How to switch NXTPAPER display modes and adjust screen settings on a TCL tablet

By Freedom251 Team · · 15 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a supported TCL NXTPAPER tablet, open the device’s NXTPAPER control or display settings, choose the mode you want, and then adjust the screen options that your model exposes. Depending on the tablet and its software, that may include brightness, adaptive brightness, eye comfort or color temperature, a darker display or dark theme, and screen timeout.

There is no single menu path that applies to every TCL tablet. Start by identifying the exact model and software version, then use that tablet’s manual and the labels shown on the device. TCL’s own overview says NXTPAPER features are product-specific, so an absent key, mode, or setting is not automatically a fault.

Identify your tablet before changing anything

Look in the tablet’s Settings app for About tablet, Device information, or a similarly named page. Record the model name—for example, NXTPAPER 11 or NXTPAPER 11 Gen 2—and the Android or TCL software version. Packaging, the rear label, and the original order record can also identify the model, but the on-device information is the best reference for installed software.

Use the manual written for that exact model. TCL’s support page for NXTPAPER 11 links to an English user manual; owners of that model should use it rather than instructions for another generation. A phone guide can show what TCL means by a setting, but it does not establish the navigation or controls on a tablet.

  • Do not assume that every TCL tablet has a physical NXTPAPER Key.
  • Do not assume that a mode shown in a TCL overview is installed on your model.
  • After a major software update, check the current labels again; menu names and locations can change.

Make a quick pre-change checklist

Before changing several options at once, note the current brightness, whether adaptive brightness is enabled, the current eye-comfort or color-temperature setting, the selected theme, and the timeout. This gives you a simple way to return to a familiar setup if the new combination is uncomfortable. If another person uses the tablet, record the settings they prefer as well.

Keep the tablet’s date, time, and time zone correct before creating a schedule for eye comfort. A schedule based on sunset or sunrise depends on that information. Also check whether a case, screen protector, or accessory is covering a physical key or the ambient-light sensor; an obstructed sensor can make automatic brightness appear inconsistent.

Ways a supported tablet can switch NXTPAPER modes

Use the on-screen NXTPAPER selector

Some tablets provide a mode selector in Settings, Display, NXTPAPER, or a similarly named section. The exact wording is model-dependent. Open the display-related settings, select the entry that mentions NXTPAPER or display mode, and choose one of the modes listed on your tablet. Apply or close the panel if the software presents a confirmation button, then view a familiar page to check the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Another model may expose the same selector from a quick-settings panel or an on-screen shortcut. Pull down the notification shade and look for an NXTPAPER tile only if your tablet provides one. If the tile is not present, use the full Settings app; do not add unrelated display tiles or install an app that claims to reproduce a hardware mode.

If you cannot find the item by browsing, use the Settings search field for “NXTPAPER,” “mode,” or “display.” Search results can point to a setting that is nested under a different heading, but the result still has to exist on your model. A downloaded launcher or a generic screen-filter app cannot prove that the tablet supports a built-in NXTPAPER mode.

Use an NXTPAPER Key, when fitted

TCL says its NXTPAPER Key can switch display modes on supported tablets and phones. On some tablet products, the key can also have additional customizable functions. Pressing or tapping it may open a selector, cycle through modes, or toggle an NXTPAPER function, but the action is not universal. Consult the exact tablet manual for the key’s gesture and for any option that changes what the key does.

A TCL quick guide for the T702D phone says, “Slide NXTPAPER switch up/down to turn NXTPAPER mode on/off.” That sentence describes a phone control, not a standard tablet procedure. The same guide lists Ink Paper, Color Paper, and Max Ink on that phone; it should not be used to conclude that a particular tablet has a switch or Max Ink mode.

Confirm the change

Open a page containing both text and color images. A mode change should be visible without restarting the tablet. If nothing changes, return to the selector and check whether the control is an enable/disable switch separate from the mode choice. If the control is missing altogether, follow the troubleshooting section below instead of repeatedly pressing a key that your model may not have.

Take a screenshot before and after if you are comparing subtle changes. The screenshot records the software output, not necessarily the way the panel looks to your eyes, but it can help you confirm that the selected mode changed and that an app did not simply reload its own theme.

