Use OBS Studio to capture World of Warcraft, mix your game and microphone audio, encode one stable feed, and deliver it either directly to Twitch and YouTube or through a cloud multistream relay. For most single-PC players, the dependable baseline is a hardware H.264 encoder, CBR rate control, a two-second keyframe interval where required, and a bitrate no higher than roughly 75% of stable upload capacity. Test privately before going live.
What you need before creating the stream
A single-PC World of Warcraft stream does not normally need a capture card. The game is rendered on the same computer that runs OBS, so OBS can capture the game window directly. A capture card becomes relevant only when the game is running on another computer or console.

- OBS Studio: install the current release for your operating system and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard on first launch.
- A stable upload connection: measure the connection you will actually use while playing, preferably over Ethernet. Your configured video bitrate must leave room for protocol overhead and other traffic.
- A supported encoder: use a modern hardware encoder when your GPU or integrated graphics provides one. OBS says hardware encoders move the work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and are generally recommended for better performance.
- A Twitch account, a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, or both: each destination has its own account connection or stream key.
- Audio sources: a microphone and desktop or game audio. A headset can prevent game sound from feeding back into the microphone.
- Optional production elements: a webcam, alerts, chat, overlays, and browser sources. Add only what the computer and connection can sustain.
Twitch describes the basic requirement as a stable internet connection plus a tool that broadcasts video to the internet, called a video encoder. OBS supplies both the scene-composition and encoding part; Twitch and YouTube remain separate destinations.
How OBS, Twitch and YouTube fit together
OBS is the compositor and encoder
OBS combines the WoW image, microphone, desktop audio, webcam and other sources into a scene. It then compresses that scene into a live video stream. OBS does not provide the audience, chat service or video archive; those functions belong to the destination platform.

Twitch and YouTube are delivery destinations
You connect a destination in Settings → Stream. You can authorize an account connection or paste that service’s stream key. Treat stream keys like passwords: never display them in a recording, screenshot or public chat, and regenerate one immediately if it is exposed.
One feed or two local feeds
The simplest multistream arrangement is one OBS output sent to a cloud relay, which then forwards the feed to Twitch and YouTube. This avoids configuring two separate local outputs. The relay adds a third-party service dependency and another place where an account or stream key must be managed.
Direct delivery gives you more local control over each destination, but it can require another encoder session or output path and additional upload capacity. More local encoding also increases GPU or CPU load. If the game and OBS already approach the computer’s limits, a relay is usually the easier architecture.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision point | Direct outputs from your PC | Cloud multistream relay |
|---|---|---|
| Setup complexity | Higher: configure and monitor each destination and provide the necessary local output capacity. | Lower: OBS sends one feed; the relay distributes it. |
| Upload bandwidth | Can require capacity for multiple outgoing feeds, depending on the implementation. | One outgoing OBS feed from your connection; the relay handles distribution. |
| Encoder and GPU load | Potentially higher because additional output encodes may run locally. | Usually one local encode, with distribution performed remotely. |
| Per-platform bitrate control | More direct control if separate outputs are configured. | One incoming feed may be shared across destinations; relay features determine any per-platform options. |
| Failure isolation | A destination-specific failure can be isolated if outputs are independent, but there are more local components to troubleshoot. | A relay outage or account problem can affect both destinations at once. |
| Cost | No relay subscription is required, although extra local hardware or bandwidth may be necessary. | Pricing and limits depend on the relay service. |
| Privacy and keys | Keys are entered into your local output configuration. | You must also trust the relay with the permissions or keys needed to forward the stream. |
Build a World of Warcraft scene in OBS
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Let OBS estimate settings for streaming, then review the result rather than accepting an aggressive preset blindly. The wizard’s estimate is a starting point; your real upload stability and in-game performance decide the final settings.
- Create a scene. In the Scenes dock, select +, name it something recognizable such as WoW gameplay, and keep it as the scene you will test first.
- Add Game Capture. In Sources, select + → Game Capture. Choose the running World of Warcraft window or the appropriate capture mode, then verify that the preview shows the game. Select the correct window again after a client restart if the title has changed.
- Add the microphone. Add an audio input capture source for the microphone you will actually use. Speak at your normal volume and watch the mixer meter. Peaks should remain below the clipping point; a constantly red meter is not a sign of a strong signal.
- Add game or desktop audio. Add an audio output capture source, or configure OBS desktop audio, so that WoW sound reaches the stream. Balance it against the microphone rather than allowing either source to dominate.
- Add optional sources sparingly. A webcam, alerts, chat and browser sources can be added with Sources → +. Browser sources consume resources and can create encoding or rendering pressure, so remove unused ones.
- Protect private information. Check the visible game interface, notifications, friend lists and desktop areas. Use Game Capture instead of Display Capture when possible so an unrelated message or application does not appear on stream.
- Make a clean scene transition. Keep a simple backup scene containing only game capture and essential audio. If an overlay or browser source fails, switch to that scene instead of ending the broadcast.
Connect Twitch and YouTube
Account connection
Open Settings → Stream, select the service, and use the account-connection option when it is offered. Complete the browser authorization and return to OBS. Confirm that the selected account and channel are the intended ones before testing.
Stream-key connection
If you use a key, select the relevant service in Settings → Stream, copy the key from that platform’s live dashboard, and paste it into OBS. Do not send the key in chat or include it in screenshots. A compromised key can let someone else broadcast to your channel.

