on removable drives.
- Not guaranteed by account sign-in: a Windows or macOS desktop program, a printer driver, a proprietary plug-in, a specialist codec or a peripheral that needs an unsupported connector.
Treat the move as a migration, not a reset. Your account can recreate the browser environment, but your files and work tools still need a deliberate plan.
Make a compatibility inventory before you buy or set up the Chromebook
Write down the work you must continue for the next month. This prevents a pleasant browser migration from hiding one critical task that still depends on a desktop application.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
List the files you actually use
- Word documents, Excel workbooks and PowerPoint presentations, including templates, macros, linked data and unusual fonts.
- Photos, video, audio, scanned documents, archives and any files opened directly from Downloads.
- Project folders shared with colleagues, files that must remain in a particular format, and material subject to a retention or privacy rule.
List the applications and services behind your routine
- Email, calendar, messaging, note-taking, accounting, design, development and document-signing tools.
- Any application that works only on Windows or macOS, or that requires a locally installed plug-in.
- Printers, scanners, cameras, drawing tablets, USB security keys, external drives and other accessories.
For each item, record the exact task rather than only the product name: for example, "edit a 200-page contract with tracked changes," "import footage from an SD card," or "run a local development server." Then test that task on the Chromebook, because a file opening is not proof that every feature, shortcut or peripheral works.
Choose a transfer route: Drive, removable storage or another cloud service
Google’s switching instructions present two core routes: upload files to Google Drive or copy them to compatible external storage such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive. A different cloud provider can also be used through its website or, where supported, the Files app.
| Route | Best when | What to check first | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | You have reliable internet and want files available on multiple devices. | Available account storage, upload time, folder permissions and whether the files must be available offline. | Large transfers depend on bandwidth and your account quota. |
| USB flash drive or external hard drive | You have a large data set, slow internet or a second local backup requirement. | Drive filesystem, Chromebook connector, adapter or hub needs, and enough free capacity. | You must copy and verify the data yourself; a lost or damaged drive is not a cloud backup. |
| Another supported cloud service | Your existing work already lives with that provider. | Web sign-in, Files integration and offline behavior for that service. | Features and integration vary, so test the exact folders and sharing controls. |
Keep the old computer and at least one second copy until you have opened representative files on the Chromebook. Do not erase or recycle the old device immediately after an upload appears to finish.

- Open Chrome on the old computer and sign in with the Google Account you will use on the Chromebook.
- Open Chrome settings, select the sync and Google services area, and review the categories being synchronized. Include bookmarks, extensions, passwords, history and Wi-Fi networks only if they fit your security and privacy requirements.
- Wait for synchronization to complete. On a second device, confirm that a small set of bookmarks, an extension and a saved setting appear before you depend on the process.
- Export or separately record anything that Chrome sync does not cover, such as files in Downloads, local browser profiles, application license keys and custom configuration files.
Passwords deserve special care. Confirm that the account is protected with a recovery method and, if your organization manages the account, follow its password and multi-factor authentication rules. Do not assume that a locally stored password database or a browser extension’s private vault will migrate simply because bookmarks do.
Transfer local files to the Chromebook
Option 1: upload to Google Drive
- On the old computer, open Google Drive in a browser and create a clearly named migration folder, such as
Chromebook transfer, with subfolders for Documents, Photos, Media and Archive. - Upload files in manageable groups. Leave the browser open until each group reports completion, and compare the source folder’s file count with Drive’s contents.
- On the Chromebook, open the Files app and select Google Drive or Computers in the left panel. Open several files from each important folder.
- For files needed without internet access, use the relevant app’s download or offline-availability command and then test the file while disconnected.
Each Google Account includes 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, according to Google’s Chromebook overview at Learn about Chromebooks. That is an account allowance, not a promise that all migration data will fit. Check the storage meter before starting a large upload.

Option 2: copy from a USB drive or external hard drive
- On the old computer, copy the migration folders to the external device rather than moving the only originals. Eject the device safely and keep the source copy intact.
- Connect the device to the Chromebook. If the Chromebook has USB-C and the drive has a different connector, use a compatible adapter or hub; do not force a plug.
