How to Switch KDE Plasma from X11 to Wayland (and Back Again)

Switching KDE Plasma from X11 to Wayland is a logout-and-login choice in the SDDM display manager, not a reinstall. Save your work, log out, choose Plasma (Wayland) from the session menu at the login screen, and sign in. Confirm the result with echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE; a successful Wayland session prints wayland.

Before you switch

The procedure changes the desktop session for your next login. It does not convert applications, remove X11, or change your personal files. Keep the X11 entry available until you have checked your graphics driver, monitors, accessibility tools, screen-capture software, and any automation you depend on.

  • Save open work. Logging out closes the current Plasma session and may terminate applications that have not saved their state.
  • Know which display manager you use. The steps below assume SDDM, KDE’s commonly used login manager. A different display manager may use different labels or menus.
  • Check that the Wayland session is installed. If the login menu does not offer it, install the distribution’s Plasma Wayland session package first.
  • Plan a recovery path. If Wayland has a graphics or application problem, the same menu normally lets you select Plasma (X11) at the next login.

Switch from X11 to Wayland in SDDM

  1. Save your work and log out. Use Plasma’s application menu, the desktop’s power controls, or the logout command provided by your distribution. Do not merely lock the screen; the session chooser appears when you reach the login screen.
  2. Open the session chooser on the SDDM screen. It is usually at the bottom-left. Depending on the SDDM theme, it may be labeled Desktop Session, Session, or shown as a small menu or icon.
  3. Select Plasma (Wayland). Choose the entry explicitly named for Wayland, not a generic Plasma entry whose behavior may be distribution-specific.
  4. Sign in. Enter your credentials. SDDM should start a Plasma Wayland session for this login; many installations remember your last selection for subsequent logins.
  5. Verify the session. Open Konsole or another terminal and run:
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

The expected output is:

wayland

If the command prints x11, you are still in an X11 session. Log out, return to SDDM, and select Plasma (Wayland) again. A session can also be checked from graphical system-information tools, but XDG_SESSION_TYPE reports the session type directly and is the simplest confirmation.

When auto-login hides the menu

Automatic login can take you straight into Plasma without displaying SDDM’s session chooser. Log out so that SDDM is reached, then temporarily disable automatic login in your distribution’s system settings or SDDM configuration. After the menu becomes available, select Plasma (Wayland), sign in, and verify the variable. You can re-enable auto-login after confirming that the desired session starts correctly; make sure the configured default remains the session you intend to use.

If “Plasma (Wayland)” is missing

A missing menu entry usually means the Wayland session files are not installed or your distribution has packaged them separately. It is not evidence that your hardware cannot run Wayland.

Install the distribution’s session package

Use your distribution’s package search and release documentation to identify the package that supplies the Plasma Wayland session. Ubuntu-family systems commonly use the package name plasma-workspace-wayland. Other distributions may use a different split package, a differently named metapackage, or include the session in the normal Plasma installation.

Do not copy the Ubuntu package name into another distribution’s command. Package names, repository names, and the required restart vary by release. Install the package using the distribution’s supported package manager, then log out or restart the display manager and check SDDM again.

Check the result after installation

  • Return to the graphical login screen rather than only restarting an application.
  • Open the session menu and look for Plasma (Wayland).
  • If the entry still does not appear, confirm that the package installation completed, the repository is enabled, and SDDM is the display manager actually running.
  • On systems with multiple desktop environments, ensure you are editing the session list used by the active display manager, not a second installation on another disk or partition.

Some distributions delay a new Plasma session behind their own release schedule. Their package search and release notes are authoritative for the exact package and supported Plasma version.

How to switch back to Plasma X11

  1. Save work and log out of Wayland.
  2. At SDDM, open the same session chooser.
  3. Select Plasma (X11).
  4. Sign in and, if needed, confirm the result with echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE; it should print x11.

This fallback exists only while your distribution still ships the X11 session components. Do not remove those components until your hardware and applications are known to work under Wayland. If Plasma (X11) has disappeared after an upgrade, consult the distribution’s package information for the X11 session rather than deleting or replacing display-manager files at random.

What changes in a Wayland session?

Wayland is a display protocol and security model used by the Plasma compositor (KWin). X11 is a separate, older display system. Selecting Wayland changes the compositor and the way applications obtain windows, input, and screen contents; it does not require reinstalling Plasma or rewriting application data.