Testing both destinations
A private or unlisted test should verify the destination before a public launch. Twitch and YouTube have separate dashboards and health indicators, so check each one even when a relay is distributing the same OBS feed.
Set output, bitrate and encoder settings
Use CBR for live delivery
In Settings → Output, select CBR (constant bitrate) for Twitch and YouTube live workflows. A constant rate makes the stream easier for a platform to receive and process than a highly variable output.

Choose the hardware encoder available for your system: NVENC on supported NVIDIA GPUs, AMF on supported AMD GPUs, QSV on supported Intel hardware, or VideoToolbox on supported Apple hardware. OBS describes modern hardware encoders as providing good quality with minimal performance impact compared with CPU-based x264 encoding. If a hardware encoder produces driver errors or severe quality problems, update the GPU driver and retest before falling back to x264.
For Twitch, NVIDIA’s 2025 guidance recommends NVENC H.264. YouTube workflows may support AV1 or HEVC when the account, ingest path and hardware support them, but H.264 remains the broadest compatibility choice when you are unsure.
Set a platform-compatible keyframe interval
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds where the platform specifies that value. NVIDIA’s streaming guidance pairs CBR with a two-second interval. A keyframe setting that does not match a platform’s requirements can prevent a stream from starting or reduce compatibility.

Choose a sustainable bitrate
OBS recommends beginning at about 75% of total upload speed, then lowering the value if dropped frames appear. Use the stable speed you observe during play, not a best-case result from an idle connection. For example, a measured 8 Mbps of stable upload capacity gives a conservative starting budget of about 6 Mbps before accounting for other traffic. The final setting must also remain within the destination’s limit.
NVIDIA’s 2025 Twitch settings discussion cites 6000 Kbps as Twitch’s current maximum. Treat that as a Twitch-specific ceiling from that guidance, not a universal setting for every resolution, frame rate or service. YouTube publishes its own resolution-and-frame-rate bitrate tables; select the table entry for your chosen output and recheck the current guidance when those limits change.
| Output item | Recommended starting choice | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Rate control | CBR | Recommended for Twitch and YouTube live workflows. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Use where the destination specifies it; confirm the current platform requirement. |
| Encoder | Supported hardware encoder | NVENC, AMF, QSV or VideoToolbox when available; update drivers if the encoder misbehaves. |
| Codec for Twitch | H.264 | NVIDIA’s guide recommends NVENC H.264 for Twitch. |
| Codec for YouTube | H.264, or AV1/HEVC when supported | AV1 and HEVC depend on hardware and YouTube workflow support. |
| Bitrate | About 75% of stable upload capacity to start | Lower it when dropped frames occur and stay within the destination’s current limit. |
Configure audio
YouTube’s official guidance supports AAC or MP3 audio. AAC is the usual compatibility choice for a live OBS workflow. Keep the microphone clean and below clipping, then listen to a private recording or test stream to make sure game audio does not mask speech.
Choose Twitch, YouTube or both
The platforms overlap, but their delivery behavior is not identical. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats. Twitch transcoding access is tiered and capacity-dependent, so viewers may not always receive the same range of quality options. Platform limits and feature availability change; verify the current settings page in each dashboard before an important broadcast.
| Area | Twitch | YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| Codec and bitrate reference | NVIDIA’s 2025 guidance cites a 6000 Kbps maximum in its Twitch discussion and recommends NVENC H.264. | Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected resolution and frame rate; AV1 or HEVC may be available in supported workflows. |
| Transcoding | Access is tiered and depends on available capacity. | Live streams are automatically transcoded into multiple output formats. |
| Chat and community tools | Use the Twitch dashboard and chat for the Twitch audience. | Use the YouTube Live dashboard and chat for the YouTube audience. |
| Archive behavior | VOD and retention behavior follows Twitch’s current account and platform rules. | Live-stream archive behavior follows YouTube’s current channel and live-stream settings. |
| Audience discovery | Discovery depends on Twitch categories, tags and current platform behavior. | Discovery depends on YouTube search, recommendations and channel activity. |
Do not assume that a successful Twitch test proves YouTube is configured correctly, or vice versa. Each destination can reject a key, report a different ingest condition or present a different viewer-quality experience.

