On the desktop Steam client, open Steam > Settings (called Preferences on macOS), select Interface, and use Client Beta Participation. Choose Steam Beta Update to join the pre-release channel or No beta chosen to return to the stable channel, then select Restart Now. Steam does not apply the channel change until it restarts.
Steam Deck and Big Picture Mode put the equivalent controls in their System menus. If the desktop control is missing or Steam keeps returning to beta, Valve documents the -clearbeta launch option as a fallback for opting out and returning to the current official release.

What changes when you switch channels
Steam’s client channels are two release tracks for the Steam application itself. The stable track is the normal official release. The beta track is a pre-release channel that lets participants use new features before they are released generally. Switching channels changes the Steam client, not the games installed in your library.

| No beta chosen | Current official release | Regular day-to-day Steam use | Steam must restart after you select it |
| Steam Beta Update | Pre-release client channel | Trying features before general release or checking whether a client issue is channel-specific | Steam must restart after you select it |
Valve describes opting into the Steam Client Beta as a way to use the latest features before they are released. It does not publish a fixed update timetable, guaranteed feature list, download size, or reliability percentage for the channel, so those are not useful promises to attach to the choice.

A channel switch is reversible. You can move from stable to beta, or from beta back to stable, whenever the relevant control is available. The important operational detail is the restart: selecting a menu item changes the preference, while restarting loads the client on the selected track.
Switch the desktop client on Windows, Linux, or macOS
The desktop procedure is the same on Windows and Linux. On macOS, Steam labels the first menu item Preferences rather than Settings; the remaining labels are generally the same.
Join the Steam beta client
- Start the desktop Steam application and wait for the main window to finish loading.
- Open the top-left Steam menu. Choose Settings on Windows or Linux, or Preferences on macOS.
- Select the Interface tab in the settings window.
- Find Client Beta Participation and open its drop-down menu.
- Choose Steam Beta Update.
- Select Restart Now when Steam prompts you. Allow the application to close and reopen; closing only the settings window is not enough.
After the restart, Steam is running on the beta client channel. If the prompt is dismissed instead of accepted, the preference may be selected but the running process has not changed channel yet. Restart Steam manually before judging whether the switch worked.
Return to the stable client
- Open Steam > Settings, or Steam > Preferences on macOS.
- Open Interface and locate Client Beta Participation.
- Set the drop-down to No beta chosen.
- Choose Restart Now, or quit and relaunch Steam if you dismissed the prompt.
No beta chosen is Valve’s desktop label for opting out of the client beta. It does not uninstall Steam or remove games. It tells the client to use the current normal release after the required restart.
Check that the switch actually happened
Do not rely solely on the setting remaining visible. First, confirm that Steam has completed the restart and that the main window is usable again. Then reopen the same settings page and check the selected value. If Steam still behaves as though it is on the previous channel, repeat the restart; if the selection will not persist, use the fallback procedure below.

Steam Deck: change the client channel from the Steam interface
Steam Deck exposes beta participation separately from the desktop client’s Interface tab. The relevant control is in the Deck’s system settings.
- Press the physical Steam button.
- Choose Settings, then open System.
- Go to Beta Participation.
- Expand System Update Channel.
- Select Beta when you want the beta system channel, then follow the restart prompt.
This path concerns the Steam Deck surface and its system update channel. It is not the same desktop navigation as Steam > Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation. If you are trying to change the channel on a Windows, Linux, or Mac computer, use the desktop steps instead.

Big Picture Mode: use the System beta controls
Big Picture Mode places the client beta setting under its own System menu.
- Open Settings in Big Picture Mode.
- Select System, then Beta Participation.
- Expand Steam Client Update Channel.
- Choose Steam Beta Update to opt in.
- Accept the restart prompt and wait for Steam to reopen.
When returning from beta in Big Picture Mode, use the same Steam Client Update Channel control and select the normal, non-beta choice offered by the interface, then restart. The wording can differ slightly between Steam surfaces, but the sequence is always to select a channel and restart the client.
Why you might not see Client Beta Participation
Steam’s labels and locations are not identical in every client surface. The dedicated Steam Client Beta instructions put the desktop control in Settings > Interface. A separate Valve troubleshooting page shows a path under Account > Beta participation > Change, followed by Steam Beta Update. That alternate path may represent a different client surface or an older label.

