Install the new browser, keep the old one open, and use the new browser’s built-in import tool before uninstalling anything. Import bookmarks and passwords as separate tasks, because browsers often support different routes for each. If direct password import is unavailable, use the target browser’s documented CSV workflow, then verify several important logins and bookmark folders before deleting the old profile.
What moves automatically—and what does not
A browser switch is a data migration, not a sign-in. Bookmarks, saved usernames and passwords, browsing history, extensions, autofill entries, payment methods, cookies and open tabs are separate categories. A browser may offer checkboxes for several of them, but support varies by source browser, target browser, operating system and profile.

Importing a saved password copies a credential into the new browser’s password manager. It does not guarantee that a website session remains active: cookies and other session data may not be imported. You should expect to sign in again to some sites, even when every saved username and password arrives correctly.
The safest order is:
- Identify the source browser, target browser, operating system and source profile.
- Install the target browser without removing the source browser.
- Run the target browser’s native import wizard.
- Use an HTML bookmark export or a CSV password export only when the direct route is unavailable.
- Check the imported data and test important logins.
- Configure the target browser’s own sync, if you need the data on other devices.
- Retire the old browser only after verification.
Prepare the old browser before importing
Identify the correct profile
Many browsers keep separate profiles for personal accounts, work accounts, family members or different identities. The importer may list profiles by name, email address or a generic profile number. Open the old browser’s profile switcher and determine which profile contains the bookmarks and saved credentials you actually use. If the target importer offers a profile selector, choose that matching profile rather than accepting the first one shown.

On a managed work computer, an administrator may disable password export, browser-data import or profile access. Do not bypass a company policy. Ask the administrator which approved migration method is permitted; managed credentials can have requirements that do not apply to a personal device.
Preserve open tabs you care about
If you want to keep a set of open pages, save them into a clearly named bookmark folder before migration. In Mozilla’s Chrome-to-Firefox guidance, saving important tabs as bookmarks is recommended because open-tab transfer is not guaranteed for every browser pair. A folder such as “Move to new browser” makes the pages easy to find after import.
Leave the source installation intact
Do not uninstall the old browser, delete its profile, clear its saved passwords or reset its settings while the transfer is in progress. Mozilla states that switching from Chrome to Firefox does not delete Chrome or change Chrome’s settings. Keeping the source profile gives you a recovery path if a profile was missed or an import is incomplete.

Open the new browser and look for a command named Import browser data, Import data from another browser or similar. Native import is preferable because it can read the source profile directly and avoids creating an export file for every category.
In the importer, select the source browser, the correct profile when prompted, and only the data categories you intend to move. A typical wizard may offer bookmarks or favorites, saved passwords, browsing history, autofill information, extensions and other settings. The available list is not a promise that every category will transfer successfully; the target browser determines what it can read.
Firefox migration wizard
Firefox’s importer lets you choose a source browser, profile and data categories. It may ask for your computer’s system password before it can access credentials protected by the operating system. That prompt is for local authorization; it is not an indication that you should type the old browser’s website password into a page.
Mozilla Support says Firefox does not save or sync login data from another browser unless you choose to import it. Select the password category explicitly when the wizard presents it, then wait for the import to finish before closing the source browser.

Edge browser-data import
Microsoft Edge provides an import-browser-data flow that can read data from another installed browser. For password files, its documented path is Settings > Profiles > Import browser data > Import passwords now. The labels can differ slightly by Edge release or organization policy, so use the Settings search box for “import” if the command is not immediately visible.
If the source browser is not listed
A missing source can mean that the browser is not installed, its profile is in a nonstandard location, the target browser cannot read that browser’s format, or a policy has disabled access. Do not assume that reinstalling will fix the problem. Move bookmarks with an HTML file and investigate the target browser’s current password-import instructions before exporting credentials.
Move bookmarks safely
Use direct browser import first
Run the target browser’s importer with the bookmarks or favorites option enabled. After completion, open the bookmarks menu or library rather than assuming the items were merged into your usual toolbar. Imported items often arrive in a separate folder.
Edge says imported favorites can appear in a folder on the Favorites bar, possibly named “Imported.” Chrome documentation notes that imported bookmarks can appear in “Other bookmarks” or on the bookmarks bar depending on the existing data. Expand those locations and search for a distinctive title from the old browser.

