Support at home works best when it changes with the person: make the surroundings safer without unnecessarily restricting independence, adapt familiar routines to current abilities, communicate with patience and respect, and bring in help when one caregiver cannot safely cover the needs. Start by checking the home for immediate hazards, then revisit the plan as abilities and risks change.
How to make the home safer
Alzheimer’s can affect judgment, perception, balance, and the safe use of household items. Walk through the home room by room with the person’s current abilities and routines in mind. Fix immediate hazards first, and repeat the review when their abilities or the household setup changes. The National Institute on Aging offers a room-by-room home safety checklist; the Alzheimer’s Association also describes home safety adaptations.

- Clear routes: Remove loose rugs and clutter that could cause trips. Make walkways easy to navigate and well lit.
- Bathroom: Consider grab bars near the shower, tub, or toilet, along with nonslip strips or mats. A shower stool or handheld shower head may help if appropriate. Choose equipment and installation to suit the person and the bathroom; no single adaptation guarantees against falls.
- Kitchen and appliances: Store dangerous items securely and consider stove safety knobs or an automatic shutoff switch if appliance use is a concern.
- Medicines and chemicals: Keep medicines and household chemicals secured so they cannot be accessed or mistaken for something safe to eat or drink.
- Fire, gas, and emergencies: Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, consider gas detection where relevant, and keep emergency contacts near phones. The NIA advises setting the water heater to 120°F to reduce scald risk.
- Orientation: Simple signs may help the person find rooms or identify familiar items. Keep the home usable and welcoming rather than removing opportunities for activity and social contact without a specific safety reason.
Match each change to a real need in the household. A checklist is a prompt to assess, not a requirement to install every item.
How to communicate and help with daily activities
Communication can become harder as Alzheimer’s changes, and hearing or vision difficulties can add to the challenge. Speak directly to the person and treat them with dignity; do not speak about them as if they were absent. The Alzheimer’s Association’s communication guidance recommends listening and allowing time for a response.

- If the person is upset or mistaken, avoid turning the moment into an argument or repeatedly correcting them. Respond to the feelings or meaning behind what they say.
Daily care may involve meals, bathing, dressing, grooming, dental care, medication safety, and appointments with the doctor. There is no single routine that fits every person or every stage. Preserve familiar habits where they work, simplify steps that have become difficult, and adjust activities as abilities change. The Association’s daily care guidance covers these areas.
How to prepare for wandering and emergencies
Consider the person’s individual risk and make a plan before a concerning situation occurs. Plans can include arranging companions or check-ins when appropriate and considering transportation alternatives if driving or getting lost is a concern. The Alzheimer’s Association’s wandering guidance advises families not to leave someone with dementia unsupervised in new or changed surroundings.

For home security, the Association suggests measures such as placing exterior door locks out of sight, but its guidance is explicit: never lock a person in at home. Choose safeguards that address the actual risk without creating a trap or making the home unnecessarily restrictive. Reassess the plan as circumstances change.

The National Institute on Aging explains the difference between home care aides, home health services, and other caregiving help. The Alzheimer’s Association also describes in-home care options. Ask local clinicians, family, friends, and service locators for leads. When comparing providers, ask about qualifications, tasks and hours covered, how the service addresses your list of needs, local availability, and likely cost or insurance coverage. Costs and availability vary by location, provider, and coverage.
For guidance on building a local support system, see the NIA’s caregiver help resources and the Alzheimer’s Association’s support group information. A clinician and local services can help tailor a plan to the person’s circumstances.
