How to Support a Conservation Project Without Falling for Greenwashing

Support a conservation project only after you can explain, in specific terms, what your money is expected to achieve, what would happen without it, how the result will be measured, who verifies it, how long it should last, and who is accountable if it fails. A polished “nature-positive” label or certification can help you find a project, but it is not evidence by itself.

The safest approach is to investigate the claim before the organization’s branding, separate donations from credits and investments, check community rights and governance, and make only the environmental claim that the evidence actually supports.

Start with the exact claim, not the project’s branding

“Supports biodiversity,” “protects forests,” “restores habitat,” and “cancels an impact” describe very different propositions. Write down the claim you are being asked to believe and turn it into questions that can be tested.

  • Where? Identify the country, landscape, watershed, marine area, or other defined location.
  • What? Name the species, habitat, ecosystem function, or social outcome that is meant to benefit.
  • Compared with what? Ask for the baseline and the expected result without the project.
  • Measured how? Look for indicators, methods, frequency of monitoring, and the period covered.
  • Checked by whom? Identify the government agency, independent auditor, scientific body, registry, or other reviewer.
  • For how long? Find the legal, financial, and management arrangements that protect the result after the initial payment.
  • Who is responsible? Establish who answers for missed targets, reversed gains, or funds that run out.

If an organization cannot answer these basic questions, treat its environmental language as marketing rather than proof of a conservation outcome.

What credible evidence looks like

A named project with a defined baseline

A credible proposal identifies the project, its boundaries, the threats it addresses, and a baseline against which change will be judged. “We support nature” is not a baseline. A useful baseline might describe existing forest cover, a species population, water quality, or another measurable condition, together with the date and method used to establish it.

Additionality

Additionality asks whether your support enables a result that would not otherwise occur. A project may be worthwhile even when it is legally required or already financed, but its operator should not present your payment as causing an extra benefit unless it can show what your money changes. Ask whether the activity is required by law, included in an existing budget, or already funded by another buyer.

Durability and reversal risk

Conservation gains can be lost through fire, development, illegal logging, changing political support, poor maintenance, or the end of a funding agreement. Look for enforceable land or water protections, a management plan, reserve funds, successor responsibilities, and a stated response when expected results do not materialize. A short campaign with no plan beyond the fundraising period is not the same as a durable conservation outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent evidence

Prefer monitoring reports, public registries, agency decisions, audit reports, and methods that another qualified person can inspect. “Verified” should identify the verifier, the standard or protocol used, the period reviewed, and any exceptions. A project’s own progress page can be useful, but self-reporting alone does not establish independence.

Traceability and no double counting

For credits or offsets, each unit should be identifiable, recorded, and retired or otherwise blocked from being claimed twice. Ask who owns the environmental claim, where units are registered, how transfers are recorded, and what prevents the project, an intermediary, and a buyer from all counting the same result.

A practical screening process before you contribute

  1. Capture the promise. Save the exact wording, date, price, unit, and terms of the offer. Note whether it says “donation,” “credit,” “offset,” “investment,” or something else.
  2. Request the project file. Ask for the location, implementing organization, legal status, baseline, target, measurement method, budget, timetable, and current status. If a document is confidential, ask for a public summary and the reason for withholding details.
  3. Test additionality. Ask what would happen if no new supporter paid. Check whether the work is a statutory obligation, an already contracted activity, or an expansion that depends on this funding.
  4. Check permanence. Identify the protection instrument, landholder or resource manager, funding term, maintenance obligations, reversal plan, and party responsible after the project’s first phase.
  5. Inspect verification. Find the named verifier, the protocol, the date of the latest review, unresolved findings, and a way to read the underlying report or registry entry.
  6. Check accounting. For a credit, confirm issuance, serial numbers or equivalent identifiers, transfer history, retirement status, and the accounting boundary. Ask how overlapping claims are prevented.
  7. Ask about people and rights. Determine which Indigenous Peoples and local communities hold rights or depend on the area, how they participate in decisions, what benefits they receive, and how complaints are handled.
  8. Match the claim to the evidence. If the evidence supports habitat management in one location, do not infer that your payment “cancels” a personal footprint, makes a company climate-neutral, or delivers a global biodiversity result.
  9. Recheck current status. Projects, registries, financing rounds, and investment terms change. Confirm that the project is operating, accepting contributions, and using the same terms shown in the material you reviewed.

