For a second Google login inside your existing Chromebook session, open the time area, choose Settings, open Accounts, select + Add Google Account, and complete the sign-in prompts. This adds account access for supported websites and Android apps without creating another Chrome browser profile. If you actually need two separate Chromebook user sessions, use Add person and the Chromebook user switcher instead; that is a different feature with different storage, app, and sign-out rules.
First decide what “switch accounts” means
Chromebook has three different account concepts that are easy to confuse:

- Additional Google Account: Adds another Google login to the current Chromebook setup for use with websites and Android apps. This is the method that avoids creating a separate Chrome profile.
- Chromebook user: Creates a separate device session with its own user information and files. This is intended for people who use the Chromebook regularly.
- Chrome profile: Separates browser information such as bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings. It is useful when browser data must remain distinct, but it is not required merely to use another Google login.
The steps below start with the first option because it matches the title. The other methods are covered later so you can choose correctly rather than adding a profile or user unnecessarily.

Add a second Google Account without creating a Chrome profile
Use this procedure when you want another account available in the Chromebook session, for example a personal and a work login.

- At the bottom-right corner of the screen, select the time to open the system tray.
- Select Settings.
- In Settings, open the Accounts section.
- Select + Add Google Account.
- Follow the on-screen sign-in and verification steps for the other account.
Google describes this as adding multiple Google Accounts to a Chromebook. The accounts can be available at the same time and can be selected in supported websites and Android apps. This does not create a second Chrome browser profile, so your existing profile’s browser data remains in the same profile.
How to use the added account
After the account is added, open the website or Android app where you need it and use that service’s account control. A site may show an account chooser, an avatar menu, or a “Sign in with Google” prompt. Select the newly added address when it appears. Some sites keep their own session cookies and may require you to sign out inside the site before another account can be selected.
Adding the account to Chromebook does not guarantee identical switching behavior on every website. The site determines whether it supports several simultaneous Google sessions, remembers the last account, or asks you to choose again. If a site keeps opening the wrong account, use its own account menu or sign-out control rather than creating a Chrome profile solely to force a different login.

When a separate Chromebook user is the better choice
Choose a Chromebook user instead of an additional account when two people need genuinely separate device sessions. Google describes this arrangement for people who use the Chromebook regularly. Each user has separate user information and files, so one person’s local Chromebook data is not mixed into the other’s session.
Add another person to the Chromebook
- Sign out of the current Chromebook session.
- At the bottom of the sign-in screen, select Add person.
- Select the setup type offered for the new user.
- Follow the prompts to complete that person’s Chromebook sign-in.
The Chromebook owner or an organization administrator can control who is allowed to sign in. If Add person is missing or blocked, the device policy may be responsible.
Sign in another user without signing out first
When you are already signed in and want another person to join the device session, open the time area, open the power menu, select your Google Account email, and choose Sign in another user. Complete the other user’s sign-in. This creates a multiple-user session; it is not a Chrome profile switch.

Switch between users who are signed in
Once multiple people are signed in, select the time area and the avatar, then choose the user you want. You can also use the documented keyboard shortcuts:
- Ctrl + Alt + . (period): switch to the next account.
- Ctrl + Alt + , (comma): switch to the previous account.
These shortcuts switch Chromebook user sessions. They do not switch between additional Google Accounts inside a website and do not operate as Chrome profile controls.
Limits of multiple-user Chromebook sessions
Play Store and downloaded Android apps
Google limits the Play Store and downloaded Android apps in a multiple-user session to the account that signed in first. A second signed-in user cannot automatically use those apps with the same access. To use Play Store or downloaded Android apps with another account, sign out of all accounts and sign in with the desired account first.
You cannot sign out only one user
A Chromebook signed in to multiple accounts does not provide a one-account-at-a-time sign-out command. Use Sign out all, then sign back in with the account that should remain active. This is a device-session rule and does not apply to merely adding another account for websites.
Why a Chrome profile is different
A Chrome profile is a browser-data boundary. It keeps items such as bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, and browser settings separate from another profile. That separation can be valuable when two people share one browser installation or when a work browser must not contain personal browsing data.

Adding the account through Chromebook Settings keeps you in the existing Chromebook setup and avoids maintaining another browser profile. If your real requirement is that bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings never mix, then the profile distinction is the reason to choose a profile despite the title’s preference.

