Brave for Android documents direct HTML import. Firefox for Android offers file import only as an experimental, progressive rollout; its dependable alternative is importing on Firefox desktop and syncing to Android.
Bookmark migration does not automatically move passwords, history, open tabs, payment details, or autofill. Keep Chrome and the exported file until you have checked the new browser, then handle each remaining data type separately.

What actually moves when you switch browsers?
A bookmarks HTML file is a portable list of saved pages and folders. It is not a complete copy of your Chrome profile. Treat the migration as two jobs: move and verify bookmarks first, then decide how to handle the rest of your browser data.

Mozilla explicitly cautions that Firefox for Android cannot read another browser’s data directly from the Android device: “Firefox for Android can’t import bookmarks or other browsing data directly from another browser installed on your Android device.”

Back up Chrome bookmarks before changing anything
Use Chrome on a computer for the documented export
Google’s documented procedure is for Chrome on a computer, not Chrome for Android. Leave Chrome installed and make sure the bookmarks you need are visible in Chrome on a computer. If they appear only on your phone, first make them available on a computer through your existing Chrome setup, or find an HTML export you already created. Do not assume the Android app can produce the same file.
- Open Chrome on the computer that contains your bookmarks.
- Open the Bookmark Manager.
- Open the manager’s More menu.
- Choose Export Bookmarks.
- Save the resulting HTML file somewhere you can identify later.
Google describes the result plainly: “Chrome exports your bookmarks as an HTML file.” The official instructions are available in Google Chrome Help.
Protect the backup
- Keep the original HTML file until you have checked the destination browser on every device you care about.
- Give the file a clear name such as
chrome-bookmarks-2026-10-16.htmlso you do not confuse it with a later export. - Store a second copy in a location you control. The file contains your saved-site list, which can reveal interests, work systems, or private services even though it does not contain your passwords.
- Do not delete Chrome or clear its data until the new browser shows the folders and high-value bookmarks you expect.
Choose the destination by the migration route you need
There is no single privacy winner established by these instructions. Choose according to whether you have a computer, whether direct Android import matters, and which privacy and sync behavior fits your routine.

Import the HTML file directly into Brave on Android
Brave is the clearest route when you already have a Chrome-generated HTML file and want to complete the import on the phone. Move the file to Android storage using a transfer method you trust, then follow Brave’s documented menu path.
- Open Brave on your Android phone.
- Open the Main menu.
- Choose Bookmarks.
- Open the Bookmarks overflow menu.
- Choose Import bookmarks.
- Select the Chrome HTML file in the Android file picker and confirm the import.
Brave accepts bookmarks HTML files from other browsers, so the file does not need to have been produced by Brave. After checking the result, Brave uses the same Bookmarks overflow area for Export Bookmarks if you want a new portable copy later. Its Android file import and export features should not be mistaken for a full Chrome-profile transfer.

Import bookmarks into Firefox for Android
Route A: use the Android HTML import when it appears
Mozilla describes Firefox for Android’s HTML bookmark import as experimental and progressively rolling out. Availability can depend on the installed version, account or remote-improvement settings, and rollout status, so two Android phones may not show the same option.

- Copy the exported Chrome HTML file to the Android device.
- Open Firefox for Android and go to Bookmarks.
- Open the bookmarks overflow menu.
- Look for Import from file. If it is present, select it and choose the HTML file.
- Keep Firefox open while the import runs. Mozilla says the time depends on the amount of data, so do not close the app simply because the operation is not immediate.
If the menu item is missing, that does not mean your file is wrong. The feature is not available to every installation yet, and Mozilla notes that remote improvements may need to be enabled for the rollout. Use the desktop-and-sync route instead of repeatedly reinstalling the app.
Route B: import on Firefox desktop, then sync
This is the established alternative when Android file import is unavailable. Import the HTML file into Firefox on a computer, sign in to the same Mozilla account on the Android app, and enable bookmark synchronization. Firefox Sync is account-based rather than a one-time bookmark file; Mozilla documents additional categories, including passwords, history, payment methods, and open tabs, that you can select for syncing.
- Install or open Firefox on a computer.
- Use Firefox’s desktop bookmark-import command to select the Chrome HTML file.
- Sign in to a Mozilla account in desktop Firefox.
- Turn on bookmark syncing in the Sync settings.
- Sign in to the same Mozilla account in Firefox for Android.
- Enable bookmarks in the Android Sync settings and wait for the account data to appear.
Sync is useful when you actively use Firefox on more than one device, but it changes the recovery responsibility: protect the Mozilla account and its recovery methods, and verify that the categories you want are enabled rather than assuming every browser datum is included.
What about DuckDuckGo for Android?
DuckDuckGo can be considered if its built-in tracker blocking and increased encryption match your priorities, but the available documentation does not provide a verified Chrome-to-DuckDuckGo bookmark-import procedure. Do not promise yourself a direct HTML route based only on the fact that another browser supports one.

