The highest-impact way to help endangered Amazon freshwater fish is to protect the rivers they depend on. Prioritize work that keeps rivers free-flowing, maintains migration routes, improves water quality, reduces mercury and other pollution, limits illegal or unsustainable harvest, restores wetlands and floodplains, and gives Indigenous peoples and local fishing communities a real role in decisions. Donations, policy action, responsible fish buying, research and education can all contribute when they support those outcomes. An aquarium purchase or a home water-test kit is not a substitute for habitat protection.
Why Amazon freshwater fish need basin-scale protection
The Amazon basin contains an exceptional diversity of freshwater fish. A World Wildlife Fund report published September 8, 2026, counts more than 2,700 Amazon freshwater fish species. WWF’s current Amazon overview gives a different figure of about 2,400 species. Treat these as figures from different publications and counting approaches, not as a contradiction that changes the conservation priority: the basin supports thousands of distinct fish populations, many of which depend on particular tributaries, floodplains, rapids or seasonal connections.

Freshwater species face pressures that operate across a river system rather than at the level of one aquarium tank. WWF identifies habitat fragmentation, dams, pollution, overfishing and climate change as major threats to Amazon fishes. Dams can block aquatic-species movement, while mercury released by artisanal mining can contaminate water and move through food chains. Illegal wildlife trade and overharvesting add pressure where collection is poorly controlled.

IUCN reports that 27% of freshwater species are threatened with extinction. An IUCN freshwater-species page reproduces WWF’s 2018 estimate of an 83% decline in freshwater vertebrate populations since 1970. WWF’s current freshwater program describes a 76% decline rate for freshwater species and says freshwater ecosystems support more than 125,000 species. These percentages use different datasets and measures, so they should not be combined into one trend line. They do show why conserving a single fish without protecting its water, food web and migration route is unlikely to work.

Rank conservation actions by ecological leverage
| Action | What it protects | What a supporter can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protect free-flowing rivers and connectivity | Migration routes, spawning areas, floodplains and seasonal habitat | Fund or join projects that defend intact rivers, improve hydropower planning, restore wetlands and maintain environmental flows | A project must identify the rivers, habitats and decisions it can influence; a generic “fish” appeal may not demonstrate this |
| Improve water quality | Fish health, food webs and people who depend on the same water | Support work on mercury, sewage, agricultural runoff, mining controls and watershed restoration | A household aquarium test cannot measure or solve basin-wide contamination |
| Strengthen Indigenous and community-led management | Local fishing rules, traditional knowledge, compliance and equitable benefits | Choose programs with transparent local governance, rights protections, long-term finance and services for communities | Do not assume that a project is community-led merely because it operates near a community |
| Reduce illegal and unsustainable harvest | Wild populations targeted for food or the ornamental trade | Buy only legally documented, traceable fish and avoid species whose origin or collection status is unclear | No universal consumer certification scheme for Amazon ornamental fish was established in the available evidence |
| Support assessment, research and education | Species data, local expertise, breeding knowledge and future conservation decisions | Give to programs that publish methods, train local people and connect research to management | Research has value when it informs protection; a species list alone does not secure habitat |
WWF’s Amazon freshwater work connects healthy free-flowing rivers with fishing rules, environmental flows and protection for threatened freshwater biodiversity. WWF also recommends restored connectivity, better water quality, community-led fisheries management and conservation planned across the basin rather than in isolated sites.
1. Put money behind rivers, corridors and habitat
Look for the physical features fish need
A credible habitat program should explain which rivers, tributaries, wetlands, floodplains or rapids it works in and what biological connection it is trying to preserve. Fish may need to move between feeding, nursery and spawning areas as water levels change. A dam, road crossing, levee or isolated reservoir can interrupt that cycle even when water remains present.
Useful interventions can include protecting intact reaches, reconnecting floodplains, removing or redesigning barriers, securing environmental flows below dams, and improving hydropower planning before construction. “Connectivity” should mean more than a map of protected areas: ask whether fish can actually move through the seasons and whether the project measures that outcome.
Check the scale before donating
Compare the proposed action with the threat. A small tributary restoration can be appropriate when a local barrier is the main problem. A basin-wide campaign is more relevant when the issue is a policy that affects many rivers. Ask what part of the system the organization can influence, who owns or governs the land and water, and which decisions or enforcement mechanisms will continue after the grant ends.

