There is no universal “correct” response to a random event in Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind. The reliable way to survive is to treat every crisis as a risk-management decision: identify what is threatened, choose a leader whose abilities and temperament fit the situation, protect the reserves your clan may need later, and remember that an apparently successful choice can postpone consequences rather than erase them. The game’s own manual frames the objective this way: “Your goal is to chart a course to survive in a hostile world, not simply defeat clan enemies.”
This guide turns that principle into a repeatable process for crises involving food, livestock, wealth, diplomacy, leaders, exploration, and combat. It also explains what the evidence cannot establish: there is no verified probability table or answer key for every scene, so no option should be presented as guaranteed.

What “random events” mean in Six Ages
The game usually presents unexpected developments as crises, situations, or stories, rather than as a single system called random events. They can test resources, relationships, leadership, or military strength. The App Store description specifically highlights crises ranging from marauding dinosaurs to diplomatic requests, while the Steam listing advertises more than 400 interactive story scenes supported by simulation systems. The “over 400” figure is a publisher storefront claim; it is not an independent count of probabilities or a promise that every scene is equally likely.

Each scene is part of a larger campaign. A decision may end the immediate problem, defer a cost, or trigger another event. The official manual does not provide a universal safe answer for all situations. It instead describes survival as managing a hostile world in which circumstances, leaders, preparation, and luck interact. That is why an option that looks sensible in isolation can be poor for a clan that is short on food, in the middle of agricultural work, or already carrying diplomatic tension.

Think of an event as a choice under incomplete information. You are not trying to discover a hidden button that always wins. You are trying to keep the clan capable of handling the next problem.
The five questions to ask before choosing
Pause long enough to classify the decision. The following sequence keeps an urgent-looking prompt from making you spend a resource or a season without noticing the trade-off.
- What is actually at stake? Identify whether the immediate risk is food, livestock, wealth, clan mood, diplomatic relations, a leader’s safety, combat losses, or a longer chain of events.
- Is the choice final or deferring the problem? Some responses resolve a situation; others postpone consequences or create further scenes. Read the wording for signs that you are buying time rather than ending the threat.
- What will the action consume? Account for an action advancing time, a possible loss of reserves, a leader being unavailable, or a change in relations. Do not evaluate an action only by its best immediate outcome.
- Who is the best person for this particular problem? Match the relevant ability and circumstances, then consider personality, luck, and the advice of the Circle.
- What failure can the clan absorb? If the downside would leave you unable to sow, reap, feed the clan, pay for a later response, or defend yourself, prefer a less exposed plan even if its upside is smaller.
This is a decision framework, not a guarantee. The manual explicitly allows for uncertainty, and the reviewed sources contain no independent study of event odds or success percentages.

The strongest response to a random event is often made several actions earlier. The manual identifies three broad reserves that help a clan handle both crises and opportunities: secure food, a reasonable level of livestock, and accumulated wealth. These are not merely victory points. They are the flexibility that lets you choose a response without putting the settlement into a new emergency.
Keep food ahead of the next obligation
Food shortages can turn a single bad outcome into a sequence of forced compromises. Keep enough supply to cover the next agricultural work and the possibility of an unexpected demand. A choice that costs food may be acceptable when stores are comfortable and reckless when the clan is already close to its limit. Because the game’s actions advance time, reassess food after every major event rather than assuming the previous estimate still applies.

Maintain livestock instead of treating every animal as spare wealth
Livestock is both a reserve and part of the clan’s productive capacity. Selling, sacrificing, or losing animals may solve an immediate problem while reducing the options available in later scenes. The manual’s advice is to maintain a reasonable level, not to maximize a single numerical target. In practice, ask whether the proposed response leaves the clan able to absorb another loss before the next chance to recover.
Build wealth for optionality
Wealth gives you room to respond to requests, recover from losses, and pursue opportunities. Spending everything to avoid one uncomfortable outcome can make the next event more dangerous. When a choice offers a benefit in exchange for wealth, compare the price with the value of retaining a reserve for an unknown future scene; the game does not reveal a complete schedule of what will happen next.