- Open the Files app, select the external device, highlight the folders and choose Copy. Select My files or a chosen local folder as the destination, then paste.
- Open files from the copied destination, not just from the drive. Confirm names, sizes and a few files from every important format before disconnecting the drive.
When a device does not appear, the cause may be an unsupported filesystem, a power or connector problem, encryption the Chromebook cannot unlock, or an organizational policy. Check Google’s current list of file types and external devices that work on Chromebooks before reformatting anything. Reformatting destroys the data on the device, so copy the files elsewhere first.
Option 3: use another cloud provider
Sign in to the provider’s web app on the Chromebook, or look for it in Files if the service supplies Chromebook integration. Download a small sample, edit it and upload it back before moving the entire archive. Sharing permissions, placeholder files and offline controls can differ from Google Drive.
Keep an Office workflow without assuming desktop parity
Office compatibility has two separate questions: can the Chromebook open the file, and can it preserve the features your work requires? Google documents two cloud-based paths.
| Path | How it works | Account or storage requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 | Connect the Chromebook’s Files app to OneDrive, then open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files through the Microsoft service. | A Microsoft 365/OneDrive sign-in and internet access for the described cloud workflow. | Verify subscription status, advanced formatting, macros, add-ins, fonts and collaboration requirements against your documents. |
| Google Docs, Sheets and Slides | Open an Office file in the corresponding Google editor and, when prompted, move or convert it to Drive. | A Google Account and Drive storage; internet access for the described cloud editing path. | Conversion can change layout, formulas, fonts or specialized features. Keep an original Office copy until the converted result is approved. |
Follow the exact setup in Google’s Office-file instructions. Do not interpret an opening preview as full editing support. Google’s file-type list includes .doc, .docx, .xls and .xlsx; it lists .ppt and .pptx as read-only in that file-type context. The separate Office guidance describes editing through Microsoft 365 or Google editors, so test the actual presentation, workbook or document route you intend to use.
Test an Office document before the old computer is retired
- Choose one representative file containing the formatting or feature that matters most.
- Open it through your chosen route, edit a copy, save it, close it and reopen it.
- Check page breaks, fonts, formulas, charts, comments, tracked changes, images and print output as applicable.
- Exchange the edited copy with a colleague or open it on the old computer to confirm that the required format survived.
If a document depends on macros, uncommon add-ins, embedded objects or exact pagination, treat that as a specialist compatibility case rather than promising a seamless conversion.

- For notes and checklists, choose a service that supports the offline behavior you need, then test a note while disconnected.
- For photo and video work, verify the input codec, storage location and export format before moving the entire library.
- For printing or scanning, add the device from ChromeOS settings where supported and perform a real scan or two-page print. A device being visible on the network does not prove every function works.
- For file naming and folder conventions, recreate the same top-level structure in Drive or My files so muscle memory and shared instructions remain useful.
Google’s switching guide includes suggestions for productivity and other categories, but those suggestions are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular desktop application has an equivalent.
Plan for offline work before you need it
A Chromebook can be productive without a continuous connection only when the apps and files were prepared for that situation. Google describes offline-ready examples including Gmail, Keep, Drive apps, Calendar and locally stored media. The Office guidance specifically says the described Google and Microsoft cloud editing routes do not work offline.
- Make a list of tasks you perform during travel, outages or locations with weak service.
- While online, mark the required Drive files or download local copies according to the app’s instructions.
- Open Gmail, Keep, Calendar or other chosen apps and enable their offline option where available.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi and mobile data, then perform the real task: edit a document, read an itinerary, play media or capture notes.
- Reconnect and confirm that queued changes synchronize without creating duplicate or conflicting files.
Do not call a workflow offline-capable until it passes that disconnected test. Cloud storage visibility alone is not offline access.
Check file formats, codecs and external storage
Before copying a media archive or reformatting a drive, compare your files and hardware with Google’s supported list at File types and external devices that work on Chromebooks. The page lists supported file types and filesystem families and warns that AMR, GSM, AVI and MPEG4 are no longer supported according to that guidance.

- Archives: test an archive you must extract, not merely one you can download.