Use WWF’s conservation priorities as a screening lens
WWF’s 2026 Amazon Forgotten Fishes report emphasizes free-flowing rivers, restored connectivity, improved water quality, community-led fisheries management and basin-wide conservation. Those categories are useful when reviewing any organization, whether or not WWF is the recipient. A proposal that cannot connect its activities to habitat, water, fisheries governance or species monitoring deserves closer scrutiny before you give.
2. Support water-quality and pollution reduction
Mercury from artisanal mining
WWF’s Amazon overview identifies mercury from artisanal mining as a contaminant that can enter water and food chains. The risk is not limited to a fish’s immediate swimming area: mercury can be transported, accumulated by organisms and become a food-safety issue for people who eat local fish. Effective programs may combine monitoring with mining regulation, safer processing, health advice, alternative livelihoods and enforcement.
Other contaminants matter too
WWF names pollution broadly as a major pressure, and water-quality work can also address untreated sewage, agricultural runoff, sediment and industrial discharges. Prefer programs that state which contaminants they measure, where samples are taken, how results are reported and what authority can act on exceedances. “Clean water” is not a measurable plan unless the project defines a baseline and a target.

Pollution reduction often requires government action, local services and long-term monitoring. A nonprofit may provide evidence, training or legal support without being able to close a mine or build a treatment plant itself. Read the organization’s role carefully and look for partnerships with agencies and communities responsible for implementation.

3. Back Indigenous and local community leadership
WWF says Indigenous peoples and local communities are among the most effective stewards of freshwater ecosystems and that their rights, finance, technology and services need support. This is both a conservation and governance issue: people who rely on a river often hold detailed knowledge of seasonal fish movements, spawning grounds and changes in catch, but that knowledge is useful only when decision-making power and legal rights are respected.
Questions to ask about a community-led program
- Are Indigenous governments, local associations or fishing cooperatives named as decision-makers, rather than only as beneficiaries or workshop attendees?
- Does the budget show how funds reach local institutions, and are compensation, equipment and training described?
- Can communities set or revise fishing rules, close areas seasonally and enforce them?
- Are data ownership, consent and cultural knowledge handled transparently?
- Does the project report benefits and harms, including who may lose access when a protected area or harvest limit is created?
Be cautious with projects that use community imagery but provide no local governance structure, grievance process or financial reporting. Conservation that removes local agency can fail even when its ecological goal is sound.
4. Make aquarium-fish purchases safer for wild populations
Ask for legal origin and species identity
Never buy a wild-caught Amazon fish unless the seller can document its legal origin and identify the species accurately. Common names can cover several species with different ranges and conservation statuses. Ask where and when the fish was collected, which authority permits the collection, and how the shipment can be traced through the supply chain.
Prefer captive-bred fish when appropriate
Captive breeding can reduce collection pressure for species that breed reliably in captivity, but the label alone is not proof. Ask whether the fish was bred in captivity or merely held and exported, and whether the breeder keeps records. Captive breeding also does not protect the original habitat; it is a complementary measure, not a replacement for river conservation.

Walk away when information is missing
Do not purchase a species whose collection status, identity or origin is unclear. The available evidence establishes illegal wildlife trade and overharvesting as threats, but it does not establish a universal certification list that makes every “sustainable” label reliable. In the absence of documentation, not buying is the lower-risk choice.
Do not release aquarium fish
Releasing unwanted fish can spread disease, introduce non-native species or genetically mix captive and wild populations. Rehome fish through a responsible keeper, retailer or aquarium society, following local rules. Never move fish between rivers or release them into the Amazon or any other natural waterway.
5. Give to research, training and conservation education
Species assessments and field monitoring determine which populations are declining and which sites need protection. IUCN assesses freshwater extinction risk, identifies important sites and promotes governance, restoration, monitoring and investment. These functions are especially important in a basin where many fish are poorly known and where a lack of data can delay protection.
The Amazon Research Center for Ornamental Fishes describes donations supporting sustainable breeding, ecological research, education and training for local fishers through the Aquarium of the Amazon in Iquitos, Peru. This type of program can connect ornamental-fish expertise with local skills and conservation awareness. Before giving, confirm the current donation route and review what activities are funded, who conducts them and how results are shared.

