“Switch keyboards” can mean two different things on Android: choosing a different keyboard app, or changing the language and layout inside the keyboard you already use. To choose another app, the keyboard must be installed and enabled, then selected as the phone’s default input method. On a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > General Management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard and choose the enabled keyboard. On other Android phones, search Settings for keyboard or default keyboard, because menu names and locations vary by manufacturer, carrier and software version.
If you only need another language in Gboard, add that language in Gboard’s Languages settings and hold the space bar while typing to switch between configured languages. That changes the keyboard language, not Android’s system language.

First decide what you want to switch
Android separates the keyboard application from the languages or layouts that application provides. Identifying the task first prevents you from changing the wrong setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Your goal | What changes | Where to do it |
|---|---|---|
| Use a different keyboard app | The active on-screen input method, such as changing from one installed keyboard app to another | Android’s default-keyboard or on-screen-keyboard settings |
| Type in another language or layout | The language, script or layout offered by the current keyboard | The keyboard app’s own language settings; in Gboard, switch configured languages with the space bar |
| Restore a keyboard that disappeared | Re-enables an installed keyboard so it can be selected again | On-screen-keyboard settings, or the keyboard switcher while a text field is open |
Changing keyboard apps does not automatically configure every language you need, and adding a language does not install a different keyboard app. Follow the matching procedure below.

Examples of the three tasks
If you want to replace Samsung Keyboard with Gboard, you are changing the default keyboard app. If you already use Gboard and want to type in Spanish, Arabic or another configured language, you are changing Gboard’s language selection. If Gboard was available yesterday but is absent from the list today, you need to enable or restore it before selecting it. These actions can use similar words in Settings, but they are separate controls.
Before switching: install and enable the keyboard
A keyboard can appear in the default-keyboard list only when it is installed and enabled. Google’s Gboard help notes that some Android phones already include Gboard as the default, while others require you to install it first. The same prerequisite applies to any other keyboard app.
- Install the keyboard app if it is not already on the phone.
- Open the phone’s keyboard settings and make sure the app is enabled in the list of on-screen keyboards.
- Only then select it as the default keyboard.
The exact labels differ between Android versions and manufacturers. If you cannot find the control, use the Settings search field and try keyboard, on-screen keyboard, input method or default keyboard.
Why enabling and selecting are separate
Installing an app puts its files on the phone, but Android still needs permission to expose that app as an input method. Enabling it makes it available; choosing it as the default makes it the keyboard that opens when you tap a text field. If you enable an app but do not select it, your previous keyboard normally remains active. If you select an app that is not enabled, it cannot be used.
Keep a known-working keyboard enabled while testing another one. That gives you a way back if the new keyboard is difficult to use, does not provide a language you need or does not appear correctly in a particular app.
Switch keyboards on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung documents the following route for Galaxy phones:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General Management.
- Tap Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard.
- Select the keyboard you want to use.
This path assumes the keyboard is installed and enabled. Samsung’s instructions were updated December 9, 2022, and Samsung cautions that available settings and screens can vary by wireless service provider and software version. If your Galaxy uses different wording, search Settings for default keyboard rather than treating the labels above as universal.

Switch from the keyboard while typing
When a text field is open, some Galaxy configurations expose a keyboard or input-method button in the navigation area. If you see one, tap it and choose an enabled keyboard. If no switcher appears, return to the Default keyboard setting above; the visible shortcut depends on the phone’s software configuration.
Do not confuse this shortcut with Samsung’s keyboard settings. A shortcut can change the active input method for the current typing session, while the Default keyboard control is the place to verify or set the phone-wide selection. If the shortcut offers only one keyboard, return to the keyboard list and enable another one first.

Switch keyboards on other Android phones
There is no single Settings path that is guaranteed to match every Android phone. Manufacturers place the control under different headings, and carriers or software updates can change the labels. The reliable method is to use Settings search:
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field.
- Search for keyboard, default keyboard or on-screen keyboard.
- Open the result that controls the default keyboard or the list of on-screen keyboards.
- Enable the keyboard app you want, if it is switched off.
- Return to the default-keyboard control and select that enabled app.
If search returns several results, choose the one that mentions default, on-screen or input method, not a physical-keyboard or accessory setting. Google’s Gboard setup documentation confirms that Gboard may already be the default on some devices, but it does not define one universal menu path for all manufacturers.

