To make Google Assistant your phone or tablet’s primary assistant again, open the Gemini app, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Switch to Google Assistant, select Google Assistant, and tap Switch to confirm. Test the change by saying “Hey Google” or using your device’s touch shortcut, such as holding the power button.
You do not have to uninstall Gemini, reset Android, or buy anything. If the Gemini menu does not contain the switch, Android’s Digital assistant app setting provides a second route. Because manufacturers organize Settings differently, searching Settings for that exact phrase is often the quickest way to find it.

Switch from Gemini to Google Assistant in the Gemini app
This is Google’s most direct route on an Android phone or tablet. It changes the primary mobile assistant without removing Gemini or changing the assistant on every other Google-connected device.
- Open Gemini. Launch the Gemini mobile app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Open your account menu. Tap your profile picture or your initial. On some versions, you may need to open the app menu before the profile control appears.
- Choose “Switch to Google Assistant.” This option is in Gemini’s account or settings menu.
- Select “Google Assistant.” Choose Google Assistant as the assistant you want to use.
- Confirm with “Switch.” Tap Switch in the confirmation dialog.
After the confirmation, Google Assistant should respond when you say “Hey Google” or use a touch activation method supported by your device, such as holding the power button. Google describes this as changing the primary assistant on your phone or tablet.

Before you begin
Make sure you are changing the setting on the Android phone or tablet you actually want to use. The control is associated with that device, not simply with the Google Account shown in the app. Keep the Gemini app installed while you make the change so that the documented switch control is available. If you later decide to remove Gemini, handle that as a separate step and verify the default afterward.
Menu wording can change as Google and device makers update their software. Look for the meaning of the labels rather than expecting every screen to match a screenshot from another phone. The important sequence is the explicit choice of Google Assistant followed by the Switch confirmation.
Use Android Settings if the Gemini option is missing
The wording and location of digital-assistant controls vary among Android manufacturers and device models. If Gemini does not show a Switch to Google Assistant entry, use Settings instead.

- Use Settings search and enter digital assistant app. Searching is usually faster than looking through every category because manufacturers place this control in different locations.
- Open the result named Digital assistant app, Default digital assistant app, or a very similar label.
- On devices that follow Google’s general menu structure, go to Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app.
- Choose Google Assistant from the available assistants.
Some devices use another Google-documented path: Settings > Apps > Assistant > Digital assistants from Google > Google Assistant. If neither path appears, search Settings again using shorter terms such as assistant or default apps, then consult the support instructions for your exact phone model. There is no single menu layout that applies to every Android device.
Why the Settings route may look confusing
Android can display Google as the default app while the selected assistant inside that Google app is either Gemini or Google Assistant. The label “Google” by itself therefore does not prove which assistant is active. Confirm the selection on the detailed digital-assistant screen or by testing the assistant after you change it.
The Settings route is especially useful when Gemini will not open, when the account menu is not loading, or when you want to inspect the system-level selection directly. It is not a different kind of assistant; it reaches the same Android default that the Gemini confirmation changes.
How to confirm that Google Assistant is active
Use a trigger you normally use for the mobile assistant:

- Say “Hey Google” while the phone is able to listen for the wake phrase.
- Hold the power button if that is your device’s assistant shortcut.
- Use another configured touch gesture or navigation control that opens the digital assistant.
The response should come from Google Assistant rather than the Gemini interface. A Google Assistant panel or response confirms the primary selection more reliably than the name shown in a top-level Settings category.
Test at least one voice method and one touch method when possible. “Hey Google” and a button or gesture are separate ways of invoking the mobile assistant, and a manufacturer may configure a particular button differently. If voice works but a button opens another screen, the default assistant can still be correct; inspect the phone’s gesture, button, or navigation settings for that shortcut.

What switching back changes
It changes the primary assistant on the phone or tablet
The setting determines which Google assistant handles mobile voice and touch activation. Once Google Assistant is selected, “Hey Google” and supported touch shortcuts invoke Google Assistant on that Android device.
It does not erase Gemini Apps Activity
Changing the assistant does not automatically delete activity saved by Gemini. If you want to remove that history, review Gemini Apps Activity separately and use its deletion controls. Switching assistants and deleting account activity are separate actions. Do not treat the confirmation dialog as a data-deletion prompt; it changes the assistant selection only.
Google Assistant activity can still be saved
When Web & App Activity is enabled, interactions with Google Assistant may be saved to your Google Account. If account history matters to you, review the activity setting in your Google Account rather than assuming that the switch changes retention. Selecting Google Assistant does not automatically turn Web & App Activity off, and turning that activity setting off is a separate account decision.
It does not remove Gemini features from your account
The switch changes which assistant answers the phone’s primary activation. It does not promise that Gemini Apps Activity, Gemini account data, or the Gemini app will be removed. Those tasks require their own controls. Conversely, keeping Gemini installed does not force it to remain the primary assistant after you select Google Assistant.
What happens on other Google-connected devices
The phone or tablet setting is not a universal switch for every device signed in to the same account. Google says Gemini may replace Assistant on paired mobile devices such as watches, headphones, and earbuds. Its guidance also says that smart displays, speakers, TVs, cars, and locked Pixel Tablets continue to use Google Assistant.
In practical terms, changing the assistant on your Android phone does not necessarily change the assistant on a speaker, television, car system, or another paired device. Check each device’s own settings if you need a different assistant there. A result on a watch or pair of earbuds therefore should not be used as proof that the phone’s setting failed.
Device scope also explains why two products using the same Google Account can appear to behave differently. The phone’s default digital-assistant selection governs mobile activation on that phone; non-mobile Google hardware can follow its own product rules.
Do you need to uninstall Gemini?
No. Uninstalling Gemini is not required to make Google Assistant primary. More importantly, deleting the Gemini app by itself does not automatically remove Gemini as the device’s default digital assistant. The default-assistant setting and app installation status are separate.
If you leave Gemini installed, you can still open it when you want to use it. If you remove it, verify the default assistant afterward through Android Settings; do not assume that uninstalling alone made the change. If the system still shows a Google assistant selection, explicitly choose Google Assistant there.