X11 applications continue through Xwayland

Most existing X11 applications can run inside a Wayland session through Xwayland, an X11 server hosted by the Wayland compositor. Native Wayland and X11 applications can therefore run side by side. A program being an X11 application does not by itself require you to return to an X11 desktop.

Specialized utilities need closer checking

Tools that capture the screen, stream a desktop, emulate input, automate windows, or depend on global shortcuts interact with the display server’s security boundaries. Some older utilities expect unrestricted X11 access and may need a Wayland-native version, a portal-based configuration, or a documented compatibility setting. Test these tools before making Wayland your only session.

  • Screen capture and streaming: check that the application offers a Wayland or portal capture method and can select the intended monitor or window.
  • Input emulation and macro tools: verify support for Wayland protocols; global synthetic input is intentionally more restricted than under X11.
  • Window automation: test scripts that identify windows, move them, or send keystrokes, because X11-only automation assumptions may fail.
  • Global shortcuts: recreate shortcuts through Plasma or a Wayland-compatible utility if an X11 helper no longer receives them.
  • Accessibility software: confirm the specific assistive technology’s Wayland support with its documentation and your distribution’s version.

X11 versus Wayland: practical decision points

Concern Plasma on Wayland Plasma on X11
How you select it Choose Plasma (Wayland) in SDDM at login. Choose Plasma (X11) in the same menu, if still installed.
Legacy application compatibility X11 programs normally run through Xwayland alongside native Wayland programs. X11 applications use the native X11 server.
Screen capture, streaming and input tools May require Wayland-native or portal support; unrestricted X11 assumptions can fail. Older X11-oriented tools generally have the access model they expect.
High-refresh and multi-monitor use KDE reports support for adaptive sync, optional tearing, and high-refresh multi-monitor setups; results still depend on hardware, drivers, and applications. Existing configurations may be more predictable for hardware or software that has not adopted Wayland.
Graphics-driver requirement Requires a compositor and driver stack with working Wayland support. Uses the established X11 driver path.
Accessibility and automation Check each tool’s Wayland support and required portals or protocols. Legacy global-access tools may continue to work as designed.
Long-term KDE direction The target session for future Plasma releases. KDE said support continues into early 2027, while a planned Plasma 6.8 transition is Wayland-exclusive; distributions can alter timing.

There is no universal performance percentage that applies to every GPU, monitor arrangement, or application. Choose based on the features you actually use and keep the other session available while you test.

NVIDIA checklist before choosing Wayland

KDE’s NVIDIA guidance identifies several conditions for the proprietary driver path. Treat these as a checklist rather than as a guarantee: your distribution’s kernel, packaging, and configuration still determine whether the pieces are installed and loaded correctly.

  • Current Plasma release: use a Plasma version supported by the guidance and by your distribution.
  • Supported NVIDIA driver: KDE lists driver version 495.44 as the minimum for KWin’s supported path.
  • NVIDIA EGL Wayland library: the EGL integration needed by Wayland applications must be installed by the appropriate driver package.
  • nvidia_drm modesetting: it must be enabled so KWin can use the required kernel display path.
  • XWayland 24.1 or newer: KDE lists this level for avoiding flicker in XWayland applications.

Check DRM modesetting

In a terminal, run:

cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset

KDE’s expected output is:

Y

An output of N, an empty result, or a missing file indicates that modesetting is not active or the module is not loaded in the current boot. Driver package names, kernel parameters, and initramfs-update commands are distribution-specific. Follow your distribution’s NVIDIA instructions for enabling the setting and rebuilding the initramfs; do not paste a command written for another distribution.

Diagnose an NVIDIA Wayland failure

  1. Return to Plasma (X11) from SDDM so you have a working graphical desktop.
  2. Check the installed driver version and whether the NVIDIA module is loaded using your distribution’s documented tools.
  3. Confirm the EGL Wayland library and XWayland package are installed for the same architecture as your desktop.
  4. Check the modesetting file above after a full reboot, because a kernel parameter change may not apply to an already running kernel.
  5. Retest Wayland and record the exact symptom: black screen, login loop, flicker in an X11 application, missing monitor, or a tool that cannot capture the screen. Each points to a different component.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The login screen loops or returns to SDDM

Select Plasma (X11) and sign in. A loop usually means a compositor, driver, or session-startup component failed, not that your files are damaged. From the working session, update Plasma and the graphics stack through your distribution’s supported repositories, then check the distribution’s session and driver logs before trying again.

