Open ChatGPT’s model picker, then choose one of the models or reasoning levels shown for your account. That picker—not an old screenshot or a universal online list—is the authoritative view of what you can use today. The choices can differ by plan, rollout status, workspace permissions, model limits, and whether an option is current or legacy.
This guide explains the selection process, why a model may be missing, what happens when you reach a usage limit, and how Enterprise and Edu administrators handle legacy access.

Switching models in ChatGPT
Model selection happens inside the ChatGPT conversation interface. The exact arrangement can change between accounts, but the process is consistent: open the model picker, review the options currently enabled for your account, and select the model or thinking level you want to use.

- Open ChatGPT and enter the conversation where you want to work. Use the account and workspace whose entitlements you want to check.
- Open the model picker. It is the control that displays the current model or a generic selection such as Latest. If you do not see a picker, the account or workspace may not expose multiple choices.
- Review the available entries. Read the labels shown in your own picker rather than relying on a list copied from another account. Availability can change during a rollout.
- Select a model or reasoning level. The new choice applies to the conversation according to the behavior shown by ChatGPT. Some accounts expose named models; others expose a speed or reasoning selector.
- Send a message and verify the active choice. If the picker changes back, an option disappears, or a limit notice appears, follow the explanation displayed by ChatGPT instead of repeatedly switching.
Eligible users may see GPT-6 in place of the generic Latest selection. Choosing an explicit GPT-5.6 Sol entry keeps the conversation on GPT-5.6 rather than the generic Latest route. These labels are account-dependent, so their presence is not a promise that every user will see them.

Reasoning levels: Instant, Medium, High, Extra High and Pro
Some accounts present reasoning as levels instead of—or in addition to—named models. The current guidance describes Instant, Medium, High, Extra High and Pro. In practical terms, the choice is a trade-off between response speed and the amount of reasoning work requested. A faster level is generally more suitable for straightforward questions; a deeper level is intended for difficult analysis, planning or multi-step problems.
Do not assume that every level is available on every plan. Eligibility varies, and the picker is the reliable way to determine which levels your account can use. Free and Go users do not receive the same GPT-5.6 Sol options as eligible paid plans, although the current guide says Free and Go users can use Think for harder questions. The name, placement and availability of a thinking control can vary with the account interface.

The labels should not be treated as a permanent product taxonomy. If a level is absent, that absence is meaningful for your account at that moment; it is not evidence that the control is broken.
Why a model is missing
A missing model usually has one of four explanations: your plan does not include it, the feature is still rolling out, a workspace administrator has restricted it, or the model is no longer available. Check these causes in that order before reinstalling an app or changing unrelated settings.
Plan eligibility
ChatGPT does not expose identical model choices to every plan. Free and Go accounts, eligible paid accounts, Enterprise workspaces and Edu workspaces can have different selections. A model listed in a help article or shown in another person’s account may therefore be unavailable to you without anything being wrong.

Plan eligibility can also affect reasoning levels rather than only model names. For example, the current guidance distinguishes the GPT-5.6 Sol options available to eligible paid plans from the options offered to Free and Go users. Use the controls that actually appear after you sign in, and confirm that you are in the intended account before concluding that access is missing.
Staged rollout
New models and controls can be introduced gradually. During a rollout, two otherwise similar accounts may show different entries. A model can be documented publicly while still not being enabled for every user. In that situation, waiting for the rollout is the appropriate action; repeatedly switching interfaces cannot force an unenabled feature to appear.
Workspace permissions
Managed workspaces can limit the models members may use. An administrator can configure which choices are exposed, so a personal account may show an option that is hidden inside a company or school workspace. Switch to the correct workspace and inspect its settings before treating the difference as a product defect.
Retirement or replacement
A model that has been retired no longer appears in the picker. Existing conversations may be moved to a newer supported model. Retirement is different from a temporary usage limit: waiting for a reset will not restore a model that has been removed from service.
Use the picker as the account-specific source of truth
Availability and limits change over time. The official business guidance specifically directs users to check the model picker for the options on their account and the current rate card for flexible-pricing usage. For normal ChatGPT use, the picker is more authoritative than an old article, a saved screenshot, a social-media post or a list maintained by someone with a different plan.

When checking availability, record the context that can change the result:
- The account and subscription plan currently signed in.
- The personal, team, Enterprise or Edu workspace selected.
- The model or reasoning label displayed before sending a message.
- Any notice saying that access is rolling out, restricted or temporarily unavailable.
- The limit or reset time shown after usage is consumed.
This small checklist prevents a common mistake: comparing a personal account with a managed workspace and assuming one of them must be malfunctioning.
What happens when you reach a usage limit
Allowances depend on both the plan and the model. ChatGPT can show a reset time when one is available. If you reach a model’s allowance, the service may continue the conversation with another available model rather than stopping completely. The fallback behavior and the wording of the notice are determined by the account and the limit involved.
A model switch is not a guaranteed way to obtain more usage. Models can share an allowance, so moving between them may leave the same quota unchanged. If the interface shows a reset time, waiting until that time is the dependable way to regain the affected allowance. Do not interpret a successful switch as proof that the original model’s quota has been extended.
How to respond to a limit notice
- Read the notice completely. Identify whether it names a model, a shared allowance, a fallback model or a reset time.
- Check the active picker. Select another option only if it is shown as available and the task can tolerate its different behavior.
- Expect a fallback when ChatGPT announces one. Responses produced after the fallback may differ in speed, reasoning depth or capability from earlier responses.
- Use the displayed reset. If no reset time is shown, do not invent one; availability may depend on a rolling allowance or another account rule.
- Recheck the picker later. The option should return only when the account’s allowance and availability rules permit it.
For important work, note which model or level was active before a limit was reached. This makes it easier to explain why later responses may look different and to resume with the intended option after access returns.