Deleting or disabling an app is therefore the wrong first fix for a primary-assistant problem. Change the digital-assistant setting first, then decide whether the Gemini app should remain available for occasional use.

Google says some familiar Google Assistant features may not be supported in the Gemini mobile app and advises switching when a feature you rely on is unavailable. Availability can depend on the device, account, language, region, and the current app version, so a feature that works for one person may not be available for another.
Use the switch when your priority is restoring the established Assistant experience for mobile voice commands or touch activation. You can later return to Gemini through the same account-menu control if you decide its features better fit your needs. The choice is reversible through the documented menu; it is not a phone reset or a permanent account migration.
Avoid assuming that every difference is caused by the default setting. Some behavior belongs to the individual app, some to the device maker’s shortcut configuration, and some to account or availability conditions. Confirm the primary assistant first, then investigate a specific feature if it remains unavailable.
Choosing between the two switching routes

Start in Gemini because it is the shortest documented path. Use Settings when that control is absent, when you want to inspect the system default directly, or when Gemini is not opening correctly.

Google’s general guidance allows the default digital assistant to be changed, and some devices may offer None. That is a different goal from switching to Google Assistant, so select it only if you want no digital assistant assigned.
Troubleshooting when Google Assistant does not appear
The “Switch to Google Assistant” option is not there
- Open Android Settings and search for digital assistant app.
- Check both Apps > Default apps and any Assistant entry under Apps.
- Look for an option called Default digital assistant app rather than a control simply labeled Google.
- Use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model if the search produces no relevant result.
Google explicitly notes that settings differ by device, so a missing menu does not necessarily mean the phone cannot use Google Assistant. A different label or a different nesting under Apps may be all that has changed.
Settings shows “Google,” but you cannot tell which assistant is selected
Open the detailed assistant-selection screen instead of relying on the top-level app name. Android may identify the provider as Google while the selected assistant is Gemini or Google Assistant. Select Google Assistant on that detailed screen, save the choice if prompted, and test a trigger.
Gemini still opens after you selected Google Assistant
- Reopen Gemini and check whether the profile menu now offers Switch to Google Assistant or shows Google Assistant as the current choice.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app and verify the selected assistant.
- Test both “Hey Google” and your physical or gesture shortcut. A shortcut can have its own device-specific configuration, so one trigger may behave differently from another.
If the detailed Settings screen names Google Assistant but a touch gesture still launches something else, investigate that gesture’s assignment rather than repeatedly changing the default. The default assistant and the button mapping are related but not identical controls.

The power-button shortcut does something else
Holding the power button is only one example of a touch activation method, and manufacturers can assign that button differently. Check the phone’s gesture, button, or navigation settings for the configured assistant shortcut. The underlying default assistant can be correct even when a particular button is mapped to another action.
You removed Gemini but Gemini was still the default
Uninstalling an app does not by itself change the default digital-assistant assignment. Open the system assistant settings and explicitly select Google Assistant. If the option is unavailable, restart the Settings search with digital assistant app and follow the model-specific menu path.
You cannot find any digital-assistant setting
Try the exact phrase digital assistant app, then shorter searches such as assistant and default apps. Check under Apps as well as Default apps; Google documents both a general Default apps route and an alternate Assistant route. If the phone’s search still returns nothing, use the manufacturer’s instructions for that model because Android menu placement is not uniform.
The app and Settings appear to disagree
Use the detailed system selection screen as the tie-breaker, then invoke the assistant from the phone itself. The top-level label may only say Google, and an account menu can take a moment to reflect a recent change. A successful voice or touch test is the practical confirmation that the phone is using Google Assistant.
Privacy and account-history checks after switching
There are two separate history questions to consider. First, switching away from Gemini does not delete Gemini Apps Activity. Review or delete that activity separately if that is your intention. Second, when Web & App Activity is enabled, Google Assistant interactions may be stored in the Google Account. Changing the primary assistant does not automatically alter that account setting.
These controls are independent of whether Gemini remains installed. You can use Google Assistant as the primary mobile assistant, keep Gemini available as an app, and manage each service’s activity through its own controls. Avoid deleting the app when your actual goal is only to change history retention, and avoid deleting activity when your actual goal is only to change the assistant.
Important limits and expectations
- Android version and manufacturer matter: Google’s help pages do not promise identical labels or paths on every phone and tablet.
- Device scope matters: the change applies to the mobile device where you make it; other Google-connected hardware can keep its own assistant.
- Account data is separate: switching assistants does not delete Gemini Apps Activity, and Web & App Activity can continue saving Assistant interactions.
- Feature support varies: Google’s description of missing or unsupported Assistant features is general, not a claim that a specific feature is unavailable for every user.
- App removal is separate: uninstalling Gemini does not automatically change the default digital assistant.
- No purchase is required: this is a software setting on an Android device you already own.

Google Gemini Apps Help states: “You can switch to using Google Assistant as your primary assistant on your phone or tablet in your settings.” The Gemini-app route provides the most visible shortcut to that setting, while Android’s Default apps controls provide the system-level fallback.