Greenwashing warning signs and what to ask instead

Warning sign Why it matters Better question
Broad seals or “nature-positive” language with no underlying documents The label may not reveal its scope, standard, or reviewer. Which standard applies, who verifies compliance, and where is the project-level evidence?
A donation described as fully cancelling an impact A contribution does not automatically equal an equivalent, additional, permanent reduction or restoration result. What exact claim may a donor make, and what accounting supports it?
No baseline or counterfactual Without a comparison, reported activity is not proof of additional benefit. What would have happened without this project or payment?
“Verified” without a named reviewer or date Verification cannot be evaluated or reproduced. Who reviewed what, under which protocol, and when?
Urgency paired with little project information Pressure can discourage normal due diligence. Can I review the budget, monitoring plan, rights arrangements, and terms before paying?
One result claimed by several parties Double counting makes the environmental claim larger than the underlying outcome. Where is the unit registered, and how is it retired or otherwise reserved for one claimant?
Local people mentioned only as beneficiaries Communities may have rights, governance authority, or risks that a promotional page omits. Who consented, who governs, how are benefits negotiated, and how can grievances be resolved?

Understand what you are actually buying or funding

Support mechanisms carry different rights, risks, restrictions, and claims. Do not compare them as if they were interchangeable products.

Route What it is Use restrictions and financial expectation Questions about results
Donation A contribution to an organization or project. It may be unrestricted or earmarked; repayment is not expected. What activities will it fund, and what reporting will donors receive?
Grant Funding provided for defined purposes or milestones. Usually has a scope, budget, reporting duties, and possible conditions. Are milestones independently checked, and what happens if they are missed?
Loan or investment Capital provided with an expectation of repayment, interest, or financial return. There is financial risk, a term, and contractual priority that may differ from a donation. Are ecological and social outcomes conditions of repayment, and who bears performance risk?
Trust fund Capital held and deployed over a longer period under specified governance. Rules may limit eligible uses, withdrawals, and decision-makers. Who controls the fund, publishes accounts, and reviews long-term performance?
Blended finance Public, philanthropic, and private capital combined in one structure. Different participants may have different returns, guarantees, and exposure. Which party pays for verification, and are public benefits protected if private terms change?
Nature credit An emerging unit intended to help finance measured nature outcomes. Market rules, claim rights, and methods are still developing; a credit is not automatically an offset. What does the unit represent, where is it recorded, and what claims are permitted?

Conservation International describes these financing approaches as broad tools rather than a universal ranking. Choose according to your role, acceptable financial risk, time horizon, governance rights, and the evidence available for the specific project.

Offsets and credits require extra scrutiny

Apply the mitigation hierarchy

For biodiversity impacts, the mitigation hierarchy is the order that matters: avoid damage, minimize what cannot be avoided, restore or rehabilitate what can be restored, and consider an offset only for residual impacts. An offset should not become permission to cause preventable damage. Conservation International identifies permanence, additionality, and equivalence as core principles for biodiversity offsets.

Follow the accounting, not the slogan

The Federal Trade Commission’s Environmental Claims: Summary of the Green Guides says: “Marketers should have competent and reliable scientific evidence to support carbon offset claims.” The same guidance warns that offset accounting should be appropriate, that the same reductions must not be sold more than once, and that timing limitations should be disclosed. It also cautions that a broad environmental seal can mislead when its basis is not clearly conveyed.