Run a private preflight before going live
Start an unlisted or private test and check the complete chain from game capture to viewer playback. Use this checklist:
- The WoW window selected in Game Capture is the one currently running.
- The preview shows the intended scene, with no desktop, private notification or unrelated application visible.
- The microphone meter moves when you speak and does not clip during your loudest normal words.
- Game or desktop audio is present and balanced against speech.
- The webcam, alerts and browser sources appear only if you intend to use them.
- The correct Twitch and/or YouTube account is connected.
- The stream key is stored privately and is not visible in the OBS window capture.
- The test viewer can hear both audio sources and sees video without obvious delay or corruption.
- The destination dashboard reports a healthy connection before you announce the stream.
After the test, stop the broadcast, review a short recording or replay, and correct one issue at a time. This is faster than trying to diagnose capture, audio and network problems during a public launch.
Fix dropped frames and overloads
Dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator
OBS says a rising dropped-frame counter or a yellow/red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. This is primarily a network or bitrate problem, not a WoW graphics setting.
- Change to another ingest server in the destination or relay configuration.
- If the counter continues to rise, lower the video bitrate.
- Repeat the test on the other destination. If Twitch is healthy but YouTube is not, or the reverse, the issue may be destination-specific rather than local.
- Stop other uploads, cloud backups and downloads, and retest on the connection you will use for the broadcast.
- If no server or bitrate change helps, move one destination to a relay so your connection sends one feed instead of multiple local outputs.
Do not respond to dropped frames by immediately changing unrelated WoW settings. First make the ingest server and bitrate sustainable.

Encoding overload or a laggy game
If OBS reports encoding overload, frame rendering trouble or a large performance hit while WoW is running:
Best Value
- Switch from x264 to a supported hardware encoder.
- Update the GPU driver and select the encoder recommended for the installed hardware.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate.
- Simplify scenes and remove unnecessary browser sources, animated elements and filters.
- Close competing CPU- or GPU-intensive applications.
- Use a relay if a second local output is consuming the remaining encoder or upload capacity.
Hardware encoding usually lowers CPU load, but it still consumes GPU resources. Watch both the game and OBS statistics while moving through a busy in-game area, not only while standing still.
The game image is missing or wrong
Return to the Game Capture source properties and select the currently running WoW window. Confirm that the intended scene is active and that the preview changes when the game changes. If a notification or another application appears, remove Display Capture from that scene or switch to the minimal backup scene.
Audio is clipped, silent or out of balance
- Check that the microphone source points to the correct physical device and that its mixer meter moves.
- Check that desktop or game audio is not muted and that WoW is using the expected output device.
- Lower the microphone or game level if either source clips or masks the other.
- Listen to the private test on a second device; monitoring only through the gaming headset can hide what viewers hear.
Protect accounts and viewer privacy
Keep Twitch and YouTube authorization details out of scenes, screenshots and recordings. Do not show the stream-key field while demonstrating settings. Hide desktop notifications, private messages, email previews and friend-list details before using Display Capture. A dedicated gameplay scene is safer than capturing the whole desktop, and a private test exposes accidental leaks before the public stream.
A reliable launch sequence
- Start WoW and reach the character or activity you intend to show.
- Open OBS and confirm the WoW Game Capture source, microphone meter and desktop-audio meter.
- Check Settings → Output for CBR, the intended hardware encoder, the keyframe interval and a bitrate that fits both your stable upload speed and the destination limit.
- Check Settings → Stream for the correct account or key.
- Run a short private or unlisted test and inspect both platform dashboards when multistreaming.
- Switch to the public stream only after video, audio and connection health are confirmed.
- Keep the minimal backup scene available throughout the broadcast.
The practical baseline is straightforward: capture WoW directly in OBS, use hardware H.264 encoding when supported, select CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where required, begin near 75% of stable upload capacity, and lower the bitrate or change ingest server at the first sign of dropped frames. A cloud relay is the simplest route when one OBS feed must reach both Twitch and YouTube without adding another local output.