- Drives: identify the filesystem and encryption used by each external disk. Never reformat until a second copy is verified.
- Connectors: match USB-A, USB-C, card-reader and display requirements; an adapter or hub may be necessary but can introduce power or compatibility limits.
Linux and specialist development workflows
On supported Chromebooks, the Linux development environment can provide command-line tools, code editors and IDEs. It is not a blanket replacement for every desktop development setup. Google’s Linux guidance notes limitations including unsupported cameras and Android emulators, and a work or school administrator may disable or restrict Linux. Read Set up Linux on your Chromebook before relying on it.
Validate the development task
- Confirm that the language runtime, package manager, editor, container or command-line tool you need can run in the Linux environment.
- Check access to USB devices, cameras, emulators, GPUs, local ports and corporate networks.
- Ask an administrator whether policy permits Linux and whether storage or network controls apply.
Move a Linux environment carefully
Use Google’s backup and restore process in Back up and restore your Linux files and apps. A backup can be restored to another Chromebook only when the architectures match, such as x86 to x86 or ARM to ARM. Keep your source project repository and a separate backup; do not treat the Chromebook container backup as the only copy.
Sign in and finish Chromebook setup
- Start the Chromebook and connect to a trusted network.
- At the sign-in screen, use the same Google Account whose Chrome data you prepared. Google’s sign-in instructions explain account and managed-device behavior.
- Complete updates, recovery and security prompts before copying irreplaceable files.
- Open Chrome and confirm bookmarks, extensions and selected sync categories.
- Open Files and inspect Google Drive, My files and any connected external storage.
- Set the default locations and notification settings that match your working habits, then test your highest-priority task.
If the Chromebook belongs to an employer or school, the administrator may control sign-in, storage, Linux, extensions and external devices. A personal migration plan cannot override those policies.
Verify the migration before retiring the old computer
- Open at least one file from every important folder and format.
- Compare a sample of filenames, sizes and modified dates with the originals.
- Edit and save a representative Office file through the chosen route, then reopen it.
- Disconnect from the internet and perform each task you expect to do offline.
- Print, scan, import media or connect external equipment that your work depends on.
- Confirm that shared links, folder permissions and collaboration invitations still work.
- Check that passwords, recovery methods and multi-factor authentication are usable.
- Make a fresh backup from the Chromebook before deleting anything on the old computer.
Only after these checks pass should you wipe, sell or repurpose the old computer. Retain the original files until the new backup has been opened and you have completed at least one normal work cycle.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
Bookmarks or extensions are missing
Confirm that Chrome on the old computer used the intended Google Account, that synchronization was enabled for the missing category and that the Chromebook uses the same account. Managed accounts can restrict sync or extensions. Recheck sync settings rather than repeatedly reinstalling extensions.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Downloads disappeared
This is expected: Downloads do not automatically follow browser sync. Copy the Downloads folder to Drive or removable storage, then place the needed files in the Chromebook’s chosen destination.
The external drive is not visible
Try a different port or powered hub, confirm the connector, and test the drive on the old computer. Check its filesystem and encryption against Google’s supported-device guidance. Do not format it until the data exists elsewhere.
An Office file opens but looks wrong
Open the original in the other Office route, compare the critical pages or sheets and look for unsupported fonts, macros, add-ins, formulas or embedded objects. Keep the original format and use the route that preserves the required feature; conversion is not automatically lossless.
Recommended Free Tools
The task works online but fails offline
Enable the app’s offline setting or download the file while connected, then test with all network connections disabled. If the app’s documented editing path is cloud-only, plan a different offline tool or keep access to another computer for that task.
Linux backup will not restore
Check the architecture of both Chromebooks. Google’s restore guidance requires matching architectures, such as x86 to x86 or ARM to ARM. If they differ, restore project files separately and recreate the environment rather than forcing the container backup.
Use this decision rule for the final handover
Switch completely when three conditions are true: your browser data is visible under the correct account, every important file has a verified copy and a tested opening path, and each essential task—including offline, Office, Linux and hardware-dependent work—has passed a real test. If one condition fails, keep the old computer available as a fallback and resolve that specific compatibility gap instead of risking the whole workflow.
