How to Switch from Google Health to Stride Without Losing Your Activity History

You can connect Stride to Google Health without deleting the original records, but you should treat the move as a read-only import rather than a guaranteed full migration. Keep Google Health intact, wait until Stride access is available for your account, grant only the requested permissions, check which records appear, and save Stride’s JSON export as a second copy.

What “switching” actually means

The safest way to move from Google Health to Stride is to preserve Google Health as your source archive and let Stride read compatible records. Stride describes its Google Health connection as read-only: it requests permission to read activity and fitness data, sleep data, and health metrics and measurements. It does not describe the connection as a write-back or destructive transfer.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters because there are two separate continuity questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Source preservation: Are the original records in Google Health still present? Stride says it does not change or delete those records when you connect, disconnect, or delete Stride records.
  • Destination coverage: Which records can Stride actually read and display? Availability depends on the source records, the device that created them, and the permissions you grant. Stride does not promise that every historical record, metric, or Google Health screen will appear in Stride.

Therefore, “without losing history” should mean keeping the original Google Health account and making an additional Stride copy, not assuming that Stride will reproduce the entire Google Health timeline.

Check that Stride is available before changing anything

Availability can change independently of your data. When the Stride product site was checked on 13 October 2026, it said public downloads on the App Store and Google Play were coming soon. Its current development and testing focus was described as iOS, and no Android availability had been announced. Google Health access could also depend on whether your account has been enabled for the connection.

Check the current status at strideapp.health and in the relevant app store before disconnecting another source or changing your health-data settings. Do not remove Google Health data while waiting for a Stride release or an account invitation. If the app is not available to you, there is no completed migration to verify.

  • Confirm that the listing is the wellness app at strideapp.health, not a different service using the Stride name.
  • Confirm that your phone and operating system are supported by the current release.
  • Confirm that the Google Health connection is offered in your account; the public site may not expose the feature to every user at the same time.
  • Keep the original Google Health account signed in and accessible until you have inspected the imported records.

Protect the original Google Health records

Do not make a migration depend on a single destination. Before connecting Stride, make sure you can still open Google Health and see the records you care about. If your device or account offers its own export, retain that copy as well, but do not assume that an export format from one service can be imported into Stride.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stride says it reads Google Health data and does not write changes to the original records. It also says deleting Stride records does not delete the corresponding originals in Google Health. This means the conservative order is:

  1. Leave Google Health connected to the devices and accounts that produced your history.
  2. Record which date ranges and metrics matter to you, such as steps, recorded exercise, sleep, heart rate, resting heart rate, active energy, and available HRV.
  3. Connect Stride and inspect its result before changing the source account.
  4. Only after verification, decide whether Stride should become your preferred viewing destination.

Do not delete the Google Health account to tidy up duplicate apps. A Stride connection is not a substitute for the original source archive.

What Stride can read from Google Health

Stride’s policy identifies supported categories that can include sleep, heart rate, available heart-rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, steps, active energy, and recorded exercise. “Can include” is important: the actual records depend on what your device supplied to Google Health and what Google Health makes available under the permissions you approve.

Record category What determines whether it appears What you should verify
Steps The source device must have written step records to Google Health, and Stride must have permission to read activity data. Check several dates, including a recent day and an older day.
Recorded exercise The exercise must exist in a compatible Google Health record; Stride does not promise to reproduce every view or field. Check activity type, date, duration, and any visible measurements.
Sleep Sleep records must be present in Google Health and covered by the granted sleep permission. Check overnight records and whether naps or stages are shown where applicable.
Heart rate Readings depend on the device, recording schedule, and source data available to Google Health. Compare representative days rather than expecting every sample to be visible.
Resting heart rate A source must provide a compatible resting-heart-rate measurement. Check whether the value is displayed as a daily metric or another summary.
HRV Only available HRV records are eligible; missing source data cannot be recreated by Stride. Check the measurement method if you later compare another source.
Active energy The source must supply compatible energy records under the activity and fitness permission. Check units and dates before treating totals as equivalent to Google Health.

This is a compatibility list, not a completeness guarantee. Stride does not publish a guaranteed number of years, a migration percentage, or a fixed import time for the initial connection.

Connect Google Health to Stride safely

Stride’s public documentation does not provide a universal, screen-by-screen onboarding sequence, so labels and placement can vary by release. Use the following controlled process rather than assuming that a particular button or synchronization duration applies to every account.

  1. Open the official Stride app when access is enabled. If the app or Google Health option is not available, stop here and leave your existing setup unchanged.
  2. Choose the Google Health connection. Start it from Stride’s source or health-data connection area. If the option is missing, your account may not yet have access.
  3. Review the permission request. Stride currently describes three read-only permission groups covering activity and fitness, sleep, and health metrics and measurements. Approve only the categories you want Stride to use.
  4. Return to Stride after authorization. Allow the app to finish whatever initial read it presents. Do not infer that a short loading message means every historical record has been imported.
  5. Inspect the imported history. Check multiple dates and categories instead of looking only at Today. Look for gaps, missing record types, unexpected units, or values that differ from your Google Health view.
  6. Keep Google Health available during verification. Compare the same dates in both apps. If a record is absent from Stride, first confirm that it exists in Google Health and that the relevant permission is enabled.

There is no evidence-backed synchronization time or promised look-back period. Treat the first visible result as the set Stride has successfully read, not proof that an unseen background process will eventually reproduce the rest.

Verify the history that arrived

A practical verification pass should be deliberate and repeatable. Use a small sample that covers different record types and time periods:

  • Sleep: Check at least one overnight record and any sleep detail that matters to you.
  • Cardio metrics: Check heart rate, resting heart rate, and HRV where your source provides them.
  • Energy: Check active-energy values and their units.

