How to Switch From Android Auto to Apple CarPlay Without Losing Your Settings

Move your personal data and configure CarPlay as two separate jobs. Apple’s Android-to-iPhone migration instructions cover items such as contacts, messages, photos, calendars, and some settings, but they do not list Android Auto preferences as transferable. After the iPhone is ready, connect it to a vehicle that supports Apple CarPlay using its wired USB or wireless method, then select CarPlay on the vehicle display if it does not open automatically.

Your exact menus depend on the car’s make, model, model year, and infotainment system. The steps below show the reliable parts of the process and identify the decisions that must be checked in the vehicle manual.

What actually transfers when you change phones

Android Auto is a phone-to-vehicle projection system, while Apple CarPlay is Apple’s equivalent for an iPhone. They are separate configurations. Connecting the iPhone to the same car does not import the Android Auto profile, saved projection preferences, or the order in which apps appeared on the car screen.

Apple’s Move to iOS support instructions list contacts, message history, photos and videos, files and folders, accessibility settings, display settings, browser bookmarks, email accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, call history, calendars, and other content that can be moved during iPhone setup. Some free apps can be matched when an equivalent is available in both app stores and the transfer is supported. The published list does not include Android Auto settings.

That distinction gives you a safe expectation:

  • Your personal data may transfer through Move to iOS or through separate account synchronization.
  • CarPlay must be set up independently on the iPhone and in the vehicle.
  • Navigation favorites, audio preferences, paired-phone records, and projection-priority rules may need to be checked or recreated. The outcome is vehicle-specific rather than guaranteed by Apple’s migration process.

Do not erase the Android phone until contacts, photos, messages, authenticator access, and any app data you need are available on the iPhone. For third-party app data that does not move automatically, Apple directs users to the app developer’s transfer instructions.

Before you disconnect Android Auto

Record the settings you care about

Take screenshots or write down the items that are easy to overlook: navigation destinations and saved places, audio-source preferences, steering-wheel button assignments, favorite contacts, voice-assistant choices, notification behavior, and which phone the car normally connects to first. These details are often stored by the vehicle, by the phone app, or by an online account, so a screenshot is more dependable than assuming a migration tool will reproduce them.

Back up both phones

Keep the Android phone charged and connected to Wi-Fi while you migrate. Confirm that the iPhone has enough storage for the data you intend to copy. If the iPhone has already completed initial setup, Apple’s automated Move to iOS flow requires erasing the iPhone and starting the setup again; otherwise, move content manually using Apple’s manual-transfer guidance and each app provider’s instructions.

Check the iPhone and car ports

Identify the connector on the iPhone and the USB port in the vehicle. Some vehicles have multiple USB sockets but only one supports smartphone projection. A cable that charges may not provide data, so note whether your current cable is designed for data as well as power.

Confirm that the vehicle supports Apple CarPlay

Android Auto compatibility does not prove that the same vehicle supports CarPlay. Check the specific make, model, year, and infotainment edition in Apple’s CarPlay compatibility information and in the vehicle owner’s manual. A car may support wired CarPlay, wireless CarPlay, or both; an aftermarket stereo has its own compatibility list and firmware requirements.

Google’s Android Auto setup guidance also tells owners to consult the vehicle manual or contact the manufacturer for setup details. Use that advice for the car’s projection menus, but do not treat an Android Auto approval as a CarPlay approval.

  • Wired only: CarPlay starts through a supported USB data port and a suitable cable.
  • Wireless only: CarPlay uses the vehicle’s wireless pairing mode and the iPhone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.
  • Both: You can normally use either route. The first wired connection may offer to enable wireless CarPlay for later attempts.

If CarPlay is absent from the vehicle’s supported-features list, an iPhone setting or cable cannot add it. You would need a compatible infotainment system or stereo, which is a hardware decision outside this phone switch.

Move your Android data without confusing it with CarPlay setup

Use Move to iOS during initial iPhone setup

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and begin setup until the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen appears.
  2. Choose From Android.
  3. Install and open Apple’s Move to iOS app on the Android phone, then follow its pairing instructions.
  4. Enter the temporary code shown on the iPhone, join the temporary Wi-Fi network when prompted, select the content categories to copy, and leave both phones connected to power until the progress bars finish.
  5. Complete iPhone setup and verify the transferred categories before resetting or trading in the Android phone.

The categories Apple names include contacts, messages, photos and videos, files and folders, accessibility and display settings, bookmarks, email accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, call history, and calendars. App matching is conditional: an app must be available in both stores and supported by the transfer process. An app’s internal preferences or locally stored data may still require a separate export or account sign-in.

