First identify the test track and platform you are using: Java Edition snapshots are changed in the Minecraft Launcher, Android Beta is managed from the Minecraft page in Google Play and replaces the normal client, and Minecraft Preview on other Bedrock platforms is usually a separate app. Use the matching procedure below; the wrong path can leave you looking for controls that do not exist.
Choose the correct rollback path
Minecraft has several development channels that are often called a “preview,” but they do not work the same way. Your edition, operating system and distribution method determine how you return to a stable release.

Platform availability and menu wording can change. The Java and Bedrock comparison guidance from Minecraft, dated October 25, 2021, describes these channels, while newer platform help pages should take precedence when their instructions differ.
Protect your worlds before changing tracks
Make a backup before opening an important world in any development build or attempting a rollback. Minecraft specifically warns Java players to back up worlds before using snapshots because snapshots can corrupt a world. Its Android Beta guidance also recommends a backup because Beta replaces the normal client.

What counts as a backup
- Use the game’s own world export or backup facility when available, and keep the resulting copy somewhere separate from the game installation.
- For Java, copy the world folder while Minecraft is closed, or use the Launcher and operating-system backup tools you already trust.
- For Bedrock, retain a manual or automatic backup from before the test build changed the world. Minecraft Help says a prior backup can restore a world to its saved point.
A seed is not a save backup
Recreating a Bedrock world from its seed can produce a familiar map, but it does not restore buildings, inventory, achievements, or other progress. If a world matters, preserve a backup rather than relying on its seed.
Do not overwrite the only copy
Keep the original backup untouched until you have opened the stable release and confirmed that the world, player data and add-ons behave as expected. If the stable client offers to convert or update a world, stop and verify that you are working on a duplicate first.

Java snapshots are selected through the Minecraft Launcher. You do not need to remove the Launcher or buy anything to return to a release build.
- Close any running Minecraft instance.
- Open Minecraft Launcher and select the Java Edition section if the Launcher presents multiple editions.
- Open Installations. The exact button names or layout can vary between Launcher revisions.
- Find the installation you used for the snapshot and open its version selector or edit screen.
- Choose the newest entry labeled as a regular release, not an entry labeled snapshot, experimental or otherwise development-only. If you prefer, create a separate installation whose version is the latest release.
- Save the installation, return to the Play screen and launch that release profile.
If the release is not listed
Check that the Launcher is online and that you are looking at Java installations rather than a filtered list. Remove a snapshot filter if one is present, then reopen the version menu. Launcher labels can change, so look for the current stable release designation instead of relying on a particular button position.

Worlds created or opened in a snapshot
A snapshot world may contain changes that the stable release does not understand. Mojang’s guidance warns that snapshots can corrupt worlds, so do not test the rollback on your only copy. If the world fails to appear, reports errors or opens with missing data, close the game and restore the pre-snapshot backup rather than repeatedly loading and saving it.
Keeping snapshots without using them
You can leave the snapshot installation in the Launcher and keep a separate release installation. This is safer than repeatedly changing one profile because each profile can use its own version and game-directory settings. Always confirm the selected version on the Play screen before loading a valuable world.
Leave Minecraft Beta on Android
On Android, Beta is delivered through Google Play and replaces the normal Minecraft client. Leaving the program is therefore different from switching a Java installation: you change the enrollment on the store listing, then wait for Google Play to offer the ordinary build.
- Make or verify a world backup before leaving Beta. The mobile guidance recommends this step because the Beta client replaces the normal client.
- Open the Google Play Store on the Android device that is enrolled in Beta.
- Open the listing for Minecraft using the same Google account that joined the Beta.
- Scroll to the Beta-program area and repeat the enrollment controls shown there.
- Choose Leave, then confirm if Google Play asks you to do so.
- Return to the listing and install or update the regular Minecraft build when Google Play makes it available.
- Launch the ordinary Minecraft app and check the world list. If a world is missing or behaves unexpectedly, stop and use the backup rather than deleting local data.
Why the stable build may not appear immediately
The official mobile instructions do not promise a fixed delivery time after you leave Beta. Google Play may need to process the change before it offers the stable build. Do not assume that a particular number of minutes or hours guarantees the rollback. Keep the device connected, revisit the Minecraft listing later and use the store’s current update controls.

