How to Stream Recorded Church Sermons to YouTube from a Synology NAS

You can stream a prerecorded sermon stored on a Synology NAS to YouTube Live by using the NAS as network storage and running OBS on a computer that can access the recording. Add the file to OBS, connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube stream with its stream URL and key, then start the encoder and complete the go-live step in YouTube Live Control Room. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for live camera feeds, not playing a sermon file from the NAS.

What you need—and what the NAS does

The NAS holds the sermon recording. A computer running OBS reads that file and handles playback and encoding; YouTube receives the live video stream from OBS. This is a practical setup using a network share, not a Synology-validated end-to-end recipe, so first confirm that the OBS computer can open and play the file from your NAS.

  • A completed sermon recording stored on the Synology NAS.
  • A computer with OBS installed, connected to the NAS share and the internet.
  • A YouTube account able to create a live stream, plus the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
  • Enough upload capacity for the stream and a test before the scheduled service.

The exact NAS model, DSM version, recording format, computer, and internet connection are unspecified here. Compatibility and uninterrupted playback therefore need to be checked with your own equipment and YouTube account.

Set up OBS for one sermon or a playlist

Stream one recording

  1. On the computer that will run OBS, open the sermon file from the NAS share and confirm it plays. If the computer cannot access the share, resolve that file-access issue before configuring the stream.
  2. In OBS, create or select a scene. Under Sources, add a Media Source and select the sermon recording. Adjust the source to fit the canvas; check that the video is not unintentionally cropped or stretched.
  3. Choose whether to enable Loop. With looping enabled, OBS repeats the media file after it finishes. Leave it off if the stream should play the sermon once and then end or hold on a final scene.
  4. Check the scene’s audio meters while the sermon plays. Confirm the expected audio source is active and that the recording is audible in the OBS preview.

OBS documents using a local video file as a Media Source and provides a loop option. Reading a file over a Synology network share is a practical use of that source, rather than a Synology-specific OBS integration.

Play several recordings in sequence

  1. Install VLC on the same computer as OBS.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and create a playlist containing the sermon files accessible from the NAS share.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart after the last item.
  4. Test the transition between files, including audio and aspect ratio, before using the playlist in a scheduled stream.

OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. If VLC is missing or the architectures do not match, the source may not work as expected.

Create and connect the YouTube Live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule or set up the live event for the intended date and time. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a stream URL and stream key for connecting software such as OBS.
  2. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube if available, or use the custom server option and enter the stream URL and stream key supplied for the event. Labels can vary with OBS versions and account setup; use the values shown for your YouTube stream.
  3. Keep the stream key private. It authorizes an encoder to send video to that stream. Do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot.
  4. Start streaming in OBS at the planned time. For a scheduled event, also follow the go-live step shown in YouTube Live Control Room; starting the encoder and making the scheduled event live are separate parts of the workflow.
  5. Before announcing the setup as ready, run a private or unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview, picture framing, sermon audio, playback start and end behavior, and playlist transitions if applicable.
  6. When the service is over, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Understand the Surveillance Station limitation

Synology documents Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature for sending live camera streams to YouTube. Its setup uses a selected camera and stream profile, then a YouTube RTMP path and key; Synology states that the feature supports H.264. That documentation does not describe selecting and broadcasting a previously recorded sermon file from the NAS.

  • Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list

  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.

Synology describes Surveillance Station as video-management software for Synology NAS and NVR systems, but that general description does not establish that a particular NAS model or package can encode and broadcast stored sermon files without a separate computer or compatible software. For the documented workflow here, keep the sermon on the NAS and use OBS on a computer as the playback and encoding station.

Choose the workflow that fits the service

Need Suitable approach What to check
One sermon played once OBS Media Source with Loop disabled Confirm OBS starts the file at the intended point and the stream ends as planned.
One sermon repeated OBS Media Source with Loop enabled Test the restart behavior and whether a repeated sermon is appropriate for the event.
Several recordings in sequence OBS VLC Video playlist with Loop Playlist as needed Install architecture-matched VLC and test every transition.
Unattended 24/7 prerecorded programming StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it plays uploaded video continuously on YouTube, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Confirm the service fits your channel and programming needs; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

YouTube’s encoder and scheduling instructions and OBS’s media-source documentation describe the basic workflow, but they do not compare reliability, price, or suitability for a specific church. For a scheduled service, decide who will monitor OBS and Live Control Room. For continuous programming, consider whether an attended computer setup or a cloud service better fits your operating needs.

  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.

Troubleshoot before the service

OBS cannot find or play the NAS file

Check that the OBS computer can open the file from the share using its own login and network connection. If the file is unavailable or playback pauses, resolve share access or file-read issues before the event; OBS cannot encode a file it cannot read reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The VLC playlist source is missing or fails

Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Reopen OBS after installation if needed, then test the source and playlist.

The YouTube preview does not appear

Confirm OBS is streaming to the correct event using that event’s stream URL and key. Check that the encoder is started, then follow any scheduled-event go-live action in Live Control Room. Avoid sharing or reusing a key without verifying that it belongs to the intended stream.

Picture, sound, or playback is wrong

Use a private or unlisted test to check framing, audio, file start and end behavior, and playlist transitions. Adjust the OBS scene or source configuration and repeat the test. The correct settings depend on the recording and target event; the cited official guidance does not establish universal resolution, bitrate, or keyframe values for every setup.

The stream stops when the sermon finishes

If you intended to repeat one recording, enable Loop in its Media Source. For a set of recordings, enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source. If the stream is meant to end after one play, a stop at file completion is expected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copyright and church-channel checks

Before streaming, confirm that the church has the rights or permissions needed for every element in the recording, including music, lyrics, images, and other third-party material. A sermon recording being stored on the church’s NAS does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Review the applicable YouTube rules and any licenses covering the service, and test with the account that will host the event. This workflow explains the technical setup; it cannot determine whether a particular recording is cleared for use.