FTC materials are U.S. guidance; legal requirements differ elsewhere. Even where a transaction is lawful, ask whether the claim is scientifically supported and narrowly worded enough to match the evidence.

Use a chain of controls

Federal Highway Administration ecosystem-crediting guidance describes a useful sequence: establish eligibility, set a baseline, quantify credits, verify them, register them, sell them, and continue maintenance and verification. That sequence is a due-diligence model, not a universal certification for every conservation donation. A project that cannot explain where it sits in this chain deserves closer scrutiny.

Distinguish a credit from a donation

A donation may support conservation without creating a quantified unit that someone can claim against an impact. A credit may have defined accounting and use restrictions, but the existence of a unit does not by itself prove additionality, permanence, equivalence, or a right to make a particular public claim. Read the terms governing issuance, ownership, retirement, and marketing language.

Check rights, governance, and benefit sharing

Environmental performance and social legitimacy are connected. A project should identify who makes decisions, who holds legal or customary rights, and how affected people can influence design, implementation, monitoring, and remedy.

  • Participation: Are Indigenous Peoples and local communities involved before decisions are final, rather than informed after the fact?
  • Consent and rights: Are land, resource, cultural, and customary rights recognized in the project documents?
  • Benefit sharing: Are payments, jobs, services, enterprise opportunities, or other benefits set out in negotiated agreements?
  • Transparency: Can people see budgets, contracts, monitoring results, and the identity of decision-makers?
  • Grievance process: Is there a safe, accessible route to raise complaints, with timelines and an independent escalation option?
  • Safeguards: Are there protections against displacement, restricted access, retaliation, or unequal distribution of costs?

Conservation International’s principles for natural climate solutions call for support for community and Indigenous rights, social and environmental standards, negotiated benefit sharing with host communities and governments, rigorous quality standards, and third-party verification. Treat those principles as questions to put to any project; they are the organization’s stated principles, not a guarantee about every project using similar language.

What the available examples do—and do not—show

Conservation Stewards Program

Conservation International’s Conservation Stewards Program describes conservation agreements, local leadership, livelihood support, enterprise development, and diversified financing. Its page reports that forests under conservation agreements experienced 36 percent less forest loss than matched comparison sites. The page’s publication year is not stated. This is an organization-reported result in a matched-site evaluation context, not a universal effect and not evidence that a different project will achieve the same result. Ask for the study design, locations, comparison method, time period, and project-specific monitoring before applying the figure to a donation decision.

Manta Impact Bond

Conservation International describes the Manta Impact Bond as providing upfront private capital for marine protection, community livelihoods, and conservation management, with investor repayment tied to independently verified ecological and social outcomes. The description illustrates outcomes-linked finance: capital is supplied before results, and repayment depends on verified performance. The page describes the project as in development, so confirm its current status, availability, terms, verification arrangement, and investor risks before treating it as active or available.

U.S. conservation banking

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes conservation banking as permanently protecting and managing habitat for specified species in exchange for approved credits that can be sold to developers addressing impacts to those same species. It is a regulated, geographically and species-specific mechanism. Buying or supporting a conservation bank is therefore not the same as making an unrestricted donation, and a credit for one species or location should not be represented as a general biodiversity benefit.

How to compare projects on one page

Create a short record for each candidate project. The purpose is not to manufacture a single score, but to expose missing evidence and make unlike routes comparable.

Decision field Record
Claim Exact environmental or social outcome promised, including any permitted buyer language.
Place and beneficiaries Location, species or ecosystem, rights-holders, and communities affected.
Instrument Donation, restricted grant, loan, investment, trust-fund contribution, blended finance, or credit.
Additionality Evidence that the support changes what would otherwise occur; note legal obligations and existing funding.
Measurement Baseline, indicators, method, reporting interval, and responsible data owner.
Verification Named independent reviewer or agency, protocol, review date, and public documents.
Durability Protection term, management plan, financing after launch, and reversal response.
Accounting Registry, serial or equivalent identifier, transfer record, retirement rule, and double-counting control.
Governance and rights Decision authority, consent or participation process, benefit agreement, and grievance route.
Risk and time horizon Financial loss, ecological underperformance, project delay, and how long you can wait for results.
Evidence gaps Documents not supplied, unresolved findings, or claims that exceed the available proof.

