How to switch from Chrome to a privacy-focused browser without losing bookmarks and passwords

You can move from Chrome to a more privacy-focused browser without deleting your Chrome profile: install the new browser, import bookmarks first, handle passwords according to your operating system and the destination browser’s limits, then test important sites before changing defaults or removing anything. The safest migration is staged, keeps Chrome available as a fallback, and treats any exported password file as exposed credential data.

What a safe Chrome migration looks like

A browser switch has three separate parts: moving local data, checking that websites still work, and deciding whether to enable synchronization. Do them in that order. Bookmarks are usually portable through a browser importer or an HTML file. Passwords are more complicated because Chrome encrypts them and each destination browser supports different operating systems and import methods.

Keep Chrome installed and signed in during the transition. Do not uninstall it, delete its profile, or clear its data until you have checked bookmark folders and successfully signed in to several important accounts in the new browser. Mozilla says Firefox’s import process does not delete Chrome data or change Chrome settings, so using the migration tool is not a destructive operation.

Choose a destination browser by migration requirements

There is no universal “most private” choice established by the documentation used here. Firefox and Brave are useful supported examples, but their defaults, controls, compatibility and data-handling models differ. Compare the things that affect your own daily use rather than relying on a single privacy label.

Bookmark migration Can import supported Chrome data through its browser-data importer, or load Chrome’s exported HTML bookmark file. Supports browser-data import and bookmark HTML workflows.
Chrome password migration Mozilla documents a CSV workaround for Windows and Linux when automatic Chrome-password import is unavailable. The interface change begins with Firefox 139 for English locales and Firefox 140 for all locales. Brave’s support documentation says Chrome passwords cannot currently be imported through its normal importer because of Chrome’s encryption.
Sync model Firefox Sync can make bookmarks, history, saved passwords and other selected data available across your devices. When Sync is enabled, Brave says bookmarks, passwords and other data are stored in an encrypted file on its cloud-hosting provider.
Compatibility check Test extensions and sites you rely on; browser engines and extension permissions can differ from Chrome. Test extensions and sites you rely on; Chromium compatibility does not guarantee identical behavior.

Before choosing, list the websites, extensions, payment flows, work portals and hardware controls you use every week. A privacy setting that breaks a required site may be less practical than a browser you can configure while retaining the protection you need.

Prepare Chrome and the new browser

Leave the source profile intact

  • Keep Chrome installed and avoid signing out or deleting its profile.
  • Make sure Chrome has finished any pending profile synchronization before exporting or importing.
  • Have a private local folder ready for a temporary password CSV if your route requires one.
  • Install the destination browser from its official distribution channel and update it before starting.

Close unrelated apps that may lock the profile. Mozilla’s current Firefox directions specifically say to close Chrome before running the import. If an importer reports that Chrome is open, close every Chrome window, check the taskbar or dock, and try again.

Decide what really needs to move

Import only the categories you need. Bookmarks, browsing history, cookies, autofill data, extensions and passwords have different privacy and compatibility consequences. Moving cookies can preserve sessions but also carries old site data into the new profile; moving history may be useful for search and address-bar suggestions but is not required for bookmarks or passwords. If the importer offers checkboxes, select deliberately rather than accepting every category.

Import Chrome bookmarks directly

Firefox’s browser-data importer

  1. Open Firefox and open its application menu.
  2. Choose the browser-data import option (the label may appear as Import Browser Data).
  3. Select Google Chrome as the source.
  4. Choose the supported categories you want, including bookmarks.
  5. Run the import and wait for the completion message.
  6. Open the Firefox bookmarks library, bookmarks menu and bookmarks toolbar. Expand nested folders and confirm that a sample of old, deeply nested and toolbar bookmarks is present.

Firefox’s import does not remove Chrome’s bookmarks or alter Chrome settings. If a folder appears in a different location, look under the imported bookmarks folder and the toolbar folder before assuming data is missing.

HTML export and import fallback

Use an HTML file when direct import is unavailable, fails, or you want a portable backup. Google Chrome Help describes this as the way to take Chrome bookmarks to another browser.

  1. In Chrome on desktop, open the Bookmark Manager.
  2. Open the manager’s menu and choose the option to export bookmarks.
  3. Save the generated HTML file in a private local folder with a recognizable name.
  4. In the destination browser, open its bookmarks or library menu and choose Import bookmarks from HTML (wording varies).
  5. Select the exported file and complete the import.
  6. Inspect the bookmarks menu, library and toolbar, including folders several levels deep.

An HTML export contains bookmark addresses and folder structure, not your saved passwords. Treat it as personal browsing information: do not post it publicly or upload it to an unfamiliar service. Keep it until the new browser passes your checks, then remove it if you do not need a backup.