If Google Play still shows Beta
- Confirm that you are viewing the Minecraft listing under the Google account that enrolled in Beta.
- Reopen the listing after leaving and check whether the Beta section now shows that you are no longer participating.
- Do not uninstall the game as a first step if your only copy of a world is local. Verify the backup first.
- If the store’s wording or controls differ, follow the current Google Play prompts rather than an old screenshot or a Java Launcher instruction.
Open stable Minecraft instead of Preview on consoles and other Bedrock platforms
Minecraft Preview is an in-development Bedrock build. On supported platforms it is provided as a separate Preview app, while the ordinary Minecraft app remains the stable track. The practical switch is to launch the regular Minecraft app, not the Preview tile.
PlayStation and Xbox
Minecraft’s console guidance documents Preview installation on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It explains how to install Preview but does not provide one universal removal or exit procedure. To return to stable play:
Recommended Free Tools
- Leave the Preview app closed.
- From the console’s game library or home screen, select the ordinary Minecraft title rather than the title explicitly marked Preview.
- Sign in with the account that owns or normally uses the stable game, then check that the main menu and version information identify the regular client.
- Use the stable client for worlds, friends and Realms that are also on stable.
Do not delete the Preview app merely because you want to play stable Minecraft. The reviewed console guidance does not establish a universal uninstall rule or explain how deleting the app affects local data on every platform. If you want to remove Preview, consult the current instructions for your exact console model and account setup first.
Other supported Bedrock platforms
Where Preview is distributed separately, switch by opening the regular Minecraft application. If your platform combines test and stable builds in one distribution channel, use that platform’s current account or store controls; do not apply the Android Beta procedure unless the platform actually uses Google Play Beta enrollment.

Manage Minecraft Preview on iOS
The official mobile guidance identifies TestFlight as the distribution method for Minecraft Preview on iOS. TestFlight’s controls and Apple’s presentation can change, and the reviewed Minecraft pages do not establish a single current sequence for leaving or removing the build.
- Open TestFlight on the iPhone or iPad that received Preview.
- Open the Minecraft test entry and review the current controls for stopping testing, declining updates or removing the test build.
- Follow the wording TestFlight currently presents. Do not look for an Android-style Beta toggle inside Google Play or assume that an in-game Minecraft menu contains the opt-out.
- After leaving the test, check the App Store for the ordinary Minecraft app and verify your world backup before opening it.
If TestFlight does not show a control that matches your goal, avoid deleting the app until you know where the local world data is stored and have a separate backup. The exact exit action is not established by the cited Minecraft mobile page, so a platform-specific Apple prompt is more reliable than a generic Minecraft tutorial.

Returning to stable is also a compatibility decision. Minecraft Help says players must use the same Beta or Preview version to join one another. A player on stable cannot simply join a friend who remains on an incompatible development build.
Joining friends
- For ordinary stable multiplayer, launch the stable client and have everyone use the same stable release family.
- If a friend remains on Beta or Preview, you may need to wait until that player returns to stable or use a test environment where every participant is on the matching test version.
- Do not judge compatibility only by the device name; the build channel and version must match the requirements for that session.
Realms
Regular Realms are not playable on Preview or Beta. Eligible subscribers can create Preview or Beta Realms, but those are separate from ordinary stable Realms. After switching back, use the stable client for a regular Realm. If a Realm does not appear, confirm that you are signed into the expected account and that the Realm itself is on the same track as the client.

Recovering a world that does not appear or opens incorrectly
Bedrock world missing after leaving Beta or Preview
- Do not clear app storage or uninstall immediately.
- Confirm that you are using the same platform account and game profile as before.
- Check the world list in the stable client and verify that the backup exists outside the app.
- Use Minecraft’s documented backup restore path to return the world to its saved point.
- If no backup exists, a seed can recreate terrain but cannot restore your previous progress.
Java world fails after selecting a release
- Exit Minecraft without saving further changes.
- Confirm that the Launcher is using the intended release installation and game directory.
- Restore the copy made before the snapshot was used, then open that restored copy in the release build.
- Keep the damaged or converted copy separate so it cannot overwrite the recoverable backup.
Stable multiplayer still refuses a connection
Check the build channel on every device, not just the launcher or console shortcut. A Preview or Beta participant may still be launching the test app even after changing a store setting. Regular Realms require the stable track; a matching test build is not a substitute for a stable Realm session.

Why development builds can behave differently
Preview and Beta exist for work-in-progress features, and snapshots are likewise not release-quality builds. In its June 17, 2026 release notes for Minecraft Beta & Preview 26.40.26, Minecraft Feedback / Mojang Studios states: "These work-in-progress versions can be unstable and may not be representative of final version quality". That warning explains why a world, add-on, multiplayer connection or menu can behave differently after you change channels.
Switching to stable removes the test client from your normal play path, but it cannot guarantee that a world already altered by a development build will be perfectly reversible. The backup made before testing is the dependable recovery point.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Java on Windows, Mac or Linux: open Launcher > Installations and select the latest release profile.
- Android Beta: back up worlds, open the Minecraft Google Play listing, choose the Beta-area Leave control, then wait for the stable listing to become available.
- Preview on PlayStation, Xbox or another supported Bedrock platform: launch the ordinary Minecraft app; do not assume deleting Preview is required or universally safe.
- iOS Preview: use the current TestFlight controls; no single universal exit sequence is established by the cited Minecraft guidance.
- World protection: use a real backup, not just a seed, before changing builds.
- Multiplayer: match the build channel and version with friends and with the Realm you intend to use.
