If your hero is dying too quickly in Halls of Torment, first identify how the health is being lost: a few heavy hits call for a larger health buffer or stronger defenses, while steady attrition points toward regeneration, movement, and safer positioning. Health, regeneration, block, and defense solve different problems, so check your character sheet and current item tooltips before choosing what to improve.
First identify why the run is ending
- You die in a few large hits: More maximum health can give you a bigger buffer. Block and defense can also help, but they work through separate mechanics.
- Your health steadily drains: Consider regeneration to recover between hits, and use movement and positioning to reduce how often enemies can hit you.
The game lists base health, health bonus, regeneration, block strength, defense, and defense bonus as defensive stats. Their value depends on the damage pattern you are facing and the trade-offs offered by your current choices; there is no established universal priority for every hero, stage, or difficulty.

Understand how block and defense work
Block and defense are separate layers. Block is checked first; if an attack is not blocked, defense reduces the damage you take. The mechanics reference says defense cannot reduce damage below 1. The block mechanics reference and the defense reference describe the interaction.

Block is not a guarantee that every hit will be stopped. The reference gives examples in which block chance depends on block strength relative to the incoming attack: a block value equal to unreduced attack damage corresponds to a 50% chance, while a value four times the damage corresponds to 100%. Treat these as mechanics-reference examples, not as a promise that your build can attain those values in every situation.

Choose a defensive upgrade that matches the problem
Maximum health for a bigger buffer
Health bonus increases the amount of damage your hero can withstand before dying. It can be useful when the problem is a burst of damage, but it does not reduce the damage of each hit or restore health afterward.
Regeneration for recovery between hits
Regeneration restores health over time in one-point ticks; stacking more regeneration shortens the interval between ticks. It can help offset gradual damage, but it should not be treated as protection against a hit that would otherwise be lethal. See the regeneration mechanics reference.
Block and defense for reducing incoming damage
Block may prevent an attack from dealing damage when its check succeeds. Defense reduces damage from attacks that get through that check. When considering these options, compare the actual block strength, chance, and defense values shown in your run rather than assuming the stat names represent the same kind of protection.
Check whether Fragile is amplifying direct attacks
Each stack of Fragile increases damage taken from direct attacks by 5%, according to the community wiki’s Fragile reference. That figure is specific to direct attacks; it should not be generalized to every damage type. If the status is contributing to your deaths, account for it before deciding that your base health or defenses alone are inadequate.

Apply a quick decision process during the run
- Open the character sheet and inspect your current stats. Note health, regeneration, block strength, and defense, along with any Fragile stacks.
- Classify the damage pattern. If you are losing large chunks at once, prioritize a buffer or damage reduction. If you are losing health gradually, consider recovery and ways to avoid repeated hits.
- Compare the offered choices using their real trade-offs. Weigh added maximum health, recovery rate, block chance or strength, and damage reduction against any offensive or movement benefit you would give up.
- Read the current tooltip before committing. Use the values displayed for your hero and run; do not rely on a universal ranking or an old build recommendation.
Use current tooltips for version-specific values
A May 10, 2024 update note describes changes to defensive-stat scaling, including a move toward base-value increases on items that raise block or defense. It establishes that defensive scaling has changed before, but it does not confirm that no later balance changes have occurred. For exact values in your current version, use the live character sheet and item tooltips.