Move passwords with the correct platform expectations

Password migration is the step most likely to differ from instructions written for another browser version or operating system. Do not assume that a successful bookmark import means passwords will also move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firefox on Windows and Linux

Mozilla currently says Chrome passwords can no longer be imported automatically into Firefox on Windows, and that Linux cannot import them automatically either. Mozilla documents a CSV route instead. Its support notes that the Firefox interface reflects this change beginning with Firefox 139 for English locales and Firefox 140 for all locales. Labels can therefore differ if your Firefox release or display language is older or different.

  1. In Chrome, open Google Password Manager through Chrome’s settings.
  2. Use the password manager’s export function and confirm the operating-system authentication prompts.
  3. Save the resulting CSV only in a private local location.
  4. Open Firefox’s browser-data migration wizard and choose the password-import option that accepts the Chrome CSV, if shown in your release.
  5. Select the CSV and complete the import.
  6. Open Firefox’s saved-logins page and verify several entries, including an account with a nonstandard username and one whose site uses a subdomain.
  7. Sign in to important sites in a private window or a fresh tab to confirm that the imported usernames and passwords actually work.

Mozilla also notes that payment methods can no longer be imported from Chrome on Windows because of changes in Chrome’s encryption mechanism. Plan to enter payment information manually in the new browser or use the payment provider’s own secure autofill process; do not expect the password CSV route to carry card data.

Brave

Brave’s current support page says its normal browser importer cannot bring over Chrome password data because of the way Chrome encrypts passwords in its code. You can still use Brave’s importer for supported browser data and use Chrome’s HTML export for bookmarks, but do not interpret a successful bookmark import as evidence that passwords migrated.

If Brave does not provide a supported password-import path for your platform and release, keep Chrome available while you sign in manually or use another secure, supported transfer method. Never bypass the encryption by copying profile databases or downloading an untrusted conversion utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other destinations and operating systems

Password support is browser- and platform-specific. The documented Firefox limitations for Windows and Linux do not establish identical behavior on macOS, mobile operating systems or other browsers. Check the destination browser’s current help page for your exact release before exporting credentials. If its documentation does not describe a supported import, assume that bookmarks can be moved separately but passwords will require manual sign-in or a documented alternative.

Protect the password CSV

A Chrome password export is a readable CSV, not an encrypted vault. Anyone who obtains the file can read the usernames, site addresses and passwords in it. Mozilla’s documentation describes the local-readable nature of the exported data; the following handling procedure limits the time it exists.

  • Export only when you are ready to import.
  • Save it on a private, access-controlled local drive, not a shared folder.
  • Do not email it, attach it to a ticket, place it in cloud storage, or paste its contents into a note or chat.
  • Import it promptly, then test representative logins before closing the migration session.
  • Delete the CSV and empty the operating system’s Recycle Bin or Trash after verification.
  • If the file was copied to a backup, temporary folder or removable drive, remove those copies too.
  • Change especially sensitive passwords if you suspect the file was exposed.

Deleting the visible file is practical risk reduction, not a guarantee against every form of forensic recovery. The important controls are minimizing copies, limiting access and removing the export as soon as the destination browser is confirmed.

Verify the new profile before changing defaults

Bookmarks

  • Check the total set of top-level folders.
  • Open a few bookmarks from the toolbar, the main menu and nested folders.
  • Test a bookmark with a long URL, query parameters or a non-HTTPS address if you still use one.
  • Confirm that duplicate folders are understood rather than deleting one prematurely.

Passwords and sign-ins

  • Test several high-value accounts, such as email, banking, work and password-recovery services.
  • Check both the username and password; a saved entry with the wrong username can look like a failed import.
  • Confirm that the browser offers to save a newly changed test password only after you understand its storage settings.
  • Verify multi-factor authentication separately. A password import does not transfer authenticator apps, hardware keys or recovery codes.

Websites, extensions and settings

Open the sites you use for work, shopping, streaming and government services. Check downloads, camera and microphone permissions, pop-ups, content blockers and extensions. A Chromium-based destination may retain more extension compatibility than a browser with a different engine, but permissions and site behavior can still change. Reinstall only the extensions you trust; importing a profile is not a reason to carry every old extension forward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the new browser as default only after testing

  1. Keep Chrome available for at least one normal work or personal cycle after migration.
  2. When bookmarks and important sign-ins pass verification, set the destination browser as the operating system’s default browser through system settings or the browser’s first-run prompt.
  3. Open links from email, documents and other apps to confirm they launch in the intended browser.
  4. Keep Chrome for recovery until you are confident that no required site, extension or account is missing.

