How to Switch Mobile Providers and Keep Your Phone Number

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the number transfer with your new mobile provider while your existing service is still active. The new provider submits the port request; cancelling the old line first can make the number unavailable for transfer. Once the port completes, test calls, texts and data before closing any lines you do not intend to keep.

The exact codes, deadlines, documents and outage risks depend on the country. The United Kingdom has a defined text-message process, while Canada and the United States use provider-led procedures. Follow the section for your market rather than assuming that a PAC, one-minute response or one-working-day deadline applies everywhere.

What number portability actually does

Changing providers and keeping a telephone number are two linked but separate actions. Opening a new account gives you service; a port or transfer request moves your existing number to that account. Cancelling first normally ends the number-transfer opportunity, so the incoming provider should be told explicitly that you want to retain your number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the old account usable until the transfer has started or completed under your local process. A port does not automatically settle every other line, device instalment or balance on the old account. After the number works on the new service, review the old account and close only the lines you no longer need.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Before you request a transfer

Confirm the market and the incoming provider

Number-transfer rules are national and can also vary by provider, account type and handset. Check that the prospective provider serves the places where you live and work, supports your phone model, and accepts the number type you are moving. Compare coverage, total monthly cost, planned price changes, contract length, device payments, exit charges, transfer requirements and customer support during an interruption.

Ask the new provider whether it will issue a physical SIM, activate an eSIM, or support both. An existing phone may need a replacement SIM supplied by the new provider, but a generic SIM is not itself a porting tool and is not universally compatible.

Check the old contract and money still owed

  • Find the minimum-term end date and any notice or early-termination charge.
  • Separate service charges from device-finance or handset instalments; moving the number may not cancel the device obligation.
  • Check whether an account balance, credit, promotional condition or remaining line must be settled.
  • Keep records of the account number, billing address and support contacts in case the new provider needs them.

In the UK, text INFO to 85075 to ask whether the contract is in or out of contract. If it is still in term, an early-termination charge may apply. The switching response also contains relevant charge or pay-as-you-go credit information.

Protect information that may be reset

Save contacts, important text messages and voicemail before the move if the provider warns that they can be reset. T-Mobile specifically advises this preparation and says its voicemail is reset after port completion. Other providers may handle stored messages differently, so ask before relying on the old mailbox.

Check the handset separately from the number

A successful port proves that the number moved; it does not prove that the handset is unlocked or accepted on the new network. Confirm unlock status, supported radio bands, eSIM capability and the incoming provider’s device-eligibility rules before the transfer date.

  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

United Kingdom: the Ofcom process

Ofcom’s UK consumer guide, updated 25 August 2026, gives mobile customers a standard text process. The current provider must reply with the switching code within one minute. The code remains valid for 30 days, and the new provider must complete the switch within one working day after receiving it.

Get a PAC when you are keeping the number

  1. From the mobile number you want to move, text PAC to 65075.
  2. Read the reply, including any stated early-termination charge, credit or other account information.
  3. Give the PAC to the new provider through its sign-up or support process. Do not send it to an unrelated service.
  4. Follow the new provider’s instructions for activating its SIM or eSIM and for choosing the transfer date.

Ofcom’s exact consumer wording is: Your current provider must reply with your switching code, called a ‘PAC’ or ‘STAC’, within one minute. The quote comes from its UK switching guide, last updated 25 August 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a STAC only when you are not keeping the number

If you are leaving the provider without transferring the existing number, text STAC to 75075. A STAC ends the old service rather than moving its number, so it is the wrong code for a number-preserving switch.

Know the UK timing and service-loss limit

The incoming provider must complete a PAC switch within one working day. Ofcom says any loss of service must not last longer than one working day, and providers may have to compensate customers when the switch is delayed or service is unavailable beyond the permitted period. A working day is not the same as a calendar day, so check the appointment or confirmation supplied by the new provider.

