A mutual-fund switch can trigger a tax calculation and an exit load even when you never receive cash in your bank account. For an ordinary investor-initiated switch, the source scheme generally treats the switch-out as a redemption and the destination scheme treats the switch-in as a purchase. Before submitting the request, identify the units and purchase lots that will be redeemed, check the source scheme’s current load terms, and estimate tax using the correct fund category and transfer date.
What a mutual-fund switch does to your money
“Switch” can describe several different actions: moving from one scheme to another, changing from a Regular plan to a Direct plan, changing an option within a scheme, or having units moved as part of a statutory scheme consolidation. Those actions may have different processing and load terms, so first identify what you are actually asking the fund house to do.

An ordinary switch is usually a redemption followed by a purchase
For an investor-initiated switch, the operational mechanism described in the scheme disclosure reviewed is a switch-out from the source scheme, processed as a redemption, followed by a switch-in to the destination scheme, processed as a purchase. The destination purchase is subject to that scheme’s applicable issue rules. One scheme document states: “Valid applications for ‘switch-out’ shall be treated as applications for redemption and valid applications for ‘switch-in’ shall be treated as applications for Purchase.” That is the wording of that scheme document, not a guarantee that every scheme handles every switch identically. Check the current Scheme Information Document (SID), transaction confirmation and applicable dealing terms for your own transaction.

The practical consequence is that the source units are disposed of for tax purposes in the ordinary switch mechanism, even if the proceeds are directed straight into another scheme rather than paid to your bank. SEBI’s standardized investor communication likewise warns that redemption or switch-out may entail capital gain or loss for the unitholder. The Income Tax Department says gains from transfer are generally taxable in the year of transfer, subject to statutory exceptions.

Do not confuse an investor choice with a statutory consolidation
Section 47 of the Income Tax Act identifies particular transactions that are not regarded as transfers, including certain qualifying consolidations of mutual-fund schemes or plans. These are narrow legal exceptions. They do not establish that an investor can choose to switch between schemes or plans and automatically receive the same treatment. If the fund house is consolidating schemes or plans, confirm the precise transaction and its statutory treatment from the official notice and a qualified tax adviser; do not assume the rules for a voluntary switch apply, or vice versa.
Check the source scheme’s exit load before you switch
An exit load is not a universal mutual-fund charge with one standard rate. It depends on the source scheme’s current terms and can vary by scheme, transaction type, holding period, units or value, and any free or exempt portion described in the scheme documents. An exit load is associated with the units leaving the source scheme; do not assume the destination scheme’s load schedule answers what will be charged on the switch-out.
Find the applicable schedule and read its conditions
- Open the current source scheme SID or official scheme disclosure. Find the exit-load section and check that it applies to the exact scheme and plan from which you are switching. A past factsheet, an old account statement or another scheme’s schedule may not reflect the current terms.
- Check the relevant dates and units. Identify the schedule’s holding-period window and how it treats purchases made on different dates. Mutual-fund accounts can contain multiple purchase lots; one portion may fall within a load period while another does not.
- Read the calculation base and exceptions. Establish whether the stated load is calculated on units, value or another stated base, and whether the schedule provides a free or exempt portion. Check any separate rules for a switch between plans or options.
- Confirm the result in the transaction details. Before authorizing the request, use the fund house or registrar and transfer agent (RTA) transaction information to verify the units, applicable NAV and load shown for your actual transaction.
AMFI explains the basic redemption-price arithmetic as applicable NAV multiplied by one minus the applicable exit-load rate. Its illustration uses a ₹10 NAV and a 2% load: the resulting redemption price is ₹9.80. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a typical rate, a recommended rate or a rate that applies to your scheme. AMFI-hosted standardized scheme observations also state that exit loads can apply to redemptions, including switch-outs, and direct investors to check the prevailing scheme-specific load structure. Do not transfer one fund house’s conditions to another fund.

