It accepts live audio over a WebSocket connection and returns transcript updates as events. The key to a correct live display is treating delta text as finalized text to append, while treating intermediate text as a provisional suffix to replace.
Release caveat: Microsoft Learn labels the capability public preview, says it has no SLA, and does not recommend it for production workloads. Check the current Realtime API guide and model overview before building around it.

What you need before streaming
For the Realtime API, Microsoft documents these prerequisites: an Azure subscription, a Microsoft Foundry resource in a supported region, and a deployed MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming model. The Realtime API guide is the reference for the endpoint, messages and event sequence: Use MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming with the Realtime API.
You also need a live audio source and a client that can open a WebSocket. A microphone is one option; an existing audio stream or recording can be used instead. Microsoft’s documentation does not require a particular microphone model.
#1 Best Overall
- Omnidirectional Microphone - It is not a Speaker or Speakerphone, it is a condenser microphone. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern with a pickup distance of 11.5 ft, making it easy to capture the most subtle sounds from 360° directions and transmit the sound more loud and clear. Participants can hear each other without raising their voices.
- Made for Conferences - This microphone is perfect for small or medium meetings over an internet network by using Skype/GoToMeeting/WebEx/Hangouts/Fuze/VoIP/Zoom and other softwares. You can also use it for court reports, seminars, remote training, business negotiations, video chats, etc.
- Plug & Play, No Drivers Required - The microphone is compatible with all operating systems - both Windows and macOS. You just need to plug the microphone to start recording. If there is no response after inserting the mic, please go to the microphone setting of your computer and select the mic as the INPUT device.
- Convenient Mute Button - Quickly mute/unmute your microphone. The built-in blue indicator light for checking whether the USB microphone is working.
- Well Designed Cable - The microphone is constructed of sturdy and metal material and the base is fitted with an anti-slip mat which keeps it stable on desktop during use. It is small, convenient and does not require much space when in use. Connected with a 1.8m nylon shielded wire, it effectively eliminates signal interferences to achieve the best recording results.
How to stream speech transcription with the Realtime API
- Connect to the endpoint. Open a WebSocket to
wss://{your_resource_name}.services.ai.azure.com/mai/v1/realtime. The Microsoft guide showsintent=transcriptionin the request URI. Authenticate with a Microsoft Entra bearer token or an API key; the guide documents an API key in the connection header or as a query-string key. - Configure the session before sending audio. Send a
session.updatemessage for a transcription session, specifying the deployed model name,MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming. Set the input audio format to raw mono signed little-endian PCM16 at either 16,000 or 24,000 samples per second. This is PCM audio data, not a WAV file: do not include a WAV header. - Choose language behavior. Set the language field to
nullto allow automatic language detection, or provide a language code as a hint. Microsoft says unrecognized values are treated as unset. In this interface,turn_detectionandnoise_reductionsupport onlynull. Session settings cannot be changed after the first audio append, so configure them before streaming. - Append audio as it arrives. Send nonempty base64-encoded PCM16 bytes in
input_audio_buffer.appendmessages. Microsoft recommends small chunks—for example, 10–20 ms—to reduce latency. Larger chunks lower network overhead but can increase the delay before transcript updates. Do not expect one acknowledgement or transcript event for each append: an append can produce no transcript event or several. - Commit at a pause or recording end. When the speaker reaches a natural pause or the audio source ends, send
input_audio_buffer.commit. The resultingcompletedevent contains the full final transcript since the previous commit.
How to handle partial and final transcript events
Keep finalized text separate from the live, replaceable hypothesis. In the MAI-specific event flow, delta carries newly finalized text; append it exactly as delivered. intermediate carries a provisional suffix; replace the previous provisional suffix with the latest one rather than appending it. Do not add or strip spaces from delta text, as Microsoft cautions that doing so can corrupt the transcript.
Build the displayed transcript
- Maintain an accumulated string of finalized
deltatext. - Maintain a separate string for the latest
intermediatesuffix. Replace this value whenever a new intermediate event arrives. - Render the live view as the finalized text followed by the current provisional suffix.
- When a
completedevent arrives after a commit, use its full transcript for the committed segment and clear the provisional suffix for that segment.
For example, if the finalized text is “Please send the” and the latest intermediate suffix is “updated file,” display “Please send the updated file.” If a later intermediate event revises that suffix to “updated report,” replace only the provisional portion. When more finalized delta text arrives, append it as delivered; do not treat the earlier intermediate text as finalized just because it appeared on screen.

Realtime API or Azure Speech SDK?
Microsoft documents two integration paths. The WebSocket API offers direct protocol control; the Azure Speech SDK is the managed-client option for developers who want the library to handle connection management, retries and audio streaming. Both paths support intermediate and final transcription results. See Microsoft’s overview and Azure Speech SDK guide.
| Consideration | Realtime API | Azure Speech SDK |
|---|---|---|
| Integration style | Direct WebSocket connection to the Realtime API endpoint | Managed client library for transcription streaming |
| Connection behavior | Your application owns connection behavior and protocol handling | Microsoft positions the SDK as handling connection management and retries |
| Best fit | An application with a compatible WebSocket client or a need for direct protocol control | An application that benefits from a managed client and its supported platform setup |
| Documented version or region detail | Realtime guide lists Sweden Central, Central US and South India as available; East US 2 is coming soon | SDK guide lists Azure Speech SDK v1.52.0 as a prerequisite and lists Southeast Asia in place of South India |
The SDK version and regional availability can change. Microsoft’s two integration guides list different regions, so verify the current table for your exact integration and resource type rather than assuming that a region listed for one path is supported by the other.

Session limits and language support
Microsoft’s Realtime API guide says a session can last up to one hour. The model documentation states support for 60 languages. Use automatic detection or an explicit language hint as appropriate; consult the current documentation for language details rather than assuming the same behavior for every language or configuration.

The public-preview status is a material deployment constraint: Microsoft says the feature has no SLA and is not recommended for production workloads. For experimentation or evaluation, design the client to handle connection interruptions and evolving preview behavior, and check Microsoft’s current guidance for availability in the region where your resource is deployed.
