To switch one Steam game from Proton Experimental to a stable Proton build, open the game’s Properties, select Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and choose an installed numbered release such as Proton 11.0. Close the window, let Steam install that tool if necessary, and launch the game again. This is a per-game change; you do not need to uninstall Proton Experimental.
What changes when you leave Proton Experimental?
Proton is the compatibility layer Steam uses to run many Windows games on Linux. Steam lets you select the Proton build separately for each game, so a regression in one title can be investigated without changing every other game in your library.

Valve describes the numbered Proton releases as the stable flavor. They pass Valve’s quality-assurance process and a public release-candidate phase before release. Proton Experimental is a public-testing branch for newer or experimental changes, so it can contain code that has not yet reached a numbered stable release. That makes Experimental useful for testing fixes, but it also means an update can make a particular game stop launching or introduce a new defect.

Changing the compatibility tool is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee. A stable build can solve an Experimental regression for one game while doing nothing, or performing worse, for another.

Before changing the setting
- Identify the affected game. The setting is normally applied to an individual game’s Properties window.
- Check which numbered Proton builds are installed. You can select an installed version immediately; Steam can also download a selected tool when it is not present.
- Record the current setting. If you may need to undo the test, note whether the game was using Proton Experimental, a numbered build, or the default Steam Play choice.
- Protect important local data. The available material does not establish identical save, prefix, or configuration behavior for every game and Proton combination. If a game has valuable local saves, back them up using the game’s own export or backup method, Steam Cloud where applicable, or a separate copy before troubleshooting.
No physical product is required. Proton is software selected and delivered through Steam.
Switch a single game to stable Proton in Steam
- Open Steam Library. Find the game that is failing or behaving differently after an Experimental update.
- Open the game’s Properties. Use the game’s context menu or its Properties button. Steam client layouts can place this command in different locations.
- Select Compatibility. This page contains the per-game Steam Play compatibility-tool setting.
- Enable the forced-tool option. Turn on Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool if it is not already enabled. Some clients use slightly different wording, but the control has the same purpose: it overrides the automatic choice for this title.
- Choose a numbered Proton release. Select an installed stable entry, for example Proton 11.0. Do not select Proton Experimental if your goal is to leave the current Experimental behavior behind.
- Close Properties. Steam saves the per-game selection when you close the window.
- Allow installation to finish. If the selected Proton build is not installed, Steam will download and install it. Wait for that process to complete before starting the game.
- Launch and test the game. Reproduce the original problem: start-up, loading, the affected level or feature, and any other action that failed under Experimental. A successful launch alone may not prove that the original issue is gone.
If the game still fails, keep the same setting while checking the exact symptom, then test another available numbered release. Proton behavior is title-specific, so the newest numbered build is not automatically the right one.
Finding the compatibility control in different Steam layouts
Steam’s desktop and handheld interfaces change over time, and menu labels may move. The reliable path is always the affected game’s own Properties page followed by Compatibility. Look for a checkbox or selector referring to forcing a specific Steam Play or compatibility tool. If you do not see it immediately, enlarge the Properties window, scroll the Compatibility page, or check that you opened the game Properties rather than Proton’s own library entry.
Valve’s Proton version guidance also describes opening the Proton Experimental entry in the Steam Library and using its Properties to reach version or beta controls. That is useful when you are managing the Proton tool itself, but it is different from selecting a tool for one game. For a game-specific rollback, make the change in that game’s Properties.

Which numbered Proton version should you choose?
There is no universal “best” stable version. Compare builds by the behavior of the affected game, not only by their version numbers.

For example, a June 23, 2026 Valve issue report describes affected games being switched to Proton 9.0 as a workaround for one Experimental update failure. That report documents a particular incident; it does not establish Proton 9.0 as the correct choice for current games generally. Likewise, a Valve issue opened October 23, 2024 about media-source changes listed affected games and recommended a stable release or an alternate branch for those cases. Use such reports to identify a candidate version, then test the title on your own system.
If the numbered version is not installed
A version can appear in the selector without being ready to run. After you choose it and close Properties, Steam may show a download or installation task. Let that task finish, and confirm that Steam is not paused or offline. Reopen the game’s Compatibility page if the selector reverts before the installation completes.
If a particular version is not offered at all, choose another installed numbered release rather than assuming that a missing entry can be recreated from the game folder. Steam supplies Proton versions through its client, and the set of available entries can change as Valve publishes or retires builds.

How to test the rollback without creating confusion
Change one variable
Do not switch several Proton builds, alter launch options, and delete game data simultaneously. Start with one numbered version, then test the same failure path. This makes it possible to tell whether the compatibility-tool change mattered.
Use a repeatable test
Write down what happened under Experimental: whether the game failed before its window appeared, crashed during loading, or broke only when a particular feature was used. Repeat that action after switching versions. “It launched once” and “the original problem is fixed” are different results.
Allow first-run work to complete
A newly selected Proton build may perform setup work before the game reaches its main menu. Wait for Steam’s installation and the game’s initial startup process to finish before judging the version.

If the first numbered release does not help, select another available numbered build and repeat the same test. Keep notes of the version and result so you can return to the best-known configuration.

Common problems and the appropriate response
The game still fails after switching to stable
The Experimental branch may not be the cause, or the regression may also exist in the numbered build you selected. Try another installed numbered release. If none changes the symptom, return to the game’s prior setting and consult the title’s current issue reports rather than repeatedly changing versions at random.
The game launches but the original feature is broken
Treat this as an incomplete fix. Test the exact feature that failed, not only the title screen. If another numbered release restores it, record that version as the working choice for this game.
Steam keeps using Experimental
Reopen the game’s Properties and verify that the force-specific-tool option is enabled and that the selector shows the numbered release. A global Steam Play preference does not necessarily override a per-game setting, and a per-game selection can be changed independently.

Use another numbered entry that Steam currently offers. The documented procedure depends on versions supplied by Steam; it does not require manually copying Proton files into the game directory.
You changed the wrong Properties window
Proton Experimental itself appears as a library item with its own Properties. That window controls the tool’s version or beta settings. To change one game’s runtime, open the Properties for the game that is failing.
Per-game change versus a global default
The procedure above affects only the selected title. That is the safer choice when one game regressed and others continue to work. Do not uninstall Proton Experimental or alter a global Steam Play default merely to repair one game; doing so changes the environment for every title that inherits that default and removes a useful comparison point.
A global change is appropriate only when your goal is deliberately to change how multiple games behave. Even then, review important games individually afterward, because compatibility results vary by title.
When returning to Experimental makes sense
Switching back is reversible. In the same game’s Properties > Compatibility page, leave the forced-tool setting enabled and select Proton Experimental again, or restore the prior automatic setting if that was the original configuration. You might do this when a newer Experimental fix is needed, when a stable release lacks support for a game update, or when testing confirms that the stable build is the source of the problem.
Record the version that works before changing it again. A short note containing the game, Proton version, date, and symptom gives you a reproducible rollback path if a later Steam or Proton update changes the result.
What Valve’s release labels do—and do not—promise
“Stable” describes the release channel, not a guarantee that every game will work. Valve’s numbered builds go through a release process, while Experimental exposes changes for public testing. Neither label predicts the outcome for every engine, launcher, or game update.
Valve’s issue reports demonstrate both sides of that distinction: Experimental updates can cause regressions in specific games, and a numbered release can be a valid workaround in those incidents. They do not turn a single workaround into a universal recommendation. Choose a version, test the affected behavior, and keep the working per-game setting until a later update gives you a reason to revisit it.