How the load affects the proceeds
In a simple illustration, if the applicable NAV is ₹10 and the applicable load is 2%, the redemption price under AMFI’s formula is ₹9.80 per unit. The actual amount available for the destination purchase depends on the transaction’s units, NAV, scheme terms and any other applicable processing rules. A load reduces what is available from the switch-out; it does not make the switch tax-free. Keep the transaction confirmation that shows the actual debit and proceeds rather than relying only on an estimate.
Work out which purchase lots are being redeemed
A switch may redeem units acquired on different dates and at different costs. The holding period and resulting gain or loss can therefore differ across lots in the same folio. Do not estimate tax from the current account value alone or treat the entire position as if it had one purchase date.
Build a lot-level record
- Collect the transaction history. Obtain the AMC or RTA statement and identify each purchase or credit, its date, units and cost basis. Include relevant switches, reinvested distributions or other transactions shown in the records.
- Estimate the units that will leave. Check the requested switch amount or units and how the source scheme will process it. A request for a rupee amount can translate into a number of units based on the applicable transaction mechanics.
- Match debits to credits using FIFO. The Income Tax Department’s mutual-fund transaction reporting instructions use first in, first out (FIFO) to match a debit with corresponding credits and determine the holding period. Apply the relevant transaction records and FIFO matching rather than choosing whichever lot gives the most convenient tax result.
- Record the transfer date and proceeds for the matched units. Use the transaction confirmation and final statement to capture the actual date, units, NAV and exit-load calculation. An estimate made before the request may differ from the confirmed transaction.
- Calculate each lot separately before combining results. Determine the gain or loss using the records for the units matched to the debit and the applicable tax category and dates. Keep the lot-level working papers so that any total can be explained and reconciled.
FIFO is important because it links the units redeemed to earlier credits; it is not a substitute for identifying each purchase’s cost and date. If your records show a transfer or correction that makes the matching unclear, ask the AMC or RTA for the transaction history and have a tax professional check the treatment rather than guessing.

Apply the tax rules for the fund and transfer date
There is no single capital-gains rate for every mutual fund. The applicable result depends on the fund’s legal tax classification, the holding period of the redeemed units, the date of transfer, required securities transaction tax (STT) conditions, and the taxpayer’s circumstances. The Income Tax Department’s equity-oriented-fund rates below apply only when the relevant statutory conditions are met; they must not be applied automatically to debt, hybrid or other schemes.
| Qualifying transaction | Income Tax Department guidance | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term capital gain under section 111A on qualifying equity-oriented-fund units transferred before 23 July 2024 | 15% | Applies only when section 111A conditions, including the relevant STT conditions, are met. The rate is tied to the transfer date. |
| Short-term capital gain under section 111A on qualifying equity-oriented-fund units transferred on or after 23 July 2024 | 20% | Applies only when section 111A conditions, including the relevant STT conditions, are met. The rate is tied to the transfer date. |
| Long-term capital gain under section 112A on qualifying equity-oriented-fund units transferred on or after 23 July 2024 | 12.5% on qualifying gains above the aggregate ₹1,25,000 threshold | The threshold is aggregate, not a separate allowance for each scheme or switch, and section 112A conditions must be met. |
These are date-specific rates and threshold figures from Income Tax Department guidance accessed in 2026, not a complete calculation of an individual’s final liability. The treatment of a particular switch depends on the actual fund category and whether all statutory conditions apply. Verify the current law and your own circumstances when filing.
Do not substitute a scheme label for tax classification
A scheme name or marketing category is not enough to establish its tax treatment. Check the fund’s legal classification for the relevant tax rule and the period in which the units were held. For a hybrid or other scheme, do not infer equity-oriented status from a broad description, a past portfolio allocation or the fact that it holds some shares. If classification is uncertain, confirm it with current official fund documents and a tax adviser before estimating the switch’s effect.