What the main NXTPAPER modes are for

TCL documents three illustrative modes. The available list can differ by product, so treat the table as a description of TCL’s examples, not a promise about every tablet.

Note: Built-in storage only; microSD cards not supported
Mode How TCL describes the presentation Best fit What changes for color
Regular Vibrant, full-color clarity General tablet use, photos, video, games, and color-accurate work Retains the most conventional full-color appearance of the listed examples
Ink Paper Black ink on a white-paper presentation Black-and-white reading, long text, and documents where color is not important Color is reduced or removed in favor of a paper-like monochrome presentation
Color Paper Warm-toned display for magazines and comics Illustrated reading where a softer, warmer page is preferable Color remains, but the overall tone is warmer than Regular

Switching modes is a presentation choice, not a change to the underlying file. A color photograph remains a color photograph when you return to Regular. If a document looks too yellow or illustrations lose important detail, choose the mode that preserves the information you need rather than forcing a single setting for every activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare modes with the same page rather than with different apps. Read a text-heavy article, open a photograph with skin tones or a blue sky, and view a comic panel or magazine cover. Regular should be the reference for conventional color. Ink Paper is the useful comparison when you want to judge how a monochrome reading presentation handles text. Color Paper is the relevant comparison when retaining illustrations matters but you prefer a warmer page.

Do not treat mode names as guarantees of identical color output between generations. TCL uses the names to describe a family of NXTPAPER presentations, while the panel, software build, and available controls can vary. The list on your tablet is the authoritative list for that device.

Adjust brightness for the room and task

Manual brightness

Use the brightness slider in the quick-settings shade or in the tablet’s Display settings if your model provides it. Lower brightness in a dark room and raise it only enough to read comfortably in bright surroundings. A mode that looks appropriately muted at night may appear too dim outdoors.

Make the adjustment while looking at the content you actually use. A white web page, a document, and a video can make the same slider position appear different. If a mode change also changes perceived brightness, set the mode first and brightness second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing two modes, keep brightness fixed for the first comparison. Otherwise, you may mistake a brighter or dimmer slider position for a difference caused by the mode. After selecting the mode, make a second adjustment for the room and your comfort.

Adaptive or automatic brightness

Some TCL software includes adaptive brightness. When available, it uses the ambient-light sensor to change the screen level as the room changes. Turn it on if you move frequently between indoor and outdoor lighting; leave it off if you need a fixed level for consistent reading or testing. Adaptive brightness is optional, and its label and location are not established as universal across TCL tablets.

If adaptive brightness seems to jump unexpectedly, move the tablet away from a lamp or direct window glare and check whether a case or protector is covering the sensor. Give the setting a moment to respond after moving between rooms. If you prefer a fixed reading level, switch adaptive brightness off and use the slider manually.

Use eye-comfort and color-temperature controls when available

A tablet may offer Eye comfort, a blue-light filter, color temperature, or a comparable control. These settings generally make the display warmer or less blue. Open the relevant display setting, read the explanatory text shown by your model, and choose the intensity or schedule it provides. If there is a sunset-to-sunrise schedule, verify that the tablet’s date, time, and time zone are correct.

Eye comfort and NXTPAPER modes are separate controls unless your model explicitly combines them. Changing to Ink Paper does not prove that an eye-comfort filter is enabled, and enabling a warm filter does not guarantee a paper mode. Check each control independently and judge the result with the type of content you read.

Powered by Android 15 and TCL’s custom UI, it enhances productivity with features like screen mirroring, extended display, floating windows, and split-screen

Warmth can improve the appearance of a page for one reader and make color matching harder for another. For photo editing, design review, shopping images, or any task where color matters, compare the result with the comfort filter disabled or at a lower intensity. For evening reading, a scheduled or manually selected warmer setting may be preferable if your tablet offers it.

TCL states that NXTPAPER blue-light reduction can reach 3.41% in an internal laboratory test. That is a TCL performance claim, not a promise that every model or mode will produce the same result, and it is not evidence of a guaranteed health benefit. Use the controls for legibility and personal comfort, and seek professional advice for persistent symptoms.