What strong research support looks like
- A clearly named species, watershed or management question
- Methods for surveys, breeding, genetic work or water monitoring
- Training and paid roles for local researchers, fishers or students
- Results that inform fishing rules, protected areas, restoration or trade decisions
- Reporting that distinguishes activities completed from ecological outcomes still being measured
6. Use aquarium water testing as a small, honest contribution
A freshwater aquarium water-quality test kit can help a fish keeper observe basic parameters and respond to poor husbandry. A local project may also use field kits for screening, provided staff understand calibration, sampling design and laboratory confirmation. That is useful for the fish in the tank or for a defined monitoring program.
A test kit does not restore a river, stop a dam, remove mercury from a food web or protect a wild population. Do not present buying one as a direct conservation donation. If you use testing for a community project, ask who receives the data, how samples are stored, what thresholds trigger action and whether results are verified by an accredited laboratory when decisions carry health or enforcement consequences.
How to evaluate a conservation organization before donating
| Evaluation question | Evidence to look for | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| What is protected? | Named species, river, tributary, wetland, fishery or policy | Only “save the Amazon” language with no location or target |
| What will the money pay for? | Budget categories, grant period, staff or partner roles and deliverables | Urgency and imagery without a use-of-funds explanation |
| Who leads? | Named Indigenous, community, research or government partners with decision authority | Local people described only as recipients or photo subjects |
| How is progress measured? | Barriers removed, hectares connected, water-quality results, compliance, catch data or species assessments | Only numbers of events, social posts or brochures |
| Is the approach legally and ecologically appropriate? | Permits, local rules, ethical protocols and a plan for unintended effects | Promises to release captive fish or move species without safeguards |
| Can results be checked? | Annual reports, field updates, independent accounts or publicly explained methods | Claims that cannot be tied to a place, date or activity |
IUCN’s freshwater program provides a useful standard for judging ambition: sustainable management, species and habitat protection, restoration, governance, monitoring and investment need to work together. IUCN states that investment in those areas is fundamental to meeting underlying human-health and food-security needs.

Practical action plans for different readers
If you are making a one-time donation
- Choose a defined intervention: free-flowing rivers, water quality, community fisheries, species assessment or education.
- Confirm the geographic connection to the Amazon and identify the local partners.
- Read the current budget and reporting information before paying.
- Save the receipt and follow outcome reports; recurring gifts are useful only when the organization can explain its long-term need.
If you keep Amazon fish in an aquarium
- Record the exact scientific name and ask for legal, traceable origin before purchase.
- Prefer documented captive-bred stock when it is suitable for the species and your setup.
- Maintain stable water quality and provide enough space, filtration and compatible tank mates so replacement purchases are not driven by preventable losses.
- Never release fish, plants or water into natural waterways.
- Support habitat or community programs separately from your husbandry spending.
If you want to volunteer or advocate
- Offer skills that match a program’s stated need, such as translation, data management, education, fundraising or policy research.
- Support laws and infrastructure that reduce mining pollution, protect environmental flows and require credible impact assessment for dams and other barriers.
- Share local voices and primary reports rather than simplified claims about a single “endangered fish.”
- Ask elected officials and agencies how fish passage, water quality and community rights will be monitored after a project is approved.
Common mistakes that reduce conservation impact
- Focusing on a charismatic species alone: a fish cannot recover if its spawning habitat, food web or migration route remains blocked.
- Treating any aquarium purchase as conservation: buying can increase collection pressure when origin is undocumented.
- Assuming captive breeding solves the wild problem: it may reduce demand for wild fish, but it does not clean water or reconnect rivers.
- Using a test kit as proof of river health: a few readings from one tank or site cannot represent a basin.
- Ignoring local authority: projects imposed without Indigenous and community decision-making can undermine both rights and compliance.
- Accepting vague impact claims: request a location, baseline, timeline, budget and measurable outcome.
- Moving live fish: transport and release can spread pathogens and create invasive-population risks.
What success should look like
Conservation progress should be visible in the condition and governance of the river, not only in the number of donations or outreach events. Depending on the project, meaningful indicators may include fish passage restored at a barrier, protected environmental flows, connected floodplain habitat, lower mercury or sewage exposure, compliance with seasonal fishing rules, improved catch data, secure community management rights, or a better assessment of a previously data-poor species.
Time horizons differ. A policy change may prevent future fragmentation while population recovery takes years. A monitoring project may first establish a baseline rather than show an immediate increase in fish. Read reports for the distinction between an activity completed, an output delivered and an ecological outcome measured.
Where to start today
Pick one action that matches your influence: fund a transparent river or community program, verify the origin of every aquarium fish, support credible freshwater assessments, or advocate for water-quality and free-flowing-river policies. The strongest approach combines these choices instead of treating a purchase, donation or test kit as a complete solution. Amazon fish conservation succeeds when the river remains connected, clean enough to support food webs, governed with local participation and monitored well enough for problems to be acted on.