What to do when search terms differ
Try one term at a time because a manufacturer may index only one label. Start with keyboard, then try on-screen keyboard, input method and default keyboard. Open a result that lists installed keyboard apps or explicitly identifies the default. A result about a connected physical keyboard, Bluetooth device or accessory is a different setting and will not change the on-screen keyboard.
Use the quick switcher when Gboard is installed
Google’s Gboard troubleshooting instructions provide a direct way to choose Gboard from an open text field:
- Open an app that has a text field, such as a message or search box.
- When the keyboard appears, touch and hold the Globe key at the bottom of the keyboard.
- Tap Gboard.
This is a keyboard-app switch, not a language change. The Globe key may be hidden when only one keyboard is enabled; in that case, enable another keyboard or use the phone’s Settings search.
The switcher is useful when you need to change apps without leaving the text field. It does not install Gboard, repair a disabled installation or add a language. If Gboard is not listed after you hold the Globe key, check the on-screen-keyboard list and enable it first.

If Gboard was installed but no longer appears as an option after an update or settings change, Google documents re-enabling it in the on-screen-keyboard list:
- Open Settings.
- Open System.
- Tap Keyboard.
- Tap On-screen keyboard.
- Turn Gboard on.
After it is enabled, select Gboard in the phone’s default-keyboard setting. The wording and nesting can differ on your Android version or manufacturer skin, so use Settings search for on-screen keyboard if you do not see the same sequence.
If Gboard is not installed
Install Gboard first, then enable it in the on-screen-keyboard list and choose it as the default. Some Android devices ship with it already enabled; others do not. Installation alone does not guarantee that it is the active keyboard.

If the keyboard keeps reverting
Check the default-keyboard setting again and confirm that the intended app is still selected. Also check that the app remains enabled in the on-screen-keyboard list. A keyboard that is merely installed, but disabled, cannot remain available as the active input method. If the visible controls do not match these descriptions, use Settings search rather than repeatedly following a menu path from another phone.
Change language or layout without changing the keyboard app
If your goal is to type in another language, you usually do not need to change the phone’s default keyboard app. In Gboard, open Gboard’s Languages settings, add the language you need and select the available layout. Once more than one language is configured, switch while typing by touching and holding the space bar, then selecting the desired language.
Google states: “When you change languages with Gboard, your Android device’s language settings aren’t affected.” In practical terms, the keyboard changes the language used for typing suggestions, characters and layout; it does not translate Android’s Settings menus or change the system language.
Language versus layout
A language and a layout are related but not identical. A single language can offer more than one arrangement of keys, while a layout can affect where punctuation or special characters appear. Choose the layout that matches the physical arrangement you expect to use. If a needed language is absent, add it in Gboard’s Languages settings before trying the space-bar switch.
Adding and switching in the right order
- Open Gboard’s Languages settings.
- Add the language you need.
- Choose the layout offered for that language.
- Return to any text field.
- Touch and hold the space bar and select the configured language.
If the space-bar gesture shows only one choice, the second language or layout has not been added, or you are using a different keyboard app whose controls work differently. First identify which keyboard is active, then open that app’s own language settings.
How to confirm which keyboard is active
Open any app with a text field and look at the keyboard that appears. To verify the app rather than just the language, use the Globe-key switcher when it is available, or reopen the phone’s default-keyboard setting and check the selected entry. If the keyboard list shows an app but the keyboard does not appear, check that the app is enabled; an installed-but-disabled keyboard cannot be selected for typing.
To verify a language change in Gboard, hold the space bar and look at the language choices. If only one language is listed, add another in Gboard’s Languages settings first.
App check versus language check
The visual arrangement of keys can change when you switch languages, so appearance alone is not always proof that the keyboard app changed. Use the default-keyboard entry or the Globe-key list to identify the app. Use the space-bar menu and Gboard’s Languages settings to identify the active language. Checking both prevents you from troubleshooting a language setting when the real issue is the selected app.
Troubleshooting common switching problems
The keyboard app is not listed
- Confirm that the app is installed.
- Open the on-screen-keyboard list and enable it.
- Search Settings for keyboard if you cannot locate that list.
- Return to the default-keyboard control after enabling it.
An app cannot become the default while it remains disabled. If the app is installed and enabled but still absent, the visible menu may be different on your device; use the manufacturer’s Settings search terms rather than assuming the Galaxy path applies.