Write down discrepancies rather than “fixing” the source immediately. A missing value may result from a source-device limitation, a permission choice, a record type that Stride does not support, or a different way of summarizing the same measurements. If the value is present in Google Health but absent in Stride, retain the Google Health record and contact Stride support through the current app or website for clarification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand Stride’s one-source model

Stride says that only one selected source drives Today and Trends. It does not combine totals from different sources into one unified history. This affects both migration and later troubleshooting.

If you previously used another health-data source in Stride, selecting Google Health can change the numbers shown in Today and Trends because the app is now reading a different record set. Different devices may record at different intervals, apply different filtering, or use different measurement methods. A change in totals is not automatically evidence that records were deleted.

When comparing sources, use these axes:

  • Supported record types: Does each source provide the metric you are checking?
  • Available time range: How far back does each source actually contain records?
  • Measurement method: Are the values produced by the same sensor and calculation?
  • Permission status: Is Stride authorized to read the relevant category?
  • Selected source: Which source is currently driving Today and Trends?

HRV is a concrete example. Stride’s recovery documentation notes that Fitbit data arriving through Google Health commonly uses RMSSD, while its Apple Health integration reads SDNN. Those are distinct baselines; switching sources can make HRV trends look different even when both connections are working. Do not treat the resulting series as one continuous measurement without accounting for the method change.

Disconnecting Google Health: what changes and what does not

Disconnect only after you have confirmed that Stride is showing the records you expect and that Google Health remains available as your archive. According to Stride, disconnecting Google Health stops new imports while existing Stride history remains.

Action Effect in Stride Effect on Google Health originals
Leave the connection active Stride can continue reading permitted, compatible records as they become available. Original records remain in Google Health.
Disconnect Google Health New imports stop; existing Stride history remains. Stride says the original Google Health records are not deleted.
Delete Stride records or the Stride account Associated Stride records are removed according to the account action. Stride says the original Google Health records remain.

Disconnecting is therefore not a way to force a fresh, complete migration. It is a source-access change. If you reconnect later, do not assume that the app will fill every gap or preserve the same source totals; the result depends on what Google Health and Stride make available at that time.

Make a separate Stride backup with JSON export

Stride documents a portable JSON export at Settings → Privacy & your data → Export your data. Use it after the import has been checked if you want a separate copy of the records held in Stride.

  1. Open Stride’s Settings.
  2. Open Privacy & your data.
  3. Select Export your data.
  4. Save the resulting JSON file somewhere you control, such as encrypted storage or a trusted backup system.
  5. Keep the export date and the associated Stride account context with the file so you know which snapshot it represents.

This export is a copy of Stride account data. It is not evidence that Stride accepts a reciprocal JSON import, and it does not replace the original Google Health records. Keep both when continuity matters.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected records

Google Health is not offered as a connection

Check the current app release and your account access. The public product site previously described downloads as coming soon, and access could be enabled gradually. Do not delete your existing source while waiting. If the option remains unavailable, the issue is access or release availability rather than a failed import.

The permission screen does not include the metric you need

Stride’s documented permission groups cover activity and fitness, sleep, and health metrics and measurements. A record outside those categories may not be readable. Reopen the operating system’s health permissions and confirm that the relevant category is allowed, but do not grant permissions that Stride does not request or explain.

Recent records appear, but older history does not

Stride does not publish a guaranteed look-back period or a complete-import promise. Confirm that the older record still exists in Google Health and that it is a supported type. If it is present in the source but absent from Stride after the connection is established, preserve the source record and report the specific date and metric to Stride support.

Numbers differ between Google Health and Stride

Compare like with like: the same date, metric, unit, source device, and selected source. Stride’s one-source model means it does not add totals from separate sources. Different sampling schedules, calculations, and measurement methods can produce different summaries without either record being deleted.

Disconnecting stopped updates

That is the expected result. Stride says disconnection stops new imports while the existing Stride history remains. Reconnect Google Health if you want future permitted records to flow again, subject to the account and app access available at that time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You deleted Stride data by mistake

Check the Google Health account first; its originals should remain according to Stride’s policy. Restore the Stride JSON export if you made one, but do not assume Stride supports importing that file back into the account. If no export exists, contact Stride support with the account and dates involved while retaining Google Health as the authoritative source.

A migration checklist

  • Google Health still opens and shows the records you care about.
  • Stride is available to your account and on your device; availability was still changing as of 13 October 2026.
  • You have not deleted or disconnected the original source before verification.
  • You understand that Stride reads, rather than writes to, Google Health.
  • The three relevant read-only permission groups have been reviewed.
  • Recent and older dates have been checked for activity, sleep, and health metrics.
  • You know which source currently drives Stride’s Today and Trends.
  • Any differences in HRV or other measurements have been evaluated for method and device changes.
  • A JSON export has been saved from Settings → Privacy & your data → Export your data if you need a second copy.
  • You understand that disconnecting stops new imports, while deleting Stride records is a separate action from deleting Google Health originals.

What this migration cannot guarantee

No source cited for Stride provides a migration-success percentage, a guaranteed number of historical years, or a universal completion time. Stride’s recovery feature requires at least seven observations for a personal baseline, but that is a threshold for its recovery estimate, not a limit on how much history can be imported.

The honest outcome is conditional continuity: Google Health remains your original record store, and Stride becomes an additional view of the compatible data it can read. The safest switch is complete only after you have checked the destination and kept an independent copy.