How to think about exit load and taxable gain
A common practical question is whether exit load is deducted before calculating short-term capital-gains tax. AMFI’s published formula establishes that an applicable load reduces the redemption price: redemption price is the applicable NAV multiplied by one minus the load rate. Tax, however, requires a calculation of the gain or loss on the units transferred, using the correct proceeds, cost basis, category and holding period. The cited official material does not set out a universal rule for every reporting system’s presentation of exit load in that calculation. Therefore, do not simply multiply the gross NAV by units and assume that is the final tax consideration, or assume that an estimated net amount in a statement settles the tax result. Reconcile the confirmed proceeds and load against the mutual-fund transaction summary and the figures used in the return; where the treatment is not clear, have a qualified Indian tax professional review it.

A switch should answer an investment or service need, not merely move money because a different scheme is in the news. Before authorizing it, compare the likely tax and source exit load with the reason you want to move. The amount of a charge or tax is only one part of the decision: the destination scheme’s objective, asset allocation, risk and costs must also suit the purpose for which the money is invested.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a before-you-submit checklist
- Objective: Is the proposed scheme meant to correct an asset-allocation mismatch, change risk exposure, reduce costs, or address a service issue? State the reason in terms you can evaluate.
- Source transaction: Is this a scheme-to-scheme switch, a Regular-to-Direct plan change, an option change, or a fund-house consolidation? Verify the processing and tax treatment for that exact event.
- Units and lots: Which units are expected to be debited, what dates and costs attach to them, and has FIFO matching been considered?
- Exit load: What does the current source SID say for those lots and this transaction? Is a portion exempt, and is the load calculated on the basis you assumed?
- Tax category and date: What is the fund’s legal tax category, what is each lot’s holding period, and which transfer-date rules apply? Are STT or other statutory conditions relevant?
- Destination: Does the destination’s investment objective, asset allocation, risk and cost profile fit the intended role? A switch is not automatically beneficial because it changes a plan or scheme.
- Operational details: Are folio, scheme, plan, option, amount or units and transaction instructions correct? Read the request and confirmation carefully before relying on an estimate.
There is no universally best answer to whether a switch is worthwhile. The result depends on its purpose, the particular lots and load schedule, tax treatment, investment risks and costs, and the investor’s circumstances. If the financial and tax effects are difficult to quantify, pause the request until you can get individualized advice; standardized investor communication from SEBI also cautions that such decisions may require advice suited to the unitholder.

Keep records and check tax reporting
After the switch, retain the source and destination scheme names, folio details, lot history, request and confirmation, applicable NAVs, exit-load calculation, and the statements used to establish cost basis. These records let you explain how the redeemed units were matched and how you estimated the proceeds and gain or loss. Save the final documents rather than relying on a screenshot of a pre-submission estimate.
Reconcile transaction summaries and pre-filled information
The Income Tax Department describes mutual-fund transaction summaries as inputs used to pre-fill capital gains, income or loss information. Its filing guidance describes estimated consideration and acquisition figures and allows taxpayers to modify those estimates before filing. Treat a transaction summary, AIS entry or pre-filled amount as a starting point for review, not as an unchangeable final tax computation.
- Compare the reported transaction with the AMC or RTA statement and the switch confirmation.
- Check that the source scheme, transaction date, units and proceeds correspond to the actual switch-out.
- Reconcile acquisition details and FIFO lot matching against your purchase records.
- Review the exit-load amount and how it appears in the transaction data and return calculation.
- Correct estimated figures where needed before filing, retaining the records that support the change.
If the available reporting does not clearly reconcile with the transaction confirmation, do not silently accept or discard the figure. Ask the AMC or RTA about the transaction data and consult a tax professional if the resulting tax treatment remains uncertain.

Final check before sending the request
Do not submit a switch until you can answer four questions from records rather than assumptions: what exact transaction is being processed, which source units and lots will be redeemed, what current exit-load terms apply, and how those units will be classified and reported for tax. Then compare the resulting cost with the investment reason for moving and retain the confirmation for your return. A switch can be operationally convenient, but the absence of a cash payout does not by itself remove its redemption, load or tax consequences.