If the iPhone is already set up

For the automatic Move to iOS route, Apple instructs you to erase the iPhone and repeat setup. If you do not want to erase it, move information manually: synchronize contacts and calendars with their accounts, copy photos and files by Apple’s documented method, reinstall apps from the App Store, and follow the developer’s process for app-specific data. Do not assume that a successful contact or photo transfer also copied Android Auto preferences.

Verify accounts and security before changing the car

Open the iPhone versions of your navigation, music, messaging, and charging-related apps and sign in. Check that two-factor authentication codes, passkeys, and recovery numbers work. CarPlay can display supported versions of these apps, but it cannot repair an incomplete account migration.

Choose wired or wireless CarPlay

Connection What the vehicle must support What you do on the iPhone Cable requirement Best use
Wired CarPlay through a vehicle USB data port Start the car, ensure Siri is enabled, and connect the iPhone to the correct USB port Use a data-capable cable with connectors that match the iPhone and car; Apple recommends an Apple USB cable Vehicles without wireless CarPlay, or diagnosing a wireless connection
Wireless Wireless CarPlay and the vehicle’s pairing mode Use the steering-wheel voice-command button or the vehicle’s pairing control, turn on iPhone Wi-Fi, enable Auto-Join for the CarPlay network, then select the car in Settings > General > CarPlay when required None for normal operation after pairing A cable-free connection in a vehicle that explicitly supports wireless CarPlay
Both Wired and wireless CarPlay Make the first connection by the method supported in the manual; a wired connection may offer wireless setup for later drives Needed for wired use or initial setup, depending on the vehicle Choosing between a dependable cable and cable-free use

Neither method is universally better. Compatibility and your preference for a cable-free connection are the meaningful decision points; the available evidence does not establish a universal speed, reliability, or sound-quality winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up wired Apple CarPlay

  1. Start the vehicle and leave it in park while pairing.
  2. Make sure Siri is turned on in the iPhone’s settings. The exact Siri label can vary with the iOS release, so use the Settings search field if necessary.
  3. Plug the iPhone into the vehicle’s USB port marked for smartphone projection or CarPlay. If there are several ports, use the one identified in the owner’s manual.
  4. Unlock the iPhone and accept any prompt asking to allow CarPlay while the phone is locked.
  5. When the vehicle display presents a smartphone-integration choice, select Apple CarPlay. If it does not open, select the CarPlay logo from the vehicle’s home screen or projection menu.
  6. If the vehicle supports wireless CarPlay, read the first-connection alert. It may offer to use wireless CarPlay on future drives after this wired pairing.

Apple Support describes the basic method as setting up CarPlay by connecting the iPhone and vehicle through the vehicle’s USB port or its wireless capability. The cable recommendation is conditional: first check whether your existing cable supports data and fits both connectors. Buy a compatible CarPlay data cable only if the current one, the port, or the connector type prevents a data connection.

Set up wireless Apple CarPlay

  1. Start the vehicle and put its stereo into wireless pairing, Bluetooth pairing, or smartphone-integration mode, using the vehicle manual’s control.
  2. Press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button if that is how the vehicle advertises wireless CarPlay pairing.
  3. On the iPhone, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. When the vehicle creates a CarPlay Wi-Fi network, make sure Auto-Join is enabled for that network.
  4. Open Settings > General > CarPlay.
  5. Select the vehicle from the available cars. Approve the prompts on the iPhone and the vehicle display.
  6. Wait for CarPlay Home to appear. If it does not appear automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle screen.

Some vehicles use a different sequence or require a specific button press. Follow the vehicle manual if its instructions differ from this general Apple flow. Wireless CarPlay still depends on the vehicle’s support; turning on iPhone Wi-Fi cannot create wireless capability in a wired-only system.

Stop the car from choosing the old Android phone

An iPhone can pair successfully while the vehicle continues to start Android Auto or another phone profile. This is usually a selection or priority issue in the infotainment system, not proof that CarPlay failed.

  1. Open the vehicle’s phone, device, projection, or smartphone-integration menu.
  2. Select the iPhone and choose CarPlay when the system offers separate projection choices.
  3. If the vehicle lists several phones, move the iPhone to the preferred device position if the system provides that control.
  4. Disconnect the Android phone’s USB cable and temporarily disable its Bluetooth connection while testing the iPhone.
  5. Save the vehicle’s choice, turn the car off, wait for the infotainment system to shut down, and test the next start.

There is no universal menu path for simultaneous phones or projection priority. Some vehicles retain the previous Android pairing, some ask which phone to use, and some prioritize the most recently connected device. The make, model, year, and infotainment system manual is the authoritative source for that behavior.