Export bookmarks to an HTML file when direct import fails
HTML is the most portable fallback for bookmarks. In the old browser, use its bookmark or favorites manager and choose the command to export bookmarks. Chrome’s official help describes exporting bookmarks as an HTML file. Save the file in a private local folder with a name that identifies the source and date, such as old-browser-bookmarks.html.
In the new browser, open its bookmark manager or library and choose the command to import bookmarks from an HTML file. Firefox and Edge document HTML bookmark import. Select the saved file, wait for the import to complete, then locate the resulting folder before reorganizing anything.
An HTML bookmark file normally contains links and folder structure, not your saved passwords. It is therefore suitable for bookmark transfer, but it cannot replace a password export.

Check the result instead of counting on a visual merge
- Open the imported folder and compare several high-value links: your email provider, bank or payment site, work portal and frequently used reference pages.
- Check nested folders, because a large collection can import intact but be placed under a new top-level folder.
- Look for duplicate folders before deleting anything from the old browser. Keep the original until you know which copy is complete.
- Open a few links to confirm that the URL is correct and that a redirect has not replaced the page you intended to save.
Move saved passwords
Try the target browser’s password importer
If the native importer offers saved passwords, select that category and the matching source profile. The target browser may request your computer account password or another local authorization step before reading the source password store. Complete that prompt on the computer itself and allow the wizard to finish.
Direct password transfer is platform- and browser-dependent. A route that works on one operating system may be unavailable on another, and a browser update can change which source formats it accepts. Never infer that a successful bookmark import means passwords were imported too; check the target password manager separately.
Chrome to Firefox on Windows or Linux: use CSV
Mozilla’s current documentation says Chrome passwords can no longer be imported automatically into Firefox on Windows or Linux. For this route, export the credentials from Google Password Manager as a CSV file, then use Firefox’s migration wizard to import that file.
Mozilla describes the interface change as beginning with Firefox 139 in English locales and Firefox 140 in all locales. The practical implication is that Firefox 140 and later, and affected Firefox 139 English-language installations, should be handled with the CSV method rather than relying on automatic Chrome password access.
The same Mozilla documentation says Chrome payment methods can no longer be imported from Chrome on Windows to Firefox because of a Chrome encryption change. Do not treat a successful password import as evidence that payment cards moved; check payment information separately and follow the target browser’s supported method.

Edge documents CSV password import at Settings > Profiles > Import browser data > Import passwords now. Choose the CSV option, select the file exported from the source password manager and confirm the import. If the option is hidden, an administrator may have disabled password import.
When no CSV option exists
CSV support is not universal across browser pairs. If the target browser does not document CSV import, do not rename the file, edit its columns or upload it to an unknown conversion service in the hope that it will work. Consult the target browser’s current help page for the exact pair and operating system. Manual entry may be slower, but it avoids handing an unprotected credential file to a tool that you cannot evaluate.

