Keep one YouTube livestream running and switch between prepared scenes in OBS Studio: use a worship scene for music, lyrics, or the worship team, then transition to a sermon scene with the preacher’s camera and audio. The scene changes happen in OBS, so they do not require ending the YouTube broadcast. Test the full setup before the service, and confirm that the church has the rights needed for any music or recordings it streams.
How the switch works
YouTube receives a single continuous feed from an encoder such as OBS Studio. OBS scenes determine what viewers see and hear in that feed. Prepare one scene for worship and another for the sermon, then cut or fade between them at the appropriate cues while leaving the stream connected.

A worship scene might show a still image or lyrics slide with a rights-cleared music recording, or show the worship team performing live. The sermon scene might show the preacher’s camera and the sermon audio feed. These are possible layouts, not requirements; choose sources that match your church’s equipment and service.

Set up YouTube Live and OBS before the service
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is compromised. See YouTube’s stream setup instructions.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube if it is offered, or enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow says to click Go live once the preview appears. Follow the controls shown for the selected broadcast.
- Create clearly named scenes. In OBS, add at least two scenes named Worship and Sermon. A scene is a collection of sources. OBS supports sources such as media, audio, image, text, and video capture; a capture card may be needed to bring in a compatible camera or switcher feed. The installed OBS version may have different menu details; consult the OBS Studio Overview Guide and Sources Guide.
- Build each scene deliberately. For pre-recorded worship music, add a media source and check that it plays through the OBS program output. Add an image or text source for a title, lyrics, or service information if needed. For live worship, add the appropriate camera or capture source. In the sermon scene, add the preacher’s camera and the sermon audio feed. Label audio sources clearly and keep the signal path understandable, especially if audio comes from a mixer or interface.
- Choose and rehearse a transition. Set a simple cut or fade and choose a duration that suits the service. Optional scene-switch hotkeys can make cues repeatable, but assign and test them so a stray keystroke does not put the wrong scene on air. OBS Studio Mode lets the operator preview a scene before using Transition to put it live. Rehearse the actual service order with the person operating OBS.
- Run a complete test. Before the service, check the YouTube preview, picture, music, speech, and transitions. Confirm the event is reachable from the channel and watch pages, and test with audio and video similar to what the service will use. Monitor quality during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and matching bitrate to the connection and resolution; use its current live encoder settings and streaming tips, since recommendations and interface details can change.
Switch scenes during the service
- Start the encoder and confirm that the expected preview appears in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, use YouTube’s Go live control when the preview is ready.
- At the worship cue, select the Worship scene or use its rehearsed hotkey. If the scene uses a media source, confirm the music is actually playing and audible in the program output before taking it live.
- At the sermon cue, transition to Sermon. Check that the camera is framed correctly and speech is audible. Keep the YouTube broadcast connected; only the encoder’s scene changes.
- When the service is finished, end the stream using the Live Control Room and encoder controls. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the archive and any local recording after the service if the church relies on them.
Check music rights before streaming
Confirm rights for the specific songs and recordings, territories, and intended live and archived uses. Whether a particular church licence covers a particular use depends on that licence; do not assume that permission to perform or play a song in person automatically covers a YouTube stream.

Whether you want a subtle studio echo or a dramatic live‑stage sound, the dedicated reverb control lets you fine‑tune it on the fly – no software needed.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies content, it may warn the streamer to stop using it; if it continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when the church has licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check directly with the rights owner and review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams before the service.
Equipment: use what fits the signal path
The setup can be software-only if compatible video and audio already reach the computer running OBS. If a camera or switcher needs to connect to that computer, a video capture card may be appropriate. Match it to the device’s output, the computer’s ports and operating system, and the required resolution and frame rate; not every church needs one.

A camera, separate audio interface, or hardware encoder may also be useful depending on the existing setup. YouTube describes encoder workflows that can include cameras and preamps and suggests professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, while noting that getting started need not require expensive equipment. Choose based on the actual inputs, operator experience, bandwidth, and production needs rather than buying a particular brand or model by default.
Troubleshoot common scene-switching problems
- The YouTube broadcast ends when scenes change: Scene switching belongs in OBS. Keep the same encoder session connected to the broadcast and change the active scene, rather than stopping and restarting the stream for each segment.
- The worship slide appears but the music is silent: Check that the media source is playing, that its audio is routed to OBS’s program output, and that the relevant mixer level is not muted. Confirm audibility in the YouTube preview before the service cue.
- The preacher appears but speech is missing or too quiet: Check the camera/capture source and the sermon audio path separately. Verify the mixer or interface output, OBS source selection, and levels; test speech at service-like volume before going live.
- A scene shows the wrong camera or layout: Preview it in Studio Mode before transitioning. Check source visibility and ordering in the scene, then rehearse the cue and hotkey with the operator.
- YouTube warns about music or interrupts the stream: Stop the flagged content if prompted. Verify the permissions for that exact recording and use, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting if it is licensed. A licence does not guarantee that YouTube’s systems will recognize the channel as authorized without that step.
- Video or audio quality is unstable: Check the upload connection and encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen resolution. Test under conditions similar to the service and monitor the preview; do not assume that a setting suitable for one connection or resolution will suit another.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded sermons or worship videos playing continuously on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera or a replacement for switching OBS scenes during a live service.