Not every cost appears in a storehouse. Record the state of clan mood, diplomatic relationships, and the safety or availability of important leaders. A response that protects livestock but damages a relationship may create a later situation with a different kind of cost. Treat these conditions as part of your reserve, even though they are harder to count than food or wealth.
Time and the agricultural cycle are resources
Every action advances time, and events can occur as time passes. This makes the calendar part of the decision, not background decoration. The manual specifically warns against raiding when the clan should be sowing or reaping. A profitable-looking action can therefore be a poor choice if it causes you to miss essential agricultural work or leaves too little time to respond to the next event.
Use a seasonal check before committing
- Identify the current agricultural task. If sowing or reaping is due, treat that obligation as a hard constraint unless the crisis itself makes it impossible.
- Estimate the time exposure. Ask how many actions the response consumes and what could occur during that interval.
- Separate urgent from merely attractive. An optional raid or opportunity may be less valuable than preserving the calendar for food production.
- Recalculate after the event. A delayed consequence can arrive in a different season, when the same cost is much harder to pay.
Time pressure also changes how you read a “wait” or “look for an opportunity” option in combat. Waiting can preserve strength, but it is not free if additional actions expose the clan to more events or interfere with agricultural work. The correct question is not whether waiting is brave or cowardly; it is whether the clan can afford the time it consumes.

Choose a leader for the situation, not the ranking
When the game asks you to appoint a leader, do not automatically select the first name because candidates are displayed by a relevant skill. The manual explicitly cautions that the highest shown skill may not be the wisest choice in special circumstances.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with the ability the situation actually calls for
Read the event’s demands before looking at the list of candidates. A combat crisis is not interchangeable with a diplomatic request, an exploration problem, or a resource decision. The relevant qualification should be your starting point, but not your only criterion.
Account for traits and luck
Personality and luck can affect outcomes alongside skills. A technically qualified leader may be a poor fit if the circumstances call for a different temperament or if sending that person creates a separate vulnerability. The sources do not provide a complete personality-to-event lookup table, so avoid turning a trait into a guaranteed prediction.
Use the Circle as input, not as an oracle
Advisors can help you notice an angle you missed, but they have their own agendas. Compare their recommendations with the stakes you identified and with the leader’s qualifications. If advisors disagree, that disagreement is information about the trade-off, not proof that one voice has access to a hidden answer.
A practical leader-selection checklist
- Which ability is most directly relevant?
- Does the leader’s temperament fit the requested approach?
- Will sending this person create a separate leadership or safety problem?
- Do the Circle’s reasons address the actual risk, or only their personal preference?
- If the attempt fails, can the clan absorb the consequence with this leader unavailable?
Combat crises: choose a risk level deliberately
Combat is not a simple comparison of troop counts. The manual describes several approaches, each trading casualty risk, ferocity, and the chance of an overall victory. Outcomes depend on the opposing force and on factors including leader qualifications, numbers, magic, blessings, circumstances, and luck.

