1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo stream a video stored in Google Drive to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, first download the authorized video to your VPS, then have FFmpeg send it to the RTMPS ingestion address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A Drive share link is not a dependable substitute for an authenticated download, and the VPS must stay online while FFmpeg streams.
How the workflow fits together
The path is Google Drive to VPS storage to FFmpeg to YouTube Live. Drive supplies the source file; FFmpeg reads that local file and sends a paced live output to YouTube. You do not need Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API for this setup: that is a separate service that processes live inputs into HLS or DASH output.
This guide assumes you have permission to download the source, a VPS with enough disk space and network capacity, FFmpeg installed, and a YouTube channel able to create a live stream. Exact VPS CPU, memory, and bandwidth needs depend on the file and whether FFmpeg copies or re-encodes it.
1. Confirm Drive access and download the video
Check the file and permission
Make sure the item is a video file, not a Google Workspace document that needs to be exported. You need an account and authorization that can read the file’s contents. For a raw Drive file (a blob), Google’s documented download route uses the Drive API files.get method with alt=media. The account must have an appropriate content-read scope, and the file’s capabilities.canDownload value should permit downloading. Owners or shared-drive organizers may restrict downloads. See Google’s download and export guide.

Do not assume that a URL copied from Drive’s sharing dialog is a direct media URL that FFmpeg can read. The documented authenticated API route is more reliable than treating a public-looking share URL as a universal input method.
Download onto the VPS
Use the authorized Drive API download flow to save the file to a directory with enough free space. Google’s guide includes a curl pattern; follow its authentication and scope requirements rather than placing a long-lived access token in a command that may be recorded in shell history or process logs. Keep credentials private.
After the download finishes, confirm the file exists, has a plausible nonzero size, and can be opened by FFmpeg. For example, run ffprobe /path/to/video.mp4 and inspect the reported streams, duration, codecs, resolution, and frame rate. If the file is incomplete, re-download it before attempting a live stream.

2. Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream and copy its current ingestion details: the RTMPS server address and stream key. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes the ingestion address and stream URL/name handling; use the details associated with your stream rather than guessing an endpoint. See YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams.
- Keep the key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or paste it into shared logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings.
- In Live Control Room, set the stream’s title, visibility, audience designation, and other required YouTube details. Start the stream setup there before sending the encoder feed, then follow the status shown in the control room.
YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP video streaming protocol.” Use the RTMPS server address supplied for your stream. Depending on the FFmpeg configuration, the server address and stream key may be entered separately or combined in the output URL in the format the destination requires.
3. Choose whether to copy or re-encode
Stream-copy when the source is already suitable
Stream-copy avoids decoding and re-encoding the audio and video, which can reduce CPU use and preserve the source’s encoded quality. It is appropriate only when the source’s container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and other stream characteristics are compatible with YouTube’s ingestion requirements. Copying does not fix an incompatible codec or an unsuitable source profile.
Transcode when compatibility or output settings require it
Re-encoding lets FFmpeg produce a chosen codec, frame rate, resolution, and bitrate, but requires more VPS CPU capacity and can change quality. Use a supported YouTube output profile and choose settings based on the source and what the VPS can encode and upload continuously. Do not select a higher resolution or frame rate than the source can meaningfully provide.

YouTube’s encoder-settings page gives recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 it recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations, not universal minimums; consult the page’s table for the precise profile you intend to use. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval not exceeding four seconds. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
4. Send the file with FFmpeg
The following is an example command pattern, not a tested universal command. Replace the input path, server URL, and key with your own values. The output URL convention can depend on how your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s supplied ingestion details are configured. Avoid putting a real stream key into a script or command history that other users can read.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Example: encode to H.264 and AAC
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This illustrates common FFmpeg options, not a recommended bitrate for every resolution or frame rate. In particular, the example’s -g 60 corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval only when the output is 30 frames per second. Set the GOP/keyframe interval to match the chosen frame rate and YouTube’s two-second recommendation; do not exceed four seconds. Select bitrate from YouTube’s settings table for the output profile, and ensure the VPS can sustain it with network headroom. If you use a different frame rate, adjust the keyframe interval accordingly.
FFmpeg options, codecs, and available encoders vary by build. Confirm that the installed build includes the encoder you select, and check its output for errors. In the examples, credentials are represented by placeholders: do not replace them in a publicly shared command or paste a real key into a ticket or screenshot.
5. Test and monitor the live output
- Use a representative portion of the video, including movement and audio, for a preflight test. Check that the VPS can keep up if you are transcoding and that its upload connection sustains the selected output bitrate.
- Start the encoder and watch YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, stream health, audio, and warnings. YouTube recommends testing before the live event and monitoring stream health.
- Check the viewer-facing result, including sound and picture, before relying on the stream. A process that has started on the VPS does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- For a continuous loop, arrange a deliberate repeat strategy and test how it behaves at the end of the file. A single FFmpeg invocation normally reaches end-of-file and exits; it is not, by itself, a permanent restart or recovery supervisor.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Drive download returns an authorization or permission error | The API request is unauthenticated, lacks a content-read scope, or the account cannot download the file. | Use credentials authorized for that file, verify the required scope, and check whether the owner or shared-drive organizer permits downloads. |
| A Drive link fails as FFmpeg input | A sharing URL is not necessarily a raw media URL and may require authentication or a browser session. | Download the authorized blob through the Drive API to VPS storage first, then point FFmpeg at the local file. |
| FFmpeg cannot read the downloaded file | The download may be incomplete, the path may be wrong, or the item may not be a raw video file. | Check file size and path, repeat the download if needed, and inspect the streams with ffprobe. |
| YouTube shows no incoming stream or rejects the connection | The RTMPS address or key may be wrong, the stream may not be set up, or the output URL format may not match the supplied details. | Copy the current ingestion information from Live Control Room, check how the key must be supplied, and keep the key private. |
| Video or audio is rejected or missing | The copied source codecs or container may not be compatible, or the selected encoder output may be misconfigured. | Inspect the source with ffprobe; if necessary, transcode to a supported output profile and verify both video and audio in a test. |
| Stream health reports unstable delivery or dropped frames | The VPS upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or encoding may exceed available CPU capacity. | Check YouTube’s health messages and VPS resource/network use. Reduce the output demand or use stream-copy if the source is compatible. |
| The stream stops at the end of the video | The input reached end-of-file and FFmpeg exited. | Plan and test a loop or restart mechanism appropriate to your workflow; monitor the result rather than assuming one process will recover itself. |
Costs and operational trade-offs
This method uses VPS storage for the downloaded source and VPS resources while streaming. Stream-copy generally avoids the encoding workload, while transcoding requires CPU capacity; either way, the VPS network must sustain the live output. The official YouTube settings provide bitrate recommendations, but they do not specify a VPS size or plan for this workflow, so choose infrastructure based on the source profile and actual sustained resource needs.