Handle a password CSV as a sensitive credential copy
A password CSV is usually readable as plain text. Anyone who obtains it may be able to see account names, usernames and passwords. Treat the export as a temporary secret, not as a backup to leave in Downloads.
- Export only on a device you control, and save the file in a private local folder.
- Do not email the CSV, attach it to a chat, put it in a shared folder or upload it to an unfamiliar conversion website.
- Import it into the target browser and confirm that the expected accounts are present.
- Test several important sign-ins by entering the credentials from the target browser’s password manager.
- Delete the CSV after successful verification.
- Empty the operating system’s trash or recycle location if the deleted file remains there.
Removing the CSV does not remove passwords already imported into the target browser. If you keep a separate encrypted backup for a legitimate reason, document where it is stored and who can access it; otherwise, do not create extra copies.
Verify the migration before retiring the old browser
Check bookmarks and folders
Open the target browser’s bookmark manager and inspect every important top-level folder. Test a representative sample of links, including at least one link from each large folder and any page you cannot easily find again. If a folder is missing, return to the source browser and repeat the HTML export rather than deleting the original data.
Check passwords and sign-ins
Search the target password manager for the accounts you use most. Confirm that the website address, username and password are present. Sign in to a few important services in a private window or after signing out, so you test the stored credential rather than an existing cookie. Expect some websites to require a new sign-in, an email verification or multi-factor authentication.
Check what was not promised
Do not assume that extensions, browsing history, autofill addresses, payment methods, cookies or open tabs transferred merely because bookmarks did. Review each category that matters to you and use a separate supported method when the importer did not include it. Password import sources document saved credentials; they do not guarantee transfer of active website sessions.
Keep the source profile for a recovery period
Continue using the old browser only as a reference while you discover omissions. Once the new browser contains the required bookmarks and credentials and important sites work, you can uninstall the old browser or remove its profile according to your privacy and storage needs. Until then, deleting it removes your easiest way to recover a missed item.
Set up sync after the one-time transfer
Importing moves data once. It does not keep two different browsers synchronized, and it does not automatically place the new browser’s data on your other devices.
Best Value
If you want the target browser on additional devices, enable that browser’s own sync after the import and review what it will synchronize. Firefox Sync, for example, can synchronize bookmarks and saved passwords across Firefox devices through a Mozilla account. That is a Firefox-to-Firefox feature, not a mechanism for keeping Firefox and another browser’s profiles synchronized.
Before enabling sync on a shared or managed device, confirm which account will receive the data and whether organizational policy permits it. Sync can replicate an accidental deletion or an incorrect import, so verify the primary device first.
Choose the right migration route
| Situation | Preferred route | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| The source browser is installed and appears in the target importer | Native browser-data import; select the correct profile and categories | Supported categories differ by browser, operating system and version |
| Bookmarks import directly but a folder is missing | Export bookmarks as HTML, then import the HTML file | Bookmarks move; saved passwords do not |
| Chrome passwords are moving to Firefox on Windows or Linux | Export from Google Password Manager as CSV, then use Firefox’s migration wizard | Automatic password import is no longer available for this route; payment methods have a separate limitation on Windows |
| Passwords are moving into Edge from a CSV file | Settings > Profiles > Import browser data > Import passwords now | CSV support and administrative permissions can vary |
| The target browser has no documented password route | Check its current help documentation; enter essential credentials manually if necessary | Do not assume that renaming or converting a CSV will be safe |
| You need the data on several devices after switching | Enable the target browser’s own sync after verification | Sync is not cross-browser migration and may replicate mistakes |
Troubleshooting common failures
The importer finds the wrong bookmarks
Return to the source browser and check its active profile. If several profiles exist, repeat the import with the matching one. You can also export bookmarks from that profile to HTML and import the file, which makes the source explicit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBookmarks arrived, but passwords did not
Open the target password manager and confirm that the password category was selected. If the browser pair does not support direct transfer, use the documented CSV route. For Chrome-to-Firefox on Windows or Linux, use Google Password Manager CSV export rather than repeating an automatic import that Firefox no longer supports.
The CSV import button is missing
Check that you are using the target browser’s password settings, not its general bookmark importer. Search Settings for “password import” or “import browser data.” A managed device may hide the command, or the browser version may not support CSV import for that source. Do not disable security controls to reveal it.
The imported folder is not on the bookmarks bar
Open the full bookmarks library and inspect folders named “Imported,” “Other bookmarks” or a similarly labeled location. Browsers commonly preserve the imported hierarchy rather than merging every item into the visible bar.
A site rejects the imported password
Check the saved username, the website address and whether the site has more than one login entry. Try the credential directly from the target password manager after signing out. If the site uses a passkey, one-time code or multi-factor approval, a password import cannot reproduce that separate authentication method.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Stop using the target browser for destructive cleanup. Check whether the old profile is still present in the operating system’s profile directory or recover it from an existing backup. If no source profile or export remains, the browser vendor may not be able to reconstruct missing credentials.
Quick Recap
A concise completion checklist
- The target browser is installed and the source browser remains available.
- The correct source profile was selected.
- Important bookmarks appear in the target library and their links open.
- The target password manager contains expected accounts.
- Several important sign-ins were tested, including multi-factor prompts where applicable.
- Payment methods, extensions, history and autofill were checked separately if needed.
- Any CSV file was deleted and the trash or recycle location was emptied.
- The target browser’s sync was configured only after local verification.
- The old profile will be removed only after the transfer is complete.