The relevant qualifications
Combat is the war leader’s primary qualification. Leadership and deity are also important. Use those as the core of your assessment, then consider whether the situation offers a blessing, ritual, favorable circumstance, or another source of advantage.
What the combat approaches trade
| Approach described by the manual | What it generally prioritizes | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Conserve strength | Reducing exposure and preserving forces | Can the clan accept a less decisive result to avoid heavier losses? |
| Fight cautiously | Limiting casualty risk while still engaging | Is survival of the force more important than speed? |
| Fight fiercely | Greater aggression and pressure | Does the clan have enough reserve to pay for a costly engagement? |
| Take risks to win | Maximizing the chance of a decisive victory | Is the threat severe enough that a safer, slower outcome is unacceptable? |
| Wait for opportunities | Preserving the option to act later | Can the clan afford the time and the events that may occur while waiting? |
The table describes priorities, not fixed statistical outcomes. The game does not publish verified percentages for these options in the supplied sources.
Magic and rituals
Spending clan magic can provide a combat bonus, and available rituals may help. Treat magic as a reserve with an opportunity cost: use it when the improvement addresses a threat the clan cannot comfortably absorb, rather than spending it automatically on every uncertain fight. The manual does not establish that a particular ritual always succeeds, so evaluate the bonus alongside leader, numbers, circumstances, and luck.
After choosing a combat posture
Prepare for both victory and loss. A win may still cost casualties; a cautious posture may avoid destruction but fail to achieve the objective; a risky attack may produce a decisive result or a severe setback. Keep enough food, livestock, and wealth to deal with the result instead of treating the battle as the only event that matters.
How to handle diplomatic and non-combat requests
A diplomatic request can be dangerous even when no one is attacking. Its stakes may be wealth, relations, clan mood, a leader’s safety, or a later obligation. Apply the same five-question process, but make relationships a first-class resource.
Best Value
Separate the immediate favor from its relationship effect
Ask what the requester wants now and what your response signals for future dealings. A refusal may protect stores while damaging relations; compliance may preserve goodwill while creating a material shortage. The manual’s warning about deferred consequences applies here: an apparently clean resolution may establish a later story rather than end the matter permanently.
Do not spend a reserve you cannot replace
If the request consumes food, livestock, or wealth, compare it with the clan’s next agricultural obligation and with the possibility of another crisis. There is no documented universal rule that generosity, refusal, or delay is always best. The right choice depends on what the clan can afford and which relationship matters to its longer course.
What to do after a bad outcome
A negative result is a new state of the campaign, not an automatic game-over. The manual says that few situations are so critical that one negative outcome dooms the clan, and it notes that failure at one part of a story does not usually doom an entire ritual. That does not make failure harmless; it means you should assess the actual damage instead of abandoning the campaign immediately.
- List the concrete losses. Record missing food, livestock, wealth, magic, relationships, casualties, and unavailable leaders.
- Check the next obligation. Revisit the agricultural calendar and determine whether sowing or reaping is now at risk.
- Protect the weakest reserve. If food is low, stop taking optional actions that consume time or supplies. If a leader is lost, reassess who can handle the next crisis.
- Look for a follow-on scene. A failure may create another event or alter a story. Do not assume the first result is the final consequence.
- Change the plan, not just the mood. Replace an aggressive strategy with a preservation strategy when the clan’s reserves no longer support the original risk level.
Recovery is easier when you distinguish a setback from a death spiral. A single lost battle, failed negotiation, or expensive choice does not by itself prove that the campaign is doomed. The useful response is to make the next decision with the new facts.
Common mistakes that make random events worse
- Searching for a universal answer. The game’s uncertainty and delayed consequences mean that a choice cannot be judged independently of the clan’s condition.
- Picking the highest displayed skill without reading the situation. The manual specifically warns that the top number may not be the wisest choice in special circumstances.
- Ignoring time. An action can advance the calendar and allow another event to occur, while also interfering with sowing or reaping.
- Spending every reserve to avoid discomfort. Food, livestock, wealth, magic, and good relations are what make later choices survivable.
- Treating advisors as neutral. Their advice can be valuable, but each advisor has personal agendas.
- Assuming combat posture equals outcome. Cautious, fierce, risky, and waiting approaches alter trade-offs; they do not override opposing force, qualifications, magic, circumstances, or luck.
- Quitting after one failure. Assess the resulting damage and the next obligation before deciding that recovery is impossible.
- Confusing a player guide with an official answer key. The Steam Community guide directory contains player-created material on food, combat, exploration, and other systems, but the directory itself does not verify the detailed recommendations in those guides.
A repeatable crisis workflow
Use this compact procedure whenever a new scene appears:
- Pause on the prompt. Name the crisis category: resource, relationship, leader, exploration, or combat.
- Mark the threatened assets. Food, livestock, wealth, mood, diplomacy, safety, time, and magic are all possible costs.
- Check the calendar. Note whether sowing or reaping is imminent and whether the proposed action advances time.
- Review candidates. Match ability first, then traits, circumstances, and the Circle’s advice.
- Compare immediate and deferred outcomes. Prefer a plan whose later cost the clan can actually pay.
- Set a loss limit. Decide what level of casualties, spending, or relationship damage would leave the clan unable to function.
- Use magic or a ritual only when the stakes justify the reserve.
- Commit, then reassess. After the result, recalculate reserves and the next obligation instead of following the old plan automatically.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The official manual provides the documented principles behind preparation, leader selection, time, combat, and recovery. It does not publish a verified answer for every event or a complete probability table. The Steam listing describes more than 400 interactive story scenes, but that feature count is not a statistical study of randomness. The Steam Community guide directory can point to player-created guides, yet the directory does not establish that each guide’s detailed advice is authoritative. The game is also listed for mobile in the App Store.
Accordingly, be skeptical of any guide that gives a single “always choose this” response, claims an exact success percentage without a cited measurement, or treats one player’s outcome as proof of a rule. The documented strategy is broader and more durable: prepare reserves, match people and methods to the situation, protect the calendar, and plan for consequences that may arrive later.