Wayland starts but a monitor is missing

Open Plasma’s display configuration and verify the monitor’s cable, input source, refresh rate, and enabled state. Test with one monitor or a conservative refresh rate, then add displays back one at a time. Multi-monitor behavior depends on the GPU driver, kernel, compositor version, and monitor timing; do not infer a general Wayland limitation from one configuration.

An X11 application flickers or renders incorrectly

Confirm whether the program is running through Xwayland. Update Plasma, Xwayland, and the graphics driver using your distribution’s packages. NVIDIA users should pay particular attention to KDE’s listed XWayland 24.1 requirement for avoiding flicker. If the application remains unusable and has no Wayland-compatible update, select X11 for the task while retaining Wayland for normal work.

Screen sharing or recording cannot see a window

Use the application’s Wayland or desktop-portal capture option rather than an X11-only capture method. Check the sharing dialog’s monitor or window permission and restart the application after changing it. A tool that assumes it can read every window through the X server may not work in Wayland’s security model.

Global shortcuts or automation stopped working

Recreate the shortcut in Plasma’s own shortcut settings or use a utility that explicitly supports Wayland. Review the tool’s documentation for compositor-specific protocols and permissions. Do not disable security controls merely to restore an X11 automation technique; switching to X11 for that workflow is the safer fallback if no supported Wayland method exists.

The session variable says X11 after selecting Wayland

Log out completely and select the entry again; an existing session cannot be converted in place. If the chooser selection is not retained, check for auto-login or a distribution-specific default-session setting. Verify with echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE only after Plasma has fully loaded.

Keeping both sessions during the transition

Dual availability is useful while Plasma and distributions complete their migration. Keep the X11 session installed, test Wayland after graphics-driver or Plasma upgrades, and note which session you used when reporting an application bug. This separates a Wayland-specific issue from a general application or hardware failure.

  • Use Wayland for ordinary work if your displays, applications, capture tools, and accessibility needs pass your tests.
  • Use X11 for a particular workflow when an essential tool has no supported Wayland path.
  • After each major update, verify both menu entries and keep a saved copy of any custom display or shortcut settings.
  • Do not remove X11 solely because Wayland starts once; test suspend and resume, monitor reconnection, docking, high-refresh modes, and the applications you use every day.

KDE’s support timeline and what it means

The KDE Plasma Team wrote in 2025 that “The Plasma X11 session will be supported by KDE into early 2027.” The same announcement says Plasma 6.8 is planned to be Wayland-exclusive; X11 applications are expected to continue running through Xwayland. KDE’s known-issues planning note records an expected October 14, 2026 date for that transition. These are KDE plans, not a promise that every distribution will ship the change on the same day. Distributions can delay a Plasma release, split packages differently, or retain an X11 session temporarily.

For that reason, check the actual session list on your computer before upgrading and read your distribution’s release notes. If a future upgrade removes Plasma (X11), the practical preparation is to resolve driver, monitor, capture, accessibility, and automation issues while an X11 fallback is still available.

A complete verification checklist

  • SDDM displays Plasma (Wayland) in its session chooser.
  • echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE returns wayland after login.
  • All monitors appear at the intended resolution and refresh rate.
  • Suspend, resume, docking, and monitor hot-plugging work as expected.
  • Your browser, office applications, games, and other daily programs launch; X11 programs work through Xwayland where needed.
  • Screen recording, video calls, streaming, and screen sharing use a Wayland-compatible capture path.
  • Global shortcuts, macros, remote-control tools, and accessibility software perform their required tasks.
  • NVIDIA systems meet the driver, EGL, modesetting, and XWayland conditions documented by KDE and the distribution.
  • Plasma (X11) remains available until these checks are complete.

Bottom line: make the change at login, not by reinstalling

Log out, choose Plasma (Wayland) in SDDM, and verify wayland with echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE. Install the distribution’s Wayland session package if the entry is missing, and use Plasma (X11) from the same menu whenever a driver or specialized application still requires it. Wayland is KDE’s direction of travel, but a deliberate test with an X11 fallback is the safest way to switch.