Gboard is missing after an update
Use the documented sequence Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard and turn Gboard on. Then choose it as the default keyboard. On phones that place these controls elsewhere, search Settings for on-screen keyboard or Gboard.
The Globe key is not visible
The Globe key is part of Gboard’s switching instructions, but its visibility depends on the current keyboard configuration. Open a text field and touch and hold the key in the bottom row if it is present. If it is absent, use the default-keyboard setting and ensure the keyboard you want is enabled.
I changed a language but Android’s menus stayed the same
That is expected when you switch languages inside Gboard. Gboard language switching affects typing and does not alter the Android system language. Change the system language separately only if you want the phone’s interface and system settings translated.
The Settings labels do not match
Menu names can vary by manufacturer, carrier and software version. Samsung’s documented path is Galaxy-specific, and Google’s help pages do not claim a universal path for every Android phone. Use the Settings search field and search one term at a time: default keyboard, on-screen keyboard, input method or keyboard.
I selected a keyboard but still see the old one
Confirm that you changed the phone’s default keyboard rather than only adding a language in the old app. Open a fresh text field after selecting the new app. If the old keyboard still appears, return to the default-keyboard setting, verify the selected entry and make sure the new app is enabled.
I can switch apps but not languages
Changing the active app does not automatically add languages to that app. Open the selected keyboard’s own language settings. In Gboard, add the language and layout first, then touch and hold the space bar while typing. If you are not using Gboard, look for that app’s language control instead of relying on Gboard’s gestures.
Only one keyboard appears in the switcher
The quick switcher can offer only keyboards that are installed and enabled. Return to the on-screen-keyboard list, enable the second app and then reopen a text field. If you intended to switch languages rather than apps, add another language in the current keyboard’s language settings.

Official setup documentation explains how to enable and select a keyboard, not which app is best. Make the choice according to the way you type and the controls your phone exposes. Before setting an app as default, check:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Language and layout coverage: Does it include every language, script and layout you need?
- Typing features: Does it provide the correction, prediction, voice-input or shortcut behavior you actually use?
- Accessibility: Are key size, contrast, vibration and gesture controls workable for you?
- Privacy information: Read the app’s current disclosures and permissions yourself; the setup instructions cited here do not establish comparative privacy or security ratings.
- Recoverability: Can you find the app again in the on-screen-keyboard list and switch back if it does not suit you?
Keep at least one known-working keyboard enabled while experimenting. That gives you a route back through the keyboard switcher or Settings if the newly selected app behaves unexpectedly.

A practical comparison method
Test each candidate with the same small set of tasks: enter a short message, switch between the languages you use, locate punctuation and symbols, and check whether the key size and contrast are comfortable. Then verify that the app appears in the phone’s on-screen-keyboard list and can be selected as the default. This process compares your priorities without assuming that one keyboard is best for every Android user.
Do not treat a language list as proof that a particular layout or input feature is available. Open the keyboard’s own language settings and inspect the choices it actually offers on your phone. Likewise, read the app’s current privacy disclosures yourself; the setup steps do not provide a comparative privacy or security ranking.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Following Galaxy instructions on every phone: Samsung’s route is a documented Galaxy example, not a universal Android path.
- Stopping after installation: The app must also be enabled and selected as the default.
- Confusing app and language changes: The Globe key changes keyboard apps; the space bar in Gboard changes among configured languages.
- Assuming a language switch changes Android: Gboard language switching does not change the system language.
- Disabling your fallback first: Keep a working keyboard enabled while testing another app.
- Searching only one menu label: Try the alternate Settings search terms when your phone uses different wording.
- Looking in physical-keyboard settings: Those controls concern accessories, not the on-screen input method.
A concise checklist
- Decide whether you need a different app or only another language/layout.
- Install the desired keyboard if necessary.
- Enable it in the phone’s on-screen-keyboard list.
- Set it as the default keyboard, using Samsung’s Galaxy path or Settings search on another device.
- Open a text field and confirm the selected keyboard.
- For Gboard languages, add the language in Gboard’s Languages settings and hold the space bar to switch.
- If Gboard vanishes, re-enable it under the on-screen-keyboard settings.
The key distinction is simple: Android’s default-keyboard control selects the app, while the keyboard’s own language controls select what you type within that app.

In Gboard, add the language and layout under Gboard’s Languages settings. While typing, touch and hold the space bar and choose a configured language.
Will changing a Gboard language change Android’s system language?
No. Google says that changing languages with Gboard does not affect your Android device’s language settings. It changes typing language, characters, suggestions and layout only.
Why can’t I see the Globe key?
The Globe key’s visibility depends on the current keyboard configuration. If it is absent, use the phone’s default-keyboard setting and verify that the keyboards you want are enabled.
Why are the instructions different on my phone?
Android menu labels and locations vary by manufacturer, carrier and software version. Samsung’s documented path is Galaxy-specific. Use Settings search with terms such as keyboard, default keyboard, on-screen keyboard or input method.
The Bottom Line
To change the keyboard app, install and enable it, then select it under Android’s default-keyboard setting. Galaxy phones document Settings > General Management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard; other phones are best handled with Settings search. To change only the language in Gboard, add the language in Gboard’s Languages settings and hold the space bar while typing. If Gboard disappears, re-enable it in the on-screen-keyboard list.