A project with fewer promotional claims but complete, inspectable answers is generally easier to assess than one with impressive language and opaque records.

Choose a support route that fits your goal

If you want flexible conservation funding

An unrestricted donation can let an experienced organization direct money to urgent needs, but ask how unrestricted funds are allocated, what governance controls apply, and what public reporting you can expect. Do not convert a flexible gift into a quantified offset claim unless the organization provides accounting and claim rights that support it.

If you want a defined activity

A restricted grant or earmarked contribution can specify a habitat, species, or community program. Confirm that the restriction is practical, that overhead and contingencies are covered, and that the organization can reallocate funds if conditions change without abandoning the intended outcome.

If you expect financial return

Loans, bonds, and investments require ordinary financial due diligence in addition to conservation due diligence. Review repayment priority, maturity, default provisions, liquidity, conflicts of interest, fees, and the possibility of losing capital. An ecological outcome tied to repayment does not remove financial risk.

If you are addressing a regulated impact

Use only a mechanism whose geography, species, accounting rules, and legal approvals match the impact. U.S. conservation banking, for example, is species- and location-specific. A general donation or unrelated nature credit cannot automatically satisfy a regulatory obligation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a project fails your checks

  • No location or baseline: pause and request a project map, baseline date, and indicators. If none exists, do not infer a measurable outcome.
  • Unclear additionality: ask for the counterfactual and funding history. Consider an unrestricted contribution without an impact-cancellation claim only if the organization is transparent about what the money supports.
  • Unverifiable “third-party” language: request the reviewer’s name, scope, standard, and report. Treat an unnamed endorsement as promotional copy.
  • Double-counting concern: do not buy or claim the unit until the registry, ownership, and retirement rules are clear.
  • Community objections: stop and seek evidence of rights recognition, participation, negotiated benefits, and a functioning grievance process.
  • Project status changed: confirm whether fundraising, construction, implementation, or investment enrollment is still open. Do not rely on an old page or announcement.
  • Claims exceed results: narrow your own wording. Say what your contribution supports, not that it erases an impact, unless the project’s evidence and accounting support that exact statement.

Make a defensible claim after you support the work

Keep the receipt, agreement, project description, unit identifier if applicable, monitoring report, and the date on which you reviewed the terms. Record what was promised at the time of payment because web pages and project status can change.

Use precise language such as “I contributed to habitat protection in [the named location] under the project’s stated program” when that is all the evidence establishes. Reserve stronger statements—such as a quantified reduction, offset, or cancellation—for cases where the project documents define the unit, authorize that claim, and show competent measurement, verification, permanence, and no double counting.

If a project later misses its target, ask what the contract or policy provides: corrective action, replacement units, refunds, revised reporting, or no remedy. Accountability is part of the conservation decision, not an afterthought.

A short due-diligence email you can send

Before paying, ask the organization to answer these questions in writing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. What exact location, species, ecosystem, and outcome does this payment support?
  2. What is the baseline, and what would happen without this project or contribution?
  3. Is the activity legally required or already financed?
  4. How are results measured, how often are they reported, and who verifies them?
  5. What legal and financial arrangements keep the result in place, and who handles reversals?
  6. If this is a credit or offset, where is it registered, how is it tracked, and how is double counting prevented?
  7. Which Indigenous Peoples and local communities participate, what rights are recognized, how are benefits negotiated, and how are grievances handled?
  8. What claims may a supporter make, and which claims are expressly not allowed?
  9. What is the project’s current operating or financing status, and where can I read the latest report?

Clear, specific answers do not guarantee success, but evasive answers are a strong reason to withhold support or choose a project with better evidence.