Special cases in the UK

  • If several numbers sit on one account, the text route may not handle all of them; contact the current provider using its instructed method.
  • If you already cancelled, Ofcom says that in most cases you can still request a PAC from the old provider and give it to the new provider within one month. This recovery route is a UK rule, not a worldwide guarantee.
  • A SIM-only customer using the same handset may need to replace the old SIM with the one sent by the new provider. Whether a physical SIM is needed depends on the offer and eSIM support.

Finish the UK move

  1. When the new provider confirms completion, place an outgoing call and make an incoming call.
  2. Send and receive a text message, then test mobile data with Wi-Fi disabled.
  3. Check voicemail, two-factor authentication messages and any services that use the number for account recovery.
  4. Review the final bill from the former provider and resolve any device balance or legitimate early-termination charge.

UK providers cannot charge for a notice period that runs after the switch date, but that does not remove an early-termination charge where the minimum contract has not ended.

Canada: ask the new provider to transfer the service

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) tells customers to ask the new provider to transfer the service and to state clearly that they want to keep the number. Its consumer guidance, modified 6 July 2022, says: Most importantly, do not cancel your service before you switch to the new provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Canadian steps

  1. Choose the new provider and tell its representative that you are porting an existing mobile number.
  2. Provide the account and identity details requested by the new provider; requirements differ by carrier.
  3. Leave the current service active until the transfer begins. A previously cancelled service with no initiated transfer will require a new number.
  4. Keep the phone available for confirmation messages and follow any authorization prompt from the current provider.
  5. Test voice, text and data after the new provider reports completion.

The CRTC says a mobile transfer can take a few hours and that service interruption can occur while it is underway. A temporary interruption can affect 9-1-1 service, so avoid starting a transfer when you may need emergency calling and follow the providers’ safety instructions.

Canadian contract costs

Cancellation fees and outstanding amounts may apply. The CRTC’s caps and calculation rules depend on the contract type and whether a device subsidy is involved; they cannot be converted into a universal dollar figure for every customer. Ask the current provider for the exact amount before authorizing the move.

United States example: T-Mobile’s published wireless-transfer procedure

US carriers set their own porting workflow. T-Mobile’s support instructions are a carrier-specific example, not a national rule. For a wireless-to-T-Mobile transfer, the customer is asked to check eligibility and prepare:

  • the mobile number being moved;
  • the current provider’s name;
  • the current account number;
  • the billing address and ZIP code on that account;
  • the transfer PIN or account password required by the current provider;
  • confirmation that a port block is not preventing the move; and
  • confirmation that the handset is unlocked when an unlocked device is required.

T-Mobile estimates that an incoming wireless transfer typically takes 10 minutes to 3 hours when the submitted details are accurate. It also warns that dual service can continue for up to 24 hours during the transition and that 911 may not be able to call the customer back during that period. Those estimates and warnings describe T-Mobile’s process and should not be treated as a promise for another US carrier.

US preparation and completion

  1. Leave the old account active and obtain the exact account and transfer credentials from that provider.
  2. Submit the transfer through the incoming carrier’s online account, store or support channel.
  3. Keep both SIMs or the eSIM activation information available until the carrier confirms which line is active.
  4. Back up contacts, voicemail and texts before the port if the provider says they may reset.
  5. Test calls, texts, data and voicemail once the number displays on the new service.
  6. Cancel any old lines that were not part of the port and inspect the final bill. A ported number does not automatically close every line on a multi-line account.

How SIMs, eSIMs and unlocked phones fit into the switch

The number is held by the carrier account and moved through a port request; the SIM or eSIM is the credential that lets the handset use the new network. You may therefore need both a successful port and a correctly activated SIM profile.

When a replacement SIM makes sense

On a UK SIM-only switch, the incoming provider may send a physical replacement SIM for an existing handset. Use the supplied SIM only after checking that the new provider has associated it with the port. Buying a random SIM before choosing the provider can leave you with an incompatible product and no transfer capability.