There is no technical requirement to uninstall Chrome immediately. Removing it is a cleanup choice, not part of the import process. If you later remove Chrome, make a final backup of any bookmarks or other data you intentionally want to retain and confirm that you know how to recover accounts without the old profile.

Decide whether to enable sync

Local migration and synchronization solve different problems. Importing copies data from Chrome into one new profile. Sync makes selected data available on multiple devices and introduces an online-storage and account-recovery decision.

Firefox Sync

Mozilla describes Firefox Sync as a way to make bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords and more available across your devices. Review the categories before enabling it, protect the account with strong authentication, and consider whether every device signed in to that account should receive saved passwords.

Brave Sync

Brave says that, when Sync is enabled, bookmarks, passwords and other data are saved in an encrypted file on its cloud-hosting provider. Encryption does not remove the need to review account access, recovery options and the service’s current terms. Decide whether the convenience of cross-device access is worth adding cloud storage to a profile that you deliberately moved away from Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local-only storage

You can leave sync disabled and keep bookmarks and passwords on the device. This reduces cloud exposure but makes device transfers, reinstalls and hardware failure your responsibility. Maintain a recovery plan that does not require leaving a readable password export lying around.

What about a browser that stores data locally?

DuckDuckGo’s help documentation says its browser stores bookmarks and passwords locally and warns that uninstalling the app or browser deletes them. That matters if you are considering it for a device transfer or reinstall: local storage can avoid a cloud account, but uninstalling before exporting or otherwise recovering data can remove the only copy. The available documentation does not establish equivalent Chrome bookmark-and-password import support, so do not assume that a direct migration wizard exists.

Troubleshoot common migration failures

The importer cannot see Chrome

  • Close every Chrome window and retry.
  • Confirm that Chrome is installed for the same user account running the destination browser.
  • Update both browsers and check that the destination browser supports importing from your Chrome release.
  • Use the HTML bookmark export if bookmark detection still fails.

Bookmarks imported but folders look wrong

Look in the destination browser’s imported-bookmarks folder, library and toolbar separately. Importers may preserve the hierarchy under a new top-level folder rather than reproducing Chrome’s exact menu placement. Move folders only after you have confirmed that the originals are present.

Passwords are missing

Check the documented platform limitation first. Firefox’s Windows and Linux workflow may require the CSV migration wizard; Brave’s normal importer does not import Chrome passwords. If the destination browser offers no supported route, do not use profile-database hacks. Keep Chrome available and sign in manually while you evaluate a documented option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A login still fails after import

Open the saved entry and compare the site address, username and password. Some services use a different login subdomain than the page you first bookmarked. Test in a normal window, complete any multi-factor prompt, and reset the password through the site if the credential itself is no longer valid.

You deleted the CSV too early

If imported entries are present and tested, there is no reason to recreate the export. If entries are missing, check whether the browser’s import wizard reported an error and whether the CSV was saved under another local name. Re-export only after closing the destination browser and repeating the secure handling steps.

A practical migration checklist

  • Choose the destination browser after checking privacy controls, compatibility, sync and password support for your operating system.
  • Install it and keep Chrome installed.
  • Close Chrome before a Firefox browser-data import.
  • Import bookmarks directly or export Chrome bookmarks to HTML and import that file.
  • Expect password handling to differ: Firefox documents a CSV route for Windows and Linux; Brave says its normal importer cannot import Chrome passwords.
  • Keep any password CSV private, import promptly, test logins, delete the file and empty Trash or Recycle Bin.
  • Check folders, important accounts, extensions and daily websites.
  • Set the new browser as default only after verification.
  • Choose sync separately, understanding what data is stored online and how recovery works.

Key takeaway

The least risky switch is incremental: move bookmarks first, use only a documented password path for your operating system, verify real accounts and folders, and retain Chrome until the new profile has proved itself. A privacy-focused browser can reduce unwanted tracking without forcing you to sacrifice access to the data you already use, provided you treat password exports as sensitive files and make sync an informed, separate choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will importing data delete my Chrome bookmarks or settings?

Mozilla says Firefox’s import process does not delete Chrome data or alter Chrome settings. Keep Chrome installed until you verify the new profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I import Chrome passwords directly into Brave?

Brave’s current support documentation says Chrome password data cannot be imported through its normal importer because of Chrome’s encryption.

Where should I keep the exported password CSV?

Keep it only in a private local location, do not email or upload it, import it promptly, then delete it and empty Trash or Recycle Bin after testing.

Does browser sync replace a local migration?

No. Importing moves data into one profile; sync makes selected data available across devices and adds an online-storage and account-recovery decision.
