Build a portfolio sensitivity exercise by connecting the investments you own to companies’ profits, then testing clearly stated slower-growth assumptions alongside valuation assumptions. The result can show where your portfolio may be most exposed; it cannot predict market returns or tell you exactly how much you will lose.
What this stress test can—and cannot—tell you
Slower corporate profit growth is an operating scenario: companies earn profits more slowly than in a baseline case. To estimate what that might mean for investments, you must add assumptions about how investors value those profits. Share prices do not automatically move one-for-one with earnings.

There is no universally validated household formula that converts a particular slowdown in profit growth into a portfolio loss. Treat the output as a sensitivity, not a forecast or price target. Its usefulness depends on both the assumptions you choose and your portfolio’s actual exposures.

Start with a list of holdings and their weights in your portfolio. For funds, look through to major underlying exposures where that information is available; owning several funds does not necessarily mean owning different businesses. Group company exposures by sector and note shared dependencies, such as the same customers, input costs, or economic drivers.

- Record each holding’s portfolio weight and asset class.
- For funds, note their major underlying company and sector exposures.
- Flag clusters that may respond to the same slowdown, cost pressure, or credit condition.
Diversification across investments and asset types can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot ensure that a portfolio avoids losses in a falling market. The SEC’s overview of investment products explains how investment choices fit within an allocation, while its asset allocation and diversification guide covers allocation and rebalancing.
Step 2: Trace how slower profits could affect each exposure
For each important company exposure, ask how the business makes money and what could weaken or support its profits. Consider whether demand for its products or services might change, how costs and debt affect its finances, and where it stands in its industry. FINRA recommends examining a company’s operations, finances, debt, industry position, and fit with your wider strategy. Public companies file quarterly 10-Qs and annual 10-Ks with the SEC; these filings can help you check the company’s own disclosures rather than relying only on a headline or fund label. See FINRA’s guide to evaluating stocks.

Demand, economic shifts, labor and supply-chain costs, management, and product strength are among the factors the SEC identifies as potentially affecting stock prices. These factors help frame questions to investigate; they do not establish how a specific holding will perform. See the SEC’s introduction to investing.
Step 3: Write down distinct growth cases
Choose a period and define a baseline plus at least two slower-profit-growth cases—for example, a mild slowdown and a more severe one. State the assumptions plainly. There is no regulator-prescribed household formula or sourced set of slowdown percentages to use, so avoid presenting made-up figures as forecasts.

For each case, specify the assumed profit growth and any other variables you choose to test, such as demand, costs, interest rates, credit conditions, or valuation. Keep operating assumptions distinct from valuation assumptions: the former describe the business environment, while the latter describe how investors might price earnings under that environment.
A real supervisory stress scenario can illustrate how several variables may be combined, but it is not a personal portfolio estimate. The Federal Reserve’s 2026 severely adverse scenario is a hypothetical severe global recession scenario. It projects equity prices falling about 58 percent in the first three quarters and U.S. unemployment reaching a 10 percent peak in 2027 Q3. The Federal Reserve explicitly says, “These hypothetical scenarios are not economic forecasts.” These are scenario assumptions for bank supervision, not observed outcomes or a forecast of your portfolio’s loss.

Step 4: Translate the cases into holding-level sensitivities
For each holding, explain how the slower-growth case could affect its illustrative value or income, and show which valuation assumption you used. If a company’s expected earnings are lower in a case, make clear that any modeled price effect also depends on the multiple or other valuation approach you assume. Avoid implying that an earnings change mechanically produces an equal percentage change in a share price.

Label a simple weighted calculation as such. If it excludes fund look-through, correlations, taxes, or cash flows, say so; the available sources do not prescribe one household method for incorporating those refinements. Show the assumptions and arithmetic clearly enough that a reader can replace them with their own research.

Step 5: Compare results and decide what merits attention
Compare the baseline and slower-growth cases by holding, sector, and asset class. Identify which exposures contribute most to the modeled change and which assumptions drive that result. Check whether the outcome changes materially when you use a shorter or longer period, a different operating assumption, or a different valuation assumption.
A large modeled sensitivity is a prompt to investigate, not a blanket instruction to buy or sell. Consider it alongside your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for risk. The SEC notes that allocation is personal and may depend on these factors; portfolio drift can also be a reason to consider rebalancing. Diversification may help manage concentration, but it does not remove the possibility of loss.