- Open the account-related settings area and look for Beta participation or Change if your build uses the alternate layout.
- If you are in Big Picture Mode or on Steam Deck, use the System paths described above rather than searching the desktop Interface tab.
- Restart Steam once, then check the menus again. A partially updated or unusual client surface can show different labels until it has relaunched.
Do not interpret a missing label as proof that beta participation has been removed. First identify which Steam surface you are using and search its corresponding settings area.
Use -clearbeta when Steam will not leave beta
Valve documents -clearbeta as a launch option that opts out of a Steam client public beta and returns Steam to the current official release. It is a software fallback for the client channel; it is not a hardware repair and does not fix a damaged computer or Steam Deck.
Add the option to a desktop shortcut
- Close Steam completely. If the application is still running in the notification area or menu bar, use Steam’s exit command so the process is no longer active.
- Open the properties for the shortcut you use to start Steam.
- Find the shortcut field named Target (or the equivalent command field on your desktop environment).
- Leave the existing Steam executable path unchanged. Add a space after the closing quotation mark, then append
-clearbeta. The option must be outside the quotation marks around the executable path. - Apply the change and launch Steam from that shortcut.
- Wait for Steam to open and finish its update or restart activity. After it has returned to the normal release, remove
-clearbetafrom the shortcut so future launches use the ordinary command.
The exact shortcut-property dialog differs by operating system, but the principle is the same: append the documented option to Steam’s launch command, start Steam once, and then restore the shortcut to its original command. If you leave the option in place permanently, every launch will continue to request the beta-clearing behavior, which is unnecessary after the channel has been reset.
When this fallback is appropriate
- The desktop menu says you opted out, but Steam repeatedly starts as a beta client after a restart.
- The settings page is unavailable or cannot retain the selection.
- You need to force a return to the current official release before continuing troubleshooting.
If Steam is already on the stable channel and working normally, there is no benefit to adding the option. Use the regular No beta chosen control whenever it is available.

Troubleshoot a channel switch methodically
Steam did not restart
Changing the drop-down alone does not load the new client. Select Restart Now. If you dismissed the prompt, exit Steam fully and start it again. Check the setting only after the new process has opened.
The selection keeps reverting
Return to Client Beta Participation, select No beta chosen, and restart. If the preference still does not hold, close Steam completely and use -clearbeta once from a shortcut. Remove the option after Steam has returned to the official release.
The beta choice is present but the problem remains
A channel switch is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that a particular game or account issue will disappear. Reproduce the problem after the restart on the selected channel, recording what you did and what Steam displayed. Then repeat the same test on the other channel. Valve specifically advises participants in Steam beta programs to test both beta and normal versions when troubleshooting an issue. Keeping the test steps identical makes the comparison meaningful.
You are using the wrong menu for the device
On a desktop computer, use Settings or Preferences, then Interface. On Steam Deck, use Settings > System > Beta Participation > System Update Channel. In Big Picture Mode, use Settings > System > Beta Participation > Steam Client Update Channel. A control found in one surface will not necessarily appear in another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou cannot tell which channel is active
Use the settings page as the primary check, confirm that Steam has restarted, and note whether the selected label is Steam Beta Update or No beta chosen. Do not infer the channel from a game’s behavior alone; game updates and client-channel changes are separate events.
Best Value
Which channel should you use?
Choose stable for routine use
Select No beta chosen when you want Steam on the current official release and do not need to evaluate pre-release client changes. This is the straightforward choice for a computer used primarily to launch and manage games, provided you are not investigating a problem that requires a channel comparison.
Choose beta for early feature access or testing
Select Steam Beta Update when you deliberately want to try client features before their general release or when you are helping determine whether a Steam problem is specific to one release track. Treat the restart as part of the change, not an optional confirmation.
Use both channels for troubleshooting
If support guidance asks whether a problem occurs on beta, reproduce it on beta after restarting. Then switch to No beta chosen, restart again, and repeat the same steps. This two-channel test can show whether the behavior follows the client channel, but it cannot by itself identify every possible cause.
A compact switching checklist
- Desktop join: Steam menu > Settings/Preferences > Interface > Client Beta Participation > Steam Beta Update > Restart Now.
- Desktop return: the same path, choose No beta chosen, then restart.
- Steam Deck: Steam button > Settings > System > Beta Participation > System Update Channel > Beta, then restart.
- Big Picture: Settings > System > Beta Participation > Steam Client Update Channel, choose the desired channel, then restart.
- Fallback: append
-clearbetato Steam’s shortcut target, launch once, and remove the option afterward. - Diagnosis: test the same problem on both beta and normal Steam versions after each required restart.
The channel selector controls Steam’s client release track. Select the track that matches your purpose, complete the restart, and use Valve’s -clearbeta fallback only when the normal opt-out path cannot return the client to the official release.
