How to Stream Vertical Videos in a Continuous YouTube Live Playlist from a VPS

You can send a vertical video feed from a VPS to YouTube Live through a third-party encoder using YouTube’s RTMP(S) ingest workflow. The difficult part is not opening the connection: it is reliably sequencing prerecorded files and keeping the encoder running. YouTube’s published setup explains how to create the stream and connect an encoder, but it does not provide a certified recipe for a continuous VPS playlist. Treat playlist playback, recovery and gap-free transitions as implementation work to build and test—not as a guaranteed YouTube feature.

What the VPS setup can—and cannot—do

A VPS can host an encoder process that sends a live feed to YouTube while your personal computer is off. YouTube supports vertical live viewing, and some vertical live streams can be discovered while browsing Shorts in the YouTube app. The VPS does not make prerecorded files live by itself: software on the VPS must read the files, produce a video-and-audio feed, and send that feed to YouTube.

Keep two distinct systems in mind:

  • YouTube ingest: YouTube Live Control Room provides the server URL and stream key used by an encoder. YouTube documents RTMP(S) for third-party encoders and supports a separate vertical output key in its dual-output workflow.
  • Playlist playback and process operation: Your encoder setup must determine which file plays next, how audio and video behave at file boundaries, and what happens if the encoder or VPS stops. The official YouTube setup does not certify a particular continuous prerecorded-file playlist method, VPS size, or unattended uptime.

So the honest answer is: the platform-supported ingest path is documented; a continuous, uninterrupted rotation of your own files from a VPS must be implemented and validated on your chosen software and host.

Choose how YouTube gets the vertical picture

Approach How the vertical output is made What to plan for
Live Control Room dual-stream handling YouTube says streams started from Live Control Room go live in horizontal and vertical formats by default. The vertical view is a center crop unless you select another layout. Check that a center crop keeps the important action in frame. Configure the format before starting; vertical cannot be added after the stream has begun.
Third-party encoder dual output Select RTMP(S) in the relevant Live Control Room controls and use the separate second stream key for vertical output. Send the intended content to the corresponding key. Plan for the encoder to produce and send the outputs you intend. This adds configuration and process-management work; it is not evidence that VPS streaming is inherently more reliable or cheaper.

The best choice depends on the composition you want and what your encoder can produce. If a center crop cuts off text, faces or other important details, prepare a portrait composition or select a suitable layout rather than assuming the horizontal image will translate well.

Prepare the videos and VPS before configuring YouTube

Check the source files

  • Confirm that every video is genuinely suitable for portrait viewing: check its dimensions, aspect ratio, framing and any text that could be cropped.
  • Listen through the beginning and end of each file. A playlist can have an audio gap, abrupt change in loudness or cut-off even if the encoder remains connected.
  • Decide the intended playback order and whether files should repeat. You need an encoder or playback workflow that can implement that order; YouTube’s RTMP(S) connection does not define it.
  • Make sure the files are accessible to the encoder process on the VPS, and account for their storage and transfer needs with your host.

Choose and verify the encoder workflow

FFmpeg is a general media converter with command and filter documentation, but the available official material does not establish a particular command for rotating your files into a stable continuous YouTube broadcast. Do not treat YouTube’s HLS ingest playlist as a source-video playlist: HLS ingest describes an encoder sending media segments and a media playlist over HTTPS. It is a delivery format, not proof of a ready-made file-rotation workflow. YouTube’s documented third-party dual vertical/horizontal setup uses RTMP(S).

Before leaving a broadcast unattended, verify your actual encoder configuration with the exact files and VPS you plan to use. Test portrait dimensions and crop, audio continuity at file boundaries, transitions, reconnection after a dropped connection, and behavior after an encoder or VPS restart. Observe CPU use and outbound bandwidth during sustained playback; no official VPS resource requirement or provider-specific cost is established here.

Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder

  1. Set up or schedule a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the vertical/horizontal arrangement you need before starting. For third-party dual output, select RTMP(S) and identify the vertical stream key. You cannot add the vertical format once the stream is already running.
  2. Copy the ingest details into the encoder. YouTube’s encoder instructions call for the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Use the corresponding key for the output you are configuring. Treat keys like passwords: do not expose them in screenshots, public configuration files, shared scripts or logs.
  3. Use RTMPS details as provided by YouTube. YouTube’s RTMPS technical guidance specifies a secure connection using port 443 and the correct server hostname for SNI authentication. Preserve the supplied hostname and endpoint rather than substituting an unverified address. Keep credentials out of examples and logs.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented flow includes waiting for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and then clicking Go live. Confirm that the picture is portrait as intended and that sound is present before starting the public broadcast.
  5. Test the playlist and recovery behavior. Let the intended sequence run long enough to observe file changes and audio transitions. If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it works. Separately test what the encoder does after YouTube disconnects it and what happens when the VPS or process restarts.

Use placeholders such as <YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL> and <STREAM_KEY> in notes or templates; never paste a real stream key into a public example. A valid ingest connection alone does not demonstrate that the playlist will advance or recover.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing the encoder ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing backup-encoder failover when applicable, verifying archive files are growing, checking that viewers can access the event from channel or watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. Apply those checks alongside VPS-specific testing; none guarantees that an unattended stream will stay live indefinitely.

  • Sound: Listen at the start, through a file transition and after the playlist advances. Check for silence, clipping or unexpected changes.
  • Sequence: Observe multiple file changes and, if the playlist is meant to repeat, a full cycle. Check for gaps, stalls or an unintended stop.
  • Access: Open the event from the channel or watch page and check it on a phone. Viewer surfaces differ: YouTube’s vertical live experience is in the YouTube app, is not currently available on tablets, and scheduled streams and Premieres do not appear in the vertical feed.
  • Recovery: Test any backup encoder and the restart behavior of your own VPS process. Do not infer recovery behavior from the fact that the stream initially connected.
  • Ongoing operation: Check that any local archive you rely on is growing, and monitor video and audio quality. Confirm what alerts or supervision your chosen host and process setup actually provide.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate What to check
The encoder connects, but the picture is not portrait or the subject is cut off. Output selection, layout or crop. Verify that vertical was configured before the stream started, that the vertical output is going to its intended key, and that the selected layout suits the source framing.
The scheduled broadcast does not appear live to viewers. Preview and Live Control Room launch flow. Wait for the preview, then use YouTube’s documented Go live step for the scheduled stream. Check access from the channel or watch page.
The stream stops when one source file ends. Playlist sequencing, not necessarily YouTube ingest. Check whether the playback workflow is configured to advance to another file and what it does at end of list. YouTube’s ingest documentation does not define this behavior for your encoder.
There is a pause, audio jump or abrupt cut between videos. Source compatibility and file-boundary handling. Test the actual sequence and inspect audio and video at each transition. The continuous-feed behavior depends on the chosen playback and encoding configuration.
The feed does not reconnect after a drop or restart. Encoder or VPS recovery configuration. Test reconnection and process restart on the chosen setup; test backup-encoder failover if you use one. Do not assume YouTube’s stream key handles VPS process supervision.
RTMPS does not establish a secure connection. Endpoint, port or hostname/SNI configuration. Use YouTube’s provided secure endpoint information, port 443 and the correct hostname for SNI. Do not replace it with an unverified address.

Cost and reliability limits of the VPS approach

A VPS approach combines hosted compute, network transfer and encoder software. The actual cost depends on the provider, workload and applicable traffic terms; no VPS price, minimum CPU/RAM, bandwidth target or uptime guarantee is established here. Likewise, a running VPS is not by itself proof of gapless playback or continuous availability. Measure the workload and test the complete file-to-YouTube path on the service you choose.