Navigation and media accounts

Sign in to the navigation and music services you use, then confirm that favorites, downloaded content, and voice-search permissions are present. Favorites held only on the Android phone may not be part of the iPhone migration. If the service synchronizes through an account, signing in may restore them; otherwise, recreate them inside the iPhone app.

Vehicle preferences

Check the car’s own settings for audio source, volume behavior, contact access, voice-command assignment, driver profiles, and automatic connection. These are vehicle controls, not Android Auto settings, and the available options differ by manufacturer. Do not reset the entire infotainment system merely because one projection preference is missing; a full reset can remove radio presets, seat profiles, and other unrelated settings.

Accessibility and display choices

Apple lists accessibility and display settings among the categories that can transfer through Move to iOS. Verify them on the iPhone after migration, because transfer support does not guarantee that a vehicle’s CarPlay interface will reproduce every phone-level choice. Adjust the vehicle’s screen brightness, text size, and contrast separately if those controls exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the switch by isolating the failed link

The iPhone charges but CarPlay does not appear

  • Try the USB port identified for CarPlay; a charging-only port will not carry projection data.
  • Use a known data-capable cable that matches both the iPhone and vehicle connectors.
  • Unlock the iPhone, accept the CarPlay permission prompt, and confirm Siri is enabled.
  • Open the vehicle’s projection menu and select the CarPlay logo manually.
  • Check that the exact vehicle edition supports wired CarPlay. Compatibility can vary within a model line.

Wireless pairing stops halfway

  • Put the vehicle back into its explicit wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode.
  • Keep iPhone Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Open the Wi-Fi details for the CarPlay network and enable Auto-Join.
  • Remove a stale vehicle entry from Settings > General > CarPlay only if the vehicle manual recommends re-pairing, then repeat the pairing flow.
  • Test with the Android phone disconnected so the vehicle does not select the old projection session.

The CarPlay option is missing entirely

Recheck compatibility for the exact vehicle and stereo. If the manual lists only Android Auto, an iPhone setting cannot add CarPlay. If the manual lists CarPlay but the menu is absent, look for an infotainment software update or manufacturer-specific activation procedure rather than buying a random adapter.

CarPlay connects, but an app or favorite is missing

Confirm that the app is installed on the iPhone, signed in, updated, and permitted to use CarPlay. A phone migration can move the app icon without moving locally stored data. Contact the app developer for account or data-transfer instructions when its content does not synchronize.

The car remembers the Android phone

Use the vehicle’s device-management screen to choose the iPhone or remove the old Android pairing if the manual permits it. Whether both phones can remain paired, which device wins, and whether Android Auto and CarPlay can be enabled simultaneously are not standardized facts; they must be verified for the individual vehicle.

What you should not assume

  • “My contacts transferred, so Android Auto transferred too.” Personal data migration and projection configuration are separate processes.
  • “Every app preference will be restored.” Apple’s migration list is specific; unsupported app data and local preferences may require the developer’s method.
  • “A new cable is always required.” Replace the cable only when the connector or data capability is incompatible. Wireless CarPlay does not need a cable for normal operation.
  • “Any USB socket will work.” Vehicles often designate one port for smartphone projection.
  • “Android Auto compatibility guarantees CarPlay.” The systems have separate compatibility requirements.
  • “The iPhone will always become the primary phone.” Projection priority and simultaneous-pairing behavior vary by vehicle.

A final verification checklist

  1. Contacts, messages, photos, calendars, and other selected migration categories are visible on the iPhone.
  2. Important accounts, two-factor authentication, and app-specific data work before the Android phone is wiped.
  3. The vehicle’s exact CarPlay compatibility and supported connection mode are confirmed.
  4. Siri, iPhone Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (for wireless use), and the correct USB port (for wired use) are ready.
  5. CarPlay opens from the vehicle display and the iPhone appears in the vehicle’s device list.
  6. Navigation, music, messaging, and calling apps show the expected accounts and permissions.
  7. The vehicle’s phone-priority setting selects the iPhone when both phones are present.
  8. Any missing favorite, notification rule, or vehicle preference has been recreated or deliberately left unchanged.

Bottom line

You can switch from Android Auto to Apple CarPlay without losing the personal data Apple’s migration process supports, but you should not expect Android Auto settings to transfer. Migrate and verify the iPhone’s content first, confirm the car’s exact CarPlay support, then pair by USB or the vehicle’s wireless procedure. Recreate app and vehicle preferences that are not restored, and use the car manual for pairing priority and menu labels that differ by model.