Verify the import before retiring Chrome
An import can finish without making every mistake obvious. Verification is the point at which you decide whether the old browser and backup can finally be removed.
- Open the destination browser’s bookmark manager.
- Check the top-level folders and several nested folders, not only the first few entries.
- Open your most important links: work dashboards, banking or government portals, recovery pages, travel reservations, and any site whose URL you would struggle to reconstruct.
- Search for duplicates and obvious truncation. If a folder appears empty, check whether it was placed under an imported parent folder.
- Compare the count and structure against Chrome while Chrome is still available.
- Export the destination browser’s bookmarks if you want a second independent backup.
Keep the original Chrome HTML file and Chrome itself until these checks pass. A bookmark points to a URL; it does not prove that you are still signed in, that a site account works, or that a saved password came across.
Migrate passwords, history, tabs, and autofill as separate jobs
Passwords
Never expect the HTML file to contain Chrome passwords. Review the destination browser’s official password-import or export process. Firefox Sync documents passwords as a selectable sync category. Brave for Android documents password export as a CSV file, which should be handled as sensitive data and deleted securely after use if you create one. If no supported transfer path fits, use a password manager or re-enter credentials rather than copying them into an unverified file.

Bookmark migration does not reconstruct browsing history. If historical visits matter, Firefox Sync documents history synchronization between signed-in Firefox installations; otherwise, accept that the new browser starts with an empty history.
Open tabs
Save tabs that you need later as bookmarks before switching. Firefox Sync documents open-tab synchronization, but a Chrome tab session will not appear merely because its URLs were exported as bookmarks.
Autofill and payment information
Review addresses, form data, and payment methods independently. These are not part of the bookmark HTML file, and the safest procedure depends on the destination browser and your device’s credential storage.

Configure privacy controls after the bookmarks are safe
Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox says Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled by default on Android. Its Standard level blocks social-media trackers, cross-site trackers, and cryptominers. Strict blocks additional tracking content, but Mozilla warns that stricter blocking can interfere with some site functionality. If a legitimate site’s login, checkout, video player, or embedded tool breaks, inspect the protection setting for that site before abandoning the browser entirely. Brave Sync and recovery
Brave’s privacy policy says Sync data is encrypted and that the decryption key remains on users’ devices. That design limits what the service can recover, but it also means a lost device or lost key can make the synced data unrecoverable. Keep a current bookmark export rather than treating Sync as your only backup. The policy is at Brave’s Browser Privacy Policy.
DuckDuckGo local storage
If you choose DuckDuckGo, decide immediately whether its Sync and Backup feature is part of your plan. Without it, uninstalling the Android app removes locally stored bookmarks and passwords. This is a storage and recovery trade-off, not a measure of overall browser privacy.
Set the new browser as Android’s default only after verification
Once bookmarks and any separately migrated data are confirmed, change the phone’s default browser through Android’s system setting for the default browser app. The exact label and location vary by Android version and manufacturer, so use the Settings search for default browser or default apps rather than relying on a universal menu path. Opening a link in the new browser is not the same as changing the system default.
After the change, open a link from another app to confirm the expected browser launches. Keep Chrome installed for a short overlap period if you still need to retrieve an overlooked password, tab, or bookmark, then remove it only after your backup and verification checks are complete.
Troubleshooting common migration problems
The Chrome export option is missing on Android
Google’s documented export steps specify Chrome on a computer. Check Chrome on a computer where the bookmarks are available, or locate an existing HTML export. Do not treat a phone-only bookmark view as proof that an Android export command exists.
Brave cannot find the file
Confirm that the HTML file is stored on the phone and is visible to Android’s file picker. Re-copy the original export if the file was renamed or moved, then repeat Main menu → Bookmarks → overflow menu → Import bookmarks. Keep the original untouched so you can retry without starting over.
Firefox has no “Import from file” option
Mozilla’s Android HTML import is experimental and progressively rolled out. Update through your normal app channel, check whether remote improvements are enabled as Mozilla describes, and use Firefox desktop import plus Sync if the option still does not appear. Reinstalling repeatedly cannot guarantee access to a server-controlled rollout.
The import seems stuck
Keep Firefox open and allow for a duration that matches the amount of bookmark data; Mozilla does not promise a fixed completion time. If it fails, retry with the original HTML file and avoid editing it manually. A desktop import followed by Sync is the fallback for Firefox.
Bookmarks are present but passwords are not
That is expected from an HTML bookmark migration. Start the separate password-transfer plan for the browser you selected; do not re-import the bookmark file expecting credentials to appear.
Bookmarks disappear after uninstalling DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo says local bookmarks and passwords are deleted on uninstall unless Sync and Backup was used. Reinstalling may not restore data that existed only on the removed app, which is why an independent HTML export or enabled backup should come first.