When eSIM is an option

If the phone and plan support eSIM, the provider may deliver an activation code instead of plastic. Ask whether the eSIM can be downloaded before the port, whether the old profile should remain installed temporarily, and how to recover if activation fails. Do not erase the working profile until you know which line the provider wants you to use.

Unlock and compatibility checks

Ask the incoming provider to verify the handset’s IMEI or model and network compatibility. A phone can be unlocked yet lack required bands, or be technically compatible but blocked by an unpaid balance. Resolve those issues before scheduling the port.

Timing, interruptions and common failure points

Market or example Published timing Important qualification
United Kingdom Code response within one minute; code valid for 30 days; switch within one working day Ofcom consumer process; service loss should not exceed one working day
Canada Mobile transfer can take a few hours CRTC guidance; interruption, including temporary 9-1-1 impact, can occur
US, T-Mobile wireless transfer Typically 10 minutes to 3 hours Carrier estimate depends on accurate account details; dual service may last up to 24 hours

If the transfer is delayed

  • Check that the account number, billing address, ZIP code and transfer PIN match the old provider’s records exactly.
  • Ask the incoming provider whether the old carrier rejected the request, whether a port block is active, or whether an authorization message is waiting.
  • Keep the old service active while the case is investigated.
  • Request a new completion estimate and ask whether the original PAC or transfer authorization has expired.

If calls work but texts or data do not

Restart the phone, confirm that the new SIM or eSIM is selected for mobile data, and check the provider’s activation instructions. If only incoming calls fail, the port may still be propagating; report the symptom to the new provider rather than cancelling the old account. Check voicemail and two-factor authentication separately because those services can update on a different schedule.

If the phone shows no service

Verify that the SIM is active, the handset is unlocked and the device is compatible. Keep the old SIM available if the provider asks you to switch profiles temporarily. Do not factory-reset the phone until the carrier has ruled out an account or network-side issue.

Fees, cancellation and the final bill

Porting a number and ending a contract are different financial events. A provider can complete the port while you still owe a device instalment or an early-termination amount. Ask for a written estimate of every charge before committing, and compare it with the remaining monthly payments.

In the UK, the PAC response communicates relevant charges or pay-as-you-go credit, and a provider cannot bill a notice period that runs after the switch date. An early-termination charge can still apply during a minimum term. In Canada, cancellation and outstanding fees depend on the contract and device-subsidy rules. In the United States, the exact amount depends on the carrier agreement and any financed handset or promotional credit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After testing the new line, confirm which old lines have closed, return equipment if required, and save the final bill. Do not assume that moving one number closes a family plan, tablet line or watch line.

A practical comparison checklist before choosing the new provider

Decision area Questions to answer
Coverage Does the network work at home, work, school and regular travel locations?
Total price What is the recurring cost after introductory pricing, taxes, fees and planned increases?
Contract and device What term, device instalments, unlock conditions and exit charges apply?
Porting Which credentials are required, how is authorization given, and what completion window is quoted?
SIM choice Will the provider send a physical SIM, support eSIM, or require a particular handset?
Support How can you reach a specialist if calls, texts or emergency service are interrupted?

Official guidance establishes why these questions matter, but it does not rank carriers or test coverage. Verify the answers for your address, plan and handset before submitting the port.

If you have already cancelled the old service

Do not assume the number is permanently lost. In the UK, Ofcom says that in most cases a customer can request a PAC from the former provider within one month of cancellation and give it to the new provider. Contact the former provider promptly and ask whether the number remains recoverable. Canadian and US recovery windows are provider-specific, so ask both carriers before opening a replacement number.

Final transfer checklist

  • New provider selected after checking coverage, price, contract and device compatibility.
  • Old account, number and billing details recorded.
  • Contract exit cost and device balance understood.
  • Contacts, texts and voicemail backed up where necessary.
  • Transfer requested through the incoming provider, with the old service still active.
  • SIM or eSIM activation instructions ready.
  • Incoming and outgoing calls, texts, data and voicemail tested after completion.
  • Unwanted old lines cancelled and the final bill reviewed.