Choose a darker appearance or dark theme

Some TCL phone software exposes both a darker display mode and a Dark theme. A tablet may use different names, combine them, or omit one of them. If your tablet lists a Dark theme, it normally changes supported apps and system surfaces; a darker display option may affect the visual treatment more broadly. Read the description on the device before enabling either option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dark appearance is not the same as Ink Paper. Ink Paper is TCL’s black-ink-on-white-paper example, while a dark theme generally puts dark surfaces behind light text. For ordinary reading, compare both with the app you use: an app can override the system theme, and scanned documents may remain bright regardless of the theme.

Enable a theme, then test the apps you actually use. Web pages, ebook readers, video players, and document viewers can each have their own appearance controls. If only the Settings app changes, the tablet may be using a system theme that the current app does not support; that does not indicate that the NXTPAPER mode failed.

Set the screen timeout deliberately

Sleep or screen timeout controls how long the display remains on after you stop interacting with it. TCL phone documentation lists a sleep-timeout setting, but the tablet label and path can differ. Select a short interval to conserve battery when the tablet is unattended, or a longer interval when following a recipe, sheet music, or technical instructions. Avoid choosing Never unless you understand the battery and privacy consequences.

Timeout is independent of NXTPAPER mode. Changing from Regular to Ink Paper should not require a different timeout, and changing the timeout should not alter the chosen mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A long timeout is useful only while you are actively following something. For shared or portable use, a shorter interval reduces the chance that an unlocked screen remains visible after you walk away. If your tablet offers a separate option to keep the screen on while charging, check that setting as well; it can make the display stay active even when the ordinary timeout is short.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Identify the model. Record the model name and software version from the tablet’s About section.
  2. Open the correct manual. Use the manual for that exact model, such as the English NXTPAPER 11 manual linked from TCL support when applicable.
  3. Find the mode control. Check the manual and the tablet’s NXTPAPER or Display settings for an on-screen selector, quick-settings tile, or NXTPAPER Key.
  4. Choose the mode. Start with Regular for mixed content, Ink Paper for black-and-white reading, or Color Paper for warm-toned magazines and comics when those choices are offered.
  5. Set brightness. Adjust the slider for the current room; enable adaptive brightness only if its automatic changes suit your use.
  6. Set comfort options. If available, configure eye comfort or color temperature and any schedule your tablet supports.
  7. Set appearance and timeout. Choose a dark theme or darker display only when it works with your apps, then select a practical sleep interval.
  8. Test real content. Check text, a color image, and a video or app you use often. Reopen the selector if one of them looks wrong.

Change one category at a time when troubleshooting. For example, select the mode first, test it, then adjust brightness, and only afterward add eye comfort or a dark theme. This makes it easier to identify which control caused an unexpected color shift or loss of detail.

Troubleshooting missing modes and controls

The NXTPAPER option is not listed

Confirm the model name first. TCL’s feature availability is product-specific, and a standard TCL tablet is not guaranteed to expose every NXTPAPER mode. Check for a separate NXTPAPER entry rather than searching only for Display mode. If the exact manual does not describe the feature, the tablet may not support it.

Check the software version and install only updates offered through the tablet’s normal update mechanism. Do not assume that a different tablet’s screenshots, a phone guide, or a third-party app can add a missing built-in mode. If the device was reset or set up under a different language, search for the equivalent display term in the language currently selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tablet has a key, but it does something else

Some tablet products allow additional NXTPAPER Key functions. Open the key or shortcut settings described in your manual and check whether its action was customized. Do not infer the correct gesture from the T702D phone guide.

If pressing the key opens another shortcut, record what it does before changing the assignment. The manual may describe a long press, a short press, or a swipe rather than a single tap. Restore the documented default if you want the key to control NXTPAPER again.

The mode changed but the screen still looks similar

Test with black text, a white page, and a colorful image. A warm Color Paper result can be subtle, while Ink Paper should be more obvious on color content. Check brightness and eye-comfort settings because a strong warm filter or very low brightness can mask the difference between modes.

Some apps draw their own pages or apply their own color settings. Try the same comparison in Settings or a basic web page before deciding that the system selector did nothing. If the change remains absent across several apps, check that you selected a mode rather than merely opening a preview or turning a separate NXTPAPER switch off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The navigation buttons disappear

TCL’s support material phrases a related issue as “What should I do if the navigation buttons disappear from my screen?” If navigation controls vanish after changing display settings, follow the exact recovery steps in your tablet’s manual or TCL support instructions for that model. The cause may be a navigation-mode or full-screen setting rather than the NXTPAPER mode itself.