Legacy models in Enterprise and Edu
Legacy access is a conditional workspace feature, not a permanent archive of every past model. In Enterprise and Edu, an administrator can enable legacy access in the workspace settings. A member can then see a legacy model only while two conditions remain true: legacy access is enabled and the model itself is still available.
OpenAI’s official legacy-access guidance states: “A legacy model appears in the picker only while it remains available and legacy model access is enabled.” If either condition stops being true, the entry can disappear. Enabling the setting does not restore a model that has been retired.
Administrator checklist
- Open the Enterprise or Edu workspace administration settings.
- Locate the control for legacy model access.
- Enable it only when members need a still-supported legacy model.
- Have a member reopen the model picker in that workspace.
- Confirm that the requested legacy model is still listed; if it is not, the model may have been retired or the workspace may not have access to it.
Members who cannot change the setting should contact their workspace administrator. Changing a personal ChatGPT preference cannot override an administrator’s workspace policy.

Legacy access in ChatGPT should not be confused with API access. The legacy documentation treats API availability as a separate matter, managed independently from the ChatGPT workspace picker.

Use this sequence to separate an account issue from an entitlement or rollout decision.
- Confirm the signed-in account. Sign out or inspect the account switcher if you may be using a different login than the one associated with the expected plan.
- Confirm the selected workspace. A managed workspace can have a narrower model policy than a personal workspace.
- Open the picker again. Look for the exact model or reasoning label, including whether it is under a submenu or a thinking control.
- Read any eligibility or rollout message. A notice that access is not yet enabled calls for waiting, not repeated configuration changes.
- Check for a usage limit. A limit notice or reset time indicates temporary allowance behavior rather than missing entitlement.
- Ask the administrator for policy confirmation. This applies to Enterprise and Edu accounts where members cannot change model permissions.
- Consider retirement. If the model disappeared for everyone in the workspace and no reset is shown, it may no longer be supported.
Do not use an old screenshot as a diagnostic target. Interface labels and available choices can change while the account remains healthy.
Choosing a model or reasoning level for a task
Selection is most useful when it follows the task rather than a permanent preference. Start with the fastest suitable option for routine drafting, extraction or simple questions. Move to a deeper reasoning level when the task involves several constraints, difficult analysis, long planning or a high cost of error. If a limit or fallback occurs, reassess whether the task can continue with the available option or should wait for the reset.
- Routine work: Choose an Instant-style option when speed matters more than extended reasoning.
- Balanced work: Choose Medium when you want a compromise between latency and depth and the account offers it.
- Complex work: Choose High or Extra High when those levels are available and the problem benefits from additional reasoning.
- Hard questions on eligible Free or Go accounts: Use Think if it appears in the interface.
- Workspace-controlled work: Use only the models approved by the organization, even if another account offers more choices.
There is no universally best model picker choice. The right option depends on the task, your current allowance and the controls applied to the account.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming one universal model list exists. Plan, rollout and workspace differences make account-specific inspection necessary.
- Confusing a limit with a missing entitlement. A reset notice indicates allowance behavior; a permanently absent retired model will not return after a reset.
- Expecting a switch to bypass a shared quota. Changing models does not necessarily increase an allowance when models draw from the same limit.
- Expecting a member to override workspace policy. Enterprise and Edu administrators control legacy access and may restrict current models.
- Equating ChatGPT access with API access. The two availability systems are managed separately.
- Relying on a dated guide. Availability and limits change, so the picker and current workspace settings matter more than a static list.
How to document a model change for team work
When consistency matters, record the model or reasoning label shown in the picker, the workspace used, and the date of the conversation. Also note whether a fallback message appeared. This does not lock the model in place, but it gives teammates the context needed to interpret different results when availability or limits change.
For a managed team, administrators should communicate which choices are approved and whether legacy access is enabled. Members should know who to contact when a model disappears, a rollout has not reached the workspace, or a limit interrupts a task.
Bottom line
Switch models through the ChatGPT model picker and select only an option displayed for your account. A missing model can reflect plan eligibility, a staged rollout, workspace permissions or retirement. Usage limits may trigger a fallback or require waiting for the displayed reset, and switching is not a reliable way to evade a shared allowance. In Enterprise and Edu, legacy access depends on administrator approval and the model remaining supported. Because these conditions change, your own picker and workspace settings are the definitive current check.