Guest browsing is temporary, not account switching
Guest mode is designed for short-term access after signing out, not for keeping an additional Google login available. A guest session has no Play Store access. When you exit guest mode, files created in the guest session, cookies, website data, and browsing activity are deleted from the Chromebook.
Deletion of local guest data does not mean the network, websites, or service providers receive no information; Google’s guest-mode guidance explains that those parties may still receive information as part of normal web use. Use guest mode when you specifically want a temporary, non-persistent session, not when you need recurring access to a second account.
Privacy and permission details when accounts share one setup
Adding an account makes it available to apps and websites, but access still depends on the permissions you grant and the way each service handles signed-in accounts. Review the account shown in an app or sign-in dialog before approving an action.

Google warns that an Android app with contacts permission can find contacts from all Google Accounts signed in on the Chromebook. Therefore, adding an account can broaden the set of contacts visible to an app that already has that permission. Check an app’s requested permissions before allowing access, especially on a shared or work-managed device.
Extensions and websites can also have access governed by their own permission prompts and account settings. An additional account is not a guarantee that every app will isolate data exactly as you expect; verify the selected account and permissions in the specific service.
Remove an added Google Account from the Chromebook
If you no longer want the extra account available on that device, remove it through Chromebook Settings. Removing the additional account signs it out of apps and websites that used it on the Chromebook. It does not delete the Google Account, its cloud data, or its account settings.

This is a device-level removal. You will need to sign in again on the Chromebook if you later add the account back, while the account itself continues to exist elsewhere.

Owner and organization policies can hide these controls
On a personal Chromebook, the owner controls which users may sign in. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator can restrict which accounts are permitted and whether guest browsing is available. A missing + Add Google Account, Add person, or guest option can therefore be a policy decision rather than a damaged Chromebook.
When a control is unavailable, contact the organization’s administrator and ask which sign-in methods the device permits. Do not assume that a blocked option can be restored by creating a Chrome profile; managed policies can apply to the Chromebook itself.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The second account does not appear on a website
- Confirm that the account was added under Settings > Accounts > + Add Google Account.
- Open the website’s own account menu or its “Sign in with Google” flow and select the added address.
- If the site restores the previous login automatically, sign out inside that site and start its account chooser again.
- Remember that account switching is controlled by the website; Chromebook cannot force every site to expose every added account.
You expected a user switch but only changed a website login
An additional Google Account changes account availability inside supported apps and websites. A user switch changes the entire Chromebook session. To switch users, use the time area and avatar, or the Ctrl + Alt + . and Ctrl + Alt + , shortcuts after multiple users are signed in.
The Play Store is using the wrong account
In a multiple-user session, Play Store and downloaded Android app access is tied to the first account that signed in. Sign out all users, then sign in first with the account that should have that access.
You cannot remove just one signed-in user
Use Sign out all. Chromebook does not offer a one-user-at-a-time sign-out command in a multiple-user session.
An account or user option is missing
Check whether the Chromebook is owned by a school or employer, or whether the owner has restricted additional users. Ask the administrator or owner to confirm the allowed sign-in policy.
Practical choices for common situations
One person, two Google logins
Add the second account in Settings > Accounts. Use each website’s account chooser as needed. This keeps one Chromebook user and one Chrome profile while providing access to both logins.
Two regular users sharing one Chromebook
Add the second person as a Chromebook user. Switch sessions from the time area and avatar, or with the keyboard shortcuts. Plan around the Play Store limitation and the requirement to sign out all users when changing which account controls Android apps.

Use separate Chrome profiles or separate Chromebook users. An added Google Account alone does not create a browser-data boundary; it only adds another account for supported apps and websites.
A visitor needs temporary access
Sign out and use guest browsing. Do not use guest mode when the visitor needs persistent Play Store access or when files and website data must remain available after the session ends.
A short checklist before you switch
- Decide whether you need another website login, a separate Chromebook session, or separated browser data.
- For another website or app login, use Settings > Accounts > + Add Google Account.
- For another regular device user, use Add person from the sign-in screen.
- For an active user-session switch, use the avatar menu or the documented keyboard shortcuts.
- Expect Play Store and downloaded Android apps to follow the first account in a multiple-user session.
- Use Sign out all when ending a multiple-user session.
- Review app permissions, particularly contacts access, after adding another account.
- Ask the owner or administrator about missing controls on managed Chromebooks.
The key distinction
Use Add Google Account when the goal is simply to use another Google login in the current Chromebook setup without creating a Chrome profile. Use Chromebook users when people need separate device sessions and files; use Chrome profiles when browser data itself must be separated; and use guest mode only for temporary access. Choosing among those four functions prevents the common mistake of treating a website account, a Chromebook user, a browser profile, and a guest session as the same thing.