The setting disappeared after an update

Recheck the model and software version, then search the current Settings app for NXTPAPER, Display, brightness, eye comfort, dark theme, and timeout. Updates can rename or relocate controls. If the manual and the updated interface disagree, use TCL support for the tablet’s current software rather than applying steps from an older phone guide.

A schedule runs at the wrong time

Verify the tablet’s automatic date, time, time zone, and location-related settings if the schedule uses sunrise or sunset. A manually chosen schedule may be listed under eye comfort, night display, or a similar name. If the setting is not available on your model, use manual activation instead of assuming the schedule is hidden elsewhere.

What TCL’s technology claims do—and do not—tell you

TCL reports 106 patents, 10 certifications, and 143 awards for NXTPAPER, accurate as of July 2025 and based on TCL’s internal statistics. TCL also states that blue-light reduction can reach 3.41% in an internal laboratory test. Those figures describe TCL’s reported technology and testing; they do not establish that a particular tablet mode will produce a health outcome, and actual performance can vary with usage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the mode that makes your own content comfortable and legible. If you have persistent eyestrain, headaches, or other symptoms, changing a display mode is not a substitute for professional advice.

Which setup should you use?

  • Mixed daytime use: Regular mode, brightness matched to the room, and adaptive brightness if frequent light changes make manual adjustment inconvenient.
  • Long black-and-white reading: Ink Paper when offered, with brightness high enough for clear text and eye comfort scheduled if you prefer a warmer display.
  • Magazines and comics: Color Paper when available, because TCL describes it as warm-toned while retaining color.
  • Photos, video, and games: Regular mode unless a warmer or reduced-color presentation is specifically wanted.
  • Bedside use: A low manual brightness or the tablet’s available eye-comfort setting, plus a short timeout and a dark theme if supported by the apps you use.

The reliable rule is simple: select the mode and controls your exact tablet documents, then verify the result with your own content. TCL’s NXTPAPER names describe a family of display features, not one identical interface across every tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every TCL tablet have an NXTPAPER Key?

No. TCL says the key is available on supported tablets and phones, and some tablet products give it additional customizable functions. Check the exact model manual and the hardware on your tablet rather than assuming a key exists.

Which NXTPAPER mode is best for reading?

For black-and-white text, Ink Paper is TCL’s example intended for a black-ink-on-white-paper presentation. For magazines and comics, Color Paper is described as warm-toned while retaining color. The modes offered on your particular tablet may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Ink Paper and Eye comfort together?

They are separate controls unless your tablet explicitly combines them. Select the NXTPAPER mode, then check the Eye comfort or color-temperature setting independently. A warm filter can make the result look different from Ink Paper alone.

Why is my tablet missing Color Paper or another mode?

TCL states that NXTPAPER features are product-specific. Confirm the model and software version, consult that model’s manual, and check the current NXTPAPER or Display settings. A missing mode may mean the tablet does not support it, not that it is defective.

Is the T702D phone switch instruction valid for a TCL tablet?

No. The T702D quick guide says, “Slide NXTPAPER switch up/down to turn NXTPAPER mode on/off,” but that is a phone instruction. It does not establish the control or gesture used by any tablet.

Why does a mode change seem invisible?

Test a white page with black text and a colorful image, and check that brightness or Eye comfort has not masked the difference. Also test a basic system page because an app may apply its own theme or color treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will changing the mode change my photos or documents?

No. It changes how the tablet presents the content; it does not change the underlying file. Return to Regular to view a color photograph in the conventional full-color presentation.

What should I do if navigation buttons disappear?

Use the recovery instructions for your exact tablet in its manual or TCL support. The issue may involve navigation mode or a full-screen setting rather than NXTPAPER itself.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact TCL tablet and software version first. Then use its documented NXTPAPER selector or NXTPAPER Key, choose the mode that fits your content, and adjust brightness, eye comfort, appearance, and timeout only where those controls are available. TCL’s mode names and key behavior are not universal, so the device manual and the settings shown on your tablet are the final authority.
